Several of the revolutionary bastards already seemed to be beating a hasty retreat, probably in response to the sight of a big bronze wher. "You better run!" he snarled. "And tell your shaffing coward friends what happened when you tried to take the Last Bastion!" Another in front of him that wasn't running? Carltis snarl and charged at the b*****d; dead or gone, he didn't care which, but nothing else would do.

[Rochelle]

Oh s**t.

Right, using words to comfort did no good. Rochelle jerked back, not out of shock or fear, but for Aleck. She did her best to half turn, one arm around the shoulders, the other flying up to his chest. Her palm pressed down flat over the beat of his heart, bracing herself for some sort of lurching or fighting from the other weyrbrat.

She spoke quickly, low, trying to be as comforting as possible in the swift words. "He's going to be alright, Aleck. He's lost blood and it's making it hard for him to concentrate, but he will be okay. You are going to hold his hand and reassure him you're here and know it will be fine. You aren't alone. Your father is still here, he knows you. It's okay."

Somewhere she knew her words wouldnt help any, and Aleck may flip his tits anyway. She remembered when Rocham had gotten so hot that they feared his brain would never recover, he ranted like this, didn't know who she was or where he happened to be. He'd come out of it. So would Bereck.

---

[Siata]

Siata chased after the boys, scowling. Siask settled down on top of one of the corpses, lapping at the torn throat with gusto. "Moronic idiot wher!" Redundent, yes, and she doused his eye with redwort. Siask snarled ad hissed, but he didn't move from where he'd set himself. "Going to get yourself hurt again and s**t where is the other kid?"

She looked up and around wildly, eyes opening wider when she saw Carltis chasing. "HEY! Stop it! You're going to get yourself sharding killed!"

Becka had fetched some supplies for helping the Wher, she had put her hand on the door to talk to the Wherhandler when the fighting had happened. In her fright she dropped everything, scurrying back into the infirmary, her whole body shaking as she scrambled backwards, her eyes on the door. Naturally, she tripped on something and ended up shuffling back, keeping her eyes fixed on the door, she'd seen the Wher go for the man that had attacked Carltis and she was reminded of how vicious they could be. She felt horrible but there was no way she was going near the Wher, she'd just stay way over here thankyouverymuch .... away from the creature and it's very sharp teeth and claws. She didn't look where she was going, unable to keep from watching the door, as such, she didn't see the person she scrambled into, lurching forwards she flung her hands over her head and fought the urge to burst into tears again.

[Carltis]

He stopped, rounded on the woman. His teeth flashed in a snarl, and blood streamed down his face. "So what? What the shaff does that matter? Who's going to give a s**t? Not anyone in there, and not you for long! I might as well die if it means something now! I might as well do something people give a damn about for just a moment!" He hurt, and he was scared and alone and it seemed everyone had close connections other than him. He raised a hand to his face and pulled it back to study the streaked scarlet upon it. "That's my purpose, right?" he went on, his voice now resigned and gruff. "I'm good for fighting and bleeding for and dying for the others inside. Isn't that it?"

He hadn't felt able to deal with all the things going on in there, but he couldn't deal with being alone either. He relied on himself, and looked after himself, and all of that felt... meaningless. Everyone in there cared about somebody, and was cared for in return. Out here the same was true, save for him, because he was a damned pathetic fool. Because he wasn't likeable.

"Might as well be remembered."

"Dad-!" Why couldn't he hear him?! Aleck started forward out of Rochelle's hold and ran up against her flat of her hand. For a moment he fought against her - why was she holding him back Bereck needed him - face contorting with helpless anguish. "Dad no don't go Dad-" Rochelle was saying something but he couldn't listen; his hearing was full of heartbeats and the sense of impending loss that silenced the logical voice in his head.

"Dad!"

It was the same odd sensation as his first time on dragonback, watching the earth fall away while Berath winged higher into the clouds.

"Dad.."

[Siata]

Siata blinked at the man for a minute. No - not really a man. A child still, despite being near her own age. He had the upset and insecurities of one, the body of an adult with the fear of a person not yet used to this status in life living in his eyes.

"So, if you try, I'll have my wher sit on you and he'll win," The wherhandler reached the man with a few long strides and slapped one big hand on his shoulder as a friend would. Why not. "No one gives a s**t about that guy who just ran out of here. He's nameless and worthless. He ran like a coward, my good friend. It's good to have a purpose, and purposes always change. C'mon."

She squeezed and pulled at him, trying to get him to head back towards the infirmary.

"Live and I'll drag you out for a drink after all this s**t. Not in that sexy way, a drinking buddies way. I might even leave the big guy behind. Now come back and help with Siask instead of killing more. That is helpful to everyone."

----

[Rochelle]

She didn't register Becka running away again, her attention still on Aleck and on Bereck. Her arms locked in place, head shaking, and she tried to pull him back and towards her. "Breathe, Aleck. He isn't going anywhere, hun, he isn't, he's still right here. Remember Rocham? He came back. Bereck will come back."

Her hand slid up to drape over his shoulders for something almost like a hug. 'Breathe and hold his hand, Aleck, don't panic. You said you didn't know what to do, I'm telling you. Okay? Listen to my voice."

By this point she'd just started talking, trying to break through to his mind. Something had to get through, right? Somehow?

[Carltis]

He wasn't used to being grabbed in a non-aggressive way.

He blinked and stepped back. "What?" Drinks. Nobody asked him out for drinks. He felt sick and shaky, remembering blood and screams and things he couldn't fix. "I... Right." He shook his head violently, spraying drops of blood. "Alright. Let's... let's see about Siask then. Fixed wher can defend us all." He knelt down, and then looked up at the handler. "Uh.... Question. Do I still have my eye?" He gave what sounded like a laugh after the question, but it didn't feel like one.

************

[Bereck]

He didn't reply.

He didn't hear.

Though he made no sound his lips moved again as though he was still trying to speak, and his face remained taught with distress.

After a moment or a lifetime, the Healer's expression smoothed not to happiness or even peace; his face went bland, still, empty of all the thoughts that usually flickered visible across it to those who knew him well.

Tiny breathes still stirred his chest, and a weak thready pulse still fluttered onward, but the Healer's bright active mind was gone again and showed no sign of returning.

[Kleos]

..She didn't want to know what was going on behind her.

That fact, that distress and helplessness showed on the wingleader's face quite clearly. "Welcome," she said shakily, not sure if she had already said it to the wingrider before her. "Thing here are... are precarious at the moment, but every one who comes as you have one strengthens us. Welcome, rider, and my thanks to you." She had no more to give than her sincere gratitude. She wished she could do more. She wished she could fix this.

Looking up she saw V'eck standing like a statue. His face was still, but the look in his eyes stabbed her in the heart and she had to look away.

She had been chosen as a leader.

She had to lead, and protect, and make all of this alright and she couldn't!

[Siata]

"Drinks. You know, alcoholic beverages, the sorts most of us will be drinking at some point after this because this s**t is whack. Honest, it's crazy, and you seem like a wild drunk," She grinned, no offense taken by the steps back. The wherhandler blinked and it was only then that she realized that the guy actually had a slash down his face. "... well damn. Yeah, I think you have your eye. Pretty sure. Siask!"

The half blind wher looked up and within half a minute was at her side with the ichor-coated shirt. Siata balled it up and held it out to Carltis. "Here, put this on your... entire face. You're handling it better than me. I screamed '******** MY FACE ********' and other such things."

The weyrbrat sagged against her hold. Getting worse. Gone. A bubble grew inside his chest that would not rise or pop, forcing his breaths out in sick, shaky gasps - growing sobs, maybe laughs, maybe desperate noises somewhere in between. "Dad-"

Someone was telling him to breathe. He tried; it caught in his throat but his head cleared, just a little, as that same someone said it would be all right. Rochelle. It was hard enough to do what she was asking - stop his shaking shoulders and hold on. He needed- he wanted-

He didn't lean into her hold but he didn't push it away either, and the great shuddering heaves ebbed to small, irregular tremors. "I don't know what to do, Ro," he whispered tightly. "I don't know what to do."

[Carltis]

He took the shirt, showed his teeth in a snarl and ripped off a sleeve, which he tied over the injured side of his face. "Half my face will have to do and if I haven't got the eye I guess there's not a shaff of a lot we can do about that," he said, voice half shaky half snarly at the whole damn world. "So... so remind me what I have to do?... And. Drinks. Yeah. That'd be nice.... Maybe we can all go together." Even weepy Becka, and that damn snobby wingleader. "And... well... I... guess I'm distracted by other things. It doesn't even hurt... yet." It would soon, he was sure, but for now it didn't and that gave him leeway to get s**t done.

[V'eck]

V'eck froze.

He now had a crying person on him.

This was not his area of expertise.

He was, however, a little glad of the distraction. He patted her vaguely on the back. "Are... are you alright, young lady?... What's going on out there?"

[Rochelle]

Bereck passing out came as no real surprise; to be honest, the fact he held on to conciousness so long was the surprise. Rochelle spared him a glance and felt the harsh stab she felt whenever she'd seen her mentor in the same state. He could not be comforted, not knowing himself at the moment.

"I know, hun. I know." She leaned up a bit more to strengthen her hold. Being a woman with more leg than torso up against a stork of a man meant she had to, arms curling closer. She pressed her nose to his temple, fingers flexing at his hair for a light pet. "Bereth would be telling us if he weren't to come back, there would be keening. Everything will be alright, he's just resting."

She murmured her words, rocking against the young man slowly. "I know. You aren't alone in this."

---

[Siata]

"Oh, it'll hurt like the worst thing ever in a little bit there, handsome." Another clap of a hand on his shoulder before she headed back towards where she left the supplies. "Let's dump some of that cleaning s**t on it, keep it from getting all festered and gross, you know? Mine came at the hand of a newly hatched, hungry baby wher and nothing bad came of it except a scar, so you may be so lucky."

She grinned, even if he couldn't see. "I'm going to have you hold him down now, since I'm the one with two eyes that aren't coated in blood. I don't think the little healer is coming. Siask?" The bronze sidled up and flopped next to the supplies, rumbling, licking his muzzle free of blood.

Siata grabbed more redwort, studying it before asking, tone nonchalant, "That outburst back there... You were talking about the scrawny dude and the not so scrawny girl, weren't you? You guys friends?"

He'd sat next to them, after all. She'd spoken to him as if they knew each other, he'd acted as something of a protector. They'd been in there together once she'd entered. It made sense.

[Carltis]

Hold the wher. Muscle work. His speciality. He wanted to cry and hide, but instead he nodded and did as directed.

...Friends?

Carltis looked away, which was much easier to do with half his face covered with cloth. "No. We're not friends... well they seem to be, with each other. I'm not. They... well I know them. I guess. Sort of grew up together. For a bit. She got a family adopted though and went off to study craft, and he always had family, and now they're friends together in there apparently and-"

Shaff!

He was saying too much!

He showed his teeth in a snarl, and still felt like crying, and tried not to look like he did. "And what does it matter? L-like I say. I know them a bit. We're not friends."

When the hand touched her back Becka flinched, she didn't mean to but the terrors of the day weren't fading, in fact they'd been seared in her mind again when she'd seen that Wher attack the revolutionaries. She turned and looked up, oh... it was the man who'd killed the wher that'd hurt Bereck .... she scrambled to her feet and wiped a hand across her eyes, wiping away the tears she didn't know she'd been crying. "I'm ...the Wher... the one on our side... there's people out there, trying to get in.. Carltis.." ... her eyes flew wide, Cartlis, he'd been hurt. "Cartlis .. he was out there with the Wher and his handler... " she muttered. She happened to glance over towards Bereck, the healer in her wanting to check in on him, shards he was unconsious again "I'm sorry... i.. " she sniffed and heaved a few deep, ragged breaths, trying to be brave in front of the dragonrider "i have to go see to Bereck.... i need to find a proper healer to look at him.. i did my best but... " it was clear she was still in training, no where near ready for journeymanship.
