I finished #5 last night/early this morning.
Luna needs more page time, in my opinion.
And seriously, Neville should be the one with the power to destroy Voldy, not stinky old Potter (who has a large ego problem that still hasn't been deflated!).

its ok, just read this after restin a bit 4laugh

...ego problem? all he wants to do is help people. everyone's just hatin on him cuz he's got skillz.

and had neville been chosen by he-who-must-not-be-named, his parents woulda been killed off, not tortured insane.. then he'd still have been raised by his crazy ole gramma n still have been a sub-par wizard, dark powers or no dark powers.

this applies to all movies: he does have a bit of an ego problem, but so do most boys his age voldy is a half blood, which is why he saw harry as the bigger threat, he knew harry would have to have that struggle with the whole being an outcast by slitheran standards 'cause he's not pure. Fight to be as good as he was is what made him a better wizard because he was trying to compensate for his lack of purity, he most likely figured that same passion would go into harry's life and encourage him to try to seek the same level of success

Hmmm... I'm "hating on him" because he can't keep his temper or his need to be a hero in check. I don't care how powerful someone is - if they can't keep it under control, they don't deserve it. It'd be nice to see some character development out of Potter, but instead he stays the same while everyone around him changes. He has not changed one bit - he's still surly, hot headed, and self-righteous. Potter doesn't think about anyone else one bit - he never considers his friends first, it's always about him and he never learns any different. I was hoping that by the fifth year he'd have matured, but he hasn't.
You'd think he'd even give Snape some slack, seeing how he's found out just what a prig his father was. But, no.... it's still all about him! In a way, I'm hoping that Potter succumbs to Voldy and has to be brought down by his friends, whom he treats with such disrespect. I haven't seen him really want to help anyone, except the twins. Sure, he thinks about his attitude and his friends, but his self-love always wins out in the end and he goes off and gets into trouble. It's true he caused the major events in #5 by being a stubborn headed pain in the tush - just because he didn't like Snape and because he was curious. He should have at least tried to learn Occlumency, but instead he wanted that connection with Voldy, without thinking of the consequences. He overlooked important ideas just because he couldn't get over his dislike of Snape.
--------------
Either way, Neville's parents are as good as dead - he's suffered their loss. Besides, Neville's becoming stronger and had he been marked, he would have been like Potter anyway - seeing how the marked one was basically given power by moldy Voldy. Oh, and Neville's become stronger, both in character and ability - he's actually learning and maturing, unlike Potter.

honestly, he's 15. i dont know about you, but when i was 15, a large part of my world revolved around me (that and my dying grandfather, but thats a whole different story), and i think he has matured somewhat.

being such a public figure would go to anyone's head, but really, i think some of what went on could easily have been avoided with some truth. granted it's a lot for a kid his age, but if dumbledor had been a little more open with harry it really could have spared some tragety

i found 5 really hard to read, because he was being a whiny b***h, but none of us can say that we wouldnt have been equally as irritating in his position and know for sure that we could be more mature than he was

I guess I see it as Potter can see himself as a whiny little b***h, but he doesn't make an effort to change it - he recognizes his faults without recognizing that he needs to make an effort to change. Also, I suppose I expect too much out of today's 15 year olds. Then again, Hermione and Ron are better examples for Potter than anyone else and they're 15 as well!

And I agree about Dumbeldore - why didn't he ask someone else to tell Potter the truth, since he was so afraid to do so for fear of Voldy possessing Potter? Potter would have listened to Sirius! Then again, Sirius was pretty much a bad rolemodel for such a brash young man. Well, to me, the whole prophecy was apparant from the first book, anyway, so I tend to think Potter was a bit thick for not realizing the whole connection between things. I mean, #5 didn't hold a single surprise for me (even though I enjoyed most of it... you know, the bits where Potter wasn't acting like a git).

yea its true that harry dint try his best to learn occlumency.. but then again, snape dint do his best to teach the boy did he? he just used it as another chance to bully him.

i mean cmon, yu-utsu hit it rite on the nose. nothing terrible woulda happened had dumbledork been honest with all parties involved in this struggle. he said it himself, that it was he who shoulda taught the lessons. despite the fact that he trusts snape with his life, he knew that harry dint share that trust, and he knew that snape hasnt been able to put aside his hatred for any potter. in my opinion, tis mostly the headmaster's fault.

ok we know that his occlumency lessons dint really treat him well.. now what else happened during the year thatd help harry keep a cool head? a summer with the dursleys sans any notable contact from his peers & mentors regardless of what transpired in the last book, the dementor attack, hagrid's giant problems, the trial, umbridge's reign of terror, no quidditch, the azkaban breakout, crazyass cho.... i think these things combined, without the almighty dumbledore's guidance mind u, would stress anyone out to the point of pressing the panic button once trouble hit.

i mean, he saved a loved one's life with one of his psychic dreams, y not a second when it happened again? i agree that he acted rashly, but by the time it happened, he had nobody around him to help really. at least he still had the gumption to actually act.

also, with all this happening, dont forget about wiley old voldemort, whos the master stringpuller in all these machinations. better wizards than harry had been fooled by him.. its not all harry's fault.

so please stk, put aside ur hatred of our poor protagonist. try n see things from his perspective. give him a chance. cmon, just try calling him by his first name... harry. see? he's not so bad a person. lets try n help him out instead of crucifying him instantly arite? cuz im sure that he's gonna b seein some rough times soon...

I don't dislike Potter in Whole per se, more like I really dislike JK Rowling for refusing to let him grow as a person. He's still that young boy who first started at Hogwarts - he hasn't matured in any way. Rowling lets the other characters exhibit some growth (admittedly, not much), but poor Potter isn't allowed the luxury. He should be learning something, but I don't see it. Rowling throws all sorts of problems at Potter, but doesn't let him get anything out of it. I want Growth! I mean - he's already seen tough times! I could stand his stagnancy for the first several books, but by his fifth year he's still the same? I can't find any growth at all and it frustrates me.

you know, in hind sight, all of that s**t might have been her way of making him grow. granted he was a whiny b***h in 5, but he learned some really painful, but prolly greatly needed lessons in 5. if i read 6 and he's no different i'd be pissed, but lets face it, he could have handled 5 better, but people were treating him like s**t, and i think he really did start to grow up once he started dumbledor's army.

by 6, he will have to take a more adult stance on what's going on, and if he doesnt jk should stick where her name implies, cause she'll lose her whole adult audience
