Sasuke Retrieval Arc
Naruto's influence on Sasuke, though profound, is powerless to prevent Sasuke from deciding to become a missing-nin and leaving Konohagakure to receive training from Orochimaru. Sasuke's decision to leave is the result of a chain of events that rekindles his hatred for his brother and desire to avenge his clan. To do so, he must claim a great amount of power that becomes the center of his entire life.
Humiliated by Itachi's declaration that he is disappointingly "weak" and aware of the fact that Naruto may be his superior, Sasuke challenges Naruto to a fight when Naruto returns to Konoha. They engage in a heated duel on the rooftop of the hospital, where Naruto tells Sasuke that he never considered himself inferior to Sasuke. Kakashi leaps in to stop the fight just when Naruto and Sasuke are about to use their Rasengan and Chidori on each other, deflecting both their attacks into adjacent water towers. While Sasuke's Chidori makes a larger dent on the front of the tower than Naruto's Rasengan, Sasuke is shocked to find that the back of Naruto's water tank has been completely blown out by the power of Rasengan. Sasuke realizes he would have lost the fight and received major injuries if Kakashi hadn't stopped the fight. This only makes Sasuke even angrier that Naruto is getting stronger by the day and could actually be able to defeat him in battle.
Ever since the Chunin exam and the fight against Gaara of the Sand, Sasuke felt that Naruto had been improving immensely. Naruto only wanted recognition from Sasuke, recognition that he really had gotten stronger. However, Sasuke would never recognize Naruto, because by doing so, he would also have to admit that he is weaker than him. Despite a lecture from Kakashi about the pointlessness of revenge, the appearance of Orochimaru's Sound Four with an offer of greater powers and yet another humiliating pummeling took Sasuke over the edge.
Choji vs. Jirobo
A five-man squad is set up by Shikamaru, including himself, Kiba, Naruto, Choji, and Neji. They easily catch up to the Sound Four, who are escorting Sasuke to Orochimaru. Strategies are not used; rather, the team splits up. The same was on the part of the Sound Four: they dropped people one by one, and Choji ends up fighting Jirobo by himself. Using two of the secret pills of the Akimichi Clan, Choji is able to increase his chakra enough to keep from being defeated. In the end, he has to consume the red pepper pill which increases his chakra a hundredfold but leaves him in an extremely critical condition afterwards. Taking the pill slims down his body as the excess calories were converted into butterfly wings of chakra. After getting back at Jirobo for eating the last chip and calling him fat, Choji puts all his chakra and power into his fist and kills Jirobo for insulting his best friend, Shikamaru.
Neji vs. Kidomaru
Next, Neji ends up fighting Kidomaru. Kidomaru has trouble at short range since Neji's Byakugan and Juken are too powerful to penetrate. Kidomaru ends up fighting from long-range, but the battle is locked in a stalemate until Kidomaru discovers a weakness of the Byakugan: it has a blind spot behind Neji's first thoracic vertebrae. Knowing that he will be hit in this area, Neji intentionally allows Kidomaru hit him with a powerful arrow, to which Kidomaru had affixed a chakra string to ensure accuracy. However, Neji uses the chakra string to use his Juken to damage Kidoumaru's internal organs. Neji then catches up with Kidomaru, and uses Juken to close Kidomaru's tenketsu; Kidomaru dies shortly after. Neji is left in a critical state after the fight.
The Sand Arrives
Shikamaru is matched up with Tayuya, while Kiba and Akamaru are with Sakon and Ukon. Kiba and Akamaru are the underdogs from the get go, with the Level 2 seal being too powerful. Shikamaru, despite all his prowess at strategy, simply cannot kill Tayuya because of her sheer force. Finally, Shikamaru and Kiba are ready to accept their deaths. However, before the finishing strike can be executed, the Sand ninja arrive to help.
They are aided by Temari and Kankuro respectively, who have been ordered to help the Konoha ninja. Kankuro's puppets are unaffected by Sakon and Ukon's ability to fuse with cells, and Kankuro simply traps Sakon and Ukon inside his puppet Kuroari. Kankuro then uses Karasu to stab them through holes in Kuroari, killing the brothers. Since Tayuya uses sound, Temari's wind was a natural enemy. Temari is able to kill Tayuya by destroying an entire tract of the forest, the sliced debris falling atop her and crushing her.
Naruto/Lee/Gaara vs. Kimimaro
Last, Kimimaro, who is stronger than all four of the Sound Four combined, comes to aid the escort mission. At first, he is faced with Naruto, but even Naruto's massive amounts of shadow clones prove to be no match for Kimimaro, whose taijutsu skills are more than a match for Naruto's superior numbers. Rock Lee then comes to help Naruto, allowing Naruto to chase after Sasuke while Lee fights Kimimaro.
Both Lee and Kimimaro are taijutsu experts, but since Lee recently recovered from his surgery, he is not in top shape. Lee drinks some sake that he thought was medicine and becomes intoxicated, and fights with the Drunken Fist style. With this added unpredictability, Lee gains an upper hand against Kimimaro. But Kimimaro uses his Cursed Seal Level One and overpowers Lee, manifesting his horrific ability to use his bones at will. Lee would have been killed had Gaara not arrived in time and used his sand to protect Lee.
Clearly, Kimimaro is at a disadvantage, since Gaara can block all physical attacks and Kimimaro can only use physical attacks. However, like the Sound Four, Kimimaro is able to get past Gaara's defense and offense by sheer force. Kimimaro's bones are so tough that they simply force their way through Gaara's sand. Even Desert Funeral and other crushing forces can't bring down Kimimaro, as he creates a film of bone beneath his skin to protect himself. Kimimaro would have defeated and killed Gaara with his last attack, but just before Kimimaro could finish Gaara, his terminal illness ended his life.
Naruto vs. Sasuke
Naruto finally catches up with Sasuke. Naruto tries to convince Sasuke that it isn't too late to turn back and not to forget the experiences they had as Team 7. However, Sasuke is unaffected, going full out against Naruto while saying that he isn't leaving because everything they did as Team 7 was meaningless; he intends to kill Naruto because he is his best friend- which would be the way to attain the Mangekyo Sharingan. Naruto, however, doesn't know what Sasuke means and is deeply upset by Sasuke's words. Sasuke has a flashback to his life as a child, revealing the reason he must go to Orochimaru is to fulfill his life's purpose of revenge; in the scene, he is crying as his older brother, whom he thought he once knew and shared many memories with, stands over the bodies of his parents with a bloodied ANBU katana. What makes it worse is that Itachi then proceeds to torture the broken and sobbing Sasuke with the Mangekyo Sharingan by showing Sasuke his parents' deaths at the hand of the person he used to look up to. This is what ultimately makes Sasuke betray Konoha in search of power.
Understanding that Sasuke will never return on his own, Naruto vows to bring Sasuke back by force, even if he must break every one of Sasuke's bones. The two of them keep raising the bar, with Sasuke leveling his Sharingan to three tomoe, Naruto turning into a one-tailed state, and finally, Sasuke powering his Cursed Seal of Heaven to level 2. A demon fox-powered Naruto and Level-2 Cursed Seal Sasuke face off in a final clash, Chidori vs. Rasengan. The two attacks explode and bathe the two in a blinding white light. For a brief moment, their hands touch, and a scene of Sasuke and Naruto smiling at each other as children is shown. Before both are knocked out, Naruto puts a scratch on Sasuke's protector (refuting Sasuke's boast that Naruto wasn't powerful enough to even scratch his forehead) at the same time Sasuke hits him. Naruto is slightly wounded and unconscious while Sasuke is left in critical condition by his cursed seal. Making it to his feet first, Sasuke is tempted to kill the helpless Naruto - his best friend - and thereby obtain the Mangekyo Sharingan. Sasuke, however, realizes that this is exactly what Itachi wants, and refuses to play by his rules. Sasuke vows to become stronger than Itachi his own way: through Orochimaru's powers.
This experience is traumatic to Naruto, not only because he has promised Sakura to bring Sasuke back, but also because it's the first time he is unable to live up to a promise he made to an important person. Unlike Jiraiya, however, who from his own experience with Orochimaru believes that Sasuke is out of reach so Naruto should forget about him and concentrate on his own survival, Naruto believes that there is still hope for Sasuke. He tells Sakura that he will, one day, bring Sasuke back to the village and live up to his promise. Sakura then nods, and says determinedly that next time, they'll bring Sasuke back together.

Plot of Naruto: Shippuden
The plot of the second part of the manga and anime series Naruto, titled Naruto: Shippūden (疾風伝, Shippūden? lit. Hurricane Chronicles) in the anime and simply Part II in the manga, is set two and a half years later after the present timeline in Part I, and revolves mainly around Naruto Uzumaki's and Sakura Haruno's new adventures and their search for Sasuke Uchiha after he left Konoha to gain Orochimaru's power. The plot also shows a more active Akatsuki in their quest for obtaining all the tailed beasts. It is confirmed that it will air in Japan on February 15, 2007, in a one hour special.

Prelude
After his failed attempt to retrieve Sasuke, Naruto learns that circumstances have granted him slightly less than three years to prepare for a confrontation with Orochimaru, who has to wait that much time before he can transfer into Sasuke's body. Naruto also must prepare for his eventual confrontation with Akatsuki, who are after the nine-tailed demon fox sealed within him. To prepare, Naruto leaves the village and undergoes intensive training under Jiraiya. At the same time, Sakura becomes Tsunade's apprentice, and Sasuke trains under Orochimaru. Thus, all three members of the original Team 7 are now training under one of the Legendary Sannin.
When Naruto returns to the village two and a half years later, he is reacquainted with his friends, who have all been training and growing as he has. When Naruto first got back to Konoha he found something changed as he looked at the mountain and saw Tsunade's face next to the 4th Hokage's. Where Naruto was once the shortest among his friends, he is now taller than most of them. He also finds out, much to his dismay, that he is the only one who has not progressed in rank over the timeskip. Most of his comrades have since become Chunin, and a few have become Jonin. Gaara even became the Fifth Kazekage after the death of his father, the Fourth Kazekage. After the reintroduction, Jiraiya leaves Naruto with Kakashi Hatake. Team 7 is reformed as a three-man squad with Naruto and Sakura and they commemorate this by having another bell test. Unlike the first bell test, the point of this one is to actually get the bells. Using their new skills and Kakashi's obsession with the Icha Icha novels, Naruto and Sakura take the bells from Kakashi.

Rescue Gaara arc
Naruto is given little time to reminisce, however. In Sunagakure, the Akatsuki team of Deidara and Sasori attempt to kidnap Gaara. Despite his improved ability, Gaara's newfound desire to defend Sunagakure proves to be his downfall when Deidara threatens to destroy the village with his Explosive Clay. Kankuro then attempts to stop the Akatsuki members, but his puppets are easily fought off and destroyed by Sasori - revealed to be the maker of Kankuro's puppets. Sasori also poisons Kankuro in the process, leaving him to die within the next three days. The Akatsuki duo take Gaara back to their lair, where their leader summons a massive statue to extract and seal in Gaara's demon. The sealing ritual takes three days.
Upon hearing of Gaara's kidnapping, Team 7 leaves for Sunagakure with Temari, who is in Konoha to help with the most recent Chunin Exam, as she is now a Jonin, and a liaison from Suna. On the way, Naruto tells Sakura and Temari that he is the host of the nine-tailed demon fox and that Akatsuki is after the demon inside Gaara. This gives Sakura some insight into what Naruto has gone through. After learning this information, she vows to do everything she can to protect Naruto from being a victim of Akatsuki. Temari is thankful that there is someone who can understand what her brother has gone through, and she's grateful to Naruto for changing her brother and attempting to save him.
At Sunagakure
After arriving at Sunagakure, Team 7 learns of the attack on Kankuro. Before they can help, they are attacked by Chiyo, Sunagakure's resident poison specialist, who mistakes Kakashi for his father, Sakumo Hatake. Despite the failed attempt by the medics on-hand, Sakura cures Kankuro, thus demonstrating her skill with medical jutsu. Sakura is also able to develop several portable antidotes rather quickly. Using a piece of Sasori's clothing found on one of Kankuro's destroyed puppets, Team 7 is able to track him, thus leading them to Gaara. Temari offers to assist them, but Chiyo goes in her place since Chiyo is Sasori's grandmother, and Temari is left to guard Sunagakure's borders. Back in Konoha, Tsunade decides to send Team Guy as backup for Team 7.
As they approach Akatsuki's hideout, Team Kakashi is confronted by Itachi Uchiha while Team Guy fights Kisame Hoshigaki. Itachi catches Naruto in a genjutsu by merely pointing a finger. The genjutsu manifests as a vision of Sasuke, Sakura, Kakashi, and Gaara emerging from Naruto's body and taunting him, playing on his insecurities. Naruto tries to dispel the genjutsu by stopping his chakra flow (something he learned from Jiraiya) but fails. As Naruto breaks down in tears during this emotional assault, Sakura and Chiyo break him out of the genjutsu. Kakashi creates an opening for Naruto to use his Spiraling Sphere, or Great Ball Spiraling Sphere, to take out both Itachi and Kakashi's clone. However, Chiyo recognizes Itachi's body to actually be of Yura, a member of Suna's advisory council. He is revealed to be a double agent under Akatsuki's employ. A similar person is found by Team Guy after they defeat Kisame. Apparently, these two were used as body substitutes for the Akatsuki leader's Shapeshifting Technique.
The group surmises that this was just a delaying tactic to buy Akatsuki enough time to draw the Shukaku out of Gaara. Chiyo tells the group that if Shukaku is fully extracted from Gaara, he will die. Sakura cries, realizing that the same is true for Naruto. However, Naruto misunderstands and tells her not to worry because he'll save Gaara.
At the grotto where Gaara is being held, the group figures out that a barrier jutsu has sealed off the entrance. Team Guy decides to remove the four seals protecting the cave, while Team Kakashi deals with Akatsuki. However, removing the seals triggers another delaying trap, causing Team Guy to confront clones of themselves. Inside the cave, Naruto and Kakashi find Deidara and Sasori guarding Gaara's lifeless body. While Chiyo and Sakura face Sasori, Deidara flies off on a clay bird with Gaara's body, with Naruto and Kakashi in pursuit.
Fighting Sasori
Though Sasori "wears" his puppets and controls them from inside, thus eliminating the puppeteer's weakness of being a separate and exposed target, this proves to be futile against Sakura and Chiyo. Chiyo, controlling Sakura like a puppet, is able to get Sakura close enough to demolish the puppet with one punch using her inhuman strength.
With his puppet armor destroyed, Sasori is revealed, looking just as young as he did when he left the village. He summons another puppet to continue the battle: the Third Kazekage. It is here that Sasori reveals that he not only killed the Third Kazekage, but actually made his body into a puppet. Likewise, he has done the same to 297 other people, giving him a collection of 298. He plans to do the same to Chiyo and Sakura after winning. With its unique Iron Sand ability mixed with Sasori's poison, this puppet is exceptionally dangerous. Chiyo summons two more puppets to fight against it. These puppets are Sasori's parents, which he had turned into puppets and left with the village when he deserted it. At first, Sasori's Kazekage puppet proves to be more than a match for both Sakura and Chiyo, using its poisoned Iron Sand to disable both of them. However, the antidotes Sakura had developed earlier allow them to continue fighting. Having been trained by Tsunade to pick up the enemy's patterns in order to avoid their attacks, Sakura is able to easily dodge Sasori's subsequent attacks and demolish the Kazekage puppet, as well.
Down another puppet, Sasori reveals the secret of his youth: he made himself into a puppet. In this form, he has numerous weapons to fight with, and can even reassemble himself when destroyed, making him almost impossible to defeat. The only part of him that remains alive, and thus able to use chakra, is his heart. His heart is contained in a talisman labeled 蠍 (Sasori, "Scorpion"), which sits in his right chest. In response, Chiyo uses White Secret Technique: Ten Puppet Collection of Chikamatsu to summon Monzaemon Chikamatsu's ten masterpiece puppets, which can take down an entire castle in the right hands. To mock the puppets, Sasori uses his Red Secret Technique: Performance of a Hundred Puppets to summon 100 of his human puppets which he states allowed him to once take down an entire country.
After a spectacular battle between the two puppet groups, Chiyo throws a chakra-sealing orb to Sakura to use on Sasori. Though it appears successful at first, Sasori manages to abandon his body beforehand and take over a spare among the many puppets he had summoned earlier. Using the momentary distraction, Sasori stabs Sakura with a poisoned sword. What he doesn't realize, however, is that he is also in a trap. Having used four of her puppets to make a seal on the ground, Sasori is immobilized since he needs to use chakra to animate his puppet body. Chiyo then uses Sasori's mother and father puppets to stab him through this location in a manner similar to the hug that he desired as a child. Interestingly, Chiyo seems to believe that in the end, Sasori allowed himself to be killed - he saw the attack coming and chose not to react, and died in a way similar to how his parent puppets used to embrace him. At the end of the battle, Chiyo, Sasori, and Sakura are all fatally wounded, but Chiyo uses a jutsu she originally developed for Sasori, "to give life to a lifeless puppet," to save Sakura's life. The jutsu supposedly takes the user's life, but does not kill Chiyo (since Sakura was still alive). Sasori's last words (as a reward to Sakura for defeating him) are that he has a spy in Orochimaru's ranks, with whom he is supposed to meet in Kusagakure in ten days.
Fighting Deidara
Meanwhile, Naruto and Kakashi chase after Deidara. Kakashi activates his own version of the Mangekyo Sharingan during the battle, using it to remove Deidara's remaining arm, and Naruto manages to destroy the clay bird using his Spiraling Sphere. Naruto's shadow clones catch the head and find a dead Gaara inside. Enraged, Naruto sends a demon-fox-powered clone to attack Deidara, who attempts to get away since he no longer has any arms to perform jutsu with. The clone then performs another Shadow Clone Technique, forming four more shadow clones to further pummel Deidara, slamming him into the ground, beating him, and finishing him off with another Spiraling Sphere. However, this Deidara turns out to be a clay clone. Still enraged, Naruto starts to appear feral as two tails of chakra begin to form, causing his demon-fox-powered clones to experience a burning sensation in their stomachs. Kakashi recognizes this as a bad sign and uses a special seal he received from Jiraiya to stop the transformation from proceeding any further. Naruto subsequently reverts back to his normal form.
As the rest of Team Kakashi and Guy catch up with Naruto and Kakashi, Neji spots Deidara attempting to escape. Deidara, narrowly avoiding Tenten's projectiles, moves to the remains of his bird and swallows some of the clay, creating a Suicide Bombing Clone. Neji realizes the nature of the clone and quickly directs the group to leave, fearing that not everyone will get away in time. But as the dust settles, Kakashi collapses from exhaustion, explaining that he used his Mangekyo Sharingan to send the clone to another dimension. With Naruto carrying Gaara's body, the two teams head back to Suna.
Epilogue
Stopping in a grassy field near the village, Sakura checks on Gaara and pronounces him dead. Naruto grows very upset, lashing out verbally at Chiyo. As he begins to cry, Chiyo moves towards Gaara and tries to use her resurrection technique, but doesn't have enough chakra. Naruto gladly lends his own chakra, and Chiyo is able to revive Gaara at the cost of her own life, as the shinobi of Suna look on.
Back at the battleground, Deidara emerges from the ground, revealing his clone to be a diversion for him to escape. He goes off looking for the right arm that he lost. After finding it, he encounters Zetsu and Tobi, a mysterious individual who wishes to take Sasori's place in Akatsuki. After a short banter about his condition, Deidara attempts to strangle Tobi with his feet.
After paying their respects to Chiyo's grave and bidding Gaara and his siblings farewell, Naruto returns to Konoha after this mission, along with his comrades. Unfortunately, Kakashi is still exhausted from his overuse of his Mangekyo Sharingan and has to be carried back by Guy. Guy does so piggyback style, disturbing everyone present.

Exposition
When they arrive at Konoha, Kakashi is confined to the hospital and is unable to lead Naruto and Sakura until he recovers from his injuries. Naruto searches his village to find a possible replacement. During this time, he meets Shino, Kiba, Hinata, Choji, and Ino again. He is also introduced to Sai, who is sent by Danzo to replace Sasuke. Sai is a member of the now-defunct independent subdivision of ANBU called Root.
It is also discovered that some of the village elders are worried about the possibility of Naruto being captured by Akatsuki. Tsunade convinces them to let him go by assigning Yamato, an ANBU captain, as the temporary leader of Team Kakashi. They are to travel to the World Bridge in Kusagakure to meet Sasori's spy.

The Sasuke and Sai arc
Encounter with Orochimaru
Team Kakashi takes on their new mission, and a great amount of tension begins to build in the team, especially between Naruto and Sai. Naruto dislikes Sai, since their interactions are similar to those between Naruto and Sasuke in the beginning of the series. Making matters worse, Sai nonchalantly mentions Sasuke's treachery, greatly irritating both of his teammates to the point that Sakura punches him in the face.
When they arrive at the World Bridge, Yamato goes to meet the spy inside a replica of Sasori's puppet, Hiruko, which Sasori had casually worn. The spy is revealed to be Kabuto Yakushi, but the jutsu binding him to Sasori had been dispelled long ago. He is apparently still loyal to Orochimaru. Orochimaru then shows up and destroys the puppet replica, revealing Yamato inside. Yamato uses a wood clone to escape harm, revealing his true origins to Orochimaru. Orochimaru reveals that he had performed experiments on Yamato and 59 other children, giving them the First Hokage's DNA in an attempt to replicate his Mokuton kekkei genkai. Yamato was the only survivor. Orochimaru then calls out the rest of Yamato's team. Once they emerge, Orochimaru taunts Naruto by speculating whom is now stronger: Naruto or Sasuke. Naruto is so provoked by the mere mention of Sasuke's name that he instantly transforms into a three-tailed demon-fox. Orochimaru continues to taunt Naruto by saying Sasuke belongs to him, causing Naruto to grow a fourth tail.
It is revealed that, during the time skip, Jiraiya apparently saw Naruto trigger a four-tailed state, which nearly resulted in Jiraiya's death. With three tails, Naruto was still able to retain his own identity, but after gaining a fourth tail, Naruto no longer distinguishes friend from foe, and the demon fox takes over. The demon fox's chakra becomes so intense that it burns Naruto's skin, causing him to bleed from every pore. This blood and chakra envelopes him in a fiery shield. In addition to the constant damage, the demon fox's chakra also regenerates Naruto's damaged tissue. This repeated cycle of damage and repair severely weakens Naruto's cellular structure, shortening his overall lifespan in a manner similar to Tsunade's Creation Rebirth Jutsu.
In his four-tailed state, Naruto is able to hold his own against Orochimaru, even withstanding the latter's over-extended Kusanagi sword. After Orochimaru retreats due to a lack of energy, Naruto is still unable distinguish friend from foe and cuts Sakura's arm when she moves close to try to calm him down. Kabuto, seeing Sakura as another opposing force to Akatsuki, willingly heals her arm. Yamato finally gets close enough to use Hokage-Style Sixty-year-old Technique: Enclosed Hermitage Return to Society, a demon-controlling technique, to revert Naruto back to human form.
With Naruto's transformation reversed, Sakura and Yamato rush to his side. Sakura uses her medical skills to heal Naruto's severe injuries, but is still suffering from the injury Naruto had given her earlier. She asks Yamato if he can teach her the technique used to control Naruto, but Yamato explains that the technique is derived from the First Hokage's genes and thus unique to him. Though Sakura is upset at how little she can do, Yamato states that it is the strength of her feelings for Naruto that matters most. Before he can expand on his point, Naruto awakens.
Meanwhile, Sai meets with Orochimaru, saying that he is a messenger from Danzo. After gaining favor with Orochimaru and Kabuto, the three leave to a secret hideout. Yamato watches the encounter, and the team decides to pursue Sai. During their pursuit, they find Sai's body hung from a tree. The body is in fact a fake made by Kabuto using a similarly-aged corpse, which Yamato is able to discern thanks to his ANBU training.
When Naruto realizes that the bridge and a large part of the forest has been leveled, he wonders what happened. Apparently, he does not remember anything while in the four-tailed state. Sakura lies to Naruto about what happened as well as her injury, saying Orochimaru did it, but Yamato calls Naruto aside and explains the truth. He also states that relying on the demon fox's strength, despite enabling Naruto to save Sasuke faster, will ultimately harm Naruto in the long run. Yamato tells Naruto that he is going to seal his demon-fox chakra, but that Naruto will still help all of his friends, because his own chakra is his true strength. Naruto quickly agrees.
While Yamato and Naruto are discussing this, Sakura goes through Sai's belongings and finds his art book. She calls attention to this book and shows it to the rest of the team. The sketchbook contains drawings of Sai and what the team assumes is his older brother growing up and going through a gauntlet of enemies. On each subsequent page, Sai takes the weapons and armor of his previous opponent. The center pages, where the two brothers are supposed to meet, are unfinished. The left page is completely empty, and the right page has an image of Sai in full ANBU attire without a face.
At Orochimaru's hideout, Yamato reveals that he was able to track Sai through a special plant seed hidden in his breakfast, which reacts to chakra usage. He gives Sakura and Naruto similar seeds to make sure they can find each other if lost. Yamato breaks open an entrance for the team. Once inside, Yamato leads the team to a room where Sai is being kept hostage. Creating a wooden skeleton key from his finger, Yamato unlocks the room and they enter. Sai tries to lie, but an accidental smile allows Naruto to call his bluff. Sai then states that his mission is a failure and confirms that Danzo is indeed planning another strike at Konoha. However, he is also acting as a spy for Danzo, since Danzo knows as soon as Konoha is destroyed, Orochimaru will turn on him. Sai disapproves of rescuing Sasuke, saying that Sasuke doesn't see Naruto as a brother and that Orochimaru is too powerful for them. Naruto replies that he had formed a special bond between Sasuke and himself, and that he will fight Orochimaru with everything he has to get Sasuke back, even if it means sacrificing his life.
At this point, Kabuto shows up and frees Sai, but Sai shocks everyone by helping Yamato immobilize Kabuto. Kabuto is forthcoming, providing information on the interior of the lair, but not Sasuke's actual location. Team Kakashi split up to search for Sasuke, with Naruto teaming with Sai and Sakura with Yamato. Naruto, still tired from being in demon fox form, collapses, and Sai suggests taking a rest; Naruto is notably less hostile towards Sai at this point. Sai begins to talk about his brother, who resembles Naruto. The short chat soon ends as Orochimaru appears. Naruto tells Sai to find Sasuke while he holds off Orochimaru. As Yamato and Sakura arrive to back Naruto up, Orochimaru again mentions that he does not wish to kill them since both parties oppose Akatsuki. Orochimaru then leaves in order to locate Sai. Yamato finds a "Bingo Book" (a list of people who are tabbed for assassination) in Sai's bag, with Sasuke's name in it. Thus Naruto and Sakura realize that another part of Sai's original mission was to kill Sasuke, who had been listed as an enemy of Konoha by Danzo. Naruto is speechless, realizing that Sai has duped him with his "fake smiling" act.
Sai manages to find Sasuke in his room, and wakes him up. Sasuke, angry at Sai's mention of "bonds," fights him briefly. Sasuke wins, and the fight causes the room's walls and ceiling to explode. Sakura spots Sai in the hallway and runs to him. Though she means to attack Sai, Sasuke quietly says Sakura's name, stopping her in her tracks. Naruto, in his weakened state, finally catches up, breathing heavily, coming face to face with Sasuke again.
Meeting Sasuke again
As Sasuke observes the new Team Kakashi, Sai explains to Naruto and Sakura that his desire to protect the bond between Naruto and Sasuke have overridden the mission that Danzo gave him. Sasuke replies that he has broken his bond of friendship with Naruto and that the only bond he has left is a bond of hatred that he shares with Itachi. When Naruto confronts Sasuke about sparing his life before, Sasuke remarked that he had spared him at a whim, and now he would kill him at a whim. Sasuke shows off his new powers by moving right next to Naruto with blinding speed. He tells Naruto that someone who dreams of becoming Hokage shouldn't risk everything by chasing after one man.
As both Sai and Yamato move to try and protect Naruto, Sasuke uses a new technique: Chidori Nagashi, or One Thousand Birds Current, which projects electricity around his body and his new Kusanagi sword. He manages to stun Naruto and Sai, then wound Yamato. As Sasuke fights Yamato, Naruto undergoes a partial demon fox transformation. In Naruto's mind, he comes face to face with the demon fox, who implores Naruto to use his power. When Naruto refuses, the demon scoffs, saying Naruto has always come to him in times of need and that Naruto is worthless without his power. Suddenly, Sasuke appears in front of the demon fox, stunning both of them. Sasuke marvels at the source of Naruto's power. As Sasuke begins to push the demon fox back into its cage, the demon fox then remembers his past history with the Uchiha clan. He states that Sasuke may possess chakra even more evil than his own, "just like that Uchiha Madara." The fox also warns Sasuke not to kill Naruto, stating that he would regret it.
Outside of Naruto's mind, Yamato pushes the Kusanagi out of his wound and tries to trap Sasuke in a wooden prison. Sasuke blows a hole through the roof of the prison to escape. Naruto yells out to Sasuke that Orochimaru just wants to use Sasuke as the next container for his soul, to which Sasuke replies that as long as it helps to kill Itachi he doesn't care. Yamato then tells Naruto and Sakura that he didn't want to hurt Sasuke in front of them but he has no choice and will finish the confrontation. Sasuke plans to do the same and begins to form hand seals. Orochimaru returns just in time to stop Sasuke from performing his jutsu. Kabuto tells Sasuke to leave the Konoha shinobi alive so that they might oppose Akatsuki. Sasuke tells Kabuto that's a poor excuse to not kill Naruto, but leaves with Orochimaru and Kabuto anyway. Naruto is upset by the meeting, and Sakura consoles him. Sakura and Sai both assure him that they will help bring Sasuke back.
The team reports back to Konoha, during which Naruto tells Tsunade that they have not given up and will continue. Pleased by this response, Tsunade assigns the team a new mission. Later Sai reports to Danzo, who is displeased that Sai has failed his mission. Sai asks to remain with Team Kakashi and Danzo warns Sai that developing emotions will only lead to hatred and conflicts. Sai has flashbacks of recent events, ponders his own feelings, and realizes that he now has friends. Sai adds a title ("Friends") in front of his window, the first title he has ever given a picture. Having reclaimed his emotions, he heads off with Naruto, Sakura, and Yamato to begin their new mission.

Immortals Arc
Akatsuki activity
Two newly introduced Akatsuki members, Hidan and Kakuzu, are chasing after the Two-Tails container. They corner Yugito, the host of the Two-Tails, who states that she allowed herself to be cornered so she could destroy them. Hidan speaks of Jashin (his religion that believes in total annihilation), which annoys Kakuzu. Hidan then proceeds to ask Yugito to hold still so he can knock her out. Enraged by his comment, Yugito transforms into her full demon form, a large flaming cat, and attacks, much to Kakuzu's annoyance that Hidan provoked her and made things more difficult.
Hidan and Kakuzu defeat Yugito, and she is seen hanging from a wall, pinned there by a kunai through her hands. Hidan performs a bizarre ritual that involve impaling himself through the chest with a pike. Kakuzu reminds him that they have one host target left, and that they need to head for the Fire Country. As the two bicker over whether it is Kakuzu's love of money or Hidan's long rituals that are slowing the team down, Zetsu appears and takes charge of the Two-Tails, ordering them to find their next target.
Hidan and Kakuzu take a detour towards a Fire Country Temple. The head monk Chiriku, former bodyguard for the Fire Country's nobility, is listed in the bingo book with a 3 million ryō bounty.
Hidan and Kakuzu kill Chiriku and the other monks, but one monk manages to escape and informs Tsunade of the incident. While Hidan completes another ceremony, Kakuzu picks up the monk's corpse to collect the bounty and says that they need to proceed slowly since the Fire Country is so big. Alarmed, Tsunade orders Shizune to mobilize the new task force, the Niju Shotai. She briefs the Niju Shotai to capture the Akatsuki pair, or failing that, kill them. Asuma's group, consisting of himself, Shikamaru, Kotetsu Hagane, and Izumo Kamizuki, leaves for the Fire Temple. As they leave, Kurenai watches from her apartment with a concerned gaze.
Team Asuma arrives at the Fire Temple ruins, where the survivors have been unable to find Chiriku's body. The team realize that the Akatsuki pair has taken Chiriku's body to a bounty station to claim his bounty. They prepare to head for the closest one, sending messenger birds to teams near the other four. Before Team Asuma could leave, an elder monk prays for them. After he finished his prayers, the monk notices that Asuma wears the same sash as Chiriku's. He asks Asuma to be careful since all the 12 guardian ninja have large bounties. Asuma thanks the monk for his concern but says that he won't be killed that easily; his bounty is 5 million ryō higher than Chiriku's.
Hidan and Kakuzu finally reach the bounty station - a public toilet. They meet the bounty collector, who leads the pair to a secret room. He confirms that the body is Chiriku's. Pleased with their "fine catch," the collector hands Kakuzu the reward. Hidan loudly exits the bathroom, as he couldn't stand the stench - leaving his partner to count the money.
Elsewhere, Deidara, now paired with Tobi, confront the Three-Tails. Tobi is reluctant to attack and asks Deidara to cover for him, but Deidara says that Tobi is officially Akatsuki, and will have to fend for his own. The Three-Tails attacks and Tobi flees, drawing the demon's attention. Deidara follows them and creates a clay fish that swims down near the demon's head before exploding.
After the battle, Tobi stands atop of the defeated Three-Tails and gloats about how he brought down the demon. An unamused Deidara reminds Tobi that his exploding clay was the deciding factor. Deidara tells Tobi that an Akatsuki should be more reserved and not such a loudmouth. Tobi retorts that it's actually Deidara who is the loudmouth; earning him a thrashing from the latter. Deidara drags the Three-Tails to the shore, while reminding Tobi that the demon couldn't use its full powers since it had no host. Tobi lies silently on the demon's back and when he doesn't respond Deidara says he doesn't need to act 'that' restrained. However, when a snore escapes Tobi's mask, an angered Deidara "wakes" him up with exploding clay.
Training Naruto
After the encounter with Sasuke, Naruto realizes that Sasuke may be getting too strong for him. Kakashi reveals a special training method which takes advantage of Naruto's high chakra. It involves Multiple Shadow Clone Technique. Unlike an ordinary clone, (which is just an illusion), a shadow clone is an actual clone, and any experience it gains is passed back to the original. Thanks to the demon fox, Naruto has a very large amount of chakra, and can train hundreds of times faster using shadow clones. Yamato also assists in Naruto's training by helping restrain the demon fox.
Kakashi explains that there are five basic types of elemental chakra — fire, wind, water, lightning and earth. He pulls out special cards which react differently to each person's chakra. It will burn if fire, split if wind, crumple if lightning, turn to dust if earth, and turn wet if water. Naruto flows his chakra into the card and it splits, indicating he has an affinity to wind. Kakashi explains the wind type is very well suited for combat (in essence it is the strongest in battle) because of its ability to "blow past anything and slice things to bits."
The first part of the training is for Naruto and his clones to cut a leaf with his chakra. Kakashi notes that Naruto manages this faster than he expected. Naruto asks if there's anyone in Konoha who also has wind-element chakra, and Kakashi tells him to find Asuma Sarutobi.
Meanwhile, Asuma and Shikamaru are playing Shogi. Asuma makes a move where he plays his silver general. In the face of an advanced player, it won't really even work as a sacrifice to protect his King. Shikamaru notices that Asuma is playing differently from normal and asks if something is wrong. In describing things, Asuma describes Shikamaru in terms of shogi as a Knight, being weak in terms of power but having a unique style of movement that resembles Shikamaru and his flexibility in his thinking. Shikamaru then asks what piece Asuma resembles. Asuma then answers/hints that he is just a sacrificial pawn. Asuma then asks Shikamaru if he knows who the king represents. Shikamaru guesses the Hokage, but Asuma tells him that it's not, and that someday Shikamaru will understand.
Asuma has just lost another game to Shikamaru when Naruto shows up. Asuma makes a deal with Naruto; he will give Naruto pointers if he pays for Team 10's next barbeque dinner. He then pulls out his trench knives and says they're a special metal that absorbs the user's chakra and has Naruto flow his chakra into it. Asuma explains that to using wind chakra requires the user to split their chakra in two and then bring the parts together to form a tight edge. The tighter and more compact the edge, the 'sharper' the chakra becomes. Asuma demonstrates the strength of wind chakra by having both of them throw a trench knife at a tree. Naruto's knife sticks in the tree, but Asuma's cuts through the tree and pierces a rock behind it. Had he used his full chakra, the knife would have cut through the rock as well. Naruto thanks Asuma and disperses, revealing that he was a clone. Asuma comments that Naruto should have remembered Choji was on his team before making their deal.
Using this advice, Naruto is able to completely split a leaf. He is eager to move to the next phase but passes out after dispersing his clones. When Naruto regains consciousness Kakashi warns him that this form of training is going to wear him down quickly, and that he needs to rest for the next phase of his training: slicing a waterfall in half to master large bursts of wind chakra.
The next step of Naruto's training is progressing slowly with only eleven clones attempting to cut the waterfall. When Naruto complains, Kakashi notes that even Sasuke, despite being a genius, took several days to learn to manipulate an element, while Naruto did it in a few hours. This drives Naruto to train harder. Yamato gives in and extends the size of the waterfall, completely exhausting himself in the process. With more room, Naruto makes more shadow clones and continues training. By nightfall, Naruto hasn't managed to cut the waterfall. Naruto reflects on his fonder memories of Sasuke and decides to train through the rest of the night. By the next day, he and all his clones are able to cut the waterfall. Yamato is surprised by Naruto's progress, but Kakashi is not, since he understands how Naruto feels about Sasuke. Kakashi declares they can finally move into the final stage of Naruto's unique jutsu creation. However, the constant training has exhausted Naruto once more. All of the clones disperse and Naruto collapses in a fit of spasms and coughs. Kakashi immediately rushes to his side concerned that he may have pushed Naruto too far this time. However, when Naruto moans that he's hungry, Kakashi relaxes and smiles.
After enjoying a meal at Ichiraku Ramen, Naruto is anxious to go on with his training. Kakashi and Yamato explain "nature manipulation" and "form manipulation" to Naruto. Kakashi reminds Naruto that all the training till now has been nature manipulation and that the Spiraling Sphere is an example of extremely advanced form manipulation. By adding nature manipulation together with form manipulation, a ninja's power can grow by leaps and bounds. However, this is an extremely difficult task; even the Fourth Hokage was unable to "complete" the Spiraling Sphere by combining nature and form manipulation. Kakashi believes that Naruto is the one who will finally surpass the Fourth Hokage. Kakashi advises Naruto to rest before continuing the training. As the two Jonin leave, Yamato commends Kakashi for his smooth talk. Kakashi corrects him, saying that he sincerely believes in Naruto. This makes Naruto more determined than ever.
Akatsuki vs. Niju Shotai
As Kakuzu leaves the bounty station, the collector wishes him luck for another bounty. Kakuzu replies that bringing another bounty might take some time; he is preoccupied with capturing the tailed beast host in the Fire Country. The collector advises him to get another partner, since he feels that Hidan won't bring any luck with money. Though Kakuzu agrees, he explains the necessity of being paired with Hidan. Thanks to his uncontrollable temper, Kakuzu has killed all of his former partners in his fits of rage. On the other hand, Hidan just can't be killed. Hence they are paired. This alone allows Kakuzu to tolerate Hidan's attitude.
As Asuma's group move toward the bounty station, Shikamaru asks him how he knew Chiriku. He noticed that Asuma hasn't smoked recently; a sign that something's going on with him. Asuma explains that he and Chiriku both belonged to the 12 Guardian Ninja of Konoha, and that their relationship was akin to Shikamaru's relationship with Choji. Asuma stopped smoking because he needed no distractions if he were to fight Chiriku's killers.
Naruto is again training with his clones while Yamato uses his seal jutsu to control the demon fox's chakra. Naruto tries to infuse the Spiraling Sphere with wind chakra. However the jutsu explodes, sending all the clones around him flying in all directions. Frustrated, Naruto tries another attempt, but he accidentally brings forth the demon fox's chakra instead. He begins transforming into his four-tailed demon fox form. Yamato uses his dragon pillars to reverse the transformation. He tells Kakashi that he won't always be able to stop the demon fox's surges, and that they might have pushed Naruto too far. Kakashi reminds him that they have no other choice, and that success or failure rests on Yamato's ability to control the demon fox.
At the bounty station, Hidan complains of his reeking clothes as he sits outside. He turns around, only to see Asuma's team attacking him. Shikamaru immobilizes Hidan with a Shadow Bind; leaving him open to Izumo and Kotetsu, who stab him in the chest with their large kunai. However, Hidan is completely unfazed and with a perturbed look on his face asks who they are.
Asuma's team quickly realizes that Hidan cannot be killed by normal means. Kakuzu appears and prepares to join the fight, breaking Shikamaru's concentration, but Hidan tells him to stay out of it. Kakuzu complies; warning him to keep his guard up. When Kotetsu suggests a tactical retreat against these apparently superior foes, Asuma replies that they would only be killed. Asuma then commands the rest of his team to watch Kakuzu while he faces off with Hidan and Shikamaru backing him up. Hidan manages to cut Asuma's cheek, and licks the blood off his scythe just as the latter uses a fire jutsu. This burns Hidan's robe, but he emerges unscathed. Surprisingly, Asuma's right arm is badly burned; the damage meant for Hidan being somehow turned back upon himself. Hidan has completed his transformation; his skin turning black with white accents, giving him the appearance of a Grim Reaper. Hidan tells Asuma that his fate is sealed, and that now the two of them can share some exquisite pain together. Hidan means this quite literally, as any pain Hidan feels is transferred to Asuma. Since he's immortal, Hidan needs only to inflict a fatal wound on himself to kill Asuma. Luckily, Shikamaru catches Hidan in another Shadow Bind before he can do so. Kakuzu offers to help, but Hidan waves him off, claiming he can beat all four by himself. Going over every motion Hidan made to start the ritual, Shikamaru works out a countermeasure and tells Asuma to get ready.
Shikamaru explains to Kotetsu and Izumo that he understands how Hidan's curse works. Hidan first needs to consume his opponent's blood and then stand within his ceremonial circle. Once these two steps are completed any damage inflicted on Hidan is reflected back to his opponent. Shikamaru explains that in order to save Asuma, all he needs to do is move Hidan out of his circle using his Shadow Imitation Jutsu.
Shikamaru then proceeds to move Hidan out of the circle using his Shadow Imitation Jutsu. In order to find out if Hidan's curse has been broken, Asuma throws a shuriken at Hidan. It cuts Hidan's ear, but causes no harm to Asuma. Shikamaru then traps Hidan with Shadow Sewing. Hidan asks Kakuzu to help him, but Kakuzu nonchalantly replies that he told Hidan to be careful. Asuma slices Hidan's head off with his chakra blades, and it falls next to Kakuzu. Just when Team Asuma believes they have killed Hidan, his head starts talking, calling Kakuzu a b*****d for allowing him to be decapitated. Hidan asks Kakuzu to bring him his body, but Kakuzu grabs his head instead, saying that it is "lighter."
Shikamaru falls from exhaustion as Hidan complains about the pain of being decapitated. Asuma, Kotetsu and Izumo stand in amazement that Hidan is alive and plot their next move. Kakuzu suddenly attacks Asuma, then grabs Hidan's body. He reattaches Hidan's head using threads from his arms. Kotetsu and Izumo attempt to strike Kakuzu, whose forearms extend, grabbing both of them by the throat. Meanwhile, Hidan jumps back into the circle linking himself back to Asuma, and performs the fatal blow to himself.
Asuma collapses as his team looks on helplessly. Back in Konoha, Kurenai senses that something terrible may have happened. Utterly spent, Hidan reverts to his normal form as Kakuzu prepares to finish off the others. Suddenly a flock of crows appear, distracting the Akatsuki pair. Ino and Choji assist in moving Shikamaru and Asuma to a safer location as Aoba Yamashiro and Raido back them up. Shikamaru senses Asuma's pulse, and tells Ino and Choji to take him back to Konoha. However Kakuzu isn't going to let them leave with his 'bounty' and Hidan wishes to perform another ceremony on the new arrivals. Before they can attack, the Akatsuki Leader contacts them telepathically, saying that preparations for sealing the Three-Tails are already taking place. They reluctantly retreat, as Kakuzu reminds Hidan that sealing the Three-Tails takes bigger priority.
Team 10's efforts fail as their sensei succumbs to his wounds (Asuma's vital points have all been punctured). Asuma dies, but not before smoking his last cigarette, and sharing some final words with Ino, Shikamaru, and Choji. Shikamaru lights another of his cigarettes, which he begins to smoke himself. He tearfully mumbles that he hates cigarettes as they make his eyes water - a reference to when Team 10 first met their sensei.
Naruto continues his training, and one of his Kage Bunshin starts drawing on the Demon Fox's power. Yamato is able to reverse it. Naruto is depressed because he says that the Spiraling Sphere takes a huge amount of control to create and that adding Nature Manipulation is impossible, like trying to look left and right at the same time. Kakashi refutes his argument by using a shadow clone to look in two directions at once. Inspired, Naruto continues his training with a plan in mind.
As Akatsuki commences with sealing the Three-Tails, the leader explains their goals to the newcomers (Hidan & Tobi). Akatsuki's overall goal is world domination. To achieve that goal, the leader has set up a three-step process to work their way to it. First, they plan to obtain a large amount of money to support their organization. Second, they plan to set up a mercenary group loyal to no village. Because there haven't been any wars in some time, they can convince the smaller countries to hire them over the larger asking prices of the five main villages. By using the tailed beasts, they can start wars and then immediately quell them, convincing every country to depend on them and monopolizing the shinobi market. Finally, after they're the only major force of shinobi in existence, they can easily conquer the world.
Team 10 returns to Konoha and informs Tsunade of what had happened. Tsunade sends out the message for the funeral to everyone, but Shikamaru has a message for Kurenai from Asuma and will tell her what has happened himself. Naruto has nearly created the jutsu when they are informed of Asuma's death and rush back to the village. Shikamaru tells Kurenai the message and she collapses from grief. At the funeral Konohamaru cries for his uncle while Naruto comforts him. Shikamaru doesn't attend the funeral and spends his time seemingly formulating a strategy and learning how to use Asuma's trench knives. He has also picked up Asuma's habit of smoking.
Akatsuki vs. Team 10
The new three man team (Shikamaru, Ino, and Choji) finishes their preparations and leaves to continue Asuma's mission. Tsunade stops them at the last second, reprimanding Shikamaru for his rash actions. She refuses to let Team 10 go; they lack a captain. From the shadows, Kakashi volunteers, and the four-man team head off. Later in the woods, Shikamaru explains his strategy to Team 10.
Meanwhile, Akatsuki has finished sealing the three-tails. They prepare to extract the two-tails.
The bounty collector has been detained at Konoha, where Ibiki Morino interrogates him on information about Kakuzu. He refuses to budge, forcing Ibiki to threaten him with torture.
Sakura has a meeting with Tsunade and Shizune. Sakura says that Naruto has learned the jutsu, but just has to perfect it. She also says that they should be a backup team for Team 10. Shizune disagrees, saying that it'll be useless without Naruto's jutsu. Tsunade gives Yamato 24 hours to have Naruto's jutsu completed, or else she'll send another backup team.
Once Shikamaru is finished explaining, he gives Kakashi a small object, and tells him to use it if he has a chance. Kakashi thinks to himself what a great strategy Shikamaru has come up with, especially after him just entering the team. Akatsuki finishes sealing the two-tails, and Kakuzu and Hidan are free to go. Later in a barren forest, Kakuzu and Hidan decide to ignore the bounty house--to check in Asuma--and head straight for Konoha--to attack Naruto. Ino uses a nearby bird to spy on them and discover their route, and Team 10 moves to ambush them. Shikamaru sneaks his shadow near Hidan and Kakuzu, who both manage to jump out of the way. At that moment, two kunai with explosive tags are thrown from above. Hidan blocks with his rope while Kakuzu hardens his skin and guards with his hand. Hidan's rope is cut through, while Kakuzu is unharmed. Kakuzu tells Hidan to pay attention to the shadows, while Hidan retorts that he won't fall for the same trick again. Kakuzu alerts him to Shikamaru above them as he throws two objects with exploding tags, and Hidan and Kakuzu barely manage to dodge again. Hidan realizes the tags didn't explode, and Kakuzu comments that 'he got us': Hidan and Kakuzu are now unable to move. Shikamaru explains that what he threw was a chakra knife, which absorbs the user's chakra properties, then based on the jutsu it gives off an effect. He tells Hidan and Kakuzu he was not attacking them but their shadows as he thinks about Asuma describing him as a knight. Kakuzu realizes Shikamaru's plans, and thinks that he is 'quite sharp'.
Using his shadow, Shikamaru takes control of Hidan and uses him to attack Kakuzu. However, Kakuzu has thought a step ahead and used his detachable limbs to grab the trench knife pinning his shadow from underground, allowing him to dodge the attack. Kakuzu takes the opportunity to berate both his partner and Shikamaru for not thinking things through. He's still outnumbered, however, and Team 10 uses that to their advantage. Unfortunately, Choji's follow-up attack also proves to be useless, since Kakuzu can harden his body like iron. Despite this ability, Kakashi is still able to punch a hole through Kakuzu's chest using his Lightning Blade.
Meanwhile, though not concurrent with the current events of the fight, Naruto's new jutsu is shown to be powerful enough to produce a massive crater beneath him. Impressed with how far Naruto's come, Yamato decides to explain elemental strengths and weaknesses to Naruto. After much dumbing down, he illustrates that each element is both stronger and weaker than another. The order is fire, wind, lightning, earth, and water, with each being weaker than the previous and stronger than the next. Water loops back into fire. This circle of strength is the reason Kakashi's Lightning Blade pierced Kakuzu's earth-based hardened body. This also means that Naruto's jutsu is useless against Sasuke's fire-based attacks, but perfect against his lightning-based ones. Naruto reasons that his new jutsu will be able to break through Sasuke's lightning without putting out his fire, a metaphor for bringing him back alive successfully. Naruto also states that he has the right affinty for Sasuke because the only thing that keeps fire from dying and give it even more power is wind.
Back with Hidan and Kakuzu, Kakashi withdraws his hand and Kakuzu collapses. Kakashi attempts to do the same to Hidan, but is kicked away by Kakuzu, who doesn't seem injured from the supposedly fatal blow. Kakuzu takes off his cloak, revealing four animal masks on his back, one of which Kakashi broke. The masks separate and form four separate entities, but the broken one dissolves after forming. At the same time, Shikamaru's shadow wears off and Hidan is freed.
With the creatures separated, the two Akatsuki go on the attack. Hidan then prays to his god and attacks Kakashi. As Kakashi blocks, the bird mask appears behind Hidan and fires a massive wind shockwave at Kakashi, not bothering to avoid Hidan. Ino notes that since Hidan's immortal, it doesn't matter if the creature fires through him. The ox mask then attacks Shikamaru and Choji with a massive lightning blast, but it's blocked at the last second by Kakashi using two lightning blades (one in each hand), now stripped of his combat vest and headband. The Akatsuki duo compliment Kakashi on being able to avoid the attacks using his Sharingan, since no one had managed to do so before. Kakuzu then sends the next animal mask, a lion, at Kakashi. It prepares to unleash its fire attack, called "Intense Pain."
Kakashi and Team 10 all manage to dodge the fire attack. They discover that Kakuzu has five hearts in total; one in each of the animals linked to him and also one in his own body. It is revealed that Kakuzu acquired his hearts from previous shinobi that he killed. He is able to use their elements in battle because he acupunctured them into his body. Kakuzu remarks that he plans on restocking up with the hearts of Kakashi and company after he kills them. Shikamaru determines that they need to kill Kakuzu four more times (since Kakashi previously destroyed a mask containing a heart), but first they need to separate the duo, since Hidan and Kakuzu are quite difficult to defeat as a team. Shikamaru pursues the evasive Hidan with his Shadow Imitation Jutsu, which Hidan avoids by keeping a close eye on his shadow. However, Hidan is so focused on his shadow that he carelessly allows Shikamaru to punch him in the face, thus connecting their shadows and completing the technique.
After completing the technique, Shikamaru drags Hidan off to an isolated location and prevents any escape by littering the area with exploding tags on strings. Hidan assumes that Shikamaru has reached his shadow’s limit, and attacks once Shikamaru releases him. Hidan tries to activate his ritual using Shikamaru's blood, and seems to succeed.
Meanwhile, Kakuzu mocks Team 10’s strategy, claiming that they have underestimated Hidan. He also gives a hint as to how long he has lived, mentioning that the first Konoha ninja he fought was the First Hokage. Though he has lived a long time he doesn't believe that anything can be immortal. Every time one of his five hearts is destroyed or naturally wears out, Kakuzu replaces it with the heart of another ninja. Kakuzu proceeds to attack combining the fire and wind masks. Although Kakashi manages to barely escape using a water barricade jutsu, he is caught by Kakuzu's threads. As Kakuzu prepares to tear out Kakashi's heart, he instead clutches his own. This is resulted from Hidan stabbing himself as part of his curse ritual, as it turns out that Hidan is using Kakuzu's blood to activate the ritual. Kakashi collected a small sample of Kakuzu's blood during his first attack which went through Kakuzu's chest and gave it to Shikamaru.
Team 7's Arrival
Hidan does not immediately realize what has happened, but Shikamaru attacks him to illustrate the point. However, Shikamaru is weakened from the extended use of his shadow jutsu and cannot hold down Hidan for long - left almost devoid of chakra, he watches Hidan advance to strike the single blow needed for his ritual. Meanwhile, two masks launch an attack on Team 10. Though Choji smacks them away with ease, a third mask uses the distraction to sacrifice its heart to Kakuzu. Using his threads, Kakuzu ensnares all three members of Team 10 and prepares to obliterate them with his fire and wind masks. As he attacks, a vortex of wind and water (a combination of Yamato's water jutsu and Naruto's Wind Release: Spiraling Sphere called Drowning Maelstrom technique) surrounds Team 10 and blocks the blast. Naruto, Sakura, Yamato and Sai appear once the water settles, and apologize for being late.
Kakashi, Ino, and Choji are relieved at Team 7's timely arrival. Yamato is surprised to see Kakashi so beat up. Naruto asks where Shikamaru is, to which Choji explains. Yamato orders Sai and Sakura to back Shikamaru up, and Kakashi summons Pakkun to lead them. Naruto resolves to defeat Kakuzu on his own and receives words of encouragement from Sakura. Kakashi wonders if Naruto completed his new jutsu. Yamato explains that Naruto is only halfway there, but assures Kakashi that Naruto is a completely new ninja.
Meanwhile, Hidan tries to finish off Shikamaru, only to be caught by his shadows again. Having prepared the area in advance, Shikamaru uses his shadows to pull the explosive tags onto Hidan, and opens a deep pit beneath him. Shikamaru tells Hidan that he dug his own grave when he killed Asuma. At first surprised, Hidan insists that even if only his head survives, he will find a way to escape, and then kill Shikamaru. Shikamaru calmly explains that they are on his clan's land, and that his clan will keep Hidan buried for eternity. Lighting a cigarette, Shikamaru sees a vision of Asuma, who congratulates him before disappearing. Saying his last goodbye, Shikamaru tosses the lit cigarette at Hidan, igniting the explosive tags covering him and causing a massive explosion.

Jutsu
In the anime and manga series Naruto a jutsu (術, jutsu? "technique" or "skill") is a general term referring to any technique a ninja might use that an ordinary human would likely be unable to naturally imitate. Jutsu often rely on the manipulation of chakra by various methods, the most common of which is hand seals. In some cases the line between a simple action and a jutsu is blurred and vague, allowing for some humor (Naruto Uzumaki: "What? How did you get loose?!" Sasuke Uchiha: "Rope Untying Jutsu. It's basic stuff.")
So far, several hundred different jutsu have been revealed, which have slightly different names depending on the media in which they appear. The English versions of the Naruto manga and anime both use different names for the jutsu, which usually don't match the literal translation of the Japanese name for the jutsu. The English dub of the anime tends to leave the word "jutsu" untranslated, whereas the English manga translates it to "[jutsu name] Technique" or "Art of [jutsu name]."
Chakra
Essential to even the most basic jutsu, chakra is mixture of the energy present in every cell of the body and the spiritual energy gained from exercise and experience. Once mixed, it can be channeled through the chakra circulatory system, which is to chakra as the regular circulatory system is to blood, to any of the 361 chakra points on the body. Through various methods, the most common of which is handseals, the chakra can then be manipulated to create an effect that would not be possible otherwise, such as walking on water.
Depending on the ratio in which physical and spiritual energy is mixed, different types of chakra can be formed. Elemental chakra is the most common product of this, and is used to perform elemental jutsu. The five elemental natures are earth, fire, lightning, water, and wind. Most ninja have a natural affinity to one type of chakra, but have the capacity to create elemental chakra apart from their own affinity. Each element is both stronger and weaker than another. The order is fire, wind, lightning, earth, and water, with each being weaker than the previous and stronger than the next. Water loops back into fire. Additionally, elemental techniques can be countered by techniques of the same element, provided the technique being countered is of equal or lesser power.
Certain kekkei genkai can also create unique elements, such as wood and ice, through a mixture of the basic elements, which normal ninja are incapable of doing. While some ninja are capable of producing varied types of chakra, they can't do so simultaneously. Yamato also mentions light and dark chakra, but doesn't elaborate on what they're used for.
Basic information
Generally speaking, jutsu are divided into three categories: genjutsu, ninjutsu, and taijutsu. Ninjutsu also has two sub-categories: sealing jutsu and cursed seal jutsu, which are jutsu used to create seals for various purposes.
There are also kekkei genkai abilities. These are not actually jutsu, but genetically-inherited abilities that are only possessed by specific clans. Some jutsu are based on kekkei genkai, like Itachi Uchiha's Tsukuyomi, and are considered Hiden (秘伝, Hiden? "Secret") jutsu.
Depending on the difficulty or skill necessary to perform a jutsu, they will be ranked differently. There are a total of six ranks, plus two informal ranks for special circumstances. The rank of a jutsu doesn't necessarily mean it will be more effective than a lower-ranked jutsu, just more difficult to perform properly. The overall effectiveness of any given jutsu is largely based on individual skill. The two informal ranks are Hiden jutsu and kinjutsu (禁術, kinjutsu? "forbidden technique"). Hiden jutsu are jutsu passed down from generation to generation within a clan. These jutsu are not ranked since no one outside the clan knows how to perform them. Kekkei genkai-based jutsu also fall under this rank since it is impossible for anyone else to perform them. Kinjutsu, on the other hand, often do fall into one of the six main ranks, but are an exception because they are forbidden (or, at the very least, frowned upon) to learn or perform. A technique can be categorized as kinjutsu if it either causes great harm to the user, such as opening the Eight Gates, or if the techniques are dark or sinister in nature, such as those used by Orochimaru. The six main jutsu ranks are as follows:
E-rank: Academy student level
D-rank: Genin level
C-rank: Chunin level
B-rank: Jonin level
A-rank: Kage level or Jonin level
S-rank: Secret: extreme level
Cursed Seal jutsu Juin jutsu (呪印術, Juin jutsu? "Cursed Seal Techniques") are jutsu that use a special 'cursed seal' to put someone under the control of the user or elicit an unnatural effect in the one they are placed on.
Genjutsu (幻術, Genjutsu? "Illusion Techniques") are techniques that use the chakra in the victim's nervous system to create illusions; basically an advanced intellectual ninjutsu. Those with special abilities like the Uchiha clan's Sharingan or those with high intelligence have an easier time executing and countering genjutsu, since attention to detail is key. The most commonly seen genjutsu is the simple creation of phantasms – causing the targeted person(s) to hear, see, smell, taste and/or feel sensations that are not actually there in order to manipulate them. In other words, genjutsu affects the five senses, though other applications of genjutsu exist. Those under the influence of genjutsu either freeze in place or lose consciousness, depending on how capable they are in recognizing and defending against it.
There are several ways to counter genjutsu. Because it uses the victim's own chakra against them, the target can cancel the genjutsu by disrupting their own chakra flow. This is called Genjutsu Cancel (幻術解, Genjutsu Kai?). Alternatively, should they fail to cancel the genjutsu, intense pain (though not that caused by the genjutsu) can snap them out of it. Finally, someone else can disrupt their chakra flow for them through physical contact. The level of a genjutsu determines the difficulty in breaking it.
Kekkei Genkai (血継限界, Kekkei Genkai? "Bloodline Limits") are abilities passed down genetically in specific clans. Most clans have developed special jutsu related to their kekkei genkai (like Haku's Demonic Ice Mirrors or Kimimaro Kaguya's Dance of the Seedling Fern). Kekkei genkai and their related jutsu cannot be taught or copied by others, as they require the specific genetic trait to work. Kekkei genkai abilities that work via the user's eye are called dōjutsu (瞳術, dōjutsu? "pupil techniques").
Ninjutsu (忍術, Ninjutsu? "Ninja Techniques") is a vague term referring to pretty much any technique that uses chakra and allows the user to do something that they otherwise would be incapable of doing. Unlike genjutsu, which makes the opponent see illusions, the effects of ninjutsu are quite real. Ninjutsu relies on chakra and, most of the time, hand seals (each hand seal showing a different animal in the Chinese zodiac) to be effective. The hands are put in sequential positions that mold chakra in the necessary manner to perform a jutsu. This is not always consistent, however, and some of the simpler jutsu seem to become second nature to experienced ninja, after which they can perform them at will. Additionally, some ninjutsu can be classified as an elemental jutsu, in those cases where a specific element (earth, fire, lightning, water, wind) is used.
Sealing jutsu (封印術, Sealing jutsu? fūin jutsu) are jutsu that 'seal' something inside objects or living beings. The most common application of this is sealing weapons or other objects within scrolls to efficiently carry a large number of items.
Taijutsu (体術, Taijutsu? "Body Techniques" or "hand-to-hand combat") refers to any techniques involving the martial arts or the optimization of natural human abilities in general. In other words, taijutsu is executed by accessing the user's stamina directly, rather than converting the user's stamina to chakra in order to execute a ninjutsu or genjutsu technique, meaning that taijutsu is much quicker to execute than (though potentially not as powerful as) ninjutsu or genjutsu. In some cases, chakra is used to enhance the techniques, particularly in the Hyuga clan's Gentle Fist style. Generally speaking, however, a taijutsu user rarely uses chakra in their attacks.

Cursed Seal jutsu
Hyuga branch family seal
This seal is given to all branch house members in the Hyuga clan by the main house. Its main purpose is to seal their Byakugan ability should they die, preventing an enemy from learning its secrets. Its secondary purpose is to control the branch house, since it can be activated at will by a main house member with a hand seal that only they know about. The seal is placed on the wearer's forehead at an early age, and is only removed upon their death. It works by destroying the wearer's brain cells.
In the original manga and Viz's volume distribution of the manga, the seal is shown as a manji, also known as a sauwastika or a sun wheel. In the anime and Viz's monthly distribution of the manga, it was changed to a simple saltire for fears of negative reactions, as the opposite-facing swastika is the symbol of the Nazi party.
Orochimaru's cursed seals
Orochimaru commonly uses cursed seals on his most powerful followers. To apply a cursed seal, Orochimaru needs to actually bite his intended target. Because he has sharp fangs and an extendable neck, this is a relatively simple task. The seal then appears somewhere on the user's body, and they subsequently lose consciousness. Sometime later, should they survive, they will awaken with the first level of the seal active and more than likely somewhat enraged. The seals work by forcibly drawing chakra from the user's body, giving the user a chakra capacity beyond what they would normally be capable of when active, as well as increased physical performance as a result of the increased chakra capacity.
The seals have two different levels, which can be determined by their appearance on the user. When inactive, the seal will simply be a black tattoo somewhere on the user's body. Orochimaru has a wide array of cursed seals, so the appearance of the seal will usually vary from user to user. Each seal always has three identical marks arranged in a circular pattern. When first activated, the marks on the seal glow and replicate, spreading over the user's body. This is known as the first level of the seal. The degree to which this occurs is dependent on the user, and the degree to which it spreads is proportionate to the overall effect it has. The second and final level of the seal causes the black marks to completely envelop the user. This is followed by an unnatural alteration of the user's body, with the only common features being yellow eyes with a black retina (Sasuke's Sharingan is an exception). When in this level, the seal eats away at the user's personality, driving them to madness if used too long. It also takes quite a toll on their body, since they are being mutated by the seal.
Because the seals forcibly draw chakra from the user, they will often kill the user when first applied. Orochimaru has averaged a ten-percent success rate when applying these seals. Additionally, even if the user survives, their body will not be able to easily control the power the seals give them. To compensate for this, Orochimaru developed the Seishingan drug. The drug forces the user's body to become accustomed to the unnatural increase in power, but also kills the one who takes it. The Four Black Fog Formation Seal technique is used to keep the drug from killing the user by placing them in a temporary death state. Though Sound Four were the ones to perform the technique, it stands to reason that they weren't the ones that created it.
Cursed Seal of Heaven
Name: Ten no Juin, 天の呪印, literally "Cursed Seal of Heaven"
Wearers: Sasuke Uchiha, Anko Mitarashi
This seal consists of three tomoe, not unlike the Sharingan. It is the counterpart to the Cursed Seal of Earth, and the two seals are the strongest of all the cursed seals that Orochimaru uses. The seal spreads over the user's body like flame when activated.
Anko received her cursed seal while she was a student of Orochimaru's. She, along with nine others, were the first people to receive a cursed seal. She was the only one to survive the application, hence the one in ten chance established by Orochimaru, but lacked the necessary will to use it. As such, her seal receded and Orochimaru wiped her memory. Orochimaru was able to reactivate it when they fought in the Forest of Death. It is possible that Orochimaru intended to use her as his next host, but was disappointed when he learned she lacked the malice to use the seal. Since Anko never uses her seal, her mutated form is never seen.
Sasuke also survived the application of the cursed seal. Orochimaru gives it to him against his will during the second stage of the Chunin exam. Orochimaru gave it to him as a test of the Uchiha clan's abilities, as well as a way to prepare Sasuke for becoming his next host. After Sasuke won his battle during the preliminary matches of the Chunin exam, Kakashi Hatake used the Evil Sealing Method, the effectiveness of which is dependent on the user's will to restrict the cursed seal. Regardless, Sasuke came to rely on the Heaven seal's power, thus weakening Kakashi's seal. Sasuke unlocked the Heaven seal's full power with the help of the Sound Four. When the second level of the seal is active, Sasuke's skin turns dark-gray and his hair grows much longer without losing its style. Additionally, he grows hand-shaped wings from his back.
Cursed Seal of Earth
Name: Chi no Juin, 地の呪印, literally "Cursed Seal of Earth"
Wearers: Kimimaro Kaguya
The counterpart of the Cursed Seal of Heaven, this seal was given to Kimimaro by Orochimaru in the hope that he might one day become his next host. Unfortunately for the both of them, Kimimaro contracted a fatal disease. The seal consists of three slightly curved lines, which spread in a square pattern. When the second level of the seal is active, Kimimaro takes on a dinosaur-like appearance, complete with a tail. Several large bones also protrude from his skin, and his skin becomes dark purple.
Sound Four's cursed seals
Each member of the Sound Four uses a cursed seal. Their seals, however, are not as powerful as the Heaven and Earth seals, although they have similar end results. Not all of their seals are named.
Jirobo's cursed seal consists of three triangles. When the second level of his seal is active, his skin turns red and his hair grows longer. He also grows warts on his forehead and shoulders.
Kidomaru's cursed seal consists of three spirals. When the second level of his seal is active, a third eye opens on his forehead and his hair grows longer. He also grows horns on his forehead and his elbows.
Sakon and Ukon both have the same type of cursed seal, which consists of three irregularly-shaped dots. When the second level of their seals are active, they resemble ogres with red skin, a single horn (on opposite sides for each brother), and can grow armor from their bodies. They can also extend his fusing abilities to someone other than each other.
Finally, Tayuya's cursed seal consists of three hooks, similar to a triskelion. When the second level of her seal is active, her hair grows longer, she grows five oddly-placed horns, and her skin turns dark brown. The horns grow when she exerts herself.
Mizuki's cursed seal
Mizuki was shown to have received a mark similar to a cursed seal in the anime. This was not a cursed seal, however, but actually a blueprint to one of Orochimaru's forbidden experiments. Like Orochimaru's regular cursed seals, it glows red when activated, but the only accompanying change is the appearance of instructions on the tattoo. The experiment used a device to mix various animal-based chemicals into a digestible red liquid, which in turn gave the drinker animal-like abilities. Mizuki's tattoo, shaped like the device, identified the order in which to mix the chemicals.
After stealing the necessary ingredients from the Nara clan's medical laboratory, Mizuki created the potion and drank it. This increased his musculature, caused three tiger-like stripes to appear on his arms, and increased his physical attributes in much the same manner as a cursed seal. Additionally, he was able to channel all of his chakra into strength and the energy changed his appearance to resemble a tiger's. As a side effect of focusing all his chakra on strength, his speed decreased dramatically.
Though quite effective, Orochimaru neglected to tell Mizuki that the potion was incomplete. Drinking it burned up all the energy in Mizuki's cells, leaving him a withered husk of a person. This would have killed him in normal circumstances, but Tsunade's medical expertise saved him from what would otherwise have meant his death. Unfortunately for Mizuki, the damage caused left him unable to ever continue his life as a ninja.
Naruto the Movie 2
In the second Naruto movie, the antagonist Haido was able to make children extremely powerful and turn them into demon-like creatures using Gelel stones, a life-enhancing stone found in the movie. Haido himself transforms using the Stone of Gelel and gains wing-like protrusions, much like Sasuke does when he uses the second level of his Heaven seal.

Bringer-of-Darkness Technique
Name: Kokuangyō no Jutsu, 黒暗行の術, literally "Bringer of Darkness Technique", English TV "Genjutsu: Infinite Darkness Jutsu"

Users: First Hokage, Second Hokage (anime only)
This jutsu makes the target think that they are surrounded by total darkness, allowing the user to attack unseen. In the anime, the Second Hokage was the one to initiate this technique. In the manga, it was the First Hokage.
Death Foreseeing Technique
Name: Shikumi no Jutsu, 死の観覧の術, literally "Death Foreseeing Technique" or "Death Viewing Technique" (Killing Intention), English TV "Murderous Intent"
Type: Unknown
Users: Orochimaru
This jutsu is much like the Temporary Paralysis Technique, but paralyzes the foe by showing them a vision of their own gruesome death. In addition to the paralysis, the enemy is overwhelmed with fear, and will no doubt suffer severe mental stress.
Demonic Flute: Dream Sound Chain
Name: Mateki: Mugen'onsa, 魔笛・夢幻音鎖, literally "Demonic Flute: Dream Sound Chain"

Using her flute, Tayuya can make her target feel as if they are tied with numerous wires, restricting their movement. Soon after, their flesh will begin to melt away from their bones, causing great pain and horror to the target. The jutsu must be maintained by the melody of the flute.

Name: Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu, 魔幻・此処非の術, literally "Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique"

This jutsu causes the target to see a horrifying vision. First, an imaginary circle of leaves will spin around and envelop the target, falling away shortly after. After a short period, the illusion will begin. This is to make the illusion more convincing, since the user will likely have moved before the illusion sets in.
Demonic Illusion: Mirror Heaven and Earth Change

With this jutsu, the user can make themselves disappear, allowing them to approach their target unnoticed. Once completed, a tree and roots will grow at the target's feet and restrict their movements. Once the opponent believes that they are captured, the user can then appear above their opponent from the tree's trunk and kill the target. In the Kurama clan filler arc of the anime, this jutsu seems to be quite versatile, with a wide range of variations on the standard nature theme. In addition to the disappearing and tree-growing effects of the jutsu, the user can produce flowers, seedpods, vines and multiple trees.
Mist Servant Technique
Name: Kasumi Jūsha no Jutsu, 霞従者の術, literally "Mist Servant Technique"

This jutsu creates clones that phase in and out of the ground as if they were made of a blackish, oil-like liquid. When attacked, the clones regenerate themselves. The clones can be controlled to make it seem as if they're throwing kunai. The user can then time their attacks with those of the clones.
Sly Mind Affect Technique
Name: Kori Shinchū no Jutsu, 狐狸心中の術, literally "Sly Mind Affect Technique"

This jutsu causes the enemy to walk around in circles for hours by making it seem as if they're walking straight to their desired destination. The enemy eventually becomes exhausted after traveling the same path over and over.
Temple of Nirvana Technique

This jutsu causes everyone within a specific area to fall into a deep sleep. From the target's point of view, it seems as if feathers are falling from the sky, which serves as a distraction to allow the jutsu to take effect. The downside, however, is that it takes a fair amount of time to take effect, and any experienced ninja has more than enough time to dispel it.
Tsukuyomi
Name: Tsukuyomi, 月読, literally "Moon Reader"

Named after the Shinto moon god, Tsukuyomi, this jutsu is one of the most powerful genjutsu in existence. It is unique to the Uchiha clan and only those with the Mangekyo Sharingan can perform it. When executed, the jutsu traps the target in an illusionary world that is completely controlled by the user. While it only takes a few seconds to complete in the real world, the user can make it seem as if days have passed for the target. Depending on the user's whim, they can either torture their target for days on end, or make them relive a traumatic event over and over. Once the jutsu is finished, the target will not be able to fight for some time, if they don't suffer complete mental collapse.
While the illusion is never the same twice, some elements always remain. The first and foremost similarity is the red moon, which hangs in the sky of each illusion. The moon, in turn, casts a red light throughout the illusion, giving the background a blood-red appearance while the figures within the illusion are solid black with white outlines.
Because the Sharingan is the main factor in executing this jutsu, eye contact is required. When he used it on Sasuke Uchiha, however, Itachi seemed to force Sasuke to open his eyes. Sasuke had both eyes closed prior to Itachi's activation of the technique, but opened them in shock as Itachi used the technique. Alternatively, Itachi may have simply caused Sasuke enough pain to open his eyes, or Sasuke did so by himself, despite how unwise such an action was.
Such a powerful technique is not without its disadvantages, though. Because of the complexity of the illusion and the quickness with which it is executed, an enormous amount of chakra is necessary to perform it.

Demonic Illusion: Descending Hell Technique

Illusion Bell Needles
Name: Suzu Senbon no Genkaku, スズ千本の幻覚, literally "Illusion Bell Needles"

Kin Tsuchi can use this technique with her specially designed bells. By attaching the bells to senbon (throwing needles) and throwing them at her target, she can get them to dodge and subsequently ignore the bells. Additionally, the target may believe the bells are actually designed to lull them into a false sense of security. In actuality, she has strings attached to the bells, which allows her to ring them. The bells ring at a certain frequency, which directly affects the brain. This causes her target to see multiple copies of herself, making it impossible to tell the real one from the illusions. Additionally, the target loses their motor skills with continued exposure to the ringing.
Time Reversal Technique
Name: Jigyaku no Jutsu, 時逆の術 literally "Time Reversal Technique"

Users: ANBU
This technique puts the target in a state of reverse hypnosis, allowing them to remember details that they otherwise would not. The target will comply with interrogation, but seems to retain his or her personality while under hypnosis. For example, when the ANBU used this technique to bring back Naruto's memories about his conversations with Gennou, Naruto was more specific about the ramen he shared with the old man rather than their conversations, which the ANBU were asking about.

List of Kekkei genkai
Byakugan
The Byakugan (白眼, Byakugan? literally "White Eye", Viz "Evil Eye") is a special pupil condition (瞳術, Dōjutsu?, literally "eye technique") that naturally occurs in members of the Hyuga clan (and thus only characters from the Hyuga clan possess it). Byakugan users are characterized by their lavender, pupil-less eyes. When the Byakugan is activated, their pupils appear and the veins near their temples bulge.
A person with the Byakugan has a nearly 360 degree field of vision except for a small blind spot behind the first thoracic vertebra (near the back of the neck), which is its only known weakness. Byakugan users can detect anything around them within a 50-meter radius (although Neji Hyuga manages to increase the radius to over 800 meters during the timeskip), making them close-range combat experts. The Byakugan also gives the user the ability to see through basically any matter over extremely long distances. This seems to be a combination of x-ray and thermographic vision, as Hinata notes in the Bikochu filler arc that objects can be difficult to see if their temperature is the same as the objects around them. A small degree of telescopic vision is also present, as a Byakugan user can focus on a single object at any point within their range of vision. The degree of focus seems to be dependent on the skill of the user. The Byakugan's sight cannot be blocked, except in the case of something like Ranmaru's kekkei genkai ability, unlike the Sharingan, which can be blocked by any sufficiently non-transparent substance. It is however, possible to impede it slightly through the use of certain powerful seals. The Byakugan's insight capacity makes it useful for searching, tracking, and identifying targets.
One of the most powerful aspects of the Byakugan is the ability to see the inner chakra coil system, which is the key aspect of using Gentle Fist to attack said system. If sufficiently developed, the Byakugan is able to see individual chakra points, potentially allowing the user to shut off the opponent's chakra flow completely, such that the opponent cannot perform techniques that require chakra. Seasoned Byakugan users are even capable of killing with a single blow.
Protection of the Byakugan ability is very important to the Hyuga clan, and has led to the development of an elaborate family hierarchy. The Hyuga clan is divided into two houses: the main house (宗家, sō-ke?) and the branch house (分家, bun-ke?). The branch house's main purpose is to protect the main house and the secrets of the Byakugan. Branch house members' abilities and freedom are restricted through the means of a cursed seal that is placed on every branch house member's forehead. Through the means of a special technique that only main house members know, the seal can be activated, destroying the brain cells of the person branded with the seal. This allows the main house to make the branch house subordinate to its wishes. In addition, whenever a branch house member dies, the cursed seal will also seal the Byakugan ability so that enemies will not be able to discover the secrets of the bloodline limit if Konoha's hunter-nin are unable to find and dispose the body before the enemy finds it.
There are several techniques developed specifically for Byakugan users, which complement and make use of the Byakugan's abilities – most notable among which are the defensive barrier technique Eight Trigram Palms Heavenly Spin and the high-speed precision attack Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms. Both Hinata and Neji have developed more powerful variants of these techniques.
Hyoton
Haku's kekkei genkai, Hyoton (氷遁, Hyoton? literally "Ice Release", dubbed "Haku's Secret Arts of Water" by Viz) allowed him to combine wind and water-based chakra to create ice, which he could manipulate through willpower alone, as seen in the anime from a flashback where he was manipulating water in his hands and again when he uses water to create a field of icicles through his house by freezing water.
Using his special ability, Haku developed a number of powerful techniques. His most powerful technique, Demonic Ice Mirrors, allowed him to surround an opponent with an array of ice mirrors and attack them at an incredible speed. He also developed Thousand Flying Water Needles of Death, which only required one hand to perform the seals. With it, he could create a thousand needles out of water and send them flying at his opponent.
In the first Naruto movie, several of the Yukigakure ninja also had the ability to use Hyoton techniques. However, this was not the product of a similar kekkei genkai, as demonstrated by Kakashi's ability to replicate one of these jutsu with his own kekkei genkai, the Sharingan.
Kurama clan's kekkei genkai
Introduced in the filler saga of the anime, every few generations a member of the Kurama clan will be born with an incredible talent for genjutsu. The clan member's talent in that field is such that their genjutsu is completely irresistible, so much so that only knocking a person out cold has any chance of awakening them from it. Furthermore, the genjutsu is so powerful that it literally convinces the brain to copy anything that happens to the victim within the genjutsu, making it possible for the clan member to kill their opponents with genjutsu. Such frightening power is not without its drawbacks, however. The user can rarely control the full extent of their abilities, and as such their subconscious will often regulate that power, leading to the creation of a second personality in control of that power. This personality then overwhelms the original, turning the individual into a monster that's a danger to everyone around them.
Mokuton
The Mokuton (木遁, Mokuton? literally "Wood Release") techniques are initially used by the First Hokage, and it is said that because of his unique ability he was chosen as the First, and that he used his wood type techniques to create Konoha village. Yamato, who received DNA from the First as a result of an experiment done by Orochimaru, also demonstrates the ability to use Mokuton jutsu. Mokuton techniques are performed by combining earth and water-based chakra simultaneously, thus causing trees to grow from any location the user wishes (including himself, as demonstrated by Yamato's ability to branch wood clones off of himself). The shape can also be controlled to a fine degree, allowing makeshift structures to be grown quickly in battle. During a mission with Team 7, Yamato actually grew the team a log house using his Mokuton ability for camping purposes.
A secondary, and not necessarily related, skill is the First's ability to control tailed beasts, which Yamato also gained. With this ability, Yamato can forcibly reverse Naruto's Demon fox transformation. Tsunade's incredibly valuable necklace, which Naruto currently possesses, is said to help enhance this particular skill.
Ranmaru's kekkei genkai
Ranmaru, from the filler arc of the anime, has a kekkei genkai ability similar to the Byakugan and Zetsu's spying technique, but arguably better than both. Its powers allow him to see through solid objects and create illusions with chakra circulatory systems, which allows him to fool Neji's Byakugan. It also allows him to interfere with the workings of the Byakugan, and has other vaguely defined powers regarding vision. When activated, Ranmaru's eyes momentarily glow red. Not much else is known about his bloodline limit.
Sharingan
The Sharingan (写輪眼, Sharingan? literally "Copy Wheel Eye", Viz "Mirror Wheel Eye") is a special type of pupil condition that naturally occurs in all members of the Uchiha clan, though not all of them gain the ability to use it. Itachi hints at some dark ultimate purpose behind the Sharingan, which both he and Sasuke apparently know, but the series has yet to reveal exactly what that purpose is. The Sharingan is thought to be descended from the Byakugan, but grants the user different abilities and a different insight.
The Sharingan's first and most well known ability is to memorize any technique that it witnesses. It can memorize ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu with perfect accuracy, allowing the user to use the techniques as his own. In order to reproduce copied jutsu, however, one must have the necessary skill or ability to perform them. A prime example is Rock Lee's brand of taijutsu. While Sasuke was able to copy some of Lee's moves, they put a much more significant strain on him since he hasn't trained nearly as hard as Lee has. In addition to physical skill, the Sharingan cannot allow the user to reproduce other kekkei genkai since the Sharingan user doesn't possess the same genetic trait. Additionally, Sharingan users cannot summon a creature which they have not made a contract with.
The Sharingan also grants the user incredible clarity of perception, allowing them to track fast-moving objects with ease and even predict the subsequent movements of those objects. The ability to track and predict movement is largely based on individual skill, as unskilled users have much more trouble tracking fast-moving objects. A fully-evolved Sharingan eye can track all but the quickest opponents, even if the user can't move at the same speed. This perception is also great enough to see through genjutsu, depending upon the skill of the user, and the ability to observe the movement and flow of chakra, but not to the same extent or clarity as the Byakugan. Additionally, the Sharingan grants the user exceptional analytical powers, allowing them to instinctively pick up on various visual clues with little difficulty. In one instance, Kakashi had to shut his eyes to avoid accidentally reading Naruto's lip movements while he was spoiling the ending of one of Kakashi's Icha Icha books. Sasuke is also able to reproduce answers on another person's test by watching their pencil movements during the Chunin Exam.
Finally, the Sharingan is capable of a unique brand of hypnosis that involves suggesting actions and thoughts to the opponent. When used in conjunction with the other aspects of the Sharingan, this allows the user to perfectly mimic every move their opponent makes, even before they do, making it appear as if the user can see the future.
The Sharingan does not automatically appear from birth in a user; instead, it will usually appear when the user is in a life-threatening situation, where the power of the Sharingan could save the user. After this first appearance, the user can then call up the Sharingan any time he or she pleases. (Due to its unique nature, Kakashi's Sharingan cannot be deactivated, and thus he usually covers it to conserve chakra.) The power of the Sharingan is judged through the number of tomoe in the eye, known as the "tomoe seal". It is not unheard of for a Sharingan user to have different amounts of tomoe in each eye. For example, Sasuke's Sharingan initially had two tomoe in one eye and one in the other. Upon his first regular activation of it, it had evolved to two tomoe in each eye. He evolved it to three in each eye during his battle with Naruto at the Valley of the End. A fully-matured Sharingan has three tomoe in each eye.
It is possible to transplant Sharingan eyes from one person to another, as occurred with Kakashi and his deceased comrade Obito Uchiha. However, transplanted eyes do not work as well in a non-Uchiha body, causing more strain on the user, as is the case with Kakashi – extended use of his Sharingan will cause him to collapse. Uchiha clan members are not burdened with this weakness; while activation of the Sharingan does consume chakra, the drain is so small as to be almost insignificant. Itachi in particular seems to have no trouble keeping his Sharingan activated near-constantly.
Characters who currently possess the Sharingan include Sasuke Uchiha, Itachi Uchiha, and Kakashi Hatake. Kakashi's eye was given to him by Obito Uchiha, one of his teammates in his original three-man ninja team. Obito developed it in a battle against a camouflaging Rock shinobi. During this battle, Kakashi lost his left eye when he was attacked, hence his scar. Near the end of the battle, Obito's right side was crushed under a giant rock, and as his last act Obito had Rin, a medical ninja, remove his left eye and implant it in Kakashi's empty eye socket, thus allowing Kakashi to use the Sharingan even though he does not have Uchiha blood. This is also why only his left eye is a Sharingan eye.
Mangekyo Sharingan
The Mangekyo Sharingan (万華鏡写輪眼, Mangekyō Sharingan?, literally "Kaleidoscope Copy Wheel Eye") is a heightened form of Sharingan. The Mangekyo Sharingan is distinguished from a normal Sharingan through its appearance, which changes the form of the tomoe seal. However, unlike the Sharingan, it may have a different appearance between the users, as Kakashi's version is significantly different than Itachi's. Those who have the potential to obtain it must make a great sacrifice in order to obtain it – according to Itachi, they must kill their closest friend. Itachi does in fact do this to obtain his version, but Kakashi has noted that everyone he cared about had died long before the start of the series, so how he developed his own variant is unknown. It has also been implied in the manga that use of the Mangekyo Sharingan may deteriorate the user's normal eyesight.
In the long history of the Uchiha clan, only a few have been able to obtain the Mangekyo Sharingan. At present, there are only two people who can use the Mangekyo Sharingan, Itachi being one and Kakashi being the other. According to Itachi, if his younger brother Sasuke obtained it, the number of people who could handle the Mangekyo Sharingan (including himself) would be three. Itachi's statement may suggest that there is (or was at that time) another Mangekyo Sharingan user somewhere; however, Itachi uses the verb atsukau (扱う) which means "to handle" or "to deal with", which could also mean that there are only three people left who are capable of acquiring the Mangekyo Sharingan. Given that Itachi had just killed every other member of the Uchiha clan, this statement could simply be taken as a matter of fact: Kakashi, Sasuke, and Itachi were the only known characters left alive with Sharingan eyes, so no one else had the potential to obtain it.

Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan
Itachi Uchiha gained the Mangekyo Sharingan by killing his best friend, Shisui Uchiha. With the Mangekyo Sharingan, Itachi is able to use the two most powerful jutsu of the Uchiha clan, Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu of unrivaled power and effectiveness, and Amaterasu, a ninjutsu capable of burning through even the strongest of materials.
Kakashi's Mangekyo Sharingan
Kakashi Hatake developed his own version of the Mangekyo Sharingan during the timeskip. Unlike Itachi's version, which is used to destroy a target, Kakashi uses his to create a localized interdimensional space-time warp, allowing him to target any object and send it to another dimension, achieving the same result. Kakashi used this new jutsu to warp a segment of Deidara's right arm into a different dimension. He immediately aimed at Deidara's head for a second attack, but missed. He subsequently uses it again in Chapter 278 to counter Deidara's ultimate move, which would otherwise level the entire forest they were fighting in. The attack requires considerable effort to aim precisely and appears to leave Kakashi's chakra significantly drained; he collapses after using the technique three times (compared to his other original move, Lightning Blade, which he can use four times a day).
The appearance of the pupil and tomoe in Kakashi's Mangekyo Sharingan differ from that of Itachi's; Kakashi's looks more like a pinwheel. Before this was shown, it was thought that one had to kill their best friend to acquire the Mangekyo Sharingan. This clearly isn't the case with Kakashi, who stated long before developing his Mangekyo Sharingan that everyone close to him was already dead. The only known now-deceased person that could be described as his "closest friend" was Obito, who died shortly after giving Kakashi his Sharingan eye. While Kakashi may have felt responsible for Obito's death at the time, he certainly didn't kill Obito himself, and it wouldn't explain why it took him so many years to obtain the Mangekyo Sharingan. Thus, the means behind its development and the actual meaning of the "requirement" are currently unknown.
Shikotsumyaku
Shikotsumyaku (死骨脈, Shikotsumyaku? literally "Dead Bone Pulse")2 is the kekkei genkai of the extinct Kaguya clan, which gave them the frightening ability to manipulate their own skeletal structure. They had free control over the cells responsible for bone growth and replacement, allowing them to manipulate their bones at will. They could protrude their bones out through their skin, change their bone density, and could even completely regenerate a lost bone. All this makes their bodies virtually indestructible, and any point of contact on the body could become as sharp as a spear tip, giving them a nearly perfect defense. The Kaguya clan utilizes this ability in their many sword dances, named after flowers or plants, usually creating a variety of bone weapons that were used in conjunction with powerful and graceful taijutsu movements. The ability seems to be rare amongst the clan members, as Kimimaro Kaguya was the only one to exhibit it out of his entire clan.
Souma no Kou
Sakon and Ukon of the Sound Four have the ability to unify some or all of one's body with the other's body with Souma no Kou ("Attack of an Evil Spirit Pair"). Typically, Ukon is dormant in Sakon's body, with his head protruding from the back of Sakon's neck. In heated battles, Ukon can lend his arms or legs (literally) to add force to Sakon's physical attacks, and even split completely into two bodies. They can also merge with an opponent's body with Parasite Demon Demolition Technique, gradually killing their new host. The brothers can switch places if need be, but Ukon notes that it is not something he is used to and thus makes them weaker.
Possible kekkei genkai
Exploding Clay
Deidara possesses mouths in the palms of his hands, which can chew up clay and sculpt it into a number of artistic, and usually explosive, forms, thus the name "exploding clay". Deidara can create clay and make the clay explode by saying "Katsu" (喝, "Katsu"?). It's unclear if this is a kekkei genkai, or merely a secret technique akin to Kidomaru's six arms.
Iron Sand
The Third Kazekage had a special genetic trait that allowed him to turn the chakra he molded into magnetic forces. This ability allowed him to create his Iron Sand, based on the jutsu used by the previous host of Shukaku. This ability was "inherited," and likely made more deadly through the addition of poison, by Sasori in his Kazekage puppet. It is unknown if this was a kekkei genkai, or wholly unique to the Third, similar to the First Hokage's ability to perform Mokuton jutsu.
Notes
It should be noted that there have been some techniques shown in the anime and manga that have not been explicitly labeled a bloodline limit. It should be assumed that unless explicitly stated, these abilities are not bloodline limits; rather, they are just specialized techniques that a person/clan developed and possibly, in the case of a clan, passes on. A good example is Naruto, who is a container of the demon fox; his ability to summon a certain degree of power from within, increasing his physical strength and chakra capacity, are granted to him because he alone has access to the demon fox's chakra sealed within him. A requirement of a bloodline limit, on the other hand, is that it is genetically passed on from parent to child within a specific group of individuals or clan. Although certain techniques may be exclusive to a clan because they are a well-kept secret, such as the Aburame clan's ability to control insects or the Akimichi clan's multi-size techniques, they do not qualify as bloodline limits because they could be learned by others outside the clan.
According to the official data books, Kidomaru's web abilities and the Aburame clan's ability to control bugs are not bloodline limits, but are in fact secret clan techniques.

Since the Mangekyo Sharingan is necessary to activate this jutsu, not many have learned it; therefore, the specific details of this jutsu are as yet unrevealed. Not surprisingly, it appears to use a large amount of chakra, as Itachi had to rest after using both it and Tsukuyomi in succession.

Like any transformation, the jutsu can be broken by identifying and attacking the animal, thus dispelling the transformation. This jutsu is often followed by the Double Piercing Fang.
Black Secret Technique Machine One Shot

To perform this jutsu, Kankuro's opponent must be trapped in the torso of Kuroari. After this is accomplished, Karasu separates into about eight components, each with a sharp blade. Kankuro guides the separate pieces into slits in Kuroari's torso, impaling the victim inside. The name of this secret technique is a play on a popular Japanese toy "Kurohige Kiki Ippatsu", known in America as "Pop-Up Pirate," in which the goal of the toy is to stick little plastic swords into a barrel to make the pirate in the center jump out. In the second Naruto movie, Kuroari can do this technique alone using Black Secret Technique Machine Two Shot.
Blade of Wind

Body Flicker Technique

This jutsu is a high-speed movement technique, allowing a ninja to move short distances at an almost untraceable speed. To an observer, it appears as if the user has teleported. A puff of smoke is occasionally used to disguise the user's movements. It is accomplished by using chakra to temporarily boost the user's reflexes. The amount of chakra required depends on the overall distance between the user and their intended destination. Shisui Uchiha, one of the most talented Uchiha, was feared as "Shisui of the Body Flicker" ("Shunshin no Shisui"), likely referring to this technique.
The Body Flicker technique has various variations among the different hidden villages, all of which involve some extra element aside from the movement itself. The extra element is usually some sort of substance used to distract the opponent, such as leaves or sand. Gaara, for instance, uses the "Sand Body Flicker" (砂瞬身, Suna-Shunshin?), which uses sand to cover his movements. Other varieties include the "Mist Body Flicker" (霧瞬身, Kiri-Shunshin?), "Water Body Flicker" (水瞬身, Mizu-Shunshin?), and "Leaf Body Flicker" (木ノ葉瞬身, Konoha-Shunshin?).
Body Replacement Technique
Name: Kawarimi no Jutsu, 変わり身の術, literally "Body Replacement Technique", "Change of Body Technique", "Change of Stance Technique", or "Replacement Technique", English TV "Replacement Jutsu" or "Substitution Jutsu"

This jutsu lets the user quickly switch places with another nearby object, such as a plant (normally a section of a log), an animal, or even another person within reach, leaving the opponent open to a counter-attack. Explosive tags can be attached to the replacement for an added surprise, which Sasuke has done twice in the anime. Fundamentally, all ninja know this technique.
The anime has a number of other objects being used for this jutsu, such as a boulder, mud, a scarecrow, and even a large rolled-up carpet. These items are usually nowhere in sight, suggesting that they are merely gags meant to lighten up the situation and not an actual part of the jutsu. Additionally, the normal practice of switching places with a section of log is done in several places that have no such thing anywhere nearby.
This technique is sometimes referred to as the Art of Projection ("Utsusemi no Jutsu") in other manga and anime series.
Bug Clone Technique

This jutsu allows the user to absorb the physical and spiritual energy of an opponent. The user doesn't have to actually touch the opponent, since it is also possible to use it through other media, as Jirobo did with his Earth Release Barrier: Dungeon Chamber of Nothingness. The only necessary condition is some medium through which chakra can be channeled.
The Chakra Absorption Technique is not truly considered a jutsu since it has never been given an entry in any of the databooks, but more of a special ability; however, it is not considered a kekkei genkai ability, either.
Cloak of Invisibility Technique
Name: Kakuremino no Jutsu, 隠れ蓑の術, literally "Cloak of Invisibility Technique"

This jutsu allows a ninja to take a cloak or a piece of cloth and blend into an object, making them invisible. Konohamaru uses this technique constantly in the beginning of the Naruto series to try and fool Naruto Uzumaki, but uses poor disguises (square rocks with eyeholes, cloaks that are incorrectly patterned or the wrong way round, or simply not covering himself completely), thus betraying the illusion. In the anime, Naruto has been somewhat practical at using this jutsu a couple of times.
Clone Great Explosion

Combination Transformation

Unfortunately, this technique has a drawback; using it speeds up cell division, significantly shortening her life span.
Cutting Whirlwind Technique

Dead Soul Technique

Using his kekkei genkai, Haku can create a dome of twenty-one mirrors made out of ice to trap an opponent. Twelve remain at ground level, eight are placed above the first twelve and angled toward the ground, and the final mirror is above the rest and facing the ground. Haku can then enter one of the mirrors and travel between them at an incredible speed; in fact, the time in transit is almost instantaneous. During transit, Haku can throw needles while remaining virtually unassailable. If the mirror Haku is currently in is shattered, he can leap out of one of the fragments and continue his attack. Though they are made from ice, they are pressured with enough chakra to resist fire almost completely (one of Sasuke's fire jutsu was barely able to make the rimfrost melt). While inside the mirrors, Haku is moving so fast that the outside world appears to move in slow motion. The technique requires a large amount of chakra to maintain, so Haku's movement becomes progressively slower the longer he maintains the mirrors.
Desert Coffin

This jutsu uses sand to grab the opponent and cover their entire body. This skill is primarily utilized for rendering an opponent immobile, but can kill the opponent by suffocation or by being followed with the Desert Funeral, which crushes them.
It should be noted that Gaara crushed Rock Lee's left arm and leg with just Desert Coffin during their battle in the Chunin Exams, perhaps implying that Desert Coffin itself has its own crushing effect. However, Lee's condition at the time may have had something to do with it. Since this jutsu uses enough force to prevent all but the strongest opponents from moving, Lee's injured body may not have been able to withstand the force of the sand. Alternatively, he may simply have forgotten to announce the follow-up attack. This last theory is reinforced by the fact that Gaara made the hand motion (a fist closing) he always makes when using Desert Funeral.
Desert Funeral

The sheer amount of oil Gamabunta is capable of spitting allows this jutsu to reach further and cover a much larger area than any other fire jutsu.
Flapping One Thousand Birds

Using the power gained through the level 2 form of his Cursed Seal of Heaven, the Chidori that Sasuke Uchiha was taught to use as a "blade" to protect his comrades is warped into a dark version of itself that is used to sever his ties with them. In contrast to the usual chirping of birds that the Chidori is known for, this technique emits a noise much like that of a large number of birds taking flight. Its power far surpasses that of the normal Chidori.
Flying Thunder God Technique

This jutsu was created by the Fourth Hokage and the reason behind his nickname, "The Yellow Flash of Konoha" (木ノ葉の黄色い閃光, "Konoha no Kiiroi Senkō"). It allows the user to move over large distances with ultra-high speed. Although it is often compared with the Body Flicker Technique, the speed of this jutsu is much greater. In principal, it is similar to the Summoning Technique, but instead sends the user somewhere rather than bringing something to them.
To activate this jutsu, the user needs a special seal or "jutsu formula" (術式, Jutsu-shiki?) to mark the destination. After this is done, the user can almost instantaneously transport himself to that location. The Fourth applied the formula in advance to weapons such as kunai. It is also possible to leave a formula in an area touched by the user.
This technique is the reason Konoha came out victorious in the Iwa-Konoha Ninja War. After having his subordinates toss marked kunai randomly into the enemy ranks, the Fourth used the technique to appear within their ranks and slaughter them one by one before they could even react.
The Japanese name Hiraishin is also the phonic of the Japanese word 避雷針, which means lightning rod; this may explain why the Fourth needed a seal or formula for this to work.
Four Legs Technique

In addition to the outside barrier, the Sound Four were also able to create an additional inner barrier around themselves, thus ensuring that the barrier would never be unwillingly broken. Those using the technique seem to be able to touch the barrier with no problem.

Naruto uses a modified form of this technique in episode 193 when he transforms into dozens of clones of Sakura (still clothed) in order to confuse Rock Lee.
Haze Clone Technique

Unfortunately, this treatment's success rate isn't very high. This was used successfully on Neji Hyuga during the Sasuke Retrieval arc.

Additionally, creatures with enhanced senses of smell (insects or dogs) can pick up on the user's reduced scent. In the anime, Kabuto has been seen using this technique in the Forest of Death. Quite a few ninja in the filler arcs of the anime also know this technique.

When performed, this jutsu causes a seal (座, "seat") to appear on the user's hand. Yamato uses this to keep a tailed beast's power in check so long as the beast's chakra has not begun to leak out. In more extreme cases, he touches the seal mark to someone "possessed" by a tailed beast and a stream of chakra connects them, forcing the beast's chakra to recede. In both forms, an open structure of wooden columns grows around the target. Alternatively, several wooden dragons will burst from the ground and devour the chakra of the tailed beast, achieving the same result. This technique is enhanced by the First Hokage's highly valuable crystal necklace, though the role it plays is unclear.

This jutsu, created by Sasori, allows the puppeteer to turn a living human into a puppet. First, the entrails are removed. Then, once the skin has been peeled off, the user cleanses them and draws out all of the blood. Once the bodies are preserved so they do not decompose, various gadgets are then installed inside of them. Because the puppet was once human, it can still use chakra. The puppet will maintain the same amount of chakra as its held when it was alive. If the original ninja had any kekkei genkai or other blood-based traits, like the Third Kazekage's Iron Sand, the puppet can retain those abilities as well.

This jutsu was created by the Third Kazekage based on techniques used by one of the previous hosts of Shukaku. By converting his chakra into magnetic forces, the Third Kazekage could mold iron powder into any shape he desired.
After the Third Kazekage was turned into a puppet by Sasori, the latter was able to use his Iron Sand ability in much the same manner. The Iron Sand used by Sasori was also highly poisonous, which Sasori probably added himself.
Iron Sand Drizzle

Kusanagi Sword: Long Sword of the Heavens
Name: Kusanagi no Tsurugi: Kū no Tachi, 草薙の剣・空の太刀, literally "Kusanagi Sword: Long Sword of the Heavens", English "Grass Halberd/Long Sword: Death In One Cut"

This technique arms Orochimaru with the Kusanagi (草薙, "Grass Halberd") of Japanese legend. To retrieve it, Orochimaru opens his mouth and a snake comes out. The snake then opens its mouth and produces the Kusanagi. The sword can be produced either handle or blade-first, allowing Orochimaru to wield it from his mouth if necessary. The sword can cut through almost any object, its blade can extend to many times its normal length, and it can be controlled remotely by Orochimaru.
Sasuke also has a Kusanagi sword, which he amplifies with his One Thousand Birds Current. Sasuke's sword, however, is not the same legendary sword. Sasuke's Kusanagi resembles a black katana in a shirasaya (a wooden sheath designed to conceal or store a blade for a long time). Additionally, Sasuke carries his Kusanagi rather than summoning it, so he can draw the sword very quickly. Lastly, his Kusanagi doesn't stretch like the real version does.
In the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series, Orochimaru can summon more than one Kusanagi blade and control them using his chakra.

Last Absolute Defense: Shield of Shukaku

Using sand, Gaara can create a toy-like replica of Shukaku roughly twice his size. The replica is created with extreme pressure and the hardest minerals in the area combined with his chakra, making it virtually indestructible. Although this technique requires a lot of chakra, it does provide for a very powerful defense. The main drawback, however, is that the replica doesn't move, so Gaara's opponent could just walk around it. Gaara has to make sure his opponent either can't or won't move.
Leech All Creation: Attack Prevention Technique

Lightning Blade

This jutsu is an enhanced form of the One Thousand Birds, and has the same, albeit more powerful, effect. Kakashi is the only one able to use it, and it is named as such because he once cut a lightning bolt with it before it hit the ground. This jutsu requires a larger amount of chakra and better chakra control. This is exemplified in their respective appearances. Whereas One Thousand Birds creates a large mass of chakra in one hand that appears near-white, the Lightning Blade is considerably more concentrated and appears in the normal blue color of chakra. Kakashi can only use this technique four times in a given day.
After the timeskip, Kakashi is able to create a Lightning Blade in each hand to attack two targets in unison, similar to the Twin Lightning Blade introduced in Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2. Unlike its video game predecessor, however, Kakashi merely creates a Lightning Blade in each hand instead of splitting an existing one. He also demonstrates the ability to surround his own hand in electricity to increase the effectiveness of a chop. Doing so doesn't appear to be as stressful as the full technique, since he can do it in addition to his four-time limit.
Lightning Release: False Darkness

If repeated periodically, it basically grants the user immortality as long as the user can find new host bodies. Orochimaru can only perform this technique once every three years. It also seems that when the three years are almost over, he is forced to move into another host, as the previous one begins to reject him. This rejection may be due to Orochimaru's hosts being unable to contain his considerable power. Presumably, if he had a proper container, he could stay in the host for a full lifetime. The fact that he wants to prepare Sasuke Uchiha for the transfer before performing it seems to reinforce this.

Mind Body Disturbance Technique
Name: Shinranshin no Jutsu, 心乱身の術, literally "Mind Body Disturbance Technique"

This jutsu is a variation on the Mind Body Switch Technique. Instead of transferring the user's consciousness, this jutsu sends a spirit of confusion into a target, causing them to attack their allies. Although the target is aware of what they are doing, they are unable to stop themselves. For this particular jutsu, the user is able to stay in their own body, unlike its predecessor; however, the user must maintain the hand seal used to activate it. Ino has learned this jutsu in the anime, but has yet to display it in the manga.
Mind Body Switch Technique
Name: Shintenshin no Jutsu, 心転身の術, literally "Mind Body Switch Technique", Viz "Art of the Valentine", English TV "Ninja Art: Mind Transfer Jutsu"

This jutsu allows the user to send their mind into a target's body (even an animal's), supplanting the target's mind with their own. Though normally used as a spying jutsu, it can also be used in battle with several major drawbacks. First, the user's spirit travels slowly, making it easy to dodge. If the user misses their target, they are left helpless until their spirit returns to their body, which takes several minutes. Second, even if the technique does work, the user's ability to stay in an enemy's body is determined by how fatigued they are. The user can be forced out if facing a strong enough will (or two wills, in Sakura Haruno's case), are too tired, or if the target is in incredible pain. Finally, any damage the user suffers while possessing another is transferred to their original body. Therefore, if the target dies, so does the user.
Art of the Valentine, which is used along with Shintenshin no Jutsu in the Viz English manga, is not a literal translation of Shintenshin no Jutsu, although Shintenshin is a Japanese card game that literally means "Change of Heart".
Multi-Size Technique

This is a secret jutsu passed down in the Akimichi clan that expands the user's stomach. This jutsu increases the user's body size by using up the user's food energy, converting calories into chakra. Multiple Shadow Clone Technique
Name: Tajū Kage Bunshin no Jutsu, 多重影分身の術, literally "Multiple Shadow Clone Technique" or "Mass Shadow Replication Technique", English TV "Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu"

This jutsu is basically a massive version of the Shadow Clone Technique. Instead of a few clones, it creates a few hundred clones (or a number of equal grandeur). This is considered a forbidden technique, because it can potentially be dangerous to the person performing it, seeing as how all of the clones are given an equal amount of chakra directly from the user. Naruto learned the technique from the scroll of forbidden seals written by the First Hokage and used it to save Iruka from Mizuki. Few people are able to use this technique effectively, due to the large amount of chakra it consumes. This weakness does not apply to Naruto due to his demon fox chakra, which allows him to create upwards of 2,000 clones while maintaining a decent supply of chakra in each one. This technique is also used by Naruto to train quickly, since all the clones share their experiences with Naruto, but it causes extreme fatigue with repeated use.
Mystical Palm Technique

This jutsu is a multi-purpose medical technique used by medic-nin to heal wounds and perform surgery. For the former, the user concentrates chakra to their hand and applies it to a wound, speeding up cell regeneration. For the latter, the user focuses their chakra into a blade to make cuts where necessary. Because it is done with chakra, the user doesn't need to cut through their target's skin to reach muscles and organs. For this to be applied effectively in healing, a large amount of chakra is required. Using it to cut seems to be less chakra-intensive. This cutting aspect of this jutsu can also be used in combat, though it requires incredible precision on the user's part to be effective.

Needle Guardian

This jutsu is Kakashi's only original technique, though he now uses an S-ranked version known as the Lightning Blade. He created it around the time he was promoted to Jonin, and later taught it to Sasuke. This jutsu channels a large amount of chakra into the user's arm. The amount of chakra is so great that it becomes visible to the naked eye. The technique actually alters the nature of the user's chakra, effectively converting it into electricity. As a side effect of the conversion process, the large amount of chakra, and the speed at which the user moves, this technique makes a loud noise similar to many birds chirping, hence the name (if the user is not in motion, it merely makes an electric crackling sound). Once the technique is completed, the user charges forward and stabs their enemy with it. The amount of thrust combined with the large concentration of chakra allows the user to stab through almost anything; as such it is usually fatal to the enemy. This technique is classified as an assassination technique because of the speed at which it is performed, despite the loud noise it produces.
This jutsu has a major drawback, however. The speed at which the attack must be done, combined with the fact that the user must run in a straight line, causes a tunnel vision-like effect for the user. This allows their enemy to easily counter the attack, making it a potentially lethal move for the user. Though this drawback would seem to make learning the technique fairly pointless, Sasuke and Kakashi are able to avoid the drawback because of their Sharingan eyes, which take in every detail regardless of how fast the user is moving. As an additional drawback, the large amount of chakra required limits its use to a few times a day (two for Sasuke, four for Kakashi). Sasuke can manage one more than normal with the use of his cursed seal. Should the user attempt to go beyond their limit, all of their chakra will be drained and their very life force could go along with it, killing them. An additional problem, though not necessarily a debilitating one, is the fact that the large amount of chakra can also injure the user's hand if they put too much force into the attack. Sasuke does this while battling his brother, Itachi, causing some of the skin to peel from his hand and leaving it slightly smoldering after the attack was finished.
One Thousand Birds Current

A variation on a regular One Thousand Birds developed by Sasuke during his two-and-a-half year training with Orochimaru, this jutsu allows Sasuke to cover himself in electricity, instead of just concentrating it in his hand. The electricity can be channeled anywhere, allowing Sasuke to enhance his attacks with it. Because it is channeled throughout his entire body and not concentrated, the electricity will only cause temporary paralysis instead of killing an opponent. While this is not a problem in one-on-one battles, it does allow others to save their comrade if Sasuke is outnumbered. Sasuke can also channel the electricity through his Kusanagi sword, increasing its overall strength and cutting power.

Parasite Demon Demolition Technique

Poison Mist

Projection Technique

Using this jutsu, the user can project their voice from various points in a specific area in a manner similar to ventriloquism. The user does not need to speak to transmit the sound, so tracking them by sound is impossible. Those in the area where the voice is being projected at will hear a resonating echo, as well as a more ominous undertone.
Projection Technique is only known as a jutsu in the Naruto anime. It was first used in the Naruto manga by Zabuza Momochi and Orochimaru with no name. In addition, this technique has never been given an entry name in the databooks, which more than likely means it is more of a skill than a jutsu, much like walking up walls or walking on water using chakra.
Puppet Technique

This jutsu uses strings of chakra from the user's fingers to control puppets like marionettes. This skill is often prepared in coordination with the Body Replacement Technique so the user can quickly switch places with their puppet when necessary. Another useful quality of this skill is the fact that the puppet can take the form of another person, usually its user, allowing the user to trick their enemy into thinking they're fighting a living person.
Any number of chakra strings can be used to control a puppet, but users with more skill using the technique can use fewer strings per puppet. Both Chiyo and Sasori demonstrated the ability to control entire puppets perfectly using just one string. While most puppeteers would normally be able to control ten puppets at most (one per finger), Sasori's self-modification allowed him to control up to one hundred puppets at a time.
Apart from being used to control marionettes, the chakra strings can be attached to other objects, allowing the user to control, or at the very least disrupt, other things. In one instance, Kankuro uses chakra strings to trip Naruto Uzumaki when they first meet. In another, Chiyo uses chakra strings to control Sakura Haruno like a puppet.

Quicksand in the Style of a Waterfall

This appears to be the only one of Gaara's moves that requires hand seals, and in practice is virtually unavoidable. Once completed, it can cover an entire forest in sand.

Red Secret Technique: Performance of a Hundred Puppets

This jutsu creates a clone of Gaara out of sand. Perhaps the most versatile of all clones, this variant does not disperse when hit. When attacked, the affected area turns back into sand and snags the opponent. Major damage must be caused to actually disperse the clone (destroying its head, for instance); otherwise, it can simply reform.
While Gaara's functional sand clone is quite obviously a clone, Gaara can create non-functional clones that look just like him. These clones, however, are simply hollow shells.
Sand Drizzle

This is simply a Transformation Technique used to transform the user into a beautiful, nude woman (or a woman in a bathing suit, as seen in episode 177 and the Naruto video games). Naruto uses it to distract his instructors, sometimes leading to an exaggerated nosebleed by the victim, and it is indeed annoyingly effective; even the Third Hokage swooned when Naruto used it on him. Naruto was forced to use this jutsu in order to receive training from Jiraiya.
A variant of this technique is the Harem Technique, which uses varying numbers of shadow clones in combination with the technique to produce multiple clones of a nude woman.
Shadow Clone Technique

Similar to the Clone Technique, this jutsu creates clones of the user. Unlike the Clone Technique, these clones are actual copies, not illusions. The user's chakra is evenly distributed among every clone, giving each clone an equal fraction of the user's overall power. The clones are capable of performing jutsu on their own and can even bleed, but will usually disperse after one or two solid blows. Unlike other clones, they can't be detected by the Byakugan because the clones have the exact same amount of chakra and aren't made from any other substance, making them indistinguishable from the actual person. Sasuke Uchiha claims that the Sharingan can tell the difference during his battle with Naruto at the Valley of the End.
Any experience the clones gain during their existence is transferred to the user once they are dispersed. This makes the technique ideal for spying, since the user can simply send a clone to spy on a target, then have the clone disperse itself without returning to pass the information back to the user. It's also useful for training purposes, since the total amount of experience the user gains is multiplied by the total number of clones being used to train. Using it in this manner is far more difficult, however, since a large number of clones are needed to make a significant difference in the training time. It's unclear if other types of clones possess this advantage.
This technique is considered dangerous because of the manner in which the clones are created. Because the user divides their chakra among the clones, the user could potentially use up all their chakra fairly quickly if the user is low on chakra or makes too many clones, such as Naruto does with Multiple Shadow Clone Technique, this jutsu's enhanced (and forbidden) form. Naruto is able to use this technique to the extremes that he does because of his tailed beast, the nine-tailed demon fox, which gives him an abnormally high chakra level. Even without the demon fox's chakra, Naruto can make quite a few clones, but nowhere near on the level he can when he has access to the demon fox's chakra. The technique can also be dangerous if the user is injured or has some otherwise debilitating physical condition at the time of the cloning, since all of the clones will be created in roughly the same state.
Shadow Imitation Technique

The signature move of the Nara family, this jutsu allows the user to control their own shadow and merge it with their opponent's shadow, combining them. This links the movements of the user with the target; the target is subsequently forced to make any movement the user makes. It is an extremely versatile technique, as the user can contract and change the shape of their shadow, potentially grabbing multiple targets at once. The degree to which the user's shadow can be stretched is limited by its total surface area. Using the shadows of other objects, the user can extend their shadow beyond its normal range.
The amount of time for which an opponent can be held is limited by the user's chakra, since the user must constantly maintain the jutsu. The jutsu is also more difficult to maintain at greater ranges or for multiple opponents, since the user's shadow must be stretched constantly. At closer ranges, it requires considerably less effort on the user's part. Additionally, the target can force their way free with enough effort, though the amount of effort required to do so is considerable.
The Shadow Imitation Technique used to be called the Shadow Bind Technique, suggesting that the imitation aspect was devised later on and that the original technique could only hold targets in place. Shikaku uses the former name of the technique when performing it.
Shadow Neck Bind Technique

Shadow Shuriken Technique

When he used it, he referred to the technique as "Wind Demon Shuriken, Shadow Windmill", which in the English version was dubbed as "Demon Wind Shuriken, Windmill of Shadows". His version used a transformed Naruto as the second shuriken, creating an additional surprise attack after Zabuza avoided the first.
In the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja series, Naruto employs the above jutsu on his own.
Shadow Summoning Technique

Shapeshifting Technique

This jutsu is used to perfectly clone a willing target by sacrificing another person. To perform the jutsu, the intended target must give up a fair portion of their chakra to create the duplicate (in its debut, the leader asked for thirty percent), after which the sacrificial body morphs into an exact clone of the target. The target is so perfectly cloned that every aspect of them will be copied, even kekkei genkai and weapons the target is carrying. The clone's abilities are proportionate to, and limited by, the amount of chakra given to it by the original. This makes the clone unable to use techniques that require large amounts of chakra to perform. The clone can either act autonomously or be controlled by the original. Once the sacrificial body dies, the Shapeshifting Technique will end and the person used will be revealed.
Shield of Chakra

It can be defeated by avoiding it completely with extremely high-speed attacks, or merely overcoming the shield with incredible brute force. When Gaara uses the shield to create a defensive sphere, the sand can also form spikes to impale opponents who approach.

This can also be used to make the user's body more malleable and snakelike. Orochimaru can do this without surgical modification thanks to his various forbidden jutsu. In addition, his version allows him to stretch his body parts well beyond their normal length.
Spider Bind

If Kidomaru is in enemy territory and needs to rest while still remaining on guard, he can lay spider thread throughout the surrounding area. Most ninja will recognize the thread as common spider web; however, this thread runs all the way back to a finger on Kidomaru's hand. Slight movement against a webbing thread will pull it all the way back to Kidomaru's finger and alert him to the enemy's presence.

The Spiraling Sphere is a technique invented by the Fourth Hokage after three years of development. It requires a very high level of chakra control. The Spiraling Sphere incorporates the chakra control learned from the tree-climbing and water-walking exercises to create a ball of concentrated, spinning chakra in the user's hand that is slightly larger than a baseball. For training purposes, teaching the technique is broken into three steps. First, the user has to learn to pop a water balloon by spinning the water inside in multiple directions with their chakra. Second, they do the same with a solid rubber ball. Since the rubber is thicker and air is completely different from water, it forces the user to rely mostly on denser chakra to break it. Finally, the user has to form a complete Spiraling Sphere by combining what they learned in the previous two steps. A regular balloon is often used to act as the shell. In Part II, Naruto develops an improved version known as the Great Ball Spiraling Sphere.
The Spiraling Sphere requires no hand seals to perform, instead relying entirely on the chakra control of the user. Once the user creates a stable Spiraling Sphere, however, it becomes self-sustaining, so the user does not need to provide any more chakra after forming it. The force of the spinning chakra grinds into whatever it touches, causing major damage. The user can also release the spinning chakra, creating a violent explosive force at the point of contact. The one drawback of the Spiraling Sphere, if it can be considered as such, is that it requires great chakra control. Of course, this will not be a drawback if the user has learned the technique, because they already possess the necessary chakra control. It can be a problem if some force is disrupting the user's ability to mold chakra. Unlike the One Thousand Birds, there is no definite limit to the amount of times this technique can be used in a day. Because it uses far less chakra in comparison, it doesn't carry the same over-use risk as the One Thousand Birds, either.
Despite the Spiraling Sphere being a one-handed technique, Naruto actually uses three or more hands to form it (his one hand holds and spins the chakra while any number of clones create a shell with their hands) in the first part of the series due to his poor chakra control (which would require spinning it several directions), but in the second part of the series has been shown to be capable of making a one-handed Spiraling Sphere. When Naruto accesses his tailed transformation states, he can form the Spiraling Sphere with one hand by using demon fox chakra to form the shell, which likely provides better control and power. It also forms irregularly and grows as it mixes with the demon fox's chakra, giving it a purple color.
The anime makes light of the Spiraling Sphere by making it an "all-purpose jutsu". During episode 168, Naruto uses it to mix the ingredients for noodles quickly and evenly. In episode 177, Jiraiya uses it to create a path through a maze of houses, in order to see through everything behind the walls (inadvertently blasting through a woman's bathroom). While outrunning some ninja, Jiraiya uses it to as a propeller for a boat; in this episode, Naruto even commented that it had become a "cheap trick", even though he himself uses it at Jiraiya's insistence. In episode 194 of the anime, Naruto actually throws a Spiraling Sphere to free himself and his friends from a mansion. The last event is a significant deviation on the standard Spiraling Sphere, since it is normally hand-held, and may not be canon since these are filler episodes. He does, however, do something similar when first using the technique against Kabuto.
Kakashi explains after the timeskip that the Spiraling Sphere is an incomplete technique, since the Fourth Hokage originally planned on combining his own nature manipulation with it. Such a feat, however, proved too difficult for both him and Kakashi. Naruto, however, is capable of doing so, albeit after much training and with two clones assisting him. Since his chakra is wind-based, his version is known as Wind Release: Spiraling Sphere.

This forbidden summoning technique allows the user to revive the dead. The user must first sacrifice a living human in order to tie the deceased person's soul to the world (unlike the normal summoning technique, which only requires some of the user's blood). The sacrificed body is then surrounded with dirt and dust that compacts into the shape of the summoned soul's original body. The resurrected person then rises from the ground in a wooden coffin. At first, the person appears pale and dirty, as most undead are portrayed. The user has to restore their appearance through a special seal.
When revived, the person remembers everything they once did. Because of this, the revived person is not completely under the user's control. With the same seal that restores the revived person's appearance, their personality can be erased, thus putting them under the user's complete control. The summoned person can't be killed and any damage to them regenerates. The soul must be removed from the body in order to kill the resurrected person. This technique can be used to summon multiple people at once, depending on the amount of sacrifices and the chakra level of the user.
Orochimaru uses this technique during his battle with the Third Hokage in the Invasion of Konoha arc to summon the First and Second Hokages. He had also intended to summon someone else, but the Third prevented the final summon. In the anime, the coffin partially rises from the ground, and the symbol on it suggests that the Fourth Hokage was the final summon. In the manga, the Third stops the final summon before it can even be attempted, so the occupant of the coffin is left more ambiguous.

This jutsu encloses the surrounding area with the esophagus of a great, fire-breathing toad from Mount Myoboku: Rock Lodging (妙木山・岩宿, Myōboku-san: Iwayado?). Jiraiya can then control the stomach, causing it to expand, contract, or grow in whatever direction he wishes. In a filler arc, Jiraiya uses a variation of this jutsu when he summons an able-bodied toad's stomach to protect himself and Naruto from Kagero's Ephemeral Vengeance.
When first used, Jiraiya claimed that no one had ever escaped from this jutsu. Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki manage to escape, however. Itachi uses his Amaterasu to burn through the stomach.
In the video games, parts of the stomach also spew fire, which fits with Jiraiya's description of the toad the esophagus originates from.

The basic form of all summoning techniques, this jutsu uses a contract, hand seals, and the user's blood to summon an animal from another dimension. As an alternative to the normal hand seals, the same contract that appears on the ground during the summoning can be drawn by hand and activated, producing the same result. The type of animal summoned is determined by the contract. The blood is used as a signature to make the contract, which can be written on a scroll or tattoo, valid. Once summoned, the animal can perform a task or help the user in battle.
The summon usually is subservient to the summoner; however, the more powerful summons, such as Gamabunta and Manda, demand respect and loyalty from their summoners. Manda even demands hundreds of live human sacrifices.
Super Beasts Imitation Picture

Besides its use for peeping, it is also very useful for Jiraiya's espionage activities. When he's about to be caught, this jutsu allows him to escape an area without a trace.

In Naruto: Narutimate Hero 3, when Anko performs this jutsu, two summoned snakes wrap themselves around her and her victim and lock themselves in that position by biting each others' necks. The snakes then detonate, causing major damage to Anko's opponent. For gameplay reasons, however, Anko is left unharmed.

This jutsu is Naruto's version of Sasuke Uchiha's Lion Combo, which he uses to defeat Kiba Inuzuka in the Chunin exam. (Kakashi comments on the obvious similarities between the two, glad that Naruto at least bothered to change the name, somewhat.) Naruto uses his Shadow Clone Technique to make up for his lack of speed. He makes four clones, which shout "U!" "Zu!" "Ma!" "Ki!" as they kick the opponent into the air, and the real Naruto finishes the combo with "Naruto Rendan!" and a kick from above. In the English dub, the corresponding shouts are "Na", "Ru", "To", "Uzumaki Barrage!" On each occasion Naruto has used this technique, he has performed it differently. Though Naruto's version of the technique is no more effective than Sasuke's, his is ranked higher due to his use of shadow clones.

This jutsu can't be performed without a sufficiently large body of water to supply the water for it. Neji Hyuga has been able to use his ability to release chakra from all of his pressure points to disrupt the flow of chakra inside the prison and break free. Despite the fact that the prison is made up entirely out of water, and the target is unable to move while within it, the target is still able to breathe.

It has to be used against the opponent at point-blank range to work. When chided about this fact, Naruto quips that "it's amazing if it hits," implying that despite its weaknesses the technique is actually quite damaging.
