When she was newly recruited, she had jumped at the chance to get to know others. Hell, she had even made a great number of friends. Of course, such was the folly of a naive youth. One that would pay the same toll year after year when more friends died. It seemed almost unfair that their lives were cut so short but that was part of the risk, one they all signed up for.

Still, she would always return home and every night, she would say a prayer before she went to bed. Each prayer ended with the promise to see them soon and the more she prayed, the more she felt like a liar. It wasn't as if she had a death wish or anything. She always gave the missions her all but to be honest, she wouldn't be sad to die. She knew that this mission would be difficult, perhaps the most difficult that she had ever been privy to. Yet it didn't scare her or bother her. Every chapter had to close for a new one to begin.

Snapping back to reality, she realized she had been staring at Gabriela the entire time she had been thinking. She couldn't remember the last time she had been so embarrassed! "Uh.. thanks..," she mumbled awkwardly. She stepped closer to Gabriela to move further away from the cage as other hunters had now focused their attention on it. She cast a sideways glace at Gabriela and added "And uh.. ditto dood. You were the first to snag this ******** and it looked like a b***h to handle. Was just the two of you for quite awhile there. Respect." It did seem easier now that there were four of them holding the cage and it wouldn't take long for the abomination to be destroyed.

"Ah, well we can't pick and choose when these things happen. And of course! If anything it just makes the afterparty all the more sweet," Julio said as he gave C a wink. He caught that tone of hers and couldn't help but smile at it.

As for the land beyond the portal, yes it no doubt was a creepy place. Potentially a completely horrible land. But that didn't stop him from wanting at least a peek inside. See just for himself what the land of horrors was like.

Shifting his grip a bit, he looked to the beast they were holding down. It seemed to still have quite a bit of fight left in it, despite the number of hunters that had smacked it for charges so far. Certainly, it was lasting longer than a few of the other caged creatures.

"Anyone else need some charges? This one here is still good to go!" he called out.

Shock of the century.

Remy was late to the party.

After leaving the training grounds, Remy had needed to take a little time out. She'd never made it to the cafeteria to meet up with Reuben. There had been some revolting emotional issues she'd had to power through before she could even consider herself good company. Whatever. By the time she felt up to meeting up with Reuben there had been a startling buzz from her phone. Remy had immediately gone to her dorm.

Remy hated feeling dazed and worthless, but by the time she made her way to Reuben after heading through the portal it looked like everyone had everything under control.

"This is bullshit."

Eid stood off to one side, arms folded over his chest as he watched the little monster-lovers hack and slash away. He didn't trust anyone that willingly took one of the bastards into their brains and bodies. Flashy though these 'weapons' might be, they had been monsters once, and to Eid they always would be monsters.

It was just ******** stupid that all the division leaders had been tainted by the things.

The big man was unmoved by the proclamations of the end of the world and the thought of death. They went up against death every damn day; was he supposed to wet himself every time? He was way, way past needing to sober down, have a bit of existential hand-wringing, and so forth.

One hand reached down into a pocket. His thumb rubbed idly over the lightly etched surface of his standard brass knuckles. His proper weapons - runic weapons, not ******** monsters wearing metal bodies - were hanging from his belt. Gauntlets, good for wrecking people's s**t. And some s**t was definitely going to get wrecked today.

((Posting, but feel free not to interact for now; I have to go to a meeting so I won't be around. If you don't mind waiting, though, feel free to quote me! @3@))

Ferdinand Bolinsky wasn't actually angry, but you sure as hell wouldn't guess it from the way he walked through the ranks that day.

YOU'RE bullshit, Sloane!” He stabbed a finger in Remy's direction as he walked briskly by.

He had no idea what she was talking about, but he didn't need to. His tolerance for childish behavior was at an all time low, and Ferdinand seemed to have no patience to spare. Even for Remy, who he generally liked. As far as Ferdinand seemed to like anybody. The other Sun hunters might receive a brief nod if they were doing what they were supposed to do, or a violent screaming session if they weren't. Most simply went ignored as he stormed down the ranks in his steel-toed boots, occasionally kicking a passing trainee in the a** to push them along.

As though just to remind them that he could. That there was somebody watching, and the time for games was over. Somebody had to break up their damned tea parties if any work was going to get done, and Jonathan sure as hell wasn't going to do it.

“Get your tits in line and do your job, Sloane, or do I need to get you a ******** tampon, first?” Ferdinand didn't wait for her answer. Instead, the Sun leader simply hefted the massive battle axe over one shoulder, moved on ahead, and skillfully kept down a small smile.

Don't get attached, Liam's first words after he'd become a division lead echoed in his mind, wiping the expression clean. Ferdinand didn't understand the words back then, though he'd nodded solemnly and accepted the post anyways. Now, he looked around at the assembled faces, and he knew what lay ahead of them. He watched as they spoke, even laughed, as though tomorrow was promised to them

Now, he understood the meaning of those three simple words, and what Liam hadn't then had the heart to mention.

Because most of them won't survive.

Ferdinand's face hardened as he resumed his inspections. His voice cut through the din of preparations like a snare drum as he barked out orders.

”Smoke 'em if you've got 'em, ladies! Sun Hunters, charge your weapons and fall into formation! Your balls might belong to your women, but your asses still belong to me!"

((I'll only be able to post once every few hours during work hours, but Ferdinand is available for interacting and will be addressing the Sun Hunters before the next round in a bit.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like Ferdinand to harass your hunter. <3))

[[ WOLF IS TARGETING CAGE 5]]

He backed off for a moment, letting another (Reuben) get his weapon's fill. All the while, Skoll snarled and growled, muttering about blood and thunder to his bonded.

Why do you let him take feast before me? I am alpha here, snarled the Fear weapon. Wolf stretched his fingers under him, patiencely waiting. It was hard, given his weapon's bloodlust was slowly creeping into his mind. He'd done a lot in the years since he'd acquired Skoll to keep his sanity under the tide of the weapon's primal need for all things violence related.

Yes, and a good alpha lets those of the pack feed as well. Let him finish, then you can have your fill, he replied in as a calm voice as he could. Which was hard, given the growl that was starting to form in his chest.

Once Rueben satisfied his weapon, Wolf struck again in silence. He sunk Skoll deep into the monster, a gleam of feralness in his eyes. It was there for but a moment before he jerked his hand back. Skoll gave a pleased sound, now full and ready to fight. He heard the familiar yelling of Ferdinand and fell into formation behind him.

And tried to not glare too hard into his back. Wolf had... issues, with that man. Something to do with the yelling and authority. Skoll let out a chuckle and then fell silent, or as silent as he could get.

By the time he got his gun ready for a second shot, all the creatures where tied down and being attacked for charges. It had happened quicker then he expected so he simply shouldered the grappling gun moving to pat Gabby on the shoulder. He didn't say anything, not right now anyway. Instead he moved to inspect cage five.

He had seen one of these before, he didn't have a name for it, but the last time he saw one a Reaper type promptly showed up and blasted a hole into the side of the room. They wrote it off as a gas leak, but damn if it wasn't a big one.

"How many more of ya'll need a hit on one of these things?" He looked around towards the FEAR Hunters "This one still has a bit of fight in it left."

With that said he stood up fishing around in another pocket, the Sun Leader had a valid point and he pulled out a cigarette box lighting one of the thin white sticks while he waited for the next phase to begin.

[[ ADAM IS TARGETING CAGE 5]]

Ah, the frenetic energy of the situation had Adam nervous. The previous night had been all fun and good, but now? Now he and all of his comrades were waiting to stop the apocalypse, and to die. Y2K seemed like such a silly thing now. He nodded to the Runic hunters grappling with the monsters, raised Petia to his shoulder, and shot the beast within one of the cages. His hands were not trembling. He was only working.

[[ ADAM IS TARGETING CAGE 5]]

<< The time has come, my friend. We will show them what we are made of. >>

Instead of responding, Adam took aim again and calmly shot the beast again. Petia thrummed with life as he lowered her, beginning back into the crowd.

<< Aah, it feels so good... >>

Adam smiled and chuckled. Nervousness had been replaced with pride. This was what they had all become Hunters for. Sacrifice. They would save the world again and again through generations, and so few of them would survive to tell the tale. He found himself again at Zoey's side, knowing that Cliff and Isaac were liable to protect her. These four had worked so often together, though, Adam in a separate faction, that he felt some kind of comradeship with them. It would be best to stay by those he wished to protect this time, he thought.

"Was this what anyone expected?" he asked nobody in particular, sounding almost upbeat, "Our time of reckoning is at hand, so on and so forth." He lifted Petia against his shoulder and she sighed.

<< Teamwork may not save you this time. >>

What do you care? You'll survive this regardless of myself. Of the others.

<< Perhaps, perhaps... >>

"You always did have a way with that staff," remarked Warden mildly as Billie laid down another hit on the creature, one that sent it reeling backwards squealing. He had come up behind her, silently watching as she had fought. Warden's arms hung loosely by his sides, the sai swords clinking gently against his leg.

He slanted a gaze down at the woman beside him. She seemed so strong now, calm and collected, but who knew what would happen later on?

Would they even survive?

"Billie," Warden started to say, but a loud, familiar voice broke into his attention before he could finish the sentence. Ferdinand had pushed his way brusquely through the crowds, the Division Leader of the Sun Hunters looking as he ever had, an enormous battle axe resting against his shoulder.

Warden watched him for a moment, his gaze flickering, but then he turned back to Billie.

"Duty calls," he said wryly. He leaned down, and in the midst of everything, gave her a very light kiss on her lips - a surprisingly public gesture of affection, quite unlike how he usually acted. Warden's fingers gently trailed down Billie's face as his own closed off, a muted, neutral expression shifting into position.

"If anything happens..." he said quietly, but Ferdinand's voice was there again.

" - ...and fall into formation! "

Warden grunted irritably. He dropped his hand, shifted the sai sword back into position, and straightened his shoulders.

"Don't go anywhere without me," he told Billie firmly - and the real meaning behind the words could not have been clearer. He gently batted her shoulder with a fist, turned, and made his way towards his division leader.

"Reporting for duty, sir."

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Marsh stood quietly, watching Em at first as she talked to Cliff; then, as the conversation seemed to grow more personal, he looked away, eyes flickering over the assembled crowd. Good on Em; she seemed to know just how to make others smile, one way or another. He wished he had that talent. He was okay at patching folks up, lending a hand, doing something rather than saying something. But knowing what to say was a powerful thing.

He didn't know how she handled it without breaking her heart every time. Hell, he didn't really know her. Maybe he could fix that later, be a real friend; except that that just left him open to hurt all over again when she died. Or he'd die first and leave her hurting. That was the problem every time. Make a friend of another hunter, and one of you was going to be left grieving. Don't make friends, and you were left alone, getting steadily less human as you locked yourself up tighter and tighter. Four years and he hadn't solved it. Probably never would.

Even in her agitation, Miyako sensed his melancholy; she paused and crooned wordlessly at him.

Funny how sometimes it was what wasn't human at all that could comfort him the most. Marsh ran the lashes of the whip slowly through his hand again, the tight knot of new-old grief in his chest loosening again. How the runic hunters dealt, he'd never know.

"Looks like we're closing in on ready," he said aloud, to Lowe and to anyone else standing nearby.

John also paced the lines, watching the hunters as they went about their charges, a pair of Jutte tucked into his belt as he paced and watched. If he'd stepped in, it would have been easy enough for the Division Leader to hold one of the cages down for a charge, but that would help nobody and he was well aware of this.

He was less likely to b***h someone out than he should have been, however. John instead would approach any hunter he felt was having a hard time and correct their stance for them before pushing them forward - whether they were a Moon Hunter or not, John had to watch out for everybody's backs, and from the way he carried himself it was obvious he was inclined to do just that. But as Liam had said, there was a difference between Sacrifice and Suicide, and he'd scraped that line before, only to make it out only worse for wear instead of dead.

They all had at some point. If you didn't have a scar somewhere, you were either new, or Jonathan had covered your back exceedingly well.

The Moon Division leader patted Ferdinand's free shoulder heavily as he passed by, offering the man a nod, but no words - by that point in time words were near meaningless between the duo. There was a language spoken there that was extended to no others in a gesture that seemed so simple. John kept eye contact for a moment longer before he patted the shoulder again and kept moving.

Soon his own voice boomed - loud, powerful. Perhaps it was reinforced by how quiet Jonathan was, a man who spoke in short sentences and not often. He could sometimes go days without being heard.

"MOON DIVISION. Get charged, stay alert and don't strain yourselves."

His tone said everything his words did not - orient yourself with individuals from other divisions, know who is around you, if you're watching their backs, hurting yourself would render you useless.

"BUNCHA PANSYASSED RUNIC HUNTERS!" The voice wasn't loud, per se, but it was saturated with disgust. For several more experienced Hunters, they recognized the face immediately as Lars Cohen, possible the most shallow-minded, temperamental Hunter ever to grace Deus Ex in the last century. And unfortunately, a Fear Hunter. The current rumour about him was that the man had stolen another Hunter's weapon and reported them as "dead", but since there were so many Hunters who died on duty on a regular basis, noone had actually gone to confirm said rumour.

After the fourth warning and probation, Lars was supposed to be stripped of his weapon and given a permanent retirement. The problem was his weapon, a creature so temperamental it would have no other partner. It didn't help that his faction leader, the mist leader Nkiruka, was off on another private mission with her more personalized team, as always. None of the other faction leads wanted to have to deal with this man, again.

He snorted as he neared the creature in cage 5, spitting at it. "Yer just as ugly as them Runic Hunters. Prolly jus' as useful."

And the thing simply stared back, lurched forward, though it was, in comparison to the others, relatively tiny, and snapped all the strings attached to it.

It was free.

- Target 5 needs to be eliminated before it reaches the portal and escapes! It seems the faction leads are very busy preparing themselves and cannot expend the time or energy currently, and expect you to do what of course you do best: clean up duty. (Not to mention this is such a tiny problem, it really shouldn't have to be noticed by the leads)
- Hunters may choose to roll a 100-sided dice once this turn. If they do so, please match your dice roll to the results below. Both Fear and Runic Hunters may do so!
1- 20: You try to attack the creature, but it is too fast, and you slip up, nearly hitting someone else (whomever is in the post above you, quote them, that is the person you nearly hit)
21 - 40: Success! You get a hit in! Roll 2 12-sided dice and subtract 6 from the amount right after this post to see how much damage you do. Make sure to post the boss's cumulative HP at the bottom of your attack post.
41 - 60: You try to run over to help, but there are way too many people around. You lost the target as you try to clear a path around the crowd.
61 - 80: Success! You get a hit in! Roll 2 12-sided dice and subtract 6 from the amount right after this post to see how much damage you do. Make sure to post the boss's cumulative HP at the bottom of your attack post.
81 - 100: You try to attack the creature, but it is too fast, and you slip up, hitting someone else (whomever is in the post above you, quote them, that is the person you hit).

If there was one man that Remy Sloane respected above all others, it was her division leader, Ferdinand. He had a presence that spoke more than words ever could. Today was no different, and she harbored no hurt feelings when he spoke to her. She appreciated the fact that he'd never babied her just because she had tits -- something that couldn't be said for most of the men that Remy had come across throughout her life.

"Yes, sir," she called after him after he'd passed.

Unsnapping the leather loops that kept her chains tethered to her hips, Remy grunted and kept an eye out for anyone that might need her help holding down the cages. For now she'd keep her head down and her mouth shut.

Mostly.

With the creature dead (finally), Lucas was able to give his arms a rest. Good, he wouldn't be going into battle too sore. He glanced around, noticing Cliff playing his harmonica. A frown creased his face, if he remembered correctly that wasn't a good sign. But he wasn't precisely the best with dealing with emotions or junk like that so he decided to leave well enough alone.

He scanned the crowd, about to go lean against a wall to wait for something to do when his eyes lit on something interesting. It was always good to find some sort of stress reliever before a big mission. For some that was canoodling with their sweethearts.

For some it was breaking up those touchy-feely moments. He swaggered on over to the couple. "Why Mya, who is this lucky fella?" He reached out to pinch the man's cheek.
