the_saxophone_player Blue Roses 3 Who Plays Tenor Sax..ive heard many people say they play alto or bari but i want to know who plays tenor cuz im having problems with my low notes..and it veries from sax to sax..i mean i drop my jaw and everything its just that theres times that i can get to middle C and times that i cant..as of right now middle c is the lowest note i know..but my problem is that my band director has heard me get to middle c b4 and he'll ask me to play that scale and i cant get as low as i need to..does anyone have any advice?? it depends on how much of the mouth piece you have in your mouth, i found that the lower you have to get the more mouthpiece you need in your mouth(that sounds really wrong)what size reed do you play on? -tenor sax playa- lol..its ok i know what you mean..i play on size 3 reeds.i just switched from 2 1/2 to 3..that makes sense now cuz my niece can hit the low notes just fine and she puts the whole thing in her mouth (i know it sounds wrong) and shes only 3..the only thing im confused about is my BD always tells me i have too much of it in my mouth when im trying to hit the low notes.

Then maybe you aren't using enough air, I play alto but my private instructor plays alto and tenor and he usualy has his tenor out. Actually what he told me is that it dosen't matter which sax you are playing the tech. to getting low notes out are about the air. He told me that you have to use a lot, and I mean a lot of air and you have to tighten up at your diaphraigm ( almost till you look like a cherry, because you're using so much air that your face turns red )

I'm up to 3 1/2 now on both my instruments ( clarinet and alto ) Just a warning, you are going to feel like someone kicked you in the mouth a couple of times, but it goes away the more you practice.

I play the alto sax. I moonlighted on a tenor sax for a quartet playing Portrait of Scott Joplin (or was it Scott Joplin Portrait). Anywho, we ended up not being able to perform it, but I loved getting to play on the tenor. I'm hoping when I try out for jazz band maybe they'll go "Shannon, we need a tenor player" but I doubt it. Not to mention the whole not owning my own tenor mouth piece messes with that. :/

I play tenor and love it, the only other saxaphone i have played though is a bari but ran into an issue with the lack of music. I would like to try alto or saprano some day soon though.

Here's something I just learned last night at my private lessons, I've been having problems with getting the lower octave out when playing above high G, so we couldn't figure out what was going on cause I had my jaw low and my corners tight. Riggs told me last night that my tounge was too low in my mouth. You might have a to adjust the hight of the back of your tounge until you get the full, dark sound that you're looking for. Just experiment around with it until you've figured out of it's too high or too low.

To the person with the Tenor sax problem:
The great thing about the tenor sax is it's range in the lower section. If you just switched to a thicker reed then i suggest you strengthen your emboucher a bit with longtones. It's kind of like working out your arms and lifting weights. My old sax teacher always told me to keep the same emboucher no matter what note your playing. Just blow through a single note over and over again. Try to ease into the lower notes and the more you work on them the more your emboucher will get stronger giving you more control over subtones. Subtones are great because you can play a low C without honking or blowing real hard. It's a boring process but the more you do it the more control you have over your tone and your notes on the lower and higher end. Once you gain that control it leads into overtones which are a big part of playing your altissimos.
