The only reason Ripley even bothered to check his phone was to make sure Abbi didn't text him something important; he'd hate to miss it. When he saw only Fini's message though, he briefly considered not answering it...but quickly decided against it for many reasons.

Kyrieko
Text to Fini: I make no promises.

He smirked and tucked his phone away again, just in time to hear the clicking of heels. It was enough to make him stand straighter as he turned to observe who he hoped was Abbi, and when it turned out to actually be her, he paused. Then he stared. It took her cooing and touching his lapel to snap out of it, and his eyes refocused with a single blink.

"Happy New Year." He greeted in return, managing to snatch her hand before she could completely retreat. As usually he mostly ignored her barrage of questions at first, preferring instead to pull her hand close as he stooped to press a brief kiss to her knuckles. "You look lovely." He murmured his appreciation, turning to loop her arm with his; he'd be damned if he didn't play a perfect gentleman, after all.

"I'm sure it will be~" While he agreed with her, he couldn't help but feel a sense of impending doom. Finn was going to be there, after all. That text he had sent earlier...on one hand, this night could be absolutely fantastic but on the other, well, there was Finn. Tonight he decided to err on the side of optimism, and with that thought in mind he guided his lovely date towards the party.

He certainly didn't expect to be stopped by who he assumed was her Mother. She certainly fit the descriptions, and he had seen the woman in passing during his time here. Still...if he was right...that meant the Mother of his date would be at the party as well. Ripley managed to keep his cool demeanor, though internally he was sweating bricks, and managed a small glance at Abbi before looking at the woman he assumed was her Mother.

"Ah...let me introduce myself. Ripley Crowell, Death Hunter." He extended his right hand to shake, thankfully without having to let go of Abbi's arm.

"A pleasure to meet you, Otto," said Alistaire with a casual nod of his head in the other's direction. He at least waited until the boy was gone before allowing the full smirk to spread across his face, Alistaire keeping his hand securely against Maebe's neck for a moment longer.

"Your tastes sure are...varied," he said, following Otto's departure for a moment, and for a split second, Alistaire's fingers dipped lower, settling into the area around Maebe's collarbone. It would have been an idle gesture, were it not for the carefully neutral expression on his face. "I would have thought you'd be into more...well..."

The sentence trailed off, and he let go, dropping his hands to his side. "I was putting Madeline to bed," he said airily, sliding gloved hands into the pockets of his black slacks. "She wanted to come, but it's past her bedtime, so I made her stay."

The corners of his lips curled upwards. "And then I get here and find you slumming. How...appropriate."

Yes, Lina had been sure--right up until she saw her mother's expression. And the kid with her. Uh-oh. "Just follow my lead," she whispered quickly to Gale, giving his hand a squeeze in return before turning to the others with a bright smile.

"Hi! Justin, right? What sort of new guild is this?" she asked with deep curiosity. "You should tell us all about it! I know Mom's been interested in joining a guild for a while now, actually . . ."

Leaving Mama Zoey in the dust was easy, even in tiny little heeled shoes that make her feel like she is going to topple over just as much as they make her feel like she could walk her own personal staircase to the stars. But its Ripley's stoic way of standing, very regal and specific in its formality, accompanied by his open staring that really makes her feel weightless. There is a moment between where her fingertips leave the fabric of his suit and his hand find her's that she fears she really will just faint away to the floor, but the warmth of his mouth touches her hand and she instead feels a minor explosion of very aggressive butterflies in her stomach. They are enough that her smile is replaced with a hushed gasp that turns into a bashful smile she cannot quite turn to him.
"Th-thanks... I uh... Got this dress on a field trip to... To New York City... I found it in a vintage store." This was, of course, an extremely important detail to mention because it not only showcased her worldliness, but also her foray into interesting fashions. Not that the bunny eared hoodies, brightly colored petticoats stuffed until short pastel skirts, and numerous animal shaped backpacks hadn't already displayed that enough.

The way he folds his arm against her own is enough to send her swooning, but it is the clatter of someone breathless behind them that makes the teen wince.
"Oh! I thought you were gonna head on without me!" Abbi chirped in her best nonchalant voice, her grip on Ripley's arm having turned a bit sharp when Zoey came into view. Before she could say anything the man had done what her mother had asked, a true gentleman that would have made her sparkle had her mother not been there to witness the exchange.
Instead the teen wiggled her hips, granted a fun swish-swish of her dress while she waited from them to shake hands before she gestured.
"Ripley, this is my Mama, Zoey! Zoey Renolds... She adopted me when I was 13!" That was extremely important, even if the girl was quick to tack on a very chipper, "She is the best mama anyone could ask for!"

It went without saying that Abbi was lucky enough to have been given two wonderful mothers, the first taken too soon, the second given too late. But she has spoken of this to Ripley before in hushed tones, blue eyes cast down so he cannot see how wounded she is to always worry about the mother she now has in case something were to happen to her. Deus is a wonderful place, but her mother works a dangerous job and she cannot help herself but to fret sometimes.

Finn's phone buzzed in his pocket quite soon after his text to Ripley was sent, and he pulled it out to have a quick look before letting out an audible sigh, thumb hovering over the keys as he thought about what to send in response, or whether he should even bother. Once bro's, once something a little more, and then bro's of a more literal sense, and then women had come between them. More Finn's fault then anyone's, considering he was the one who'd fallen hard for womanly wiles first, but it still stung to reminisce about the old days.

Another waiter wandered by, close enough for another glass of champagne to be thrown back, the carbonation burning slightly on the back of his tongue and down his throat before his phone buzzed again in his hand, and he glanced down.

He said he'd be there shortly. In other words, he was waiting on Abbi to be finished getting ready. Well, good luck with that, bro. Someday, he'd be leaving for the party early as well just to get away from her.

It was hard to pinpoint exactly when Finn had become so cynical, but it seemed to correspond quite well with a thing known as the third trimester.

More time passed, and Finn found himself becoming more of a wall flower then anything, snatching up another flute of champagne, telling himself he still had plenty of time to fetch food and something to drink for Fini so that she could just sit and relax when she arrived. He hadn't bothered texting Ripley back because clearly his brother was a lost cause.

And then his phone buzzed again, and he fished it out for a second time to see.

Oh. Oh s**t.

Finn glanced along his wall to each side with a suddenly very worried expression, reaching up to yank his tie slightly. Fini was here, already, and she was claiming to be standing against a wall.

Not his wall, apparently.

Kyrieko
Text to Fini: I'm in the buffet room, getting your food. Tell me which wall you're on, and I'll be there soon.
Of course, it was a complete lie as he was actually in the ball room, but she didn't need to know that. And if she told him where she was waiting, he was pretty sure he could sneak by unnoticed.

Another text was quickly sent out to another party.

Ol-j-man
Text to Jack: Please tell me you're in the buffet room. I need a plate of food ready for Preggers Mcgee two minutes ago. Be a bro and get one ready for her, and I'll pick it up in one minute in the entranceway.

And then just one more.

Every second of conversation was met with a polite smile that appeared a little too tight on one side of her face due to an old burn--one that she had covered up with makeup as best she could for the occasion but could not hide the extra squint to her eye. Crowell. That was an old name if she remembered correctly, but the only age she was concerned about was the obvious gap between this man and her daughter. Call her old fashioned, but Zoey would have preferred fussing over someone who was still in puberty instead of wondering if she was willingly allowing a cradle robber to get away with Abbi.

At least she had a name to look up after all the vague hints her daughter had dropped. Zoey wasn't in Death anymore, but she still had means of getting information.

"Abbibunny, dear, you hopped on ahead before I was even finished getting ready," she replied with a patient smile, adjusting the rabbit brooch at her neck idly. Her eyes then swept down to their joined hands and up to Ripley's extended one, which she took without missing a beat.

"A treat to finally meet you, Mr. Crowell," Zoey greeted, her smile turning cooler. "I was wondering when she would bring a boy around the house. How are you this evening?"

Her neatly manicured grip had yet to let go of his.

Scars and disfigurations were natural and every day for them, and he had only given Zoey Reynold's oddly mismatched eyes or the way one half of her face seemed much more stiff than the other a single passing thought. Right now he was concerned with meeting the Mother of the lovely teen on his arm, knowing full well their age difference would be a huge issue in the coming conversation.

"And you, Ms. Reynolds. I've heard a lot about you, it's a pleasure." Ripley was extending his typically short-and-sweet method of conversing with most people for this one meeting, knowing how important it was. His smile faltered for a moment when she mentioned bringing a boy home, and he cleared away the discomfort with a small, forced chuckle. "My apologies, I should have introduced myself earlier." He gave a nod of his head that had meant to be apologetic, and when Zoey didn't seem to be willing to let his hand go, he did the same.

He understood a Mother's threat when he saw one. His own Mother had given it a lot to Junior, Ceres' boyfriend, when he first started coming around.

"I'm doing well, thank you. Yourself?" His question was punctuated by a telling ding from his coat pocket, and a moment later there was the distinct sound of Abbi's ringtone as well, enough to make him groan. "Ah, I'm sorry, I have to check this." If Zoey continued to keep his hand, he would merely let go of Abbi's arm to fish his phone free, flipping it open to see the frantic texts from his adopted brother.

"There is someone I have to check up on." His tone was apologetic, and as sincere as he could get. At first it seemed like he was going to leave it at that, but then he recalled several long lectures from his sister on not being so secretive. Not that he was secretive at all, he was simply very private, and hadn't realized that most people would want him to elaborate. "My sister-in-law is pregnant, I've been asked to keep an eye on her until my brother arrives." There, that should be enough information, right? Hopefully.

"If it's okay with you, we could continue this little chat later?" He offered with a small smile. He fired away a quick one-handed text to Finn and slid the phone back into his pocket, looking down at Abbi. "He texted you too, didn't he? Did you want to come with me to find her?"

"Not an escort quest, Justin. Considering how many hit points the princess golem had left last time, you need to work on your tanking." Aria corrected as she looked Gale over from top to bottom. It didn't take her very long. "Good evening, Gale. I trust that your evening has been well so far?"

The assistant narrowed her eyes at Lina, giving her adopted daughter the most unimpressed look. "Speaking of guilds," she interrupted, "Justin. In order to form one you'll need to collect signatures. However, right now? No one will talk to you unless you put on a disguise. Luckily for you, Gale happens to be wearing a nice suit coat that you might be able to loot off of him." Aria gave Gale a bemused smile as she added, "Even if it might be a little small."

After a pause, Aria leaned forward and whispered quite loudly to Gale, "Now might be a good time to consider getting all the skills you learned as a Death hunter to good use."

An over the top wince marred the girl's face at the mention of her nickname, but it smoothed out as soon as it crossed her features because the nickname was pretty cute, all things considered.
"My hair looked so cute and you did such a good job that I couldn't help but hurry on!" Maybe that was half a lie, mostly because she had hurried half because Ripley was waiting for her. The girl did turn up a pout at her mother, her eyes wide enough to sparkle lightly.
"Don't be mad at me?" That would be enough to soften her dearest mummy, right?

Another wince left her when Mama Zoey mentioned bringing a boy around, the girl shooting her mother a guilty look. Didn't she remember Milo a year or so ago, the two bouncing around the house noisily until it had gone quiet and Abbi had mourned her first break up? Why did Mama Zoey have to be like this? Why couldn't she be cool about it? The age difference wasn't hat bad! Its not like it was any of the guys Abbi had brought home in attempt to set up with her mother...

Unaware of the power struggle going on, the teen did catch the loud tinkle of her phone as it went off. With a free hand she shuffled through the pockets of her dress, though she did stop to eagerly tell Ripley "There are pockets in my dress! Real pockets! Look my phone and my runic dagger and my runic bandages fit in here look isn't this the neatest thing ever!?!" because really who made dresses with pockest besides the greatest people ever? After that little exultation the teen looked at her phone before she went into Hardcore Sparkle mode.
If The Baby was being mentioned it was serious business and the teen paused to tap out a message back to Finn.

But I'm totally on my way! w(°o°)w I totally wanna feel it kicking! Babby always calms down when I pet it! (* ∇ *)Ripley and I are on the way!

After the message was sent there was a flurry of activity as Abbi pocketed her phone again, alongside the rearrangement of the previously mentioned items, before she turned a still sparkling look to Ripley.
"The Baby really needs me." The Baby had been discussed before, specifically that Abbi was going to make bank with the babysitting money she would reap from The Baby.
As for Mama Zoey, the teen turned her Srs Bsnss face to, eyebrows drawn over blue eyes as a hand found a pink streak to trace the curl of.
"You know about Fini's Baby. Its kickin' a lot and needs me, ok? We'll see you later ok? Right before midnight, promise Fairy Mother! We gotta go find her, ok?" If she made it a command, her mother might balk, but a request couldn't be denied.
A bright smile was turned to Ripley, hopeful and excited.
"Yeah, he did! Let's go find Fini!"

"I'm doing well, all things considered." They were both lucky they had an excuse, because it was clear she would have found ways to prolong her intrusion. Ripley's hand was released, Zoey turned her gaze back on her adopted daughter, and it was almost disconcerting how quickly she transitioned from cool to warm.

"Understood. Say hello to The Baby for me~" she cooed, leaning forward to get one last hug from Abbi before the party swallowed them all up. In her ear she whispered, "Remember the last pocket on the left," before delivering a kiss to the teen's nose and pulling away with a better smile than she had greeted the couple with originally.

"I'll check on you two later. Enjoy yourselves~" she said airily and made for the party. Abbi would notice at some point that she was no longer in possession of her runic dagger.

A funny sidekick was something Milo could see him as, if the right person arrived to steal some of his thunder. But his ideal, if asked for his opinion, would still be to lead; you know, like a Red Power Ranger. But that hadn't been talked about, no, his joke was being processed and he tried very hard to hold onto his grin as she worked it out.

Not that he was terribly disappointed that it took her some time to work it out, but it was hurting his cheeks. But, the brunet would have liked to have gotten a laugh out of it. Which he didn't, so he supplied one nervously as he raised a hand to scratch at the nape of his neck. "Nah, jokes aren't always my thing," he explained with a shrug, "though I like ta think I can be witty from time to time, ya." Even if it did fall flat. Like now. He was feeling like that little pat on his shoulder was out of sympathy of his failings and the Sun trainee wasn't sure how he felt about falling flat. Did it happen often? Or were people just being nice? He still held an earnest smile on his face though, and even gave Taani a little wink.

Still though. "Auditions?" Because he didn't know what she was getting at. Was there something going on on the island he didn't know about? Or was this a lost in translation; he was picking up on a language thing going on.

And then a vision in oranges and purples crossed his line of sight, gathered so close to one of white. His hand was instantly in his pocket, reaching for his phone. "Don't mean to be rude, wahine, but I need to send an important message," and tapped away with a wicked smile.

Shiloh was brimming with energy, excited for the evening and the prospect of sharing it with the man who followed close behind them. He’d crushed on Ian for a long time, but he never would have dreamed of asking him to the ball. Ian was so cool, a few years his senior with impeccable hair and green eyes to get lost in, Shiloh always figured him a league above. It didn’t help that they ran in different circles of friends, and that Shiloh was most times clueless to any hints Ian gave and thus he’d been surprised when Ian finally asked him, absolutely thrilled, but surprised. Of course, surprised or not, he’d said yes, and then spent the rest of the time until the awaited night dreaming up how it might go. He’d, after all, planned to spend it solo, to perhaps snag a few dances with Maebe and friends, but now he had someone to monopolize, and, he dared to hope, someone to share a New Year’s kiss. Not a friendly peck on the cheek, but a kiss with someone he actually wanted to, well, kiss.

Yep, he was excited.

His outfit was about as flamboyant as his personality, his white dinner jacket seemingly normal and appropriate until one reached his pants, which were undeniably pink. It was an odd combination, but it worked, even if it didn’t necessarily match his date’s attire, aside from his tie, the only thing he’d been able to coordinate. More likely the only thing Ian would have been able to get him to oblige changing, Shiloh determined to stand out as Shiloh, and no one else.

“This is so great,” he enthused, grinning back at Ian. “They really went all out this time.”

He spent the past three years crushing on a guy that he was relatively sure did not like him the way that he most definitely liked Shiloh Parish.

Ian had been on the island for too long, and he very much liked it (it was infinitely more pleasant than having to deal with the people he had once called his parents), but if there was one thing it was lacking, it was the presence of a certain blonde boy year round. They'd met when they were younger and Ian had become increasingly more interested as time went by. He'd dropped hints, of course, both subtle and obvious, but Shiloh had seemed entirely uninterested.

Story of his life, Ian thought.

Which was why, when the New Year's party had come into focus, Ian had decided to just let it go and ask, half because he figured he had nothing to lose if Shiloh said no, and half because why the hell not. He'd had a thing for Shiloh for too long without ever actually acting on those impulses, and now it was time to throw caution to the wind.

Needless to say, Ian had been completely taken aback when, after he'd stumbled through a very awkward and entirely uncool process of asking Shiloh out, Shiloh had actually said yes.

He was still trying to work that out in his mind. Maybe Shiloh had thought he'd meant as friends, which wasn't too far fetched. After all, Ian had mumbled something like, "You should come to the New Year's party with me," which wasn't exactly the most romantic things he could have said (he was still beating himself up over that).

But regardless, here they were...together. Ian fiddled with his tie, slid his hands into the pockets of his slacks, and turned to the side, giving Shiloh a grin. "It's really nice in here, isn't it?" he asked, scanning the room. Alistaire had to be here somewhere, and Dorian, but Ian was less concerned about his two brothers and more concerned about the guy currently next to him.

"So, uh," said Ian, and turned to look at Shiloh, forcing a smile. "You look...great."

And you sound pathetic, a nagging little voice in Ian's head said, but he slapped it away hastily.

Gale coughed, shuffled his feet, and tugged at his too-small suit self-consciously, giving Lina a slightly exasperated look that said something like I knew this was going to happen she totally does not like me. Out loud, however, he merely gave a small laugh and a nod, winding an arm around his girlfriend's waist.

"It's been a really lovely night," he said, and then flicked his gaze towards Justin, slightly bemused.

"Uh."

"What do you care about my tastes." Maebe was fussy, which meant she wasn't goint to respond very sweetly to anything until she was knocked out of her mood. And that, unfortunately for her, was unlikely. She opened her mouth, ready to spew a torrent of anger, but the moment he mentioned Madeline her lips pursed shut, and she was put in her place. There was no real way to argue against that, was there? Alistaire wasn't off with some floozy like she'd convinced herself, he was tucking his daughter in to bed.

And she was now, without question, the bad guy.

"You could have told me that, in your text." She was reaching, trying to find excuses for her behavior, when the only real excuse was that she was awful, and he deserved better. She brushed her hair back, straightening it out to perfection. "I'm not psychic you know."

The entire time, she refused to look at him. It was so much easier to be the woman she thought she needed to be, when she didn't look into his eyes. She surveyed the crowd ahead of them, instead. Her critical gaze glared sullenly. "Anyway. This party is like, a total bust already. You weren't missing much."

Just don't look at him, Maebe. Don't look at him, and don't let yourself care.
