"Purugly! Take Golbat's place!" came the order, as the rather homely feline took up position in front of the grunts.

"Dustox! Use Silver Wind on that Espeon!" the first grunt shouted, while the second continued to order the Purugly.

"Use Slash on the same target!"

The Dustox released another burst of silver spores from his wings, as the Purugly leaped at the Espeon, slashing at Hizashi with her claws.

Chloe nodded, "Hey Bray!" she greeted with a grin from atop Daimon. She nodded at his explanation that Kaya would be with them eventually, "Awesome, it'll be good to see him again," she smiled sincerely. Even though it really hadn't been that long since the events at Iron Mountain, it was always nice to be with her friends. She preferred that much over traveling alone. Even with her Pokemon, it was still better to be with a human.

"And nope, no luck yet snagging Julian a Dratini," she shook her head sadly, "The fishing gods don't like us today apparently," she joked with a wink.

"I am kind of eager to get on to Kaya's home, though," she admitted with a slight shrug, "I hope we can get there soon. I'm worried about what's going on there. Especially with Notaro involved now," she murmured.

Chloe was watching her line at the time, muttering to herself every time she saw a shadow flit past her bait without a second glance. She was wondering if she should start hooking up her lunch for bait again, that had seemed to work somewhat in Hoenn.

A muttered curse brought her attention from the water as she glanced Brayden's way. He seemed... preoccupied with something, having a conversation. Realizing that his Gardevoir had telepathy, she put two and two together. The two seemed to always be arguing over something, she smiled.

However, after a moment, she realized that it wasn't one of their normal good-natured squabbles. For one, Brayden looked like he might fall off of Cye, and that was something Chloe had never thought possible. Bray was always an expert at water types, and even though he seemed to have bad luck with landing in trees, she had never seen him have any problems traversing over water. So, she realized, something must really be distracting him in order for him to look so shaken.

She watched the conversation for a moment, not hearing any of it due to half of it was mentally conveyed, and the other half was whispered, save for the slightly panicked "Crap!" she heard from Brayden's side of the exchange.

"Bray?" Chloe inquired gently, motioning to Daimon, who flit over the water slowly to come up beside Cye.

"Are you alright?" she asked, setting a hand gently on Brayden's shoulder.

"Is something wrong?" she inquired, "You look a little shaken up."

Brayden had nodded in response to Chloe's inquiry, although he had jumped a bit at the touch of her hand gently on his shoulder, his thoughts elsewhere when she had approached him, "I'm okay," he assured her with a smile and a nod. In reality, he felt physically fine. His mental state was a bit shaken up, but as far as he knew, there really wasn't a cause for worry. At least for the moment anyway.

'And I'm an Aipom's uncle,' came Ari's mental retort in his mind.

"Ari, just kind of picked up on something a moment ago. I don't think it'll be a problem just now, though," he elaborated to Chloe a moment later.

"It just spooked me a bit, that's all," he smiled brightly, but it didn't really seem all that sincere...

'Is the... uh... link thing, strong enough to cause any trouble?' Brayden asked Ariadne silently.

'Mmm... I'm not sure, boss. Its not very strong at the moment, but I have sort of felt it growing over the past few days. I think... and this is just my guess in this. You guys are traveling closer to the islands. And that apparently is where Notaro is.'

'So the closer I am... I get it,' Brayden nodded mentally, fitting the pieces together. It wasn't that hard to figure out, even for him.

"Just... when we get to the islands, be careful, okay?" he asked Chloe, "Stark Mountain didn't end so well for us, so I'd hate to have a repeat..." it took Bray a moment to admit the next bit, "I think... whatever that lab coat wonder did back to me in the mountain didn't really go away. Back when I went all crazy in the head?" he muttered, "Back when I... attacked Kaya," that was the hardest part to get past his lips...

"I don't think it stopped, whatever it is. I had thought getting rid of that Vulpix DNA would solve it, but... I don't know. I keep hearing and seeing stuff. Makes me wonder, ya know?" he laughed, a hollow sound. But he shook his head.

"Ari says its not really strong now, just a whisper I suppose, like an intermittent radio broadcast or something. But... I worry about what may happen the closer we get to Notaro," he explained, "But for now, I think it should be alright."

'Just keep an eye on it, okay?' he pleaded Ariadne mentally, 'And tell me if it gets any worse.' Ariadne gave her mental agreement as Brayden smiled momentarily, this one seeming more sincere. However, his attentions distracted for a moment as he heard the scream from Julian. He was unaware of the other boy's ability, so when he heard the cry, the first thing to flash though his mind was that the Galactics had done something to the other boy. After all, they didn't tend to follow the rules sometimes when it came to battling, and certainly didn't seem to care about anyone that got in there way.

Brayden had always thought the grunts as weaklings, so he didn't hesitate to allow Julian to continue the fight with them while he fished. He was cursing himself for that decision now.

"Crap... Cye!" he shouted to the Feraligatr, who had already picked up on it, and started towards shore swiftly. Powerful strokes of his whiplike tail drove them to the shallows quickly, as Brayden came up on shore, a hand at his waist, prepared to summon Ariadne to help out in the battle.

The other Pokemon that he had released to play in the water a bit joined Brayden, behind him in the shallows Sai peeked out from behind Brayden's leg, Mac sitting on top of the Vaporeon's back, the two returned to their Pokeballs a moment later, Sai too skittish, and Mac too young to want to stick around if things got ugly. Caliga remained somewhere in the caves, although Brayden could see a flicker of blue light every once in a while, the sight reassuring him that she was well-aware of the situation, and ready to lend a helping hand if the situation required it.

Cye was behind Brayden, raising from all fours to stand a good few heads above his trainer, rumbling out a deep growl of distaste at the grunts. Thankfully, most of his teeth had grown back in from his little incident with Aoi back at the Canalave Pokecenter, so he had a pretty intimidating snarl at the moment.

"What's going on?!" Brayden demanded, for the briefest of moments, his eyes from their normal azurite to ruby, before shifting right back to blue. He also didn't notice it, but there was a very faint glow from the buckler strapped to his back. In response, the waves that lapped against the shore of the underground lake rose just a little farther up than usual, as if reaching for Brayden from behind.

He spotted the blood on Julian's hand a moment later, coming up beside the other boy, "What did they do to you?" he asked, worried. Cye came up behind Brayden, casting a disdainful glance at the Grunts and their Pokemon. The look pretty much said something along the lines of, "If I get the word, I'm going to munch on the whole lot of you..."

Chloe had listened to Brayden's explanation, nodding slightly at parts, but her eyes narrowed a bit as he explained that what happened at Stark Mountain could very well happen again, given the right circumstances. That worried her. She knew that Brayden was a loyal friend, and as such, the thought of him attacking someone he was close too must put a lot of strain on the boy. She wasn't too sure if he could take that pain too many times before it cause a scar too deep to heal.

"I'll be careful," she had assured him with a smile, still keeping a steady hand on Bray's shoulder. She would be there to support him, and help in any way she could.

She just didn't know of any way she could help her friend, though. That was the tricky part...

A moment after Brayden bolted towards the shore to come to Julian's aide, she heard Hizashi's panicked cry, pointing Dai on the same course as Cye. The Kingdra could be quite speedy in the water when he needed to, so it wasn't long after Brayden met the shore that Chloe stepped up onto the gray sand of the underground beach.

As she was standing behind Brayden, she didn't see the subtle shift in his eye color, although she probably would have been more than a little unnerved at it. There was only one man with the eyes of bloodied gems that she had met in her travels. And as such... she really wouldn't have enjoyed seeing Brayden with his eyes.

However, she did see the slight change in the waters on the shore of the lake shift, as Brayden's emotions crept to the shield on his back. It seemed that his control of the water was becoming more acute, even if he didn't realize that he was doing it, she realized it, unable to help a small smile at the accomplishment.

She just hoped he didn't bring down a tidal wave on the whole group of them without realizing.

Chloe came up alongside the others, "Should we help out in this match?" she asked Julian gently, knowing the cause of his pain. She had realized from Brayden's reaction that he was unaware of what was going on.

"It wasn't anything the grunts did," she explained to her friend, "Julian has been able to feel the pain that his Pokemon do during battle," she elaborated.

"Although it takes its toll," she murmured, biting her bottom lip slightly with worry.

Most of Chloe's Pokemon had come to see what the fuss was about as well. Save for Lilie, who was still over by Angel, trying to get the attention of the boy.

She did get the attention of a Wiscash in the water, however. Not really what she had wanted to happen. The fish was a bit upset over all the commotion in his lake, and had come to investigate to find a rather hyper Bayleef along the shore. The fish let out an unhappy grumble, and attacked Lilie, spouting a splash of mud and water at the Bayleef.

Lilie sputtered, whirling to face her attacker. She let out a pleased cry of "Leeeeeef!" before rearing, charging into the water, releasing several seeds from the buds about her neck. The seeds flew through the air, striking the Wiscash, where they sprouted suddenly, wrapping the fish in vines that grew within seconds, each bursting into bloom with a sweet-smelling flower.

That exploded a second later. The blossoms blasted the fish back into the water, defeating the Wiscash, who decided that perhaps he didn't mind the commotion as much as he had originally thought...

The grunts were starting to get a bit worried. After all, their last Pokemon was starting to wear down.

"Purugly! Use Hypnosis on that Ivysaur!" the grunt commanding the feline ordered. As the cat recovered from the series of cuts from the leaves that Rose had pummeled it with, the Purugly meowled. Both grunts watched, hoping that the Purugly would be able to fight through the paralysis in order to attack. They let out a collective sigh of relief when the cat focused for a moment, releasing a rather soothing meow at Rose, a sound that really shouldn't come from such an ugly cat's throat, lulling the Ivysaur to sleep.

((I think sleep is roll a 6-sided, 5 makes it awaken, any other number remains asleep. I think its 2 rolls for two chances at awakening, and after that the Pokemon remains asleep for 2 more turns. 4 total. Izzat right, Astral?))

Brayden nodded to Chloe's explanation. He had met several people with different abilities in his travels, so Julian's didn't shock him as much as it would have a couple of months ago. But still, he couldn't help a slight frown at the other boy's situation.

"Think nothing of it," Brayden offered sincerely at Julian's apology, helping the boy to right himself after his stumble. He couldn't imagine the pain the other boy must be going through. Bray himself had only encountered an attack from a Pokemon on a handful of occasions. Just one of them had made him vow never to own an Electivire (or ever get near one again).

"You're sure you don't need any help?" he asked, pretty sure he knew what Julian's answer would be, but asking it all the same. Even if it was just a steady hand to help the boy, he wouldn't hesitate.

Cye had backed off a few paces, still growling at the grunts slightly, although he didn't seem like he would charge at them. Once he had determined that he wouldn't likely be needed to step in, the Feraligatr had backed down. He still didn't like the situation, though. Even though his loyalties lay with Brayden, one of his friends being in trouble was enough to get him miffed.

Brayden didn't step back, although he allowed Julian to continue the match. He was there if the other boy needed him, however. Thankfully whatever it was that had come over him the few moments before had subsided. His eyes were back to normal and, although the water of the lake still rose in laps a little higher than normal, the faint blue glow of the buckler had vanished.
