There was another Vine Whip, and a whole lot more of absolutely nothing from Growlithe. Train sighed, exasperated, and pulled out her Pokédex. She scanned Growlithe to jump to his page, and scrolled down to his move list. She was surprised to see a fairly impressive amount, as she was certain the last time she had checked there were a lot less. Her mind briefly flickered to the maps on the Pokémon Center wall, and she wondered if this had anything to do with that new region opening its doors. It seemed like the Pokémon were affected in big world changes like that. Still, as exciting as this was, she still had no way of even getting to test these stupid moves out.
Really, all the Bellsprout had to work with now was its Vine Whip and Growth attacks. And Growth wasn't really an attack. Finally, though, Train saw some movement in her Pokémon and he slowly opened his eyes, yawning very slightly before jumping (figuratively, of course) when he realized that he was not touching the ground. He barked and chomped down on the Bellsprout's vines in a Bite attack. Train wondered if Pokémon attacking on their own like that, even after waking up, would be considered some sort of disobedience to their trainer. She personally didn't mind; how the heck was she supposed to get mad at her Pokémon for waking up and reacting to a situation? But she wondered if other trainers felt the same way.
As the Bellsprout's vines retracted quickly into its body, the Flower Pokémon began shaking its leaves and spreading that blue powder again. Train shouted in annoyance. "Flame Wheel that thing into ******** next week!" Growlithe felt pretty refreshed after his nap, despite losing a little HP during it. His body erupted into flames, which spun quickly around his body and the Puppy Pokémon charged right through the powder, which burned up as it hit the flames. He bowled the Bellsprout right over, which let out a short cry before promptly being knocked out. Train cheered loudly, and Growlithe barked and wagged his tail, facing his trainer. "You did great, buddy!" She cooed. Pikachu had gotten up and returned to her side just as the Growlithe let out a small bark and ran off, feeling incredibly playful now. "Wait, uh--" Growlithe quickly disappeared from sight, and Train ripped his PokéBall off of her belt as she bolted after him. God damn it, why was he being so frustrating today?!

Leon had to admit, the end of that battle was a little surprising. Though he hadn't been worried about losing, he also had not expected the Meditite to go down so soon. Tessa gave another small speech and then. just like that, she had fled into the darkness that had seeped away from them a bit. He could only hope that the other gym trainers were not as…eccentric? Determined? As she was.
Though Leon had not been uncomfortable in the darkness, it was nice that he had a wider view as now he could make out a bit more of the maze. He did not have to worry about missing any turns from now on. He had already noticed an extra path at the intersection, but opted to stay away from it. After some more walking a couple more decisions, he came upon another trainer.
"I am Hideki," The boy declared. He was a muscular asian boy, dressed in a karate uniform. He wore a black belt, but Leon was not impressed; anyone could earn a black belt. It was only the first degree. There were five of them, if he recalled correctly. "Since you've run into me, we must battle. If you don't defeat me, you won't be allowed to challenge Brawly." Leon was not thrilled to have to engage in another battle, but at least this boy seemed a lot less talkative than Tessa had been.

Disable, read the entry on the redhead’s pokedex. Prevents a pokemon’s ability to use its last used move. The boy’s frown only deepened when his gaze returned to the small battlefield, and his crimson fish flopped uselessly up and down in the air. And for once, he was completely silent. His fingers curled into a tight ball, nails digging into his palm, as his occupied hand rather roughly flipped the dex shut. “Halibel, c’mon back. We don’t-”
“Karp!” The cry was defiant, almost sad, as the Magikarp landed in the grass with an audible slap! Halibel’s single visible eye fell on Scarlet, wide and starting to water. It was such a pitiful stare, and it told him all he needed to know.
“You’ve got nothing to prove,” he said, frowning. “You tried your best. This is just a bad match up. Come on, let’s-”
“Karp…” Okay, this one was definitely sad. Her tiny black pupil found a new target on the Venonat, who quietly watched, one of its tiny fingers finding a home just below its mouth. It hazarded a glance back at Holly (because really, what was the magikarp going to do)?
“No, it’s cool,” she muttered sarcastically, eyelids lowering. “We’ve got alllll day.”
“Thanks,” Scarlet grinned, his hand resting on his chest as he let out a sigh. “I was worried we were- that is sarcasm, isn’t it.”
“Bravo,” Holly clapped, nodding to Venonat. The little bug slowly turned back toward Halibel, mandibles clicking as he waited for his order. “Yo, let’s go for another Confusion. Wrap up this sad little farce.”
“… Fine, Halibel. We just gotta dodge until this… thing wears off.” Halibel ‘karp’ed in response, and as Venonat’s eyes glowed with a crimson, she tensed up. Another bolt of psychic energy seemed to materialize before the bug, firing out viciously, and this time, thankfully, colliding with the ground. High in the air was a wildly flailing fish. “And they call splash useless.”
“Hah hah, I don’t know what universe your brain resides in, but this game is over.” The blue haired girl who was somehow, someway worse than Cyan rolled her eyes, distaste with the match up obvious. Venonat’s massive eyes did their horrible glowy thing, Confusion unleashing a telekinetic bolt toward Halibel at the apex of her jump. And as skilled as she was at jumping, she couldn’t do it in the air. That day, as the fish pokemon hurtled into the almost-artificial forest in a skyward arc, Scarlet could say that he knew what a shrieking fish sounded like.

Hideki casually tossed out a PokéBall, revealing that he, like Tessa, was battling with a Machop. This one looked a little more mature, standing strong and determined before its trainer. Muuma floated by Leon's shoulder, eyes on the Fighting-type. She certainly did not feel like battling another one of these so soon, but to her despair, Leon motioned her forward. Why couldn't he send out that trouble-making Gastly again? …that sort of answered her own question. Again, her reluctance remained inwards and she obediently entered that battlefield.
"I'll start things off," Hideki said. "Machop, Focus Energy!" The Superpower Pokémon braced itself a little, closing his eyes as he focused very seriously. A light glow overtook his body and his body appeared to get a little pumped up.
"Psywave," Leon responded quickly, and Muuma's body glowed as well, sending out a wave of blue rings towards her opponent.
"Machop!" Hideki cried out in warning, but it was too late; the rings smashed right into the Pokémon, and he was sent tumbling back. "Shoot! Get it back with Rock Slide!" Like Tessa, Hideki had the good fortune of having taught his Machop a Technical Machine attack. Unlike her, however, he had taught his only one, and so he was already a little frustrated. What could he do about it now, though? Live and learn. As he clambered back to his feet, Machop already looked a little worse for wear, but he immediately set to ripping out chunks of the floor and hurling them at Muuma. She cried out angrily as a couple of them hit her; was throwing rocks the only thing these heathens knew how to do?!
She drooped a little, her breathing becoming slightly labored. Leon watched her carefully, not having realized just how much the Payback from the previous battle had taken out of her. That Rock Slide had also landed a critical hit, thanks to the Focus Energy, and it was obvious that she was getting dangerously low on health. He had to end this now. He shifted a little where he stood, disappointed in himself; Muuma deserved better than that. He would be more careful with her.
"Come on, Muuma. One more Psywave should do," He said, and there was a slight gentleness to his voice this time. The Misdreavus straightened herself up (as a floating blob does) and her body glowed a little brighter than before as she put her all into this attack. This time, the Machop was a little more prepared, and tried to jump out of the way, but one of the rings caught his side and sent him spinning, allowing another to crash into him as well. He tried to push himself back up, but his arms gave out from under him and as he collapsed again, Hideki recalled the Pokémon. Leon immediately followed suit; Muuma had earned a good rest.

“… I’m done with this,” the redhead muttered. He turned on the spot, walking toward the probable impact crater his fish landed. The Mantle pokemon shifted awkwardly from side to side, a strange, disconcerting rumbling wail coming from deep in its core. Scarlet spared a glance back at him, a calming smile (that the Roggenrola couldn’t see) making its way on his face. “C’mon, Sledge. She’s waitin’ for us.”
The little rock’s feet moved in a tiny brown blur as he rushed to Scarlet’s side. Holly thanked Arceus that the stupid wail had subsided, and she’d even taken the liberty of grinning victoriously. “You weren’t half bad. Y’know. Until the fish. … That part was pretty bad.”
That’s when Scarlet stopped and looked back at her with an icy glance frigid enough to murder a flying type. “Spoiler alert. I got four pokemon. This isn’t over.” He unclipped a pokeball from his belt and tossed it over his shoulder, turning back toward the woods and beginning an eerily calm walk toward them.
There was a flash of light. Standing up on her hind legs, flames blazing atop her head, was what had become Holly’s least favorite pokemon, no, the bane of her existence. The Quilava cast a mildly confused look at her trainer (because really, what was the Venonat going to do?), awaiting some semblance of an order, or at least a cliff note version of why she was out before they reached the purple haired insect emperor.
“I gotta get Halibel. Finish off her team for me, wouldya?”
The excited grin that redheaded b*****d got in response was somehow even scarier to Holly than the glare he shot her just a few seconds ago. Venonat’s hand dropped from its mouth, eyes cast toward the ground. If its shoulders could’ve slumped… “Aww piss.”
---
“Are you sure you know where you’re going?” Alex asked. It’d been twenty whole minutes already! After a moment’s hesitation, she walked up closer to Clyde, trying to get a better look. However, the fact that the black haired boy wasn’t close to as tall as the gigantic redhead she’d met just yesterday didn’t take away from the fact that she’d managed to clear four and a half feet, and Clyde was being a stingy jerk with his Pokegear map.
“Yo, back up, you are in my personal space,” he growled, holding the smart phone as high above his head as he could. “I can read a map. I’ve been reading maps since before your parents considered bringing you into being.”
There wasn’t a real argument against logic that strong (except her dad’s newest lab partner had been studying pokemon for ten years and somehow didn’t know psychics couldn’t hit dark types, but Clyde didn’t seem that ditzy), so she sighed and pulled back. “I could swear we’ve seen that tree like four times,” she muttered to no one in particular, though she did take note when Evan nodded and Forte decided to start scratching trees to mark where they’d been already.
“How can you tell? We’re in a forest.” Clyde glanced back at her, an annoyed frown on her face. “Look, I’ve made this trip more times than I can count. So. Here’s an idea. Subject change. What’re you doing? Trying to catch our native 251? Badge collection? Elite Four? School skippin’? Joining one of those roaving poke-gangs?”
“What? Um, well no.” Taking care of 251 pokemon sounded like a painful exercise in the exhaustion and nerve fraying. Fighting eight of the best pokemon trainers in Kanto? Nooooope. And poke-gangs just sounded silly. “Uh, well. Um. I’m gonna find Arceus.”
“Ahhh, you’re one o’ those myth chasers, huh? You’re on the wrong landmass for catching the Sinnoh creation god, aintcha?”
“Yeah,” she said quietly, looking away from him toward a yellow flash in the grass a ways back and absentmindedly wondering if Hayley managed to find one of the elusive Pikachu that lived here. With a sigh, she looked back up at Clyde. “I need a stronger team, in case I have to fight him, so I’m catching pokemon I know.”
“Like your Forte? It’s no pokemon I’ve ever seen.”
A moment’s pause passed, with the blond uncomfortably fidgeting as she stared at the bored looking mole. “You’re not gonna believe me,” she said even more quietly than usual, somehow.
Clyde seemed to perk up at that. “Oh ho, so there is a story behind this. Well, c’mon. Don’t be stingy. Where’d you get her?”
“… Iwasbattlingtwofriendsandwejustgoteggsinaflashoflight,” she managed to blurt out. All she got back was a halt to the trip outside of the forest, a stare, and a frown. “I-I know it sounds crazy, but it’s true.”
“… Yeah, but I’ve heard things about the Saffron gym that make me shudder to think about, so I suppose it’s possible.” He stroked his chin and turned back around, redirecting his focus on the map. “I don’t think you’re lying, at any rate. That’s a nice party trick. Wish eggs spontaneously materialized in front of me too.”

Roughly fifteen minutes had passed before Jasper realized that he should have asked that Allan kid if he knew anything about TMs and how to use them. By then, of course, he'd already traversed quite a ways down the path and he figured it wasn't even likely that the boy would still be there if he went back. After congratulating himself on his flawless hindsight he continued on, arriving at the shortcut that would allow him to bypass the National Park completely. Not that he was in too much of a hurry to take a leisurely stroll through the park or anything like that, it was more that he found himself to be feeling pretty hungry; the sandwich that Ben had made for him back in Violet hadn't quite been enough.
Now, Jasper had taken this route many, many times before and never had any trouble getting through it (especially now that he no longer had to risk getting kicked his a** kicked by a rock tree with identity issues), so it was only natural that he stop and look on in a mixture of surprise and vexation as the narrow path had been obstructed by a small, yet smug-looking tree. "What." Jasper had every reason to feel insulted by the tree's very existence, for he'd passed by this way a few days a go and there had been nothing here but low shrubs and underbrush. He dismounted his bike and laid it on the ground before walking up to the tree to investigate it, though he remained at a relatively safe distance just in case it really was a Sudowoodo.
After poking it with a stick had yielded inconclusive results, the youth was hit by an incredible stroke of genius. A bit late, yes, but Jasper chose to place the blame on his hunger (a perfectly valid excuse in his opinion) as he snatched up Ditto's Pokeball. There was really only one thing that would make the Imitation Pokemon react (assuming that it was, in fact, a Sudowoodo), and that was to obnoxiously drench it with water. The blue transformer appeared at its trainer's feet, bobbing up and down in a rhythmic fashion. "Heya pal," the boy said, receiving a cheery gurgle in reply, and he motioned to the little tree. "Look familiar? Could use a little bit of water, if ya know what I mean."
Ditto looked at the tree, then back at Jasper, and then back at the tree again, staring long and hard before looking back up at Jasper again. It did know what the boy meant, as they'd managed to get past the Sudowoodo that used to hang out here a few times before (and with only a few rocks to the head to boot) and water was always the solution. Now, one wouldn't generally think that a lot of deep or even coherent thoughts went through the jellylike Pokemon's brain, as its usual vapid-smile didn't really convey much other than its generally cheerful disposition. Just the opposite was true, however, as Ditto possessed a level of intelligence that it liked to think rivaled (and if not, bettered) its trainer's. This was exactly the case right now, as the normal type blob could tell without the stick-poke test that this was a living, breathing (so to speak) tree, and not a Pokemon in disguise - it would know, after all, being rather well versed in the ways of imitation. Despite the many times that Ditto thought his trainer to be pretty smart (for a human, at least), right now the transformer was temporarily revoking that praise and it was times like these that made the amorphous Pokemon wonder if the boy had been dropped on his head as an infant. Honestly, who didn't know a real tree when they saw one - Jasper, obviously! Rising up as high as its squishy body would allow, it gestured emphatically at the tree, eliciting only a curious stare from the bandanna-clad boy as a response. Ditto sighed and slumped to the ground, still waving one "arm" at the tree.
In Jasper's defense, he didn't see anything more than his oldest friend and partner waving its "arms" around as though it had eaten far too much sugar, and the boy shrugged, wondering if this was a side-effect of the win over Falkner earlier. "Yeah, yeah, cut the theatrics and Transform into a water type already," he said, rooting through the side pouch of his backpack for one of his empty Pokeballs. "I'd get Croconaw to do it, but well, let's just say she's a little under the weather. Anyway, we're gonna catch that damned thing this time, I've had enough of it's BS." Sighing, Ditto rolled its eyes and looked away, trying to picture what having an actual tree on the team would be like. It also no longer believed that Jasper had been dropped on his head as a baby, no - clearly he'd been thrown at a wall.

Falkner was admittedly a little surprised to see the little mouse still standing after taking those hits, and he brushed the hair from his eyes with a swipe of his hand as Ben had ordered another Thundershock. This one seemed a bit on the wild side. "Pidgeotto, use Quick Attack to dodge," he called, watching intently as the Bird Pokemon tucked its wings in close to its body, a white light streaking behind in its wake. Pidgeotto was a considerably skilled flyer, maneuvering around the lightning with swift, practiced grace before it turned sharply, aiming to get its claws into the Electric-type for what would hopefully be the final time.

Train finally caught up to the Puppy Pokémon, but certainly not because of speed; Growlithe had gotten distracted by a Pidgey, and was busy barking at it as it flapped around angrily, squawking back at him. Train immediately recalled the Fire-type, clipping his PokéBall hastily back onto her belt. She sighed a little. Pikachu came bounding up behind her, and quickly tried to scramble up onto her shoulder.
It was at this point that Train realized her legs were hurting. She was panting slightly from running, and she picked Pikachu up off of her shoulder and set him down on the ground before plopping down to catch her breath. She looked up ahead of them and saw that the path seemed to split a few ways; two sets of stairs on either side of what looked like a short ledge.
After a few minutes, Train (reluctantly) pushed herself up onto her feet, fighting the urge to groan at the slight burning in her legs. She knew she was still probably quite a ways from Saffron, but she still had plenty of time to cover ground before nighttime rolled around. She dwelled on the thought of being stuck outside, alone, at night again, and suddenly she wanted the day to pass by much slower. She began moving forward, Pikachu at her heels.+=+=+=+=+ After a short conversation with Hideki, during which the gym trainer informed Leon that if he turned right (the battle had taken place in a corner and that was the only direction to go from this point), he would only come across another dead end. Leon nodded and turned to go back the way he'd come. Hideki called out, "Good luck!" after him.
Leon did not continue further into the gym. He retraced his steps (much easier with the even larger circle of light now following him around) and returned to the entrance. He exited and made his way right over to the Pokémon Center, handing over all four of his occupied PokéBalls. As he did so, his gaze focused on the PokéBall that housed the youngest member of his team; Litwick. It was hardly a day old, and he was unsure how he would go about training it. Though Muuma and Ghos had been obtained the same way (by normal egg, though, not magical egg), Muuma had grown up by his side and Ghos had happily battled shortly after he had hatched. Flambeau, however, seemed much, much more like a baby, and Leon wasn't sure if he would handle battles very well. After all, he was quick to tears without any damage being inflicted upon him.

She was sweaty, she was tired, she was a ******** idiot for wearing jeans, boots, and a jacket in the middle of the ******** summer. Train wiped her forehead with her sleeve, shaking her head a little after. Pikachu tried to climb onto her again, and she unclipped his PokéBall from her belt. He growled a little, digging his claws into her jacket to latch on. "Pikachu, I'm tired," She said, enlarging the ball. "I feel like my shoulders are going to fall off. Please just rest in here for a little while." The Mouse Pokémon grumbled, but he could hear the exhaustion in his trainers voice, and loosened his grip on her. Train was about the recall him when she paused and said, "Oh, wait," and pulled out a small snack from her bag. She pulled off the wrapper and held it up to Pikachu, who gobbled it down. Then she pressed the button and he disappeared in a flash of red light.
With that, the girl trudged along. Her feet were absolutely killing her, and as she looked up at the sky, she realized it was later than she thought. The sun was lower in the sky than she'd expected, and it was likely going to begin getting darker within the next hour. She shivered, but it wasn't really that cold. Wasn't there anything around here?

And then, eventually, it was sunset. The girl moved to the edge of the path she was, and she could see the path that one of those sets of stairs had led to. She hadn't run into any aggressive Pokémon since recalling Pikachu, which was nice, as she super did not feel like battling. She tried to find some nice trees to set up camp by, rather than just being out in the open. She only managed to find one tree, but it was still some sort of landmark that made her feel a little better. She pulled out a small, thin blanket from her bag and curled up under it, and though it felt good to just sit and rest, she was definitely not sleepy yet.
Her stomach growled and she pulled some of the food out of her bag. Had she not eaten all day? She hadn't even had breakfast with her Pokémon that morning. God damn. She wolfed down some of the food she'd bought at the PokéMart and downed an entire water bottle. She'd eaten so quickly that she'd even had to take a couple of quick breaths. She glanced around, as it was now completely dark, save for the light from the stars and the moon, and shivered again. She pulled the blanket up tighter around her, and her fingers trailed across her belt. She tapped on Pikachu's and jumped a little as the light exploded from it, but relaxed as the Pokémon appeared next to her. The blonde pulled him closer, under her blanket with her, and he snuggled up against her side. It was definitely much better now to be alone.
But it was that exact thought that brought her mood down further, and she frowned. She loved her Pokémon; they were great! She cared for them and cherished them dearly, but…she began to realize just how alone she was. She'd had a temporary companion, sure, but she never quite liked him and he had disappeared suddenly. She must have taken too long at the gym, or perhaps he'd felt similarly towards her. Did she have the luxury of being picky when she had literally no friends? Train pulled out her PokêNav and scrolled through her contacts. There were just a few people from Pallet Town, nobody she could really talk to. Just people she happened to know and had said, "Hey, let's exchange phone numbers!" But nobody of particular importance, or closeness. She had a badge, she'd traveled probably halfway across the region, and she still hadn't made any friends. She was exhausted, achey, and alone. These thoughts, mixed with the fear constantly creeping up in the back of her mind as she huddled against a tree in the middle of the night, that sent tears springing into her eyes. She squeezed Pikachu again, who grunted in protest, as he'd managed to fall asleep. The girl sighed shakily and slid down, moving her backpack behind her to use as a pillow so that she could lay down, and squeezed her eyes shut.
Sleep did not come quickly, but it did come.

Keegan was already decidedly tired of this battle as he watched the now-enraged Zangoose growl fiercely up at the ceiling. Whoever thought that it was a good idea to stick a bunch of trainers in front of the gym leader to decide if challengers are "worthy" should be dragged out behind the woodshed and shot, the redhead thought irritably, now looking past the Zangoose to the door again. He was so close now, and he felt his heart start to race a little faster at the prospect of getting in there and getting that badge from Norman. "Artemis, Wing Attack," he called, not bothering to look up at his Pokemon. He never could tell which one was real anyway, so he could only hope that his opponent would experience a similar problem.
Half a dozen screeching noises echoed from above as Artemis seemed to come in from all sides, and the redhead watched with some satisfaction as the Zangoose's anger quickly changed to confusion as the back of its head was struck with a solid wing. It swiped its claws wildly at the retreating birds, managing to defeat a copy as it did so. Jody watched the battle unfold with a critical gaze, also unable to figure out which Swellow was the real one. "Just stay calm, Zangoose!" she called. "Wait until it gets close, and then hit it with your Fire Punch!" Nodding, the feline-like Pokemon dropped back down to all fours, gazing skyward as it tried to get a read on Artemis.
"First, you gotta catch her," Keegan said in a low, almost singsong voice. He'd nearly forgotten that battling with the cheeky Flying-type generally picked up his own mood, as well. "Agility." A chorus of trills erupted from overhead, and as the redhead looked up, the ceiling was filled with streaks of blue and red. He could also hear Zangoose's growls picking up again, and he grinned. So he had to wait just a little longer to get to Norman; defeating everyone else in the gym as well as the leader would make it feel like that much more of a victory.

It did not take long at all for Leon's Pokémon to be healed completely, and he politely thanked the nurse (though it probably did not seem polite to anyone else) as he collected the PokéBalls from her. He strode quickly from the center and back to the Dewford Gym, and was somewhat relieved that the light surrounding him did not seem to have diminished at all.
It took a little longer than he'd wanted it to, but eventually Leon made his way back to the spot he'd been before turning and running into Hideki. As he chose a different path (and luckily there were not many left to choose from), there was a sudden flash of light from one of the pockets in his coat, and the little candle he'd been thinking about not too long ago appeared before him. "Lit!" It cried happily, beaming up at Leon. The purple-haired boy reached for the Litwick's PokéBall, but paused before withdrawng his hand. Flambeau was never going to learn or grow if he just kept him in his PokéBall all the time, so instead, Leon said, "Stay close to me, okay, Candle?" and began making his way forward again. Flambeau followed his for a moment on the ground, but soon raised himself up into the air, opting to float after his trainer instead. The Litwick glanced around, noticing that there was more darkness, albeit less than in the cave. Was everywhere like this? Not that he minded.
Finally, they came to the end of the hallway, which opened into a larger section that appeared to be an arena. Leon was certain that this was where Brawly was waiting for challengers, and he looked around, making sure to locate the the Dewford gym leader before issuing his challenge.

Brawly let out a soft breath through his nose as he sat in his wicker chair, enjoying his usual post-surf decompression. He sat beside a solitary lamp, which provided just enough light for him to read. He sat in relative silence, his focus gently pulled by the occasional sounds of battle. Hm. Must be his trainers practicing. The thought made him smile. They really were a hard-working bunch of dudes and dudettes. He drowned it out, going back to his book. However, it was the subtle brightening of his gym that really grabbed his attention. "Oh, a challenger." he mused, smiling as the words became that much easier to read. "Thanks for the light." He continued reading, muttering soft words of appreciation under his breath for each battle his soon-to-be foe won. It was still dark, of course, but Brawly had spent so much time in these conditions he pretty much had night vision.
In no time at all, the gym leader heard the sound of hard, uncertain footsteps approach him. "What timing," he said to himself. "Just at the end of my chapter." He quickly scanned the last few sentences and snapped the book shut. He remained in his seat, waiting for the challenger to round the corner. It seemed he brought a lantern with him, judging from the light that-oh no, wait. It was a Pokemon. Brawly raised an eyebrow at the creature. Whatever it was, it certainly wasn't from Hoenn. His eyes turned to the boy. Tall, dark, dramatic clothing, semi-disinterested expression. Interesting. He waited until his challenger made eye contact, and smiled politely, giving him a simple wave.
"Yo."
------
Okay. Meowth. Normal type. Pas de problème! Sasha had seen plenty of them around, they were incredibly popular as pets in the city. Nearly every uptight house guest that visited her home had one. This particular one looked pretty small. She reached for Pierre's pokeball, knowing he could end the match in record time, but stopped herself. She did just make a promise to Omelette that he would get a chance to battle, and here was a perfect opportunity. "Fffff-ine!" she unhooked the Marill's pokeball and released him instead.
"Ril!" the mouse grunted, flexing. He knew she couldn't keep him cooped up for too long. And who was this dork? Omelette scoffed at his puny competition, which entirely offended said Meowth and her trainer. Sasha sighed. She hoped that she wasn't making a huge mistake.
14 minutes.
"Pretty cocky for a mouse to underestimate a cat," Kathy said with a haughty laugh. "but I suppose like trainer, like Pokemon. Meowth, Scratch!" Eager to prove his namesake, the Scratch Cat Pokemon extended his sharp claws and lunged at his adversary.
Whatever girl. If Omelette loses I will smush your cat with my Golem. We'll see you laugh z'hen. "Omelette, faisceau de bulles!" Kathy frowned at Sasha's command, wondering what in the world 'face der bulls' meant. She'd soon find out as the Marill took in a deep breath and spewed forth a scattering of bubbles from his mouth, which popped violently as they made contact with the cat. Annoyed but undeterred, Meowth pressed on and slashed Omelette across his fat belly. Ow! That actually hurt...was what a wuss would say! Not waiting for his trainer's command, Omelette swung his little paw upward, catching Meowth in the chin with a surprisingly powerful looking uppercut, which sent the cat spiraling to the ground. There. That's better than any sissy bubbles.
Both trainers looked on in shock of Omelette's action.
"What was that?" Kathy asked. "Well, damn." was all Sasha could say in reply.

After a few seconds, Kasiya's eyes adjusted to the brightness outside and she stretched a bit, sighing contentedly. It was rather nice out, and she looked around, wondering two things: where was Mike (he said he'd meet her outside, after all), and how had Hayley fared in her gym battle against Brock yesterday? The first of these questions would be answered very quickly, however, as the brown-haired boy in question made an appearance.
"So that was your cunning plan," she called back, grabbing a Pokeball of her own and tossing it up and down a few times. She smiled as Mike sent out his Torkoal, Vesuvius. The fiery tortoise wasn't unfamiliar to her, and she felt a slight tug as she recalled Flannery's (she'd seen it in battle a few times now, once against Keegan and she herself had battled it) Torkoal. If she remembered correctly, it had crazy defensive powers to go with its impressive flame attacks, though it speed was, well, rather unimpressive, for lack of a better word. Perfect opportunity for Digger, she thought, releasing the quiet-natured Sandslash. Digger also squinted a bit under the bright light, sitting back on his hind legs before scratching behind his ear. Why was he out here in the stupid sun? The Ground-type looked around before spotting the Torkoal and he gave a small grunt. Apparently it was time to do that fighting-thing again.
As a second thought, the blonde released her little Minccino, the Chinchilla Pokemon perching happily on her shoulder (after giving the girl a quick once over for cleanliness reasons). "Now you watch closely, okay, Pepper? Pretty soon you'll start battling and getting stronger, too." The Normal-type simply nodded along, not fully understanding but she watched anyway. "Okay Digger, how about we start off with... um... Poison Sting!" The Sandslash said nothing in reply as he stood up, sizing up his opponent once more before jumping up and tucking into a quick ball. He spun a few times, shooting off a volley of toxic needles at the fiery tortoise.
=-=-=-=-= Professor Oak had just finished giving detailed instructions to the construction crew (as they'd arrived quite promptly to start repairs on the damaged section of wall from the Team Rocket morons from earlier) when he heard a loud knocking on the door. "More visitors?" the professor chuckled he strolled down the hallway, checking a clock on the wall as he passed it by. "It's already getting quite late," he murmured, now able to understand why his stomach was grumbling so loudly. He'd completely missed lunch.
"Oh! Kressen, m'boy!" Oak laughed as he opened the door. He'd almost forgotten about the tall redhead! "Did you have any luck with that Water-type you were after?"

Leon's gaze fell upon the blue-haired man and he approached, Flambeau bobbing around him. For a moment, he moved in circles around his trainers torso, but a stern look from the boy sent him wafting to the ground like a discarded piece of paper. The flame atop his head dimmed considerably, and his wax body melted a little, sticking him to the ground. Leon did not seem to notice this development, but took only a few more steps before he was close enough to Brawly. The gym leader greeted him rather casually, a simple, "Yo."
Leon really wanted to say, "You know why I'm here," or something alone the lines of that, but he knew all about formalities and being polite and such. He was only ever rude unintentionally.
The trainer locked eyes with Brawly, issuing his challenge. "I've come to challenge you to an official match."
