Not that it's extremely important or anything...
But um... I applied to the guild a while ago (a month?)
With 50+pictures in a public photobucket gallery... and I haven't gotten any replies yet.
Did I do something wrong? lol
Sorry, I've been really busy the past 6 weeks getting used to my new mod-dom. @_@ There's no join request in the queue for you though...try again? There's only 1 request listed, and it's not yours. whee ;;

Blah can some of you guys give me some advice? You're all so wonderful like that User Image

I wanna do something pretty different and do an auction for a tiny chibi sculpture... I started making a couple this week after being inspired by a tutorial. They look something like these (I'm picking up the photos of the ones I made tomorrow after class XD). I just got curious how well one would go over on gaia and how much interest there would be.

I'm thinking that up to a certain amount, I would just make and take pretty graphic photos of it and such... but that if it reaches a certain amount, I'd be willing to send the actual sculpture to the winner (it can be made into an ornament, keychain, necklace, or just sit on a shelf). I'm at a loss as to what amount I should list for this-- or should I just offer to send it no matter the winning bid? I'd like some incentive to bid higher.

I've always been bad at not putting autobuys. Do autobuys attract people at all? If it's recommended, any advice on what I might list it as?

I'm so bad at making these decisions xd

*nod* I know what you mean-

Plus, I'm super afraid that I'll put all my capital into it- about 10 mil worth of gold+items, at this point- into it... and then not get a very good turnout, or have it be WORTH all that money. A part of me thinks I should just liquidate it all and do single commissions. ...I wonder if that'd be ..'more' worth it. Y'know?

Of course, some of these artists don't open themselves to commissions- they just enter these contests. And others want a very large amt for a commish. So maybe it would be a better deal. *shrugsigh* I just dunno. ^_~ So I keep putting it off.

i don't know of any artists i like that do contests strictly and no private commissions. from my experience, if you oferred the artist and item they wanted, they will do the commission either way and will probably do a better job than with a contest entry. the big artists don't enter contests unless they have reasonably good prizes anyway, so it would cost you about the same to commission them or to have them join your contest.

i was going to host a contest but changed my mind because there are so many entries people get in contests that if i got them, i would never use. and the 4-5 really good entries i'd get wouldn't be worth spending 2-3mil each on. i'd rather focus on stuff i want and pay fullprice for it, but that's just me :]

Yeah both views make a lot of sense. My first contest I only had 250k for a price and I felt I got a wonderful amount of entries and I ended up tie-ing first place (gave equal amount of prize).

I like contests because I can give the artists more freedom. I'm not ordering a chibi, a headshot, a couple group, something with or without background... and I hope that they enter because they like the subject matter (at least that's the main reason why I'll enter a contest... than I have nothing big to lose). A lot of artists from that contest thought of things for the characters that I thought was so neat and original.

And I also think there are a fair amount of artists out there that are quite darn good but don't have the popularity or experience to charge a ton or get an arm and a leg for and auction... so contests with a decent prize can be a step ladder.

*end of star's rambling point of view sweatdrop *

Hey, question: A while ago, one of you were advertising a "Real Man" auction that needed artists- but I couldn't remember who.

I know someone who's interested, and wanted to know if there were still artists needed.

i suppose you could say that, star. i don't do "give me a fullbody of so and so for this much", i just direct people to my request thread and let them do whatever they want. when you force people to do something specific, it usually turns out like crap, so i agree with you there.

if you get to hosting that contest, good luck to you. :]

Thanks Magaly smile And yeah, I did set up a request thread after that contest so I agree it allows the artist to be intersested in it to begin with. The thread's kinda been dying on me XD I hate turning people down too and though I do, some I find I accept I'm really not that impressed or in love with their art. I think the only REALLY good artists that stopped by the thread were Keiiii (did a gorgeous gorgeous piece for me) and heibai (who might be waiting out for an art trade one day). I guess I'm like you in the way that I would prefer quality over quantity. I mean, when you're an artist yourself, what are you really using the art for except for the joy of seeing by other artist's you like?

I'm thinking I'll raise at least two million for two seperate contests. I have enough for one contest now, but the one I was interested in doing first was for my own manga characters and I only have the first 10 pgs sketched and nothing else XD If more interest is created by the contest, I want there to be something they could read a bit of it. ^^;

I agree with you.. In the Breedable pets forum there are people actually making Steve Irwin pet auctions. I can't believe it how low someone will go to make gold.

Poor Steve ):

On an unrelated note, I have a question about "real life" commissions (I don't know if it applies to Gaian ones because I've never seen it around here before) - how do people feel about commissioning someone and paying by the hour? I've only had two experiences with it, and though it worked out (fantastic work and twelve happinesses), part of me worried that I could ultimately end up paying more than I wanted to on the pieces.

It sounds a bit terrible, because I think it's impolite to imply someone's work isn't worth something (maybe we can make that judgement call based on our experiences as commissioners, but, you know, in private), but I hate having misgivings (I'm trying to avoid using a cheesy analogy like "I don't want to pay for the Eiffel Tower").

I know the ultimate solution is to not commission anyone who accepts payment by the hour if I'm concerned about it, but I hate that solution - I like commissioning people (; Anyway, I'll cope, but I was just wondering what other people thought about that kind of payment - for? Against?

I honestly don't like paying by the hour at all (and I avoid doing so) unless they doing something like Nightmare Jester does where they give you an estimate number of hours and if it takes longer, you have the choice of paying the extra but you're not obligated to do so.

While this may sound weird, artists who charge by the hour make me feel like going into those stores where if you have to ask how much something is, you can't afford it. And since I loathe stores like that, I don't go into them. And that's kind of how I work with hourly commissions.

Edit: that's not to say I won't oggle and enjoy an artist's work even if they do charge by the hour.

At least Steve died doing something he enjoyed though? I keep thinking it would have sucked even worse if he just died in his sleep or something. Then again, I'm a horrible person so don't mind me sweatdrop

Nah - I'm with you Mek, he went doing what he loved. They said they even taped him pulling the barb out >_O;; Guy was a trooper. It's just ironic that he was killed by something nicknamed "the pussycat of the sea" T^T

Audley - I'm pretty sure there was a huge controversy over that exact subject a while back LoL

i think it's selfish of artists to charge by the hour even if that IS how they might be paid if they were professionals [though most people aren't, they use contracts and have several deadlines]. you should be able to control your skills and know what you're capable of + how long it will take you. it seems silly to say "yeah, i'll do this and calculate how long i took then bill you". even if you have a base fee you add to depending on character complexity/medium, that's a lot better than charging by the hour and leaving people guessing as to how much they're going to spend.
