I had a character who suffered a great deal of angst and guilt and during the course of a few months' roleplay he had an innocent's death blamed on him, a brother die, one of his lungs punctured, a hand infected with undead rot, the other hand broken, his house broken into, and countless other burdens. But his life was cake and pie compared to his girlfriend's. XD Her player got her character into even more drama than I could mine. It was just hilarious watching them survive one tragedy after the other.
