Same here. Plus, the intelligence level around here is a step up from a lot of other places, I think.

Yes, Fauxlorne is right! I used to be in an FF guild and there were so many members posting that I couldn't keep up. And the fact that most of my posts went by unnoticed made me want to quit. I felt like I never was never truly accepted there for some reason. rolleyes

Yes faltorpann, you said it!

Ha-ha, yes Berz! It seems we have the most intelligent group of people around. mrgreen

I hate when posts go unnoticed. You have no idea if anyone even read it, or if they just didn't want to talk.

Good e'en! wink

Name: Laura
Nickname: Bevin is my Ren name, so I suppose I could use that (bay-vin)
Age: 21
Birthday: May 22nd
Location: Allendale, MI, USA

I'm blessed with the fact that my university runs it's own Ren faire, where I am a minstrel and sometimes a wench. I'm trying out to be the herald in a few days! And we have our anual feast this weekend!!!!!!! (hopefully it won't snow, as we are out in cabins). As for other things... I've been going to faires since I was 12, and have been slightly obsessed with the time period for much of my life. Love fantasy (movies, literature, etc.), especially Arthurian legend and Celtic mythology.

Welcome aboard, Bevin! One of my dearest friends has that as her SCA name! smile

It sounds from your description that you'll fit in just fine here--feel free to poke about and read, and post! smile

I agree with Faltorpann! You can never tell but, I don't post at a thread if I have nothing worthwhile to say. rolleyes

Hey! We got a newbie here! Welcome Laura! I hope you like this guild. Laura is a very nice name btw. Say, did you get to be the herald?
PostPosted: Tue Apr 01, 2008 8:58 pm

Thanks for the welcome!

And they changed the herald audition, so it's now next Thursday. And I've gone from the only one wanting it to competing against 2 other people that don't really want to do it. I have the blessing of the man who was herald last year though!

I'm not sure how different it would be. We aren't part of the SCA, but we are very similar and get a lot of our ideas from things they do.
What does being a herald in the SCA entail? I would like to know what I'm getting into lol

You are most welcome Laura! I'd like Jasta to answer you cuz I have no idea what the "SCA" is neither.

Hey Prema! Nice to see you posting here. I had no idea that word meant firecracker. Thanks for sharing and welcome again! mrgreen

New People! Greetings Prema! And greetings Laura!

Can I state my amusement at the not so slow take-over of the guild by
Midwesterners?

(Laura, question that I swear isn't that random... are you at GVSU? Or where else in this state has a University RenFaire?)

The SCA is the Society for Creative Anachronism, which is a large worldwide network of Medieval and Renaissance enthusiasts (with a LOT of interest in other periods before the "exact Medieval" era and for a short time after the pure Renaissance (for instance, up to the Cavalier era, with a topmost date of 1650). You can find out much more info here:

http://www.sca.org/

There are Kingdoms in most countries, the larger the country the more Kingdoms... one becomes King (or Queen) by fighting and winning in Crown Tourney, and you have to have a chosen Consort so they can be the co-ruler. Once you win, you're Prince/Princess for 6 months then King/Queen for 6 more, so it's quite an investment of time. Lots of travel, spiffy clothes, bureaucracy... but lots of fun too.

SCA folks have many different interests, and there are a lot of camping-style events, where some folks really try hard to make their encampment look like it might have in the period they like best. I do a lot of classic Tudor stuff (1490s to 1601, though I usually stick to the 1530s).

Heraldry is the art AND science of designing and registering period-accurate designs to uniquely identify the person who owns it; as was done in period, we use portions of our "devices" to identify our belongings, and we display the devices in many ways: banners, on clothing, on furniture, on pavilions, and so forth. It really makes events look historical! Heraldry (at least in the SCA) also involves helping people create accurate names for themselves and their households, correct as much as possible to the era, the language, and the historical practice of our ancestors. Further, Heraldry in the SCA (mimicking the real-world to a certain extent) also involves helping the monarchy and the local authorities (Barons and Baronesses of local groups) to conduct their business. When someone holds court in an official capacity, the Herald is the Loud Voice of that authority: calling the populace to order so everyone can hear; maintaining the schedule and calling people into Court, calling for cheers once an award is given, that sort of thing. The Heralds then have to make a full written report to the Crown, the College of Heralds, and the local authorities. Heralds also make announcements during events, having been trained to project their voices in order to shout out intelligible news when people need it (for instance, "Oyez, Oyez! All gentles pray attend! Their Majesties will be judging the Arts and Sciences competition in ONE HOUR! Pray be certain all your entries are in place and properly registered before that time! Thank you!" *grins*)

And that's just one tiny facet of the SCA... smile Lots more to see and do. And most of us are Rennfaire Rats as well, either attending, working, or merchanting.

In the SCA, I live in the Barony of Ponte Alto in the Kingdom of Atlantia; I am a Court Baroness (I get the title and a neat coronet to wear, but don't have to be responsible for a large group--just my personal honour!) and I am a pursuivant herald, which basically means I've reached a certain level of expertise--I did serve the Barony of Stierbach as their titled Herald for numerous years, but retired for medical reasons a couple of years ago. My SCA name is Meleri ferch Iasper ap Dafydd Du; I am a Welshwoman born in the 1490s and I now work as an embroidress to Queen Anne Boleyn at the court of Henry VIII. The name means that I am Meleri (which is the equivalent of "my Helen"), daughter of Jasper the son of David the Black. smile
