Heh... Lie algebras... I still have my brute force algorithms for gleaming structure constants and Casimir operators from SU(3) somewhere on my PC. Non-Abelian gauge invariance ftw.

Incidentally, does anyone here have any MPI experience? I have a couple of Qs if you do.

Edit: I assume you mean Message Passing Interface, not Message Parsing Interpreter. If you are looking for help with MUCKs it will be a totally different story.

I'm trying to embed parallel ICA code into analysis pipelines. I'm not ninja enough yet, and I can't find decent documentation for Electroencephalography algorithms. I'm trying to find the 'MPI community' if such a network even exists. A PhD possibly hangs in the balance (well I'm probably being a little dramatic... but still....)

Do you know of any MPI forges or recipe resources? For once my university library has actually failed me.

Are you looking at any one MPI implementation in particular? As far as I can tell, each implementation has its own 'community' of sorts, typically limited to the form of mailing lists. Unfortunately, I do not believe there are any real code sharing resources. I learned mostly through books, though this site had useful tutorials.

I am not sure just what you are needing, but if you have any more specific questions I can try to help.

P.S. It would have been cooler for your PhD to involve MUCKs.

And the chance of actually receiving funding is particularly low this year due all the government money sunk into the bail-out... or so I gather from discussion with colleagues: In particular, I've garnered that NIH funding is especially difficult this year (though I'm biased-- my grant proposal is currently on hold) and I assume it's the same for NSF. Best of luck!

Government automatically pays my postgrad fees, as well as giving me spending monies 3nodding . Though most of my monies comes from teaching 2nd year undergrad kiddies calculus. So I can now afford to splash out on beans as well as toast.

Nice!!! I was a graduate teaching fellow for most of my Doctoral work so I didn't have to worry about grants-- but I did have to teach every term; in the end that was very much to my advantage smile

It's been my last post-doc that required me to apply for grants... I've pretty much given up on getting funding for this one-- one of the three major points in my proposal (and by far and away the most interesting) was rendered irrelevant by recent software to come out of the Max Planck institute-- six more months and I would have been done! C'est la guerre.

It's all good though-- I've got a six month gig teaching computer science to undergrads which should hold me over until I or one of my collaborators get some funding for a new (and frankly more interesting) project.

Urgle. I'm decent at teaching, but only stuff that I'm personally interested in, and mostly in a weird, interactive style. I got a bunch of high-schoolers to build the p-adics from the rationals in a matter of hours, but that was because I didn't have to guide them through problem sets and I got a lot of amusement watching them struggle against the metric.
I was a normal TF for two semesters; the kids liked me but I was a horrible section leader, although that's partly because I didn't know the material at all.

Maybe it's just my experience, but it seems that a lot of research in physics essentially boil down to solving the matrix equation a = Mb stressed

Maybe it's just me being weird, but Ricci flow seems really silly to me. "By making a differential equation from the metric based on general relativity and the heat equation, we get that the manifold breaks apart (modulo some surgery) into canonical Einstein manifolds"

Seriously, wtf? Why does this work?

Don't know... but one of the main contributors to the technique is inordinately fond of penguins (true story).
