"Because that's who he is," Dari offered with a shrug, "He has a deep fear of his own emotions. He puts up walls. I'd say he had one up this morning." He looked off toward the door. He hadn't even waved goodbye, just verbally battled and gotten his way.
"But he's going to deny it." Like the little boy that threw sand in his little crush's hair.

"Well. That's handy knowledge. When Toby puts up a wall he becomes an idiot." She'd sat back down, since Dari seemed more interested in talking than leaving. "Oh. Hm. So how do I get him to admit it?"

"Uh... yes. More or less." Dari took her cue and sat down too, right back in the position he had been before. He then held up a hand. "If you confront him about it, he'll only get defensive and put up more figurative walls." He paused then, but only briefly.
"Maia, have you spoken with Lori yet about 'selkie love?'"

Maia leaned back against her chair. "Then I won't confront him about it," She promised. "Selkie love?" She asked, looking puzzled. "No. What is it?"

Uh-oh.
"Well, it's an affliction of selkies to often fall for lonely people, male or female. It feels the same as any love, but once the loneliness is gone they lose interest. I'm not saying that's what you're feeling but it could be. I know Toby is deeply lonely in some ways. I just wanted to let you know of the possibility."

An affliction. Maia frowned slightly. "Everyone's lonely in some ways," she said. Was she expected to go about falling for everyone who'd lost someone? She shrugged. "I don't think that's it," she said after a moment of consideration. "Thank you, Dari. Lets go home now. Please."

Dari half-smiled. It was an oddly Toby-like expression. Well that was good, if Maia thought it wasn't selkie love. It had developed sort of late on too, he thought, but such things could happen. Toby had already been a target before. It was good too that Maia now understood the possibility. She didn't want to talk about it, but he didn't think he would in her position either.
"Alright, come on. The butterflies hurting happens, I hear."

Maia offered him her hand and stood. "I think I understand why Toby was so unhappy this morning. If he thinks I like him because of selkie love, and he likes me back, as soon as he's happy enough with me to stop being lonely, he thinks I'll leave. I won't though." She wanted to lock herself in her room and think.
"How do I make it stop? The butterflies?"

Dari took the proffered hand and started with Maia out of the apartment, leaving it unlocked as they left in case Toby wanted to return there.
"I don't know. I don't think you can. I've never been in this situation before. All of my information is secondhand." There were many more reasons Toby had to be afraid, but now wasn't the time. Maia looked mentally exhausted. "Apparently they can go away on their own."

"I hope they go away soon," Maia said, following Dari down the hall. "Do you think Toby will come for lunch?" She asked. Maybe if she felt up to it she could make something for him. "Do we have a set of checkers at home?"

"He may. He usually comes home early these days. He gets nothing done, hurts, and comes home. I wasn't kidding about his ego." Dari released Maia's hand to hold the door open for her after crossing down the invisible hallway. "We do. Do you want to play?"

Maia walked through the door when it was opened for her. "Maybe later," she said. "I think I'll nap first." And think. She had to think. She'd argued with Toby, when he'd upset already.

Dari nodded. "Alright. Whatever you want. I have today off, so I'll be around. I may have to come get Toby. ...probably not. He'll want to drive home anyway."

Once home, Maia had run upstairs to her room and stayed there without a sound until about one in the afternoon. She emerged then, hair missed from laying in bed, and wandered to the kitchen. She made herself a piece of toast, buttered it, and took a bite.
No, it seemed, she didn't feel up to cooking. "Dari, do you want to play checkers?"

Dari looked up from the couch where he had been resting and sat up. "Sure. Let me get the box." He got up to head for the basement where such things were stored and at that moment the front door opened. Toby came in with a furrowed brow and the nearest thing to a frown he could muster unconsciously. He looked exhausted. He looked old. He dropped his things next to the couch and reached for his iPod. God, today. Today had been interesting. His legs hurt. His face felt bruised. It had been time to go home. Dari stopped by the doorway to the basement just behind the stairs. Toby looked more worn than usual. Clearly Maia was something else.
