Eudora slurped on her drink as a cool breeze blew through, her dark brown eyes flitting across the ocean expanse before falling back onto the ice worm that sat across from her in the sand; it'd been like this for several minutes now: no matter where Eudora looked, her attention always returned to the white blob. Henry crunched happily on his chips to her right, blissfully unaware or just indifferent to his trainer's discomfort. To her left, the pokemon she'd caught earlier — and named Isaac — chewed quietly on his chips, his fan-like tail flapping in the wind.
Taking her eyes off the worm again, Eudora hurriedly stuffed a few chips into her mouth and let the salt and vinegar flavoring saturate on her tongue before she washed it with another swig of lemonade. "Alright," she muttered to herself, pulling her phone from her pocket. "Let's try her one more time." Eudora put her phone on speaker and let the whole group listen to her phone ring while she bit into another chip and chewed it anxiously. Henry, too involved in snacking, didn't look up while Isaac regarded her device curiously before his attention turned elsewhere. Only the worm gave her its undivided attention – though its monocular vision meant it could only watch her with one eye. Eudora was pretty sure it hadn't taken its eye off of her once; creepy.
Maybe it needed a distraction.
"...Thirsty?" She tilted her can towards it as her phone rang for the third time. No response. Eudora frowned but tried again, anything to get the little creature to stop staring at her. "What about something to eat? Salt and Vinegar is the best flavor out there, hands down." That got a reaction from it, and the pokemon snuffled forward curiously, much to the human's chagrin. Moving quickly, Eudora dunked her hand into her bag and pulled out a fistful of chips to lay haphazardly in front of the worm before it could inch any closer.
"Snom," the worm murmured, inspecting the sand-covered food before taking a cautionary bite and then a bolder one when it found the flavor to its liking. Eudora's sigh of relief was still stuck in her throat when it turned into one of exasperation as her line went dead. "It's Ragine. Leave–" She ended the call before her friend's voicemail could finish, not that she was missing out on anything. Of course, when she desperately needed answers, the woman didn't want to pick up her damn phone.
She needed information, for Henry's sake, but especially her own. Why the hell had this self-proclaimed "expert trainer" given her a bug?!

Once it was obvious that Ragine wouldn't be answering her calls anytime soon, Eudora gave up with an exasperated huff and shoved her phone back into her pocket. Fine then, she'd deal with this on her own. Giving one last glance to the worm, she leaned over her bag and dug around it to find her Pokedex. If she was going to temporarily hold onto this bug, the least she could do was find out more about it. "Snom, the Worm Pokemon," the Pokedex chirped, far too cheerily for Eudora's liking, after she'd scanned it. "It eats snow that piles up on the ground. The more snow it eats, the bigger and more impressive the spikes on its back grow." She grunted, mocha eyes taking in the stubby ice spikes the pokemon sported. "Sorry 'bout that," she said, her apology surprisingly genuine. "I doubt we'll be seeing any snow anytime soon."
Though, now that she thought about it should the wor– Snom even be out? It was sweltering out, and the beach was opposite a snowy field. Instinctively, Eudora reached for the pokemon's pokeball, intent on returning it before she stopped herself, and instead causally patted the sand; as if checking the solidity of the ground had been her true purpose. Snom was still chewing silently on its chips and didn't seem bothered by the heat. Just because she didn't like bugs didn't mean she'd be a b***h. "I'll just return it after it's finished eating," she promised herself.
Eudora turned the Pokedex to Isaac next, figuring it'd be a good idea to take an entire party inventory. "Ryuushu, the Incense Pokemon. This pokemon emits incense from the burner around its neck. It has been recorded to have a calming effect. Because of this, pokemon and people will often gather wherever it sleeps." She found herself nodding along to the description, a new appreciation twinkling in her eyes as she turned to Isaac. "Cute and an insomniac's dream?" Eudora mused before she looked suddenly towards the shore.
"We might as well get some training in while we're here." She pointed to the small group of wild pokemon nearby; sure, they minded their own business, but... well... "Any takers?" Eudora asked; she could rationalize this random violence another time; fortune favored the bold!
Henry looked up from his lemonade, gave the small birds hopping across the sand a single glance, and went right back to sipping on the can. They weren't worth his time. Snom didn't even stop chewing its chips. "I guess you're up then, Isaac," Eudora said as she turned to the feline — or was it more of a canine? She couldn't tell — and offered him an encouraging smile. "Ryuu," Isaac responded, arching his back as he stretched until his joints popped. He fanned the air with each step, and the wind began to pick up.

A comfortable silence, broken only by the crinkling of plastic or Henry and Eudora's slurping, settled onto the trio as they watched Isaac battle. He was pretty strong, or these pokemon were just frail. But, either way! Watching him filled Eudora with the sorta confidence only a seasoned trainer could have; at least, that was what she figured. With that confidence coursing through her, the woman hopped to her feet and snapped up her bag after Isaac downed one of the birds. "It's hard to be a pokemon trainer with only two pokemon," she reasoned before chucking a pokeball at the unconscious bird. The capsule hardly even wiggled before it gave a soft click, and Eudora scooped her pokeball up triumphantly. She looked over her shoulder to check Isaac's progress and swallowed back a squeal: she was too old to be making all that noise, and Isaac was hurt.
"Alright, gang, let's pack it up!" Eudora called as yet another pokeball left her hand, aimed at the blue lion cub Isaac had just taken out; it was positively adorable! Only Henry offered a complaint, still not done with his snack, so Eudora let him stay out in exchange for his help cleaning up their trash. "We'll make a quick stop at the PokeCenter and then continue," she explained, walking at a pace slower than she liked so that Henry could walk and eat. On their way back into town, her phone rang. "Hell–""So you finally did it!" The voice on the other line boomed. "It only took you 13 years! How's the trainer life treating you? Did that kid give you my gift?"
Eudora fought back a smile, "Hey, Ragine." She greeted the woman first because she, unlike her friend, had manners. "It's going okay so far, and yeah, I got your gift. I also have five pokemon. Like that–""You like the pokemon I sent you? I caught it while I was exploring this new region; you should come check it out!" Ragine continued, bowling over Eudora's words as she often did over the phone; their conversations were much better in person because they were actual conversations with dialogue from both of them. At this point, Eudora and Henry had stepped into the Pokemon Center, and she offered Nurse Joy a smile as she handed her her pokemon, minus Henry. "Like is a... strong word for it, Ray. You do remember I hate bugs, right?" Eudora whispered the last sentence, afraid the nurse dedicated to healing all pokemon would hear and judge her.
"Huh? Of course, I remember! I've lost count of how many times an ant or beetle had you running away screaming." Eudora winced and pulled her phone away from her ear as Ragine's boisterous laughter crackled over the line. "...Right." She gave Nurse Joy another smile, this one more sheepish, and recollected her pokemon. "So, why did you send me a bug?" They walked back outside, Eudora taking a second to collect herself before continuing down the path out of town. "For... what do you call it? Exposure therapy. Yeah, that. There's no better way to conquer your fear than to face it head-on." She vehemently disagreed, but the young woman held her tongue. "Besides, I trained the little guy for you! He's probably the strongest on your team right now."
"Mm." She pursed her lips. "...Fine. I'll try to make it work. But don't be surprised if I have to send him back to you." Eudora could hear Ragine grinning over the phone; once again, the older woman had gotten her way. "Anyway, I've got more pressing matters to deal with. What was up with that crystal you sent me? It changed Henry's colors."

Eudora tried and failed not to think about how odd it was to return to a town she’d left only an hour ago; so little time had passed, and yet she was a completely different woman than the one who’d jauntily explored Sandgem’s beach. It wasn't just the bright red bruise she sported or her suspicious and hurried gait. With her good eye, Eudora looked at Sam. How quickly her opinion had changed on the bug. Just an hour ago, she couldn't fathom touching him, and now she was afraid to let him out of her arms. "That's what happen when you only have one survivor." The thought snuck up on her, and she flinched as if it'd shouted. Sam looked up at her, though his wide-set face only allowed him to do it with one eye, fixing her with an unreadable gaze; was he angry with her? Startled, perhaps? Eventually, Sam dropped his head back down, his attention returning to the scenery.
"Mm," Eduora hummed, shifting him in her arms. He wouldn't be as easy to read as Henry.

They had to leave Sinnoh, that much Eudora knew; the idea of staying in the region churned her stomach and left a bad taste in her mouth. But, she also couldn’t return to Unova: even though the region was massive, and the likelihood of running into her family was low, the .1% chance was still too high for her. That still left her with six options. An idea was already formulating in her head, but there were a few things she needed to take care of before she enacted her plan.
It took her a while, mainly due to her many cautionary stops, but eventually, Eudora found the store she needed. Once inside, she perused the aisles until she found what she was looking for, grabbing it and a bag of chips that caught her eye on her way to the counter; comfort foods were a need, not a want right now. She paid with the emergency funds kept in her bag—only a fool kept all their money in their wallet, so she’d at least done something right—and avoided eye contact with the clerk as she handed him the bills. Eudora didn’t bother with a bag, putting her chips in her bag instead, and lingered inside the shop just long enough to turn on her disposable phone.

Eudora waited until she was back outside to start making phone calls, taking up residence against the side of the building before quickly changing tactics and sliding down to the ground. She kept Sam in her lap as she looked out at the empty street, the phone ringing in her ear. Even with everything going on, the weather was still lovely: only a few clouds rolled through the air, and the sea-salt-tinted breeze created an ambient temperature. It was almost enough to relax her; almost. Thankfully, the mundane task of canceling her cards kept Eudora from dropping her guard; nothing like dealing with a bored customer service representative to keep you aware of your surroundings.
Once she finished, Eudora moved to stand up, relocating Sam to the ground but stopped when she remembered the paper tucked in her pocket. She did have a new number, even if it was temporary, and Officer Jenny had told her to call her once she had a phone. Eudora sighed as she fought between procrastination and being responsible; she wasn't ready towasn'twith more people. In the end, responsibility won out, much to her internal shock, and Eudora punched in the number as she stood up. The young woman pressed her phone to her ear as she leaned down to pick Sam back up. It rang twice before someone picked up. "Officer Jenny speaking," a familiar voice said; very prompt, this one. Eudora withheld the urge to sigh again. "Hello. This is Eudora Jones," she said, her voice stiff even to her. "I got a new phone – a disposable one. I'll probably get a new one eventually, but until then..." she let her voice trail off, unsure what else to say. "Okay. Thank you for reaching out to me, Eudora." Eudora hummed in response. "Alright then. Bye." She waited until Officer Jenny repeated the farewell to hang up, releasing the air in her lungs once the line was dead.
"Let's keep moving."

Terrence smiled at Trey again as the boy hesitantly took one of the extra teas he had "of course, I don't mind sharing it really. Besides you're the one who got them for me, only fair you get one too" he said, before taking another sip of his tea. He watched Trey take the lychee tea, and made sure to make a note that the other boy seemed to have a bit of a sweet tooth.
When he saw Trey's eyes light up at the mention of his training, Terrence was relieved that the younger boy didn't seem to have noticed his overly pale skin. He was glad that his training seemed to have bore fruit, considering he was really dejected before going out. He nodded his head, motioning the other boy to continue. When he mentioned that Vita did great, but got hurt he was about to reach into his bag for some herbs. However, it seemed he worried for nothing. Trey had it handled and immediately got a potion of his own to heal Vita. He coughed into his hand in order to hide a laugh as he watched Vita try to act tough, and pretend she was fine. Terrence ignored the slight nudge to his back, knowing that Ivy was practically screaming that Vita and him were similar in that regard. His attention was drawn back as Trey stated that he'd caught Benji.
His eyes moved down towards the little bidoof, before looking back up at Trey. He didn't think bidoof was a bad choice at all, every pokemon had their own strengths, it was up to the trainer to make the pokemon shine after all. He hummed as Trey went on to talk about how people didn't think bidoof were great, but that Trey thought that he could take a chance on him. Terrence felt a bit proud of Trey for that answer "I think Benji will answer your feelings, there's no trash pokemon only trainers who can't unleash a pokemon's true potential" he commented softly. A pokemon would without a doubt answer to their trainers feelings and rise to the challenge if their bond is strong enough. Terrence meant every word he said too.
He took another sip of his tea when he noticed that Trey had gotten silent all of a sudden. When Terrence looked up, he noticed that Trey had been staring at Ivy and seemed to feel pressured by her. He frowned at that, remembering how Ivy came off as intimating the first time they met. He opened his mouth to say something, only to shut it as chance bumped into Ivy once agagin. Ivy tilted her head downwards, eyeing chance "it seems this one has yet to learn its lesson"she clipped quickly, referring to the first time chance had run into her. Terrence groaned, "Ivy" he hissed at her.
Ivy didn't even bat an eye at him as she turned her gaze towards Trey as he greeted her hesitantly. She seemed to study him for a moment before she answered him "Hello small one"she said. Terrence let out another groan before he noticed Lyra giving him a bit of a look. He shook his head and placed a single finger to his lips. He didn't want the pokemon to alert Trey that something was wrong, he'd already been able to divert the other boy's attention enough that he hadn't noticed the subtle signs of weakness he'd been unable to hide. He then turned his attention back towards Trey and Ivy "You're were finally starting to look a little bit like a proper trainer now, but you have a ways to go before anyone will rely on you. You still seem to lack the skill to prevent your pokemon from causing trouble... I do hope you grow quickly, for Terrence's sake"she said. Terrence snapped his head at her "Ivy" he said in a warning tone. He knew what game Ivy was playing, and he didn't like it. She had better keep her mouth shut, or he'd get mad at her for real this time. He was giving her a chance to stop ruining his carefully laid plan. Trey couldn't find out, he'd had enough on his plate already. He didn't need Terrence's illness to top everything off.
The grass type met his gaze with her own in a challenging manner, before she finally relented "forgive me, it seems I've said too much.... apologies"she murmured, before pressing her muzzle to Terrence's cheek in apology. She didn't regret giving the young boy a hint, but she should have been a bit more subtle about it. Terrence huffed, before tiredly sinking further against Ivy's body "please forgive her, she means well but she can be a bit too overprotective... don't think too much about it ok? She was pretty stern with me at first too, still is honestly and even though she won't admit it she's already forgiven you and chance for what happened when we first met" he said, trying to lighten up the mood. Ivy huffed, but didn't deny his words. She might not have appreciated the lack of control on Trey's part, but he was just a child. She'd just have to keep a better eye on both of these idiots.

Lyra glance at Terrence unsure why the other boy was asking her to lie to Trey ( it's not like humans understood pokemon so her way to tell Trey was limited anyways) He had mention it would make Trey sad however and Lyra got from Vita that that was not a good thing. The little fox pokemon gave a yip of 'careful' as Chance went rolling straight into Ivy, lowering her ears when Ivy lectured Chance.
Chance for his part cocked his head to the side unsure of why he was suddenly in trouble. ( all he did was run off..constantly but hey it got Trey and Terrence to meet and everything was just so interesting how could he not run everywhere??) Trey listened with rapt attention as Terrence said that there were no trash pokemon. It was...the opposite of what he had been taut. ( he could already hear his father's opinion about his choice of pokemon. But he liked what Terrence was saying and couldnt help but give a small smile. Trey wasn't sure he would be able to bring out Benji's full potential ( he knew he wasn't the best at battling) but he liked thinking the pokemon would respond to his feelings. "Yeah? I mean I hope I can train him well." he said looking down at the bidoof. "He seems to be happy to be here"
He frowned when Terrence coughed but apparently it was just that. A single cough. ( He was glad, he'd hate it if the boy was sick) "Chance" Trey groaned none the less scooping him up and away from the big pokemon just as chance did a play bow at it. Trey held Chance in his arms as the puppy pokemon squirmed clearly unhappy with being restricted (never mind Trey could tell he was about to tackle Ivy. Which was the last thing Trey wanted considering the legendary ( holy s**t she was a legendary) was still unimpressed wit Trey. Trey looked down as Ivy said he still had a ways to go "I...I know:" he said holding Chance close. His tone was contrite, eyes down, head bowed as though awaiting more reprimand "I...you're right. Chance is...it's on me that he ran off like that. You're right to be mad." The puppy pokemon interrupted his trainer by yippin and Trey let him down ( Chance inmediatly went back to playing with Lyra) Vita for her part was watching the interaction intently. Her eyes narrowing a bit when Trey bowed to Ivy and said "I'll try my best not to inconvenience Terrence. I'm..I'm sorry." He looked up when Terrence started talking, saying Ivy was stern with him too ( was she like Vita? Always reminding him to eat and not freak out? Was that like a grass type thing?) and that she probably already forgave him and Chance ( Trey palpable relief hit him at that though it was a bit mingled with doubt. He glanced at Chance who was now occupying himself by picking up a branch and carting it around-the branch was big enough it went past both sides of his snout-then back at Terrence. "Oh yeah?" he said it was hard to think of Terrence ever messing up ( unlike Trey) and sitting down in front of Terrence. Benji upon seeing free real estate climbed on his lap and Trey pet him absently. Unlock your potential huh, he thought Vita for her part used her vines to climb back up on Trey's shoulder and glanced down at Benji as though assessing if he was a problem before her eyes went back to Terrence and Ivy. "Did you uh..did you also let a pokemon loose when you two met?" he asked trying to match Terrence's light tone. He only half succeeded but it was something.
