Daemon looked at the picture. "I deduce that the woman has bad body oder, hence the lifted arm. Her finger as far too long, so she may pick her nose. The children, I see, are fasinated by this amazing feat."
Daemon paused enough to let them wonder if he was serious, then concluded. "She's dressed in clothing that is quite elemental, as muggles believe us to be into 'mother' nature." Daemon snorted. "I never recycle. I see she had a long stick. Some sort of wand, I assume. The children are mixed between fear and fasination. You can see smoke behind her, as apparently, we are fire-proof."

(Yep. Oh, and I took the picture idea from good ol' Homeschool Hogwarts. The first time I did research for everything, stumbled upon these and I thought it wouldn't be so bad to share)
''I suppose you lot are all correct in your own way. Strange that you're all seeing it from the Muggle girls perspective. Is it because of their scared face ? Or maybe isn't more like astonished ? Hesitant ? The pointy nose giving you some second thoughts, dark face, necklaces that could be interpreted as bones ?'' she pointed out each of the features. ''Can't the wand be interpreted as a cane ? She looks old, she might need it.'' Desiree shrugged her shoulders. ''Maybe she's telling a story and dressed up for the occasion !'' Well, she could've continued like that for while but she guessed they understood her point. ''Miss Trumaire guessed right, it is from the Salem Witch Trials. I'm not sure if it is a correct representation of Tituba, a slave who was one of the first three people to be accused of witchcraft at the trials. She's one of the very few that did not get hanged, rather controversial since she confessed to 'the capital offense'.''

''On a side note, here's some more... Rather strange pictures. I don't know actually what the man from the left picture was trying to do, some magical act suppposedly. Or even why Muggles think that pulling out a rabbit from a hat can be such an extraordinary feat. Magicians, witches and wizards have been portrayed as bevolent and malevolent, practitioners of true magic and false trickery. Unfortunately, they've been punished harshly. Even if the Witch Trials didn't actually accuse a real person from our community, as would've been easy to escape their fate, it is only a hint of the atrocities that awaits us.'' Desiree was getting a bit tumbled in her lesson though. **Might've skipped something... Bon sang !** She pondered over her reasoning. Oh.

''Can someone tell me how the Witch trials started initially ?''

Harmony Trumarie...

Harmony pondered on it and recalled her reading. "When Betty Paris the daughter of a Purtain preacher got sick. A 'specialist' named Reverend Hale came when worries over her sickness arose, they thought witchcraft made her sick....and Tibuta was blamed."

Sparrow pondered this question and listened to harmony speak. She believed that was the gist of it and Sparrow was not too certain about this time in history she added, "I read once that these trials started in February when four girls became sick with ergot poisoning. This causes hallucinations which caused the accusation of their neighbors being witches, and since the people were religious and the Bible said you shall not let a witch live, The Salem witch trials began." Sparrow was unsure if this information was correct but she decided it couldn't hurt to add her input to the conversation.

Daemon rose his hand a moment." Professor. The image in your left hand is, I believe, is Sumerian. It was believe in that time, that we had tamed the great beasts, and were trying to assert power. Before Christianity, it was one of the few times we were actively persicuted." He gazed closer. "Infact I believe that is one of the images made for Gilgamesh. He was believed the son of a river God, if I recall."

Hello professor. I'm Steven and new to Hogwarts. Have I missed anything important?
PostPosted: Sat Jan 29, 2011 3:05 pm

((Great, thanks Daemon; I was trying to track it down... And this is History class))

Desiree greeted the new student, there always was one of them who decided to pop up unexpectedly. Glad to add a new spirit to their class. "Well Mr.Steven, you can sit down and start writing notes. We've already covered a previous lesson but I can give you a scroll so you can catch up. We are currently discussing the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Oh, I would appreciate you'd fill this little questionnaire sometimes soon." she handed over the first assignment, watching him scurry of to a desk. (Check out first page) "Also, thank you for the insight Mr.SaDiablo. It certainly cleared up things." she nodded in agreement. "Now then, Miss Trumaire and Miss Sparrow, you are right about one thing. Betty Parris became sick, that is true. But it is not proven she suffered from ergot poisoning, although most likely since convulsive ergotism causes violent fits, a crawling sensation on the skin, vomiting, choking, and--most interestingly--hallucinations. Because then, what would explain the other symptoms of 'posessed victims' later on ?"

Betty Parris, daughter of Samuel Parris, puritain minister.
Ergot Poisoning, Stress

"Reading was a popular pastime during the winter months. There was an interest in books about prophecy and fortune telling throughout New England during the winter of 1691-92. These books were especially popular among young girls and adolescents. In Essex, County girls formed small, informal circles to practice the divinations and fortune telling they learned from their reading to help pass the cold months. Can you guess ? Betty certainly created such a circle and practiced fortune-telling with egg whites and glasses of water. She and her cousin, Abigail Williams, became afraid of their fortunes at some point. That, coupled with family financial and social difficulties, likely caused to express their stress in unusual behavior." Which version was the closest to the truth ? If you over-analyzed, it would seem that these trials started off with petty things. A butterfly effect. "Tituba participated in these circles, storytelling tales and performed fortune-telling rituals. No wonder she was accused. Some say that she confessed because of that although fortune-telling is considered 'white magic' "

Background of Salem; Feuds. Seperation from the Town. Cold Winters. Neighbor Rivalities. Politics & Religion.
Why witchcraft ?

"Given the period, please explain to me why witchcraft was the most plausible cause. What drove villagers to accuse women, mostly, and some men ? What was the common factor between all the prosecuted ?" she asked to everyone. It seemed that there was a lot of questions that were answered and asked in this class. Desiree hoped she caught everyone's attention thoroughly.

Harmony Trumarie...

Harmony raised her hand and said her calm voice, "I'm not sure why muggles found it plausible...but weren't the prosecuted people from the higher ranks of society? I know some were landowners, and some single women...and the rich too were pointed out as witches, because here was one's chance to 'attack' those who they would normally be safe against them...hysteria was used as a weapon..." Harmony fiddled with her hands, and stared blankly at them.

Daemon SaDiablo

Daemon settled back in his chair. "Religion. Salam was on the boarder of civilisation. To it's west were forests where Native American's were said to perform their 'evil witch craft'.
Now the stories now say that Abigail William's was, for lack of a kinder word, a bit of a tart. One tale says she started it because she was in love with another womans husband. They'd had an affair but the wife had discovered it. Being 18 and feeling herself more attractive, she let it get out that Elizabeth Proctor had put a spell on John Proctor, who was himself hung. Their white serving girl.." He paused to remember, "Mary, I believe. Her last name escapes me, found her work tiresome, and wanted to be among Abigail's friends and thus safe from the 'witchcraft' threats, assisted in her downfall."

How do see yourself when you graduate Hogwarts?
I dunno yet. We'll see where life takes me...

Is there a particular branch that you will work into?
See the last question. It would seem strange to attach myself to a career just yet.

Which wizard or witch is your greatest inspiration?
Hmm... Great question. This sounds very overused, but probably Albus Dumbledore.

Is there a particular event that you love the most?
Not really. Maybe I'll love one after this year.

Which one greatly repulse you ?
I don't know yet. We'll find out.

How do you feel about ''History of Magic'' ?
It's very important for us to know things about our past. This helps us to have better judgement going into the future.

"Hello Miss Zandra, just pick a seat and try your best." she pointed randomly somewhere in class. "Miss Trumaire, it is true that some of the prosecuted were higher ranks. Why ? Well, simply jealous, envious or eager rivals who wanted a good way to get rid of them. Nothing can be proved, but out of the bewitched girls, Ann Putnam has apologized for her acts 'commanded by Satan'. She didn't feel ill or vengeful against the ones she accused, but people today think that her parents actually influenced her." Desiree didn't want to talk too much, the students had to think for themselves. She wouldn't be next to them during the mid-terms ! Especially since she had some projects in mind for her class... "And Mr.SaDiablo, you must be talking about Mary Warren. She started having fits but was threatened to stop by Proctor. He believed that it was all lies, which led to his execution when he himself was accused of witchcraft. But I think you must be confusing the muggles play The Crucible with the real Witch Trials. Abigail Williams was only eleven years old during the trials." she could've went and talked on and on about each of the accusers, the victims, the executed. It was getting harder to keep quiet.

Lena

Lena listened carefully to the discussion about beings and which creature was a being. It was quite interesting, listening to all the different opinions the students had. She had her own little opinion on the subject but decided not to share it since it was similar to the others and the debate was so interesting she didn’t want it to end. However, after a while Professor Desiree began speaking and the debate ended. They began talking about other subjects, like the witch trials, and after 10 seconds Lena was lost and did not understand a word that was being said. Discouraged, Lena sighed and put her head on her desk, trying hard to listen and trying her best to understand, but History of Magic had never been her favourite subject so it was hard to pay close attention.
