The Big Rat

The Big Rat flicked his gaze from Nereida to Owlheart before finally settling on Russet Fawn.

“Big Rat likes this gift,” he says. “Big Rat can’t make things grow and none of Big Rats minions have pretty green marks like a noul. Not yet.”

The rat turns his heft body and disappears back to his den, rummaging noisily through what sounds like bits of metal. Finally, the rat reappears, clutching a small golden seed in one foot. He places it gingerly on the forest floor and pokes it toward Russet Fawn. The seed is dry and old, but it’s not something you’ve seen around Vykeli before.

“You make this grow, Big Rat will give you the key.”

Quote:
It looks like you’re going to have to use some of your magic, Russet Fawn!

Everyone here may also roll 2d6 + WIT to find out exactly what this seed is.

The Waterfall

Sweetpea and Havoc arrive on the scene! With them, most of the noulicorns are together again.

The beast grins at Indira as she barks at her, her muscles tense but too sore and injured to do much more than leer hungrily at the noulicorns.

“If I tell them I have more meals, perhaps,” the beast laughs, a high pitched cackling noise. She doesn’t seem perturbed by the idea of helping the noulicorns through the door. She limps toward the fall and ducks her head beneath the water, growling,” I can certainly try.”

The beast clears her throat and speaks. “I’m one of you and I’ve brought morsels! Open the door, please!”

Well…. At least she has manners?

Quote:
We’ve gotta get through that door!

Help the Beastie convince the others to open up
By rolling 2d6 + CHARM
You’ll need a roll of 10+ to convince them!

Try to knock down the door!
It’s old and rusted, and surely with so many noulicorns around you might be able to bust it open.
Roll 2d6 + BODY to force your way through the door!
Collectively, the group needs 4 full successes or 8 partial successes to knock the door down, if this is the route you choose.

Search for the missing gear!
Cinder discovered there’s a piece missing from the mechanism on the door. If you find it, that might be the key to opening the door.
Roll 2d6 + WIT to search for clues as to where the gear went!

Indira used charm force of personality
___________________

The smaller of the two does certainly had a lot to say. Indira's flicked an ear, battling her desire to remind the doe why this wasn't the time for pleasantries. All she managed to get out was "Yes, I'm Indira."

The beast's laugh sent shivers down her spine. It didn't surprise Indira that the monster could talk. Really, this was possibly the least surprising moment of the entire day. What did surprise her was its willingness to lope towards the door, and seemingly go along with her plan. Surely this was too easy.

What idiots had imagined having a creature like this roaming Homewood was a good idea? Let alone multiples. She couldn't help but shake her head.

Cinder's revelation about the missing gear hadn't stuck with her much. Right until the moment she set off the follow after the monster. What if the door couldn't be opened, even from the inside without it? What would happen then. "I really wish we had the gear..." Her ears flattened. But wishes didn't get you anything. Only action.

She loped off after the beast, not wanting to let it get out of sight. She really didn't know what it was capable of, besides murder. She did her best to let out a convincing groan, but truly Indira was not an actor. She hoped some of the other noulicorns by the lake would go along with her plan, but she also tempered her expectations.

Arriving & leaving for the gear RIP

Havoc arrived huffing from the run to keep up with the faery and the determined Sweetpea. The winged familiar had darted behind the waterfall, and they had followed, even though he saw the battered beast was there too. He stood a moment, catching his breath as he took in the scene and the group gathered near a door like thing in the wall. It had more of those rusty gear bits like the one he saw earlier...suddenly he perked up, ears forward. A doe, the one the familiar went to so it must be this 'Indira', was saying something about a missing gear?

"Oh ...hey! I saw a thing like that just back there by the river. Like those." Havoc nodded toward the door mechanisms. He had known all along the metal thing might be important! Ok he hadn't. Immediately he felt dumb having not investigated it more or tried to bring it along. Oops But he could redeem himself and get it!

"I'll go get it!" He said and turned back the way they had come. Truthfully, not hanging out with the beast was also a great bonus. He was really getting his cardio in today, he thought as he took off back along the lake then down the river for the gear thing as fast as he could. Hope they don't get eaten before I get back, he worried as he galloped, still never got that pink one's name... (#priorities)

Revive the Seed!

___________________

Russet Fawn looked at the Big tat as he vanished back into the nest after accepting her offer of a use of her Magic. While she was kind of hoping to use it when it was really needed, but this was one of those times she concluded. She waited as the rat came back clutching a golden seed. As he laid it at on the ground, she stepped forward and lowered her head. She eyed the rat for a moment before giving the seed a sniff. After a couple seconds she looked back towards the Jack Hop.

"Talltale?" She said as the Jack Hop popped out of his glare and glanced towards the seed.

"Right!" he said before turning to one of the packs.

Pulling out a thing glass vial of water, he held it in his mouth and hopped down. Pulling the quark stopper he poured the water over the seed to allow it to soak up the liquid. When that was finished, he replaced the vial back to where he had gotten it. She could smell the age on the seed and the strangeness of it. Awaiting for talltale to return, she looked at the Big rat.

"Where did you acquire this seed? It smells of far away, besides being very old." Fawn said as the Jack Hop appeared back before her.

Picking the soaked seed in his paws, he put his back to the Big Rat, though held the seed up as high as he could. This was something that the two did, Talltale was always in charge of the seed when Fawn was doing her magic. Afterwards he was always the one to plant it in a pre-dug hole. For this, he didn't know where it was to be planted, but for the most part he could hold it while Fawn did her thing.

Reaching down into herself, Fawn's horn started to give off a soft green glow. Her shoulder started to itch as her marking gave off the same green shine as she reached forward and placed her horn on the seed. Exhaling she pushed her magic into the seed. Letting it wash over the shell before there is a small 'pop' as green started to appear from its top. That small bit of green slowly grew until a couple small leaves started to grow.

Stepping back from the seed as it was well on its way to growing, roots had started to sprout from its base and curl like white hairs as it was. Shaking her head, clearing the haze that came from using her magic, she glanced at the Big Rat as Talltale turned to offer the sprouted seed to him. Her task was done and she was looking for the answers to her questions about the seed.

At the moment she had forgotten that she was here with two others, but a quick look around she remembered. Stepping backwards a little to be with Nereida and Owlheart, she watched the Big Rat, hoping that they would be the end of it all and they could hurry on and help their companions.... Friends was a stretch...

Sweetpea tries to act?
9 + 1 = 10

Sweetpea arrived with Havoc and only had a few moments to take in what was happening. She hated that she kept running into this beast, but at least they'd somehow convinced it to help?

Was it helping if they were also bringing it to reinforcements? Probably not.

But there were many nouls here now, and some were even adept. Sweetpea was certain (not really, but at least had some hope) that they could get the trapped nouls to safety. She nodded as Havoc left to get the gear as backup, but she was better used here to try to help Indira. "Be safe, please!" she called after him quietly.

She ducked under the waterfall with Indira and the beast, her ears back and her eyes welling a little with tears. Only a little bit of it was acting, she was genuinely terrified of what they were about to do. "Please don't eat us," she warbled. "Please, we have families." She assumed at least someone here did.

Again her offer was ignored but that was okay, the other does had a lot more actual gifts to offer the rat in exchange than she did. She watched as the Big Rat showed Russet Fawn a seed, a very strange one at that, but it was a plant, couldn't be a bad thing right? She was curious though and would be happy to see what grew from it.

She waited for Russet Fawn to answer the Big Rat and grow the seed, moving closer to Nereida and signalling for her two faery friends that it was safe to come down and sit on her again if they wished. Hunts by Night was the first, landing on Owlheart's back "Her name is Dragon" he whispered to the doe, who smiled as the second Faery, Dragon, Flew down and perched on her head, the places they'd been sitting previously. "Well hello Dragon" she mumured to the purple toned faery as she waited for the adept doe to grow the seed.

Nereida's second plea had been ignored as the attention landed upon Russet Fawn with her gift. While Nereida was relived her hair was indeed safe from current torture she still frowned for Fawn. Even in her patience, she was growing weary of this game the "Big Rat" was playing with the three of them. It seemed he rather liked toying with their minds and hearts just for his amusement. There was the promise of the key to the hiding place yet Nereida still watched him like a hawk.

Time was ticking away to rescue those missing and those seeking to rescue. These large creatures devouring things as she recalled in the aftermath may have already gotten to the others. Momentarily, she blinked letting her internal questions subside while refocusing on the task at hand. When the "Big Rat" retrieved a strange seed and reappeared her eyes widened a little.

A golden seed? How interesting.

As Owlheart grew closer to herNereida watched the both of the fairies fly downward to converse. While Nereida still was uneasy about this entire meeting she simply smiled to Owlheart and the fairies trying to figure out exactly what the seed would grow into.

put on a scared...voice?
___________________

Everyone else - the pack of beasts, the nouls who'd attended the resurrection ceremony - was right here.

Cattleya was struck by panic again. Did they have enough people here? Likely not, but she'd heard, certainly, voices. How much time did they have? Did they need to choose what to do now? Indira's faery was proving useful, as nouls who'd answered that first buck's call gathered. It still wasn't everyone, though. With any luck that wasn't a bad thing; if all the beasts were really here, it'd bode well.

Before she had a chance to stop the group, though - she wanted a chance to make sure everyone had a plan when the door opened, however that happened - the beast stepped forward happily to announce their arrival.

Well, it probably didn't matter. If she could smell the people beyond that door, there was no doubt that the ability was mutual.

"To be honest," she whispered. "I-I'm more worried about what the beasts in there will do than this one. I don't think she's in much of a condition to be fighting still, but it took a lot of us to get her here, and - there were at least a dozen nouls at the ceremony, and we heard that only six escaped."

Perhaps this was cowardly of her, but Cattleya was in no way a fighter. She also wasn't the sort of doe who'd leave her companions in the lurch, though, so if everyone looked like they were going to move forward - ugh.

"Please," she said, raising her voice just a bit. She had a real question, after all. "How - how many of you are there?" Though she clearly stuttered, she regretted immediately her choice of words. It wasn't a good idea to draw attention to the numbers here: it probably smelled a lot more like noulicorn than like beast right now, which might give the denizens inside the right impression.

Charming the beasties

Cinder stepped up to the door, making sure to steer clear of the beast, watching it out of the side of her eye the whole time as she, too, attempted to help convince whoever was on the other side to open up.

"We just want to find one of our friends," she said, sounding uncertain.

Honestly, the more she thought about this the less convinced she was that they really wanted to see what was on the other side of that door. This one monster was huge and to think that there might be more on the other side...? They could wipe out the entire party and snack on them for dinner!

Oof... But the thought of leaving one of their Ascended at the mercy of these beasts didn't sit right in her stomach at all.

Specterdust stood to the side, near the rock that Kevin decided to remain sitting on. She watched all the big nouls work on getting the door open in some form or another. She realized that there wasn’t much she could do that was useful here and was partly tempted to double back and go find something to do. But at the same time, if they got the door open, Specterdust might then be useful. She made a face and then looked at the dark cockatrice.

“Wanna play a game while we wait?” she inquired.

Kevin perked up and looked over at her. “Like what?” he asked.

“Hmmm, eye spy?” She looked around. “I spy something...green,” she said in a low voice so only Kevin could hear her.

He looked around for a moment and then responded, “Tree. I spy...something...tall.”

Specterdust gazed around, tilted her head to the side. “Tree?” Kevin nodded, so Specterdust continued, “I spy something with...bark….”

Kevin looked about this time. “Tree. Okay...I spy something-”

“Tree?” Specterdust interrupted.

“Well, yes but you didn’t let me finish,” he sighed. “Your turn.”

“I spy someth-”

“Tree,” Kevin interrupted this time.

“Ugh, fine this game is boring here anyway. Better played in the ruins,” Specterdust huffed.

Kevin’s feathers ruffled a bit as he eyed the tiny grey doe. “You picked it.”

“I picked it because I’m bored and there’s not much in the way of action. I thought that there would be more action.” Specterdust muttered to her sidekick. Her oversized ears flicked towards the waterfall where everyone seemed to be gathered. She’d hoped something would happen soon or she would end up going in search of the rat who made the tracks.

The Big Rat

The Big Rat watches with hungry eyes as Russet Fawn and her familiar plant the seed. His fingers twitch and curl as her magic expels from her horn and surrounds the little plant until its shell cracks and green sprouts free. The Big Rat stretches forward to sniff to the plant and nods to himself, pleased. As promised, he plucks the gear necklace from around his head and hands it toward the three noulicorns.

“Big Rat made this to open the doors,” he says, then chitters darkly. “But it can also lock the doors. Big Rat found them up the river, hiding so sneaky-sneaky behind the waterfall. That’s where the Bone Crusher’s took the nasty nouls.”

Even though questions linger in the air, The Big Rat appears finished with the party of three. He squeaks something to his underling and ambles back to his den.

Russet Fawn, Neredia, and Owlheart look at the tiny sprout and come to a horrible realization. What Fawn has planted is something from the others. An invasive species, like the rats themselves. This thing, whatever it is, isn’t native to Vykeli.

Quote:
You’ve acquired The Big Rat’s gear!

It’s time to head up the river!

The Waterfall

The beast glanced over her shoulder at Indira with an incredulous expression, clearly unimpressed with her acting skills. Her ears perked and her toothy grin widened as Sweetpea stepped up and pleaded. Clearly Cattleya’s heart wasn’t in properly convincing anyone to open anything, and while Cinder put forth a good effort, it wasn’t quite enough to impress these beasties.

But Sweetpea’s attempt appeared to be enough for something to happen.

With an ear splitting screech the door behind the falls began to inch backward. The pulleys and gears shrieked in protest, something in the mechanism was jammed or not functioning correctly. The door stopped fast, leaving a gap just large enough for a single noulicorn to pass through at a time.

“Bring them in!” shouted a guttural voice from behind the door.

“Come on little morsels,” said the beat,” I got the door open for you.”

Quote:
Only one noulicorn can step through right now!

Does anyone volunteer to go, or do you stick together?

The Gear

Running faster than he’d ever run before, Havoc makes it back to the river bank with the footprints in record time. It takes a bit if searching about, but he spots the old gear once more, pressed into the mud.

Getting muddy gear omg hurry up Havoc?

Havoc slid down the muddy bank where he was... pretty sure he had seen the thing. He looked around, getting more and more worried when he had trouble spotting it.
"Ah! Dumb thing!" Spotting the gear, he fumbled with it, hooves slipping around it in the mud. "Augh!" He finally loosened it with a shlorp! from the muck and managed to grab the edge with his teeth. Success! Now to haul haunches back to that door thing!

Filth splattered to the knees, and halfway up his muzzle, the buck climbed the river bed and started back the way he had come once more. No time for more delays, gotta save the day!, he told himself as he galloped through the brush and undergrowth. He poured on what speed he could muster, encouraged by his imagined hero glory.

Run like the wind ladies....!

The longer they stayed down the river the more unsettled Nereida's subconscious was growing. Normally, she takes things like the tides accepting what came and went without the blink of an eye. As for fawn using her magic well, the Dire Rats got what they wanted as far as "favors" to appease them. Silently, she watched Fawn and Talltale work together to bring the seed to life. This plant though wasn't of Vykelli! After a few deductions in pondering, Nereida realized this plant was something from the "Others" not from the world they lived within. A definite alien species that could possibly hurt Vykelli or those living in her sanctuary. Nereida grew uneasy but it had gained her the one thing she'd wanted this entire time; an answer.

Without a second thought, Nereida took the gear quickly. This contraption could help them enter or close a door at the waterfall. Now, her mind started channeling thoughts like a divided river. Eyes upon the "Big Rat" she kept a strict vigil on him till he vanished within the soft bedding content he had gotten his prize. Once the sentry dissipated as well she turned to the other does.

"We have what we came for. Now we know what to use along with where to go". Turning to Owlheart and Fawn she spoke, "We're going to have to gallop back the way we came, faster then we got here. Those things are going to be there so we must stick together!".

Her attention switched to the faeries on Owlhearts back, "As we're returning to the waterfall can you two keep a lookout for us if anything shows up. Time is of the essence. We must get to the others before..."

The vision played back in her mind of the boulders, ancient tree roots,...

Before anyone else could breathe, let alone speak anything more Nereida shot off like a rocket heading left along the river to find the others who must be there at the waterfall by now.

Sweetpea felt the screech of the door opening in her bones. It set of a primal fight or flight that left her shaking for a second. She knew, instinctively, that anything that existed beyond that door was a direct threat to her continued existence.

But it was also a threat to the nouls that could be on the inside. That was the worst part of it all. It felt like someone was going to lose their life regardless of what choice they made.

She was so scared. And there was no way anyone was fitting through that crack with backup. The first person in was surely a sacrifice. She had been so brave up until now. She'd had conviction that they could help. But this was walking into a sure trap. She looked over to Indira and shook her head in a quick but tiny motion. "I can't do it," she whispered. "We need to try something else." She was open to ideas, but everything told her that just waltzing in with no plan was terrible and wasn't going to save anyone. "Is there anything you can do?" Surely an adept was better fit.

Volunteering.

The sound that came from behind the waterfall had Specterdust’s fur on end and ears flicking forwards once more. It wasn’t a sound she’d ever heard before and it sent her racing towards the space behind where everyone else had settled. She pushed through, even going as far to walk under the bellies of the other nouls. Finally, Specterdust set eyes on the door behind the waterfall for the first time and it was only partially opened. Enough for a single noul, nothing Specterdust couldn’t get through due to her diminutive stature. This was it, she could smell the strangeness of the beasts and no light shone through.

A large grey ear flicked back as she heard the pink noul whimper that she couldn’t do it. Specterdust didn’t blame the younger noul for not wanting to. With it so dark and unknown, who knows what awaited inside. How many beasts? What condition were they in? Certainly better condition than the hulking one out here. Specterdust eyed her, she looked like she was bidding her time.

Specterdust turned her attention back to Indira, the only other adept here and one who seemed to be taking on the leader role of this group. Specterdust had hung back and kept quiet more so than normal. It was time she started to step up and help a bit more,“I’ll volunteer to go through.”
