Children Of The Flame

"Come," Lex said, smiling widely, "we should also go in. I also have to wash up before I eat, though I have to say I'll be quite a bit faster than Seeker. She loves water so much, I never could understand it."

It's not as if there's a lot of water for her to play in out here, Gion signed as they started forward again. We're in the middle of a desert after all, and even our river gets fairly low at times. Thankfully it's never gone dry, but I worry sometimes ...

Lore understood that, it would be worrisome if the river would gone dry, he wondered if the river always was here, or not. He followed Gion and nodded at his words.

"Has this always been a desert?"

Gion shook his head. Far from it, he signed. Until the last war, it was a forest, much like the forests of the Borderlands and Westland. It's quite natural, though, the eastern Southland - where we elves live - has a thousand year cycle: one thousand years of desert, one thousand years of forest, though there is never snow or cold.

Well that would make sense if it was hot enough to have a desert, it sounded normal enough though. It must have been something to have the land turn like that, not to mention interesting.

"It must be quite a forest then," Lore murmured.

He wondered what type of forest would occur, since it would still be warm, if not hot at moments.

Gion shrugged. I wouldn't know, he signed apologetically. That was before my time.

"But not before mine," Lex said quietly, smiling faintly. "It was indeed very beautiful. I used to love traveling then, it was so much nicer than it is now. It was sad when the trees began to die, but ... it's a part of nature, and so it can't be helped."

Lore nodded, he understood time did funny things, he had seen the weather patterns change where he lived. Though nothing like this, it was certain different as the decades rolled on.

"It will make it even more exciting then, when the green starts to show again," Lore murmured.

"It will indeed," Lex agreed, "though it will be many years from now."

Gion shrugged. If all goes well, we'll be here to see it, he signed. And if it is as wonderful as you describe, then it will be well worth the wait.

Lore certainly hoped so, even though time passed quickly back in Gaia, it was the reason why he hoped so. Years passing so quickly it would be awful (and a scary thought) to think about if people you knew one day weren't here the next.

As the men drew near the house, the door opened and Elnara stepped out. She had woken a short while earlier, but of course not knowing where Gion and Lore had gone, she couldn't go after them - but when Seeker had come in to get washed up for dinner, Elnara had decided to go outside to greet the others as they returned.

She'd had a restful sleep, then bathed and changed her clothes, and her still-damp hair flowed loosely down her back. She was wearing the dress Luthien had lent her again, the one of pale green spidersilk, along with the scarf that went with it.

"Did you have a good walk?" she called out as they drew closer, smiling softly, her eyes sparkling with pleasure. "Gion didn't tell you too many embarrassing stories about me, did he?"

Lore laughed at that, "Actually Seeker did most...." he paused for a moment to think about it, "Nearly... all of the talking?"

He had to admit, he was pretty sure at this point it was Seeker who talked the most and of course Seeker didn't have any stories about Elnara. Though she had a lot about her mishaps, at least she wasn't embarassed about them.

Elnara giggled. She hadn't been able to spend a lot of time with her niece, unfortunately, because of falling asleep, but from what she could tell she seemed like a chatty enough little girl.

"Well, come inside," she smiled at the three of them, "dinner's ready and waiting for us all. Hello, Lex."

"Hello, Elnara," Lex grinned back at her. "Welcome back. I can see you've been doing well, I'm glad things have worked out for you. Don't suppose you intend to take over the plantation again, have you?"

He sounded half serious, half joking. Truth be told, he was glad she was back, and wished she didn't have to leave again - and after all, the plantation did belong to her.

Lore took Elnara's hand as they walked back inside. Though he was more interested in her answer to Lex's question, though it there was a joking tone about it, it too had to wonder a bit. Since this was.. in a way her home and no one here would ever deny that this was a home for her to come to.

Elnara twined her fingers with Lore's and giggled at Lex's question.

"You know I'm not," she told him seriously, though her tone was light. "I could never stay here again ... I don't mean the plantation, specifically, but in this world. I don't belong here anymore, my home is in Gaia now."

And ... that reminded her. "I have something I'd like to tell everyone at dinner," she added as an afterthought.

Lex and Gion both looked intrigued at that.

"Well, now you've got me curious," Lex chuckled as they entered the house. "You're going to wait, though, aren't you? No chance you could tell us now?"

Gion grinned and poked his father-in-law good-naturedly.
