"So, is your dad into poisins or healing? Potions tend to go both ways." She gave him a look that wasn't exactly suspicious, but definitely wary. Did he have the same abilities? Just how much had his father taught him? If anything? Tessa huffed. If he'd had anything like that in his arsenal, then wouldn't he have used it by now? Not that she suspected he ever could. Poisin was a cowards weapon, and Gabriel was no coward.
"They all sound amazing." And she meant it. Just to add to the guys discomfort, Tessa stretched, her hind claws digging into the unconscious idiots fur, cutting little claw marks before she settled back. "What are you going to tell them when you go back? You know we can't have you talking about the Order, right?"

Ears twitching, a little smirk flicked across his lips. "Both. I've heard he has an interesting history with his experiments, but we were never given any details." He chuckled softly. "My siblings and I used to joke that dad's potions were the reason we were born." They would never know how close to the truth their joking had been...
Watching the other male's fur get cut into, he couldn't help but smile. Not at the cutting, but the comment. Yeah, his family was amazing... Maybe she could meet- His smile faltered. Was he really about to think that? His brow rose at her questions, and he barked out a harsh laugh. "I'm not telling them anything!" He raised a hand to brush at his jaw. "Can you imagine? 'Where have I been? Oh, I was going to be killed by this gorgeous assassin, but I was able to convince her I was innocent. We went to this creepy island where this even creepier guy told me that he would have my head on his wall as a decoration if I couldn't prove myself within a month. Then, I went off with that assassin to go find this guy who framed me just because he was jealous. We knocked him unconscious so that we could take him back to the creepy island that I never want to see again as long as I live so that he could confess to being a complete moron. Oh, and I was chained to the assassin the whole time.'" He laughed sourly, shaking his head. "Yeah, that's a tale to tell over dinner. No. I'll figure out something to say."

Quintessa gave a brief chuckle and shook her head against the root at her back. "How crazy would that story sound to someone who didn't live it?" Then she couldn't stop laughing. If only her commanders could hear him now!
"However..." She rolled onto her side and grinned, looking every bit like the cat who got into the cream. "It couldn't have been all that bad, if you were chained to a 'gorgeous' assassin. Imagine if I were a big, burly male? With a uni brow, a hunched back and buck teeth?" Did he really think she was gorgeous? She knew she had valuable...assets, but the opinions of twits didn't matter nearly as much as Gabriel's.
"Hrm." She tapped her bottom lip and rolled her eyes. "How about this for an alibi - You were walking along, minding your own business, when I crossed your path. I was in a panic, crying or whatever-" She waved her hand "-and you, being the knight you are, tried to help me. However, I was being chased by thieves who wanted the deed to my late father's ship, the only tie I had to him, and you went with me to deliver it to my Uncle to keep it safe."
She nodded. Completely believable.

His brow rose as Tessa grinned, and a faint bit of color rose to his cheeks. Gorgeous? Had he said that out loud? ..Hopefully it was too dark for her too see him blushing. Sitting here thinking that someone who could kill him in two seconds is good-looking... "Yeah. That would be torture right there. He would probably smell funny, too. Like over-ripe bananas."
He looked toward her as the story rolled off her tongue, a little smile rising further. "Say, that's not bad. I think they'd be willing to believe that. Thanks." Yawning, he stretched his arms over his head; that is, until the manacles pulled. He looked over at the chain that joined them together. He hated being chained or tied to things.. but he could tolerate this. It was becoming easier to handle, the longer time passed... "Too bad your uncle couldn't afford to compensate me for all the trouble I went through to get you back to him," he said with a little snort of amusement.

She felt her arm being tugged up, and reminded herself of why she was there in the first place. As nice tolerable as it was to chat, they were here to bring in a rat who had abused the system, and almost cost Gabriel his life. As a Captain, she needed to be on her guard, always ready for the next phase, ...but that could wait til morning.
"With my father dead, how do you expect us to pay you? After all, without him, the ship couldn't sail and make any profit. Just think of it as a charitable deed for a pretty face," she teased. Tessa shifted back to her root, this time making sure her back was against the trunk of the tree and her hand on the shaft of her spear. "Get some rest; I'll need you at your best tomorrow. With any luck this ordeal will be over, and we can get back to our lives."

He snorted again, shaking his head. "Yeah, yeah." A pretty face... He'd met lots of pretty faces. Tessa wasn't just a pretty face anymore though... Gods. He had to stop thinking like that. He tucked his legs under him and laid out where he could. "Tip top in the mornin'," he said cheerfully, dropping his head onto his arms. Back to their lives? ...His life wasn't going to be the same after this.
When the sun started to peek through the branches, the yellow fox blinked dry eyes open and groaned. He had such a headache... What had he drunk last night? He blinked to clear his vision, looking in surprise at the thorny branches surrounding him. What-? His gaze darted around, and eventually landed on the pair with him. That's right. They'd surprised him. Were they still asleep? Maybe he could get away? Or better yet, just kill them both now, and not have to worry about them later. Gabriel was supposed to be dead by now anyway! He eyed the cattaur's spear, the only weapon around other than his hands, and slowly reached toward it...

Tessa yawned and rolled over, her hand rubbing up against her face. Her dreams had been sweet, but brief; a softer life, with just as many missions, but a warm place to come home to at the end of the day. A nice house, a warm smile, big, sexy golden eyes-
The assassin jerked and ripped herself out of sleep's hold, but it was too late. Her finger's reached out for her spear, and grabbed only a fistful of air. With slow, conscious movements, the growling cat moved between the armed fox and Gabriel.
Two things were holding her back from lunging; the manacle and the spear. If she jumped, Gabriel would weigh her down, and they would both get hit. Then there was the spear. It amplified a taurs natural magical ability, and while a fox wasn't the most powerful being in existence, they had enough in them to do damage.

Not used to living on an edge, Gabriel hardly stirred at the tug to his arm. The growling made his ears twitch and his brow furrow, but it wasn't enough to wake him yet.
The yellow foxtaur grinned as he felt his hand make contact, surprised by the surge of power he felt. What was this thing? No matter. It was in his hands now, and he was able to give the growling female a cocky smirk. "Not so tough without this, are ya?" he crooned, eyes darting between the female and the male she was chained to. Chained? That was odd. He put a hand on his back, feeling the uncomfortable little cuts. "So, you know I ain't sayin' nothing to get me in trouble with that freaky boss o' yours." He pointed the spear at the sleeping fox. "Why don'tchya just let me finish the job that you were supposed to do, and I'll pretend this never happened? Won't even ask for my payment back. Let ya off easy."

A lump of lead settled into Tessa's gut. With every tug of the chain that yielded no response from Gabriel, the fur on her pelt stood straighter. "You'd be surprised." She snarled, popping her fingers as she extended her claws. This was bad; really bad. "Why don't you tell me why you hired an assassin over a petty squabble? An assassin, mind you, that works under a strict code that you knew would come back to bite you?"
She moved to cut him off from Gabriel, and gave a tense laugh. "Easy? Ain't gonna happen."

The male tipped his head. Explain? "I don't hafta explain myself to ya. Ya had a job that I paid ya ta do, not ta ask stupid questions. It wouldn't be biting if you weren't such a girl." He snorted. "You wouldn't call it petty if you were the one in my place, watching someone try to take what's yours."
Sighing softly, Gabriel slowly shifted around. A good night's sleep had been just what he'd needed. Yawning, his ears twitched as he registered the voices talking. Tessa's and- His eyes popped open, torso snapping upright with alert eyes. "...Well. This doesn't look good," he commented idly, slowly standing.
The male snarled and held the spear more firmly as Gabriel woke. "Not good? Always acting so cool. You big idiot. I'm gonna have your hide before this is over." He turned his scowl to Tessa. "Your's, too, since you seem intent on doing this the hard way."

Quintessa took a shaky breath in an attempt to steady her nerves. Acting rashly never helped her before, and it wouldn't do her any good now. This was her element; her time to shine.
And then there was Gabriel. "Stay down," she warned with a hiss. Taking a step forward, she advanced on the yellow fox. "He's not the idiot; you are. Look at yourself. You were ambushed by the doofus while he was chained to someone else." Slowly, her orange eyes began to shift into a lightning blue. "If you were smart, you'd follow along like a good little boy to save your tail. But your not, are you? You're nothing, but a big jerk!" Tessa shot her hand out, reaching for the spear....

Brow rising, Gabriel looked at the back of Tessa's head, pausing before settling back on his haunches. His muscles were tense though, gaze darting between the two in front of him, his arm sticking out to give his chain partner some slack. So what was he supposed to do? Just sit back and watch? His teeth peeked out from between his lips, a growl rising as he glared at the yellow male. Wait.. doofus? He stuck his lip out without thinking about it.
The male's snarl grew. Who was this woman getting so upset? Why was she so upset? His eyes widened slightly when he noticed her eyes changing color. What the hell-? He flinched when the female jerked forward, and then reacted by throwing his own arm forward, aiming the spear for a slash while trying to dodge her grabbing hand.

Tessa could only pray that his growl wasn't a sign of Gabriel attempting to 'own' the situation. So long as he stayed down, away from the fight, she could keep him safe. Right? Fat chance.
She dodged, but not fast enough to avoid the slash that crossed her torso. Her chained hand went immediately to her wound, but the other grabbed the spear and sent a bolt of energy up the shaft. She only hoped it would be enough to do something....

The fox's eyes lit up as he saw the wound open up, encouraging him to try again. He felt the spear halt as it was grabbed though, and his grip firmed instinctively. The shock shot up his arm and he grit his teeth. Having been shocked once by her already, and so recently, it didn't seem as bad as before. It simply made his muscles tense further. He cussed loudly, giving the spear a firm yank to try getting control over it again.
Of course, Gabriel couldn't not notice the yank on his arm as Tessa went to cover the gash on her torso. He was instantly back up on his feet. Being chained like this was holding Tessa back. It was his fault that they were in this mess. He hadn't chosen to become a target, but there they were. What could he do though?
His ears perked, and he grinned sourly. "Good day to hunt some deer," he said loudly, ducking down and shooting forward, slipping underneath the spear and into the other fox's legs. He prayed that Quintessa would remember their hunt yesterday. One of them on the deer's body, the other at the deer's head. It had been a quick catch. They did it once, and they could do it again.
Naturally, Gabriel's words had drawn the angry male's attention. Falling right into Gabriel's wishes, the bald fox turned his focus downward, distracted from the cattaur as he had his legs knocked out from under him. One hand grabbed at Gabriel's arm, while the other dropped the spear without thinking, turning into a fist and aiming for a pale cheek of his adversary.

Quintessa dropped her hold on the spear to ready herself for an attack that never came. Instead, she felt movement on the chain, and just as soon as she was about to yell a warning at him, Gabriel shot forward...with what could only be described as a brilliantly stupid plan. What if he got himself killed?
She rushed with the chain, snatching up the spear before it could even hit the ground. Before his punch could land, she had the weapon's shaft at his throat with her weight now pushing him down onto the ground. Her claws dug into his flesh, careless with what and how much she tore into.
