...What?

That was... that was no queen. That was a bronze. Layla stared wide-eyed at the dragonet. How was this possible? Everyone had said that... it was... it was... She'd thought that Kaveth would know... Didn't queens know when their egg was gold, or did they go on colour and size like everyone else had to? She supposed they must, the gold looked quite stunned. A bronze... It wouldn't want her. Layla's heart sank down into the pit of her stomach. How was this possible? How had nobody known? Had something like this ever happened before?... It wouldn't want her. Only one more egg left.

Right now however, she couldn't tear her eyes away from the bronze to look at the streaked sky egg... As she took in every detail of the large dragonet, despite her disapointment that she didn't have a chance with it, a slight smile tugged at the corners of Layla's mouth. Well, the girls who'd been going on about how the queen egg was meant for them since the clutch had been laid were going to be a bit red in the face...

Her smile faded again, as with another thump of her heart she remembered that this dragon could not possibly choose her either... That left only the streaked sky, and she had got the impression that it didn't like her in the least at the Touching... She hoped she was wrong...

How?

How hadn't they known?

Suspended somewhere between shock, disappointment that this was another dragon not meant for her, and fear that the last one wouldn't be either, Layla stood in silence. If nothing else came out of today, she supposed, at least she'd be able to say she was there when everyone thought a bronze was a queen.

By the egg.

Jadamirei stared at the bronze that came from the egg everyone had thought was a gold. Hysteria almost bubbled up in her chest, a choked half-laugh almost spilling out among the mutters. This was... Shards.

This was amazing.

Verianne looked at the people muttering and panicking. Hadn't this supposed to be a gold? Well. Well.

Shells. Tofir just stared. But at least he wasn't the only one, he noticed, once he recovered sufficiently from his shock to look around at the other attendees. That was definitely not a queen, coming out of that egg. It was...an enormous bronze. He couldn't help but be amazed and at the same time amused. Weren't the queens supposed to know which of their eggs contained a queen? Looks like there was lots more to learn after all. Why hadn't he brought note-taking tools?

Kaatan couldn't do anything but stare at the large bronze that had emerged from the Queen's egg. Or, what was thought to be, at least... Another bronez. No queen... Another bronze... It was yet another Hatching that just hadn't gone the way everyone expected. No one was severely hurt, and there hadn't been any fighting - not really - and plenty of surprises... But this... this was too much.

It was time for the gold then and Marcillus watched with baited breath along with the rest of those attending the hatching. Who would the gold pick? She wondered idly if the hatchling already knew coming out of the egg or if they had to wander a bit before choosing - either seemed possible when you considered the events of this hatching so far.

And the egg hatched and a big dragonet stepped forth with aplomb, such a beautiful bronze hide....

Wait, what?

Marcillus blinked and tilted her head, inadvertently stepping forward in her double take of the large newly born bronze. That... was not a queen. Everybody had said the big egg with the golden metallic sheen was a Queen, a gold dragon... but that was obviously not a queen.

Immediately feeling bad for it, she glanced around at the looks of shock and displeasure that were plain upon people's and even dragon's faces. That... well, that was terrible. To be born to such expectation and then met with shock when your truth came out? It was a familiar story to her and she offered a smile of encouragement. Perhaps this mixed bag of a welcoming into the world would not effect him? She'd gotten such a calm impression from it when she touched the egg that Marcillus was reasonably comfortable believing the bronze would get by unruffled.

Lucky boy who Impressed him, then! She'd not been with the Weyr very long but she already knew he'd be (in)famous throughout his life.

Wait what?! That egg, the gold egg, it was...it was a bronze? Well, needless to say, Lelia was just as shocked as the next person. What had happened? She'd never heard of such a thing. Well, this certainly was a memorable hatching. She blinked back her surprise, her shock, and looked to the Weyrwoman, the Weyrlearder, to Kaveth and to the bronze, who seemed the least surprised out of anyone. Shards, that was a huge bronze! Certainly handsome, he would make someone happy, just...not her. Lelia felt her heart sink. That was it. The hatching was good as over, because if the last egg, the sky blue egg, had a hatchling even half as hostile as the vibe she got from it, it certainly wouldn't want her. Well...at least she'd tried? She'd done everything asked of her, and had tried her hardest. There was always next time, right? Right? She didn't want to think about that right now. She sighed and counted slowly to ten. She could deal with disappointment, it would just take a little time.

Resting his back against the table leg, Kylar relaxed with his dragonet dozing off half in his lap, half stretched out on the sands, her head resting on his thigh. He watched as the Hatching commenced around him, as new riders led their companions to the tables for food.

His eyes focused on the distant queen egg as it started rocking, Kaveth almost looming over it. And when the shell shattered and the Queen hatchling blinked its eyes to the assembly, he blinked back.

A huge dragonet, it's skin gleaming bronze, sat before the agitated Kaveth.

Wait . . .

Vespereth's hunger had at long last been sated, and in the lull while they waited for the last two eggs to hatch, Cass found herself nodding off, comforted by the warmth of the sands and the quiet breathing of her dragonet where she had pressed up against her legs and then plopped her her head in Cass' lap. Sooo cute, she thought to herself, stroking her lovely green head contentedly, half asleep already herself.
The blond jolted awake, though, when the golden egg finally cracked open. She yawned and looked at this new hatchling, eager to see this new queen...She only blinked though, and wondered if her eyes weren't fooling with her after so long on these bloody hot sands...

Feeling her rider's surprise, Vespereth stirred and yawned widely, looking around to see what all the commotion was about. When her blue whirling eyes landed on the new, very large, bronze, though, they sped up excitedly and she jumped to her feet, trumpeting her welcome.
'Morgath! Morgath is here! Fiiiinally!' she said excitedly.

Cass then recalled how close Vespereth's green grass egg had been to the gold, and realized it must have been out of fondness, and not necessarily out of need for attention (though she was sure that had something to do with it too) that she had been placed there. Cass smiled warmly down at her green "Alright, dear one, hush now! Let him find his, you can talk to him later!" she said laughingly.

Folen made reassuring sounds as he unbent Skanath's tail and rubbed the portion that had been stepped on. "It's all right now love, just take your time and you'll be less likely to trip."

The young man was so caught up in comforting his dragon he didn't notice the bronze hatching out of the gold stag egg until the murmurs rose from the stands. Glancing up he found himself gazing with amazement at the enormous bronze standing on the sands. "Well now, that was unexpected."

He chuckled giving Skanath an absent scratch. Folen couldn't recall a time when an egg of such size had been so misjudged for color. Looking over at the weyrwoman who was stoic as ever he wondered what if anything it might mean for the weyr. There had been a lot of hopes riding on that egg.

T'rus had just begun feeding Akerth, the brown eating at a deliberate pace, when the queen egg hatched. He turned to look, though Akerth showed no similar interest, and was so surprised by the bronze hatchling that for a moment he lost all poise and simply stared.

The queen. That was to be the queen. And...

He'd never seen a bronze so large. That egg when he'd touched it, it'd seemed so calm. And such a bronze... it could fly any queen ever shelled. They might have--. The longing hit him, sharp, fierce and cold. Hands that had been carefully distributing meat clenched into fists.

T'rus. I am what you need. We will lead. There was no insecurity there, no jealousy at the way T'rus looked at the hatching. Akerth seemed completely void of any petty need for reassurances. He knew what he was capable of. He knew what T'rus was capable of. That was all he needed to know.

"Yes. I. Yes." T'rus jerked his attention away from the bronze, a motion that seemed almost painful for him. Then his shoulders squared and he was smiling that confident, friendly smile of his. "Let's get some more food in you before that false gold eats it all."

Vespereth, he is busy. Hush and sit quietly. Akerth's mind-voice was firm without being angry, he sounded more than anything like a strict, but not unaffectionate teacher. Patronizing, yes. Cruel, no. He loved his cluchmates, in his own hidden way.

Oh, that was unexpected. But actually somewhat funny, really, though Ngaran had to choke back his laughter and jam it away so that he wouldn't get completely and utterly slaughtered. Instead, the only sign that he was amused could be seen with a dull twinkle in his eyes as he looked over to the newly-hatched Bronze, wondering just what he was going to do.

The new dragonet seemed polite enough, causing Ngaran to inwardly sigh. There hadn't really been any dragons that were in nature similar to him, he thought idly--all of them had been seemingly pleasant ones. Oh well, the Weyr could do with some decent natures to temper out the more fiery ones in its number. Ngaran was still mildly disappointed, though.

Now that the initial shock had faded, Lelia amused herself by looking over the stands and all the people, looking just as shocked as she had felt. Still felt. What would happen, the Weyr needed that egg, they needed a queen, the weyr had yet to recover from the plague, and now it seemed as if it might be making a comeback. Oh, that poor bronze. Everyone wanted him to be something he wasn't. Everyone wanted him to be something else. It wasn't his fault, it couldn't be his fault, there was no one to blame, who could have know? Kaveth herself had assumed it a queen egg, and surely she was the one who would know best.

She looked over at the towering gold. Poor Kaveth, she must be quite startled too. Everyone was. The whispers and the murmurs going around were not of happiness, that was for sure. Shock, awe, disappointment, disbelief? Any of those moods seemed appropriate. Yes, they should be happy to have such a fantastically large, seemingly pleasant bronze, but a bronze didn't lay eggs. Still...he would be a benefit to the Weyr. All the dragons were, and they should be happy to have him. She managed a smile in his direction, hoping he would find His, and that the blue sky egg would hatch and find Its too. Lelia was ready for all of this to be over.

It struck him that this bronze, who clearly didn't seem to care that the atmosphere of the sands had completely reversed with his arrival, had stricken almost all chances of Layla and Lelia Impressing. He felt for his friends, and the disappointment they must have felt at this monstrous bronze's appearance. He looked to Lelia, a look of understanding on his face, then back to the bronze. I can't stop staring at him... he's huge! There was a pang of envy toward whoever he chose - the size that that bronze would grow in to... Absolutely endless possibilities.

Now that Betteth had been fed, and was content, the two moved a little ways away from the feeding table, into a position where Iloraz could see both the unhatched blue egg, and the bright golden queen egg. It was mere curiosity now, it wasn't everyday that a queen hatched, and the other, well, if it hatched well, this would be almost a perfect hatching, with only minor injuries caused.

He watched as the Golden egg began to break, cracks appeared near the top and streaking down the sides. This was it, an important event for the Weyr, a good omen compared to the disaster of the previous clutch, but as the shell broke, and the hatchling stepped out, it was obvious that something was wrong. Well, perhaps not wrong, but misjudged. That was no gold, but a bronze.

It struck Iloraz as fairly amusing, as it was the only egg to have been left mostly untouched by the male candidates, and he wondered briefly if that would affect his impression. Would he be more drawn to the girls? For some reason, he didn't think so, but if the bronze did, wouldn't that be a scandal. Telgar had enough problems with regular female riders.

Mine? Do you like him better than me?

"What? No, of course not." Iloraz responded quickly, caressing her head in reassurance. "You're the only dragon for me."

Roseth nudged her sister again. Some queen, she said smugly.

Despite the fact that Jasrai had declared herself uninterested in the hatching, she continued to report the goings-on to her rider, and her tone as she described the new "queen" was positively gleeful. It almost made up for her earlier spite toward that pretty little green that everyone was so impressed with for snapping at the spotty brown. Oh, what a delightful thing hatchings were!

"Wait, what? You mean that's not a queen?" Jasrai asked, making sure she'd understood her dragon correctly. Flynx and Sati, sleeping on her lap, sat up and protested her sudden movement. So did her arm. Protest. Not sit up.

I said that, didn't I? Roseth replied. Aren't you sorry you aren't here?

"A little," Jasrai admitted. "But I know you'll let me borrow your memories, won't you?"

I shouldn't. But I will.
