Marcus nodded. "And for once, they won't be able to interfere. They'll have nothing to interfere with." In honesty, he did want to tell them about the engagement, as soon as possible. In fact, he wanted to tell the entire world. But, he reasoned, they would find out soon enough. And Terryn seemed to be having fun.

"Except I sitll do not wish to be married in a church." Terryn frowned. "I do not think that I could in good faith tell the priest of a religion I do not agree with that I will be your loyal, obedient object for the rest of my life."

Marcus shrugged. He wasn't concerned about that. "Fine. We'll be married somewhere else. And it's not difficult to fill out the forms that bind you to me; I can have a clerk do that."

"Bind me to you?" Terryn quirked an eyebrow. "Excuse me, sir? I will not be your docile little house wench, my lord."

Marcus rolled his eyes. "Legally, I mean. My sympathies to the man that thinks for even a second that he can get you to be a docile lamb." He smiled. "And I further extend my sympathies to his doctor, once you've dealt with him."

"Why would you extend sympathies to the doctor? I would think the man would worship me for giving him financial security for the rest of his life." Terryn chuckled and ran her fingers through Marcus's hair.

Marcus laughed. "I take it back. But, while I don't want you to be docile, I'd rather you not put a man in a position of thinking he were to make a house wench of you." The very thought of it almost made him smile again. Lord, Terryn would probably intimidate them as soon as she'd finished curtseying.

"Of course not." Terryn ran her hand down the back of his neck, digging her fingertips in at the base of two pressure points. "The only wench that they would take me for would be one of the pirate variety."

"The earl's daughter? A pirate?" asked Marcus, shifting his shoulders. "No, never. What a waste, what a waste."

"And why?" Terryn pulled away and placed her hands on her hips. "I think I would make a fine scourge of the seven seas."

"Really? You don't feel that your calling is more in the abbeys?" asked Marcus innocently. "Helping deprived...cattle and children and raising your own vegetables?"

"What? Do you honestly mean to say that you've succumbed to carnal pleasures?" asked Marcus, as though blown away by the very notion. "Terryn, I don't know what to think of you."

"Think whatever you wish." Terryn pulled him close again, her face an inch from his. "Just remember that it is your fault I have indulged in the pleasures of the flesh."

For some reason, this pleased Marcus. "Nonsense. You were aching for it all the time," he answered, with a slight smirk. "And when you saw me, you couldn't help yourself. You just had to go and seduce me."
