Sherry had noticed his absolutely delightful mood. It had struck her as odd. But. She knew he was happy about gaining whatever item it was that he had, and she knew they hadn't been failing too badly just now. BUT. "Of course! Anything to help my dear partner!"Sherry stopped dead in her tracks. He was way, way too happy and nice. "Are you talking about me?" This was Jake. The grumpyface who didn't want friends, partners, or anyone. Ever. How many times had he said it? Armagnac reminded Sherry that she wanted more hitting. Sherry ignored her for the moment. Her eye might have twitched. There wasn't anyone else here, just them and their weapons. She stared.
He seemed genuine. Fully, totally genuine. No malice. Heck, he had even stepped up the defense.
"What has gotten into you?" She asked, coming back in for an attack.

"You...you never say stuff like that." Really. Quite the opposite, actually. "Are you telling me you actually mean it?"
She took another swing at the creature as she talked, since it was the easiest way to keep Armagnac placated.
"What brought about your change of heart?" She wasn't complaining. Really. Not at all. Worried, however. She might be that.

There was clearly something wrong. Did he just ask her that? Really? Truly?
Even Armagnac noticed. (Mostly because, well, Sherry wasn't as into the fight now.) In a flurry of emotion and words she communicated her feelings on the subject (don't trust him), and asked for Sherry to hit something.
Sherry obliged the weapon, and then turned back to Jake. "Yes. You have been mean to me before." Why would he even ask that?

Sherry stared some more. There were two ways this would go. Either there was something wrong with kid, or he was planning to kill her.
Now. Sherry really hoped he wasn't quite as evil as Armagnac. Just because she would talk nice to someone just to get close enough to gut them didn't mean everyone would.
She also hoped he wasn't setting her up for more insults. Though she might be ready, since she could practically see it coming.
Of course, if there was something wrong with him....she didn't know what she would be able to do about it.
"Are you serious? Because, if your not, just stop now and tell me how worthless I am again." She punctuated her words with another slash at the creature.
"And if you are...." Ok. She didn't know what to do in that case.

He was clearly mocking her. Obviously. He was just so good at it, it had taken forever for her to notice it.
"Lies," the word left her lips as she took the glaive to the shadow beast one last time. Satisfying.
Then she wheeled on Jake, and with her free hand she grabbed him by his coat. "Now you're just mocking me. Stop it."

He only gave her a confused and hurt look, placing one hand over hers, the one clutching his coat.
"I...what can I do to prove that I'm not lying?"
A loud grumbling sound startled him, and he quickly pried Sherry's hand off his jacket.
"I think that'll have to wait though, there's still 1 more!"

That look he was giving her. It...she swore she could see no malice. Armagnac insisted that meant he was doing it right, though.
And then his hand covered hers. That look, that touch. In spite of herself, she might have been blushing.
Thank heaven the beast showed up.
Sherry focused her attention on the beast.

Of course she was. How much effort had he put into telling her to stfu and gtfo? From her standpoint, a lot.
She knew he thought she wasn't worth much as a hunter, and probably as a person, too.
No. We need his help with this one. She knew the limits of her fear shield.
She glance back at Jake. Either he hit his head, or he really hated her. Neither option made her happy.
