Things I wanted to do in Hawaii more than anything else, but failed to accomplish:

1) Poke lava with a stick. Or at least see active lava. I hiked 6 miles to see the active lava flows, only to find a barrier. Part of the new land (about the size of a cruise ship) is expected to break off and fall into the ocean soon, and they had to rope it off. So if you wanted to see the active flows, you'd have to walk another 6 miles arround the barrier. And I'm anemic and didn't have enough water for 6 more miles...

2) Go to the top of Mona Kea to the snow caps and the astronomy observatories and make a snowball in Hawaii. In order to drive to the top, you have to have four wheel drive... and the car we rented did not.

3) Go to the green sand beach at the southernmost place in the United States. The sand is green because it's made up of olivine. The gem-quality version of olivine is Peridot, my favorite gemstone. So it would have been spiff to lay on a bed of gemstone sand. Unfortunately we couldn't go because... my mom's cousin didn't want to go.

Mweh... I can't wait to get back home. I'm comming back next year.

I think I'm gonna quest for one of thoes goth gowns everyone else is wearing...
