1 consequence of Garnett's megadeal: It hastened breakup of promisin' KG-Stephon Marbury pairin'. Marbury was supposed to be longtime complement to Garnett in Minnesota after bein' acquired in a draft-night trade in 1996, n' 2 delivered immediately by leadin' Timberwolves to their 1st playoff berth in '97. Good vibes didn't last long. In March 1999, Marbury, reportedly uncomfortable playin' for much less money than Garnett, was traded to New Jersey in a 3-team deal that brought Terrell Brandon to Minnesota.

Another consequence of Garnett's megadeal: It hastened changes to league rules. NBA emerged from lockout that delayed start of 1998-99 season with a new collective bargainin' agreement that called for maximum salaries n' a wage scale for rookies. (Garnett, however, did just fine in his 1st post-lockout deal: 5 years, $100 million.)

Garnett had his ups n' downs with another sidekick, swingman Wally Szczerbiak. Garnett once took a swing at his teammate after a practice in 2000, but 2 also combined forces in leadin' Wolves to 4 50-win seasons from 1999-2004. Szczerbiak was traded to Celtics in January 2006, then shipped to Seattle as part of Ray Allen trade in June 2007.

For all his individual brilliance, Garnett endured repeated playoff disappointments in Twin Cities. Wolves lost in 1st round a record 7 consecutive seasons beginnin' in 1996-97. They finally broke through in 2004 when a team featurin' Garnett n' 1st-year Wolves Sam Cassell n' Latrell Sprewell reached Western Conference finals before losin' to Lakers. Minnesota failed to make playoffs in 3 seasons since that postseason run.

Garnett added more hardware to his collection when he was selected as 2004 NBA MVP, finishin' 3 1st-place votes short of being a unanimous winner. That year Garnett became 5th player to lead league in both total points n' rebounds.
