Then it was Neon Genesis, Cowboy Bebop, and Ghost in the Shell

I think it depends on what you're fan of such as science-related past times or computers or even arts, specifically anime and their related merchandise. I only make this generalization off of not hearing someone call football fans 'nerds'. Maybe it's a school-related thing as sports are more extra curricular.
