Idk if this was posted, but on the "Drew Carey Show" this lady said to this other lady "You should be living under an opera house wearing half a mask." I squealed "POTO REFERENCE!!!!" and ran around the house. ^_^

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but;
There's a show I used to watch called, "Flying Rhino Junior High." and I didn't realise that it was a Phantom referance until after I saw POTO three times.
Basicaly, the "Bad guy" is a Phantom that wears a mask (more of a Zorro mask than Phantom) who lives in the basement of the Junior High named "Earl" who changes the physical form of reality (If you want to call it that xp ) instead of our favourite phantom Erik.

rofl This is more of my insane mind straining to make connections with everything I do than an actual reference, but...
I was reading Full Moon Wo Sagashite, the first volume of the manga, and the main character, Mitsuki, has a sarcoma in her throat, and she's going to die in a year because she won't go through the surgery required to remove it, because they're remove her vocal chords as well, and she'd rather die than never be able to sing again... (She's 12)
And these two Negiramen, from the Death Pediatric Ward come to tell her she's got a year left to live, and she's supposed to meet someone today that would push that date back, and they're there to make sure that it doesn't happen...
Well, anyway... the guy, Takuto, apparently was a singer during his life, and committed suicide, which is why he's stuck with the job he's got now, and he helps Mitsuki, by using his powers to turn her into a 16 year old temporarily, and taking away her sarcoma while she's in that state, so that she can go through her singing auditions, and she ends up becoming a famous pop-star... >_> Oh, and right now, where I am in the series, at the end of volume 1 (sad. xd ), we don't know anything about Takuto's past other than the fact he committed suicide, and was a singer. Because if he remembers his past, then his soul gets sent back to the living world and he turns into a ghost or something. o_o Which is decidedly bad.
Oh, and there's this other guy I forget the name of whom was Mitsuki's childhood friend that she hasn't seen in forever that she's in love with! xd She wanted to be a singer so that he could hear her singing, because she'd be so famous, and wherever he was, he'd know she loved him and he'd come back to her. They were best friends in the orphanage. BECAUSE MITSUKI'S AN ORPHAN!
I dunno.
I think it's too far-fetched, but I was like... "Singer with amazing voice and clouded, depressed life whom is dead (as Erik was... dead-looking) that apparently falls in love with and teaches young orhpan girl with a (currently absent) child-hood friend/lover to sing whom achieves fame. ... neutral ... PHANTOM! biggrin "

Though I do love the reference in the "ugly" episode of Spongebob, my favorite reference would hae to be the Southpark one.
In the thanksgiving episode of Southpark the kids have to put on a school musical, so Cartman is at home trying to write the opening lyrics to the show when his mom comes in and tells him it's time for bed.
He starts whining and she tells him he can stay up for twenty more minutes. When she leaves he's all:
"grumblegrumble...mmm...twenty minutes...grmm...screw this! Did Tim Rice's mom only give him twenty minutes to write the opening lyrics to Phantom of the Opera!?? I don't think so!!"

Anyways, *FMwS spoiler* the ending is quite different from PotO. That made me really sad... I loved Eichi-kun! gonk *end of spoiler*

I doubt that it is a direct reference but have you ever seen/read Yami no Matsuei (Descendants of Darkness)? Well yeah I won't give you a full run down but there is this dude who lives in the Hall of Candles, and he records human lives, kinda gnifty, and all the candles around so make me think of Erik's lair... anyways, the Count who kinda... rules over this building is invisible and all you can see of him are his gloves and a floating half mask (granted it looks metallic and sharp, it amused me. Oh and his servant Watson looks Eriky too)

It was funny, the first time i saw the series I wasn't into POTO yet. Then last year at a Robotics comp me and a few friends were watching the DVD and I saw the mask and screamed, "HOLY CRAP ITS ERIK!" It was funny 3nodding

I watched this series looooong ago, way before I got into PotO, and I would love to see the references. whee
