Terryn shook her head. "He sort of ran through into the kitchen and then he was gone." She chuckled at the woman's dishevelled appearance. "Is my poor father in trouble?"

The Duchess smiled stiffly. "Very much so." And with that, she rushed into the kitchen after the earl.
Marcus could hold it in no longer, and burst into laughter as soon as the Duchess disappeared from view.

"Hide me." The earl had opened up the pantry door and enterd it, closing the door behind him and instructing the cooks not ot say a word to the duchess when she entered. So he was playing an immature game of hide and seek, but it made him feel youthful and less awkward than having to sit there and explain everything to her.

The cooks were generally an obedient lot, and all of them respected the earl, but the Duchess's chilling glares were more than enough. One of the cooks actually threw open the pantry door and hung her head immediately.
"Arvin. Honestly. What is it?" asked the Duchess, raising her eyebrows.

The earl swallowed hard, trying to give her a smile. "Oh, I just thought I would spend some time in here, seeing what was for supper tonight."

The Duchess sighed. "Arvin, come out of the pantry. I'm genuinely concerned for Marcus, and Terryn. As much as I would like them to be married, I will not allow them to see each other if Marcus is more interested in being a rake."

"Marcus is not interested in being a rake." He sighed and exited the room, bringing the duchess back through the dining room and onto the terrace. "I can not tell you what he has been doing. That is his own choice and I do not wish to betray a confidence."

The Duchess prepared herself to explode, but took a deep breath. "Is it detrimental to any of us? What he has been doing, I mean. Answer honestly, now."

The earl shook his head. "No, not at all. It is not as though he has comissioned a mercenary to come after us or anything."

The Duchess sighed. "Very well. I suppose I really can't do anything to change your mindset, after all." The Duchess suprised herself. She never gave in, never admitted defeat. Really, she was never defeated.

"No, not really." The earl chuckled awkwardly, trying to get out of the hot seat.

The Duchess sighed again. "Come along, then. Were you planning to take Terryn home after breakfast?"

"If she so desires." The earl shrugged his shoulders. "I do not want her to impose though."

The Duchess shook her head. "Not at all. She is free so stay as long as she would like."
Marcus finally spotted them out on the terrace through a window. "They look very grave," he reported to Terryn.

"Very." Terryn frowned. "We shall tell them of us soon perhaps. At least it will give them something to satisfy them for the time being."
