Her heart nearly leaped from her throat as she saw the three matching numbers next to the two matching numbers....and then it sank back to her chest as she saw her reward was a mere five coins.
She pocketed four of the five - man, did she have a long way to go - and put the single coin into the slot before turning it.
Or not. He won one. He lost one. He won one. He lost one.
Well, with that pattern, perhaps he'd win this one too. Emmanuel crossed his fingers after he dropped the coin into the machine. Please let lady luck smile upon him...
Well, it wasn't as nice of a win as it had been before, but he'd certainly take it. Some was better than none at all, and he took the coins and deposited them with the others.
Alright, so he was a little closer to being alive than he had been before, but he wasn't exactly out of hot water yet. Not by a long shot, really, thought Emmanuel grimly. Too bad he couldn't just keep playing this game, though. It felt like it would be less rigged.
Sigh.
Now what would he play...

Five more coins dropped out and Lola contemplated stopping to count out what she had. No, one more try, then she'd stop and count out how much she'd saved towards saving her own life. Slipping a final coin into the machine, she closed her eyes and crossed her fingers.
She approached the slots with a good amount of doubt, but despite that she needed to try. It was an easy attempt at a few coins, so why not? She dropped a coin and cranked the handle and...

She dropped another coin and tried again, that excitement and anxiety from her very first encounter with the slots bubbling up again. When she won again, her smile brightened visibly and she took her coins. She made a move to pull another coin from her bag, then gave pause. Was this why people got addicted?

She dropped her coin and sat patiently, watched the icons spin as she waited. It felt like millennia before they finally settled and she had to sort of double back when she saw the coins that came out. It wasn't a whole lot, but certainly more than she was used to. She grabbed then and pulled another coin from her bag, but this time she didn't bother to pause. She liked this feeling...this feeling of winning.

She cranked the handle again, already used to the feel of winning. She held her breath until the icons finally lined up and she won again, a small number of coins but she gathered them up. Just once more...

The next crank of that handle yielded her another win, which she took with a huge grin on her face. She pulled another coin to try her luck just one more time, but this time paused again and took a look around. Was she pushing her luck? Was someone just messing with her? A winning streak seemed...unlikely, but then...
No.
She shook her head and dropped the coin back in her little back as she eyed the machine suspiciously. No, something felt off about this whole winning streak thing. And she wasn't about to go and screw this up for herself. She gulped down the lump in her throat and walked away. There had to be other ways to win...

They had decided to hold off on using their extra coins just yet. They'd try to earn their way out first, and if that failed, they'd use the backup to bail themselves out, and then use the rest towards whomever was left. It seemed fair to them, and that was what drew her to the slot machine.
They needed more coins if they were going to save anyone.

Rasputin looked at the nightmarish rows of slots, knowing what they meant. That Gilda was separated from him, he was grateful. He was sure her luck would be better. Here, the unlucky died.
That had been his whole life. It made sense that it would end now, over this.
He looked glumly at the conditions for the slots. Just one roll, and it would all be different. Everything would be changed. He could see it all in his mind, paying off his and Gilda's debt. Wrapping her in his arms. Taking her to the upstairs restaurant, enshrouded in crystal and wealth built from the blood of the unlucky.
But he knew what he was. He knew his place. His was the blood in the goblets.
He reached out with a shaky hand to take the arm of one of the machines.
He seemed pale and surprised as five coins clinked into the tray. He held them, small, the thought of the debt overwhelming. And if they had valued a creature like him at 100, he couldn't imagine what they had valued her.

It looked a great deal like the slot machines hated her, too.

One more roll, she promised herself. When that was done, she did as she promised, and left to play something else.
