Taka grinned, his beliefs had been confirmed this boy had serious drive. 'Good' Taka thought 'the kid will need it to survive in this world.' Taka patted the boy's head and spoke "Excellent then you can prove strong you've become, so far, by eating this ramen." Not a moment after he said that Shippo came out the back kitchen with two big bowls of ramen in his arms. "Alright guys here ya go eat up." Shippo said as he both bowls down in front of Batsu and Taka. "Ah at last! Thank you Shippo." Taka said as he prepared to eat his bowl. With that Taka took a bite of the super-spicy ramen aqnd easily swallowed down the spiciness. "Ahhh I just love your ramen Shippo, even if it is a tad spicy."

Batsu looked up at the man called 'Shippo' and gave a polite bow as he spoke. "Thank you sir." The boy then reached for a couple of chopsticks and broke them apart as he looked down at the ramen. "Itadakimasu" he said as he stared hard at concoction. After gathering his wits and getting his fingers prepared, he grabbed some ramen in his chopsticks and brought the food to his mouth.

As soon as Batsu's tongue touched the salty meal, his entire being collapsed. He... wanted... to... die. It tasted like someone had put the world's supply of salt into one bowl. The boy tried to maintain his composure but he was secretly cursing Shippo in his mind. He just knew that this type of food was illegal SOMEWHERE, but apparently not here.

Batsu tried to shake the fear off and he went for another go at the salty food. Unfortunately his tastebud still was unable to take anymore of the food. The boy's tongue touched the ramen again and he drew back in reflex again This time, his face turned up in disgust and he frowned heavily. Batsu wanted to push the bowl away so bad, but it would be rude of him to waste Taka-sensei's money like that.

Batsu gave the ramen yet another go and as he placed a strand of ramen in his mouth he felt like throwing up. The salt shock proved to be too much for him and he spit the strand out. The poor boy was suffering but he really wanted to eat, and DIDN'T want to appear too weak.

Batsu just looked down at the ramen and sighed. The boy was getting extremely frusstrated with himself. He was being defeated by food! Like seriously, who loses to something that can't move?! This made Batsu upset and he gripped his chopsticks tighter. After a deep scowl, Batsu took a huge chunk of ramen and shoved the mass in his mouth. After a bit of squirming and frowning, Batsu chewed the food slowly and swallowed the ramen. The boy was not exactly happy about it and thought he did some serious work. He started banging his head on the counter repeatedly.

"Too much... toooo much!"

Taka continued to eat his own Spicy Ramen. Occasionaly he'd look over to Batsu, only to see him continue to struggle with eating the extremely salty ramen. "There ya go Batsu it may taste horrible but it'll put hair on your chest!" Taka then grinned as he went back to eating his own ramen. 'Yup the boy had guts and he isn't going to give up easily.' Taka tought as he took another bite.

(You SUCK!)

"I'm only 11 Taka-sensei, why would I want hair on my chest?!" Batsu turned and gave Taka-sensei a questionable stare as he took another bite of ramen. It kinda went down bad and he choked a bit.

By now, Batsu had had enough. The boy was starting to feel drained. He knew when enough was enough and now was proving to be too much. He didn't want to kill himself over a bowl of ramen, so he pushed the bowl away and dropped his chopsticks on the counter.

"I need a break Taka-sensei. I feel like I'm gonna be sick."

((Gotta train!)

By now Batsu had had enough of the ramen, especially since it tasted awful and he REALLY wanted to get back to the academy. Their was much more work for him to do and he was getting behind in that work. He hated to leave his sensei like this, but he thought in his mind that he'd understand since he was going back to the academy.

Batsu hopped down from the counter and excused himself from the shop. "Sorry Taka-sensei.. sorry Mr. Shippo, but I wanna go back to the academy. forgive me!" After he made his apologies, Batsu headed out the door and made a mad dash to the training grounds.

"Man, that wasn't hard, but it was definitely boring. Hopefully this won't be so bad."
The boy continued to talk to himself as he walked up to the ramen shop and drew back the curtain at the entrance. As he went inside, he saw Shippo inside standing over a pot of boiling water. He then stopped and pivoted his body so he could see the new entry.

"Hello and welcome to Hikromi Zitso. What will it be?"
The man was cheerful. Maybe because it was a new customer and he knew he'd make some monney? Who knew?

Batsu stood there and slid his hands in his pocket as he replied. "Nothing sir. I was sent by Mayumi-san because you had asked about someone running some errands for you."

"The man's cheerful disposition became even more noticeable when he started smiling. The boy was here to help him out and he wasn't gonna waste any time. Shippo grabbed a slip of paper from behind the counter and offered it to Batsu. "Yes... I need these items for a new recipe. Get them to me so I can get started." The man then reached in his cash register and pulled out 15 ryo and placed them in Batsu's hand along with the list. "Bring back the change."

"This place looks fishy."

That was Inori's first comment of the local "famous" ramen store. He was eyeing rather critically the state of the stand, the filthy cloth that made up the only shield from the cruelties of Mother nature, the scratched dusty wooden benches - what on earth does shinobi bring? - some of which were deeper than others. His eye twitched, suddenly feeling for some reason very apprehensive of just how wise it was to eat here.

He looked at Nero helplessly. "Can we try some less shady-..." Before he finished his sentence, however, for as his head was returning to proper position he met the grinning face of a very weird old man. Naturally, Inori freaked, leaning back enough in his seat because he couldn't jump as he was already seated.

"How may I help yer, youngling~"

Inori stared, probably his gaping face at that very moment resembled very much akin to a fish. Two hands with skin akin to rough leather clutched to both sides of his cheeks, and a very much shell-shocked Inori could only gape as Shippo the standowner very cheerily declared: "A new face I see~ What would you like to eat, lad?"

Nero probably could see the shiver that ran from Inori's toe to head. In a panic, Inori pointed at one of the pictures on display, and barked in answer: "That!"

His own hands made move to force the old man's hands away from his face. But to no avail - why on earth was the old man's hands so strong? Fortunately, Shippo moved away to admire Nero.

"And a young master from Fubuki I see!"

At this, Inori blinked. How was this...this creepy old man able to tell?

"How about this kids? Since it's your first time here, I will treat~"

Inori looked suspicious at this.

"What for?"

"In return you have to tell me what you think of my special recipes."

Inori's golden eyebrows were in danger of disappearing into their bangs now.

"O...ok...?"

"Now, kids, you'll be served up miso ramen~ I don't think you'll last very well with the others."

Why? Did the ramen have poison?

"Er-..."

But that was all that left his mouth as the old man skipped in, and cheerfully sang out: "Two orders of miso ramen, coming up!"

About ten heartstopping minutes later, Inori found himself staring at a bowl of ramen with a soup that seemed a degree far too red.

"I..." Gulped Inori. "I must..."

He must protest, really because he hated spicy. But the expectant look in the old man's bright eyes was a bit hard to ignore. With a shaking hand reaching for the plastic spoon, he delved into the hot soup, and lifted a miniscule amount of liquid to his lips.

Hatin' on Spicy
Inori really doesn't like spicy food. But what choice does he have, with Nero and him both being very hungry and they already arrived here? Might as well tolerate the food.

Nero grinned widely at the free food. He brought the chopsticks to his mouth and took a big mouthful, swallowing it without much chewing. He loved it. Taking another mouthful, he attempted to speak before swallowing. "Thrhgs Ughhs Drlicshoucs" He said, completely inaudible because of his mouth full of food.

He swallowed it and grinned. "This is delicious!" He said, taking another mouthful. It was a bit hot for his liking, so he swallowed and began to focus intently on the bowl of ramen. The soup part of the dish began to move slightly, back and forth, as if he was blowing on it. He was manipulating the wind to cool it down a bit. It wasn't enough to be a jutsu, or to do anything much, but it certainly helped enough with the ramen factor!

He began to eat it again, eating it more quickly this time, due to the lower temperature making it easier for him to eat. He finished his bowl and put it on the table. "Can I have some more?" He asked, the spiciness beginning to hit him a bit, but not enough to really stop him.

Theme: Gomen Game

The last time his mother made him eat something spicy was when he was small. Like any other misbehaving small boy, he had ignored her order to not eat desserts before the main meal, boycotted water, and a long story made beautifully short got very sick. She had then presented to him spicy-headed chilis in his noodles, and told him it was only there for flavoring. Pretty much, he ate the noodles, and as tears of pain poured down his eyes he could've sworn his heart stopped. Since that fateful day then, Inori had always held a natural aversion to anything remotely spicy. Granted, it was thanks to his mother that the cold stopped, but still. Any child would be duly traumatized.

So how on earth did he get into such a situation? Thought Inori mournfully. He could hear messy noises of slurping beside him, with Nero declaring how delicious the ramen was. He has to eat it, doesn't he. If Nero, who was younger can tolerate it, then...well. He can, too! No time for second thoughts. He drained the liquid on the spoon. For a long moment, time seemed to stop. One second passed. Then another. Finally, one green eye slowly cracked open. His heart was still beating. He, ah, didn't really taste anything? Did he put too little on the spoon?

"It's..."

He didn't want to say "it's ok", fearing such words might jinx the rest of the soup the shopkeeper was expecting him to finish. Cautiously, he removed his chopsticks from their paper wrapper, and broke them apart. They seemed fairly even - good luck it was then? He rubbed them together to rid the possible splinters from breaking the disposable chopsticks apart. Slowly then, he tackled the noodles, mumbling a quick "itadakimasu..." beneath his breath.

"Why sure you can, little fella. And since you took the spicyness so well, here, try this to cool off. It's a bit less spicy, hope ya like it!" The ramen shopkeeper said, presenting Nero with a bowl of ramen bigger than the last. He grinned and put his chopsticks back in his hands, shoveling it into his mouth. He took one mouthful, swallowed, then used the wind to cool it off a bit.

It was pretty warm, a bit less hot, but it was definitely manageable at this point. Nero continued to shovel the food into his mouth, hardly even pausing for air. "At first it's a bit less spicy anyways..." The shopkeeper said with a grin.

Nero could feel the spiciness kicking in, and only ate more of it. He loved it, more than he liked the first bowl even. He looked over at Inari, who was eating it at a moderate pace, and was happy that food was entering his belly, but saw he was uncomfortable. He frowned slightly, than remembered Inori had made him clean up books. He supposed now they had both done something they didn't like, and that they were even. He grinned, and went back to his ramen. "Even better than the first bowl!" He said, cheerfully, as he continued to shovel it into his mouth, as if he hadn't eaten in weeks.

However, he had underestimated the ramen. It grew incredibly spicy, especially at the rate that Nero was eating it. It grew to the point where Nero had to put his chopsticks down and take a huge sip of his drink. Not just a sip...he drank the entire glass of liquid.

He... He didn't think he was feeling his tongue anymore. But how can this be? He only ate the noodles... He didn't even try anymore of the soup. Each tangy drop that dripped onto his tongue made it singe with fairly literal yet quite metaphorical fire. Even when the noodle made its slowly sticky trail down to his stomach with that heavy gulp, he didn't think his stomach really agreed with this kind of a meal. Almost as if in timely concurrence, it voiced its complaint. And Inori? All he could do was bite back the urge to sniff as his eyes rapidly teared up.

It was only a matter of time before his nasal system was affected too. What on earth do they put in these...dishes, to make them so potent? Yet beside him Inori eyed from the corner of his eye as Nero downed his first bowl and began on the second. His eye twitched, where was his Fubuki companion putting the noodles? Or a better question, where was the other storing that dastardly soup.

He squeezed his eyes shut, as leaning his head forward, he readied himself for the second assault. Normally he might grow to be a bit competitive with Nero, but in such a situation it was wiser to retreat. After finishing this one bowl, that is.
