Chel ran the fingers of her free hand down his arm while she talked, almost like they would take away from the embarrassment of what she was going to say. Little distractions.
"I just uh- I dunno I think s'the holiday makin' me think all these things but I guess s'important t'me." Well now she was just building it up to be something more dramatic than it was. "I was just gonna say ... like ... marryin' you ... s'not just your good stuff I guess. Was thinkin' 'bout it when I was goin' through one of the boxes- don't remember which one- I think it was one of your shoe boxes?"
She stopped the motion for a moment. "Yeah, yeah it was 'cause I saw those one shoes I got you in China." The motion picked up again. "Anyways, I was just thinkin' 'bout all the s**t you done ... was gonna say I like you even with all the bad stuff." The Jack that had eaten someone, the Jack that got too violent when he was upset. The one that chose Merlin and the one that had smashed a plate over her head for doing the same. "I think a lot of people themselves over 'cause they only want good things out of people."
Her conversation with Nevada had clearly had an effect as well.

The accidental build up was enough to have him prop himself up with his other arm. Between the warm fuzzy layer drifting over his mind, the seat on the couch, and her touch, Jack almost didn't want to pursue the topic at the moment. Or at the least, he didn't feel fully coherent. But because of that, he was also a little looser in speech, and the impulse grabbed him.
"You have to admit, I'm more of a piece of s**t than I am good things." Maybe that wasn't a joke.

"Join the club," she said back, mirroring the self-depreciation.
"I'm just sayin', there might come a day when we don't got any good left." They were who they were, and who they would become. "I'll still love you." She coughed and mumbled, "and stuff."

"Judging by the people you keep meeting," Jack countered, and it wasn't the same wry tone, and it wasn't quite envious, and it was almost reverent, "I'd say they'd beg to differ."
