I can't tap my feet. It puts me off. I don't think we're allowed to but we have a conductor, you don't need to. You can see the tempo while reading your music so it's much easier and it keeps everyone to the same speed. Our conducter will change the tempo each time we play a piece and they often have a couple of different tempos in the same peice so it makes foot tapping pretty impossible.

I can't help but tap my feet. i get really inot the musi9c and don't even realsie i am doing it but then i see and have to stop myself but when i stop thinking about it my foot starts tapping of it s own acord. I don't tap my foot to keep in time. i even tap my foot when i am listening not playing at all. it has a life of its own.

Well, I can keep tempo without tapping my foot but I like to do it anyway. It helps. ^ ^

I used to think that tapping your foot was for losers, but that was when I was head Alto Sax. Now lol I don't think so, mainly because now that I'm in High School there's a wider range of players and I'm not the best. Lol plus the girl ahead of me got me into the habit again. Plus it's fun to do during an intence part of the music.

though yeah I can keep tempo just fine, wheather I can get the right rythem of the notes..thats anouther story..XD sweatdrop

Meh. My opinion on tapping your foot varies. I have noticed that the ones who suck in band need to tap their foot. It gets quite annoying. My friend who is the teacher for the middle school band...I went to one of their concerts, and noticed that almost ALL of them tapped their foot. It looked really unprofessional and not to mention, completely silly.

I've also noticed that the ones who are proficient at their instrument need not to tap their feet. People should know how to count with an internal beat. Or else the other experienced will take notice. wink

Okay, this has been bothering me for three years...since 6th grade when I joined the middle school band. I'm not saying I downright hate my band director or anything, but I can't possibly keep tempo without having to tap my foot. And he's told me so many times to stop (but I still havn't) and he says that tapping your foot is for babies, which was quite insulting to me, actually. My dad's a big music teacher (He was Rhode Island Teacher of the Year) and he taps his foot, which basically means that Mr. Fortier was calling him a baby. The funny thing is, he looks up to my dad yet he's calling him a baby. sweatdrop

Anyway, do you think tapping your foot is at all bad?

Real people tap their feet, other wise the person is a moron.

I object to this. stare It's the person's own choice. And if you can't play music without tapping your foot, it means you are mentally unstable. Seriously.

Our directors don't like it when you do that, they tell you to do it inside of your shoe so it isn't visible. I heard that using your heel is actually better because you're more able to feel the beats rather than just using your toe.

I normally don't when I'm in class, but I do when I practice at home.

in honor band this year I learned that tapping your fot is an unconcious thing that you do to stay at a designated tempo, whether it is your director's tempo or not, and then he had us clap our hands at a quarter note tempo like your feet would...and not one clap was together XD

but yet, I still tap my foot, I don't even notice I'm doing it, cuz I don't pay attention...

but yah, in a sense its ok, but not all the time

If i dont tap my foot id go crazy and screw up. Tapping the foot is important because it helps you stay on que espcially when you are waiting up to 15 measures...(damn you baritone) I couldnt not tap my foot sometimes i dont even realize im doing it

Nope, Tapping your foot makes you look more professional! domokun I do it If I'm not Standing up

Psh....i do it all the time....it helps me, since I can concentrate on the notes, and just see my foot (or hear, or feel?!?). Our director doesn't care, as long as we're not like, stomping our feet or anything..=]

they discourage it in concert band, but strongly incourage it in marching and jazz bands. oh, and swaying's good in orchestra?
it's weird when you are in all those in one day too.

My band director LIKES it when we tap our feet. In fact, he ENCOURAGES it! 3nodding

Well, our band directors always told us to tap our feet in fifth grade, but now they dun want us to. O_o Either that or we have to tap "inside our shoe".
