Agreed.
Haha, you'd think Sesame Street wouldn't want to promote wanting to be left alone either, but whatever. XD
I like Frodo's overall personality more than Sam's, but the things he does just piss me off way more than the things Sam does. I don't necessarily dislike either of them though; they're just not my favorites. Much more fond of Legolas, Gimli, and Pippin.
Haha, only vaguely? XD

It's ok to be "independent," on Sesame Street. xd

Actually I agree with that. I think I find Frodo much more interesting, and in other circumstances would probably like him very much. Whereas I'd find Sam dull and slightly annoying (but annoying in a way where, you are friends with them - usually through mutual contacts - and of course over time you just like them, but they make you palm/forehead A LOT!). But yes, throw in actions, and it's like OMG FRODO YOU IDIOT! And then it's go Sam go! You save the friggin day! Mostly by default because OMG FRODO PUT THAT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xd

Legolas and Pippin are my favorites, followed by Arogorn and to a lesser extent Merry. I also rather like Elrond and Faramir.

Bwahaha. XD
Yes, exactly! It's like the ring made Frodo go fail and the adventure made Sam go win!
Ooh, Aragorn, Merry, Elrond, and Faramir are also some of my favorites! <3 Probably the next batch after the three I listed above.

rofl

I KNOW! Like had they had the normal hobbit life they were supposed to Frodo probably woulda been an intriguing and fun guy, and Sam would have been a stick in the mud. Damn ring, rings always ruin everything! Girls are so crazy, struggling to get these stupid things!

Woot! Haha, they are some pretty awesome characters. I really do like Gimli too, I just don't love him. I'm also biased against dwarfs (as in the mythical versions, not the medical versions), which is part of the problem. I've just never liked them. They just get depicted as short - generally unattractive, treasure hungry, malevolent beings (even Snow White's were pretty surly). So I like Gimli as much as I possibly could being COMPLETELY biased against his race. xd

OMG I know right?! XD
You know biased against a race is just another way of saying RACIST!! *gasp* I was never too fond of dwarfs either though when I was younger and only watched Snow White for my dose of them. XD Dungeons and Dragons and Lord of the Rings made me quite fond of them and their spunky personalities though.
PostPosted: Tue May 25, 2010 4:46 pm

*shifty eyes*...noooooooo, never! Haha, ok I know I totally have my racist qualities, but I don't feel so bad admitting my prejudices against the imaginary races.

bursts into Avenue Q's Everyone's A Little Bit Racist

See, the problem with dwarfs for me, is they always end up in competition with elves. And then elves totally own. Like Gimli and dwarfs in a world where there was no Legolas or Elrond or fantastic elven amazingness might have been full of awesome. But there are elves, and I compare them, and the elves just win. Elves are pretty and talented and magical and wise. They are impish and conniving and full of wonderful trickery. I've just never had a dwarf stand out for me. Gimli is great, but then why would I look at him when I can look at Legolas? Nope, I'm sorry, I'll just have to keep the RACISM going. xd

Heehee, sadly I think that song is true.
I think the competition between elves and dwarfs thing just kind of adds to the awesomeness of both races for me. I always love pairing characters with rivalries (be them friendly ones like Gimli and Legolas, or cold-blooded ones like Kaiba and Jounouchi), so with the natural competitiveness between elves and dwarfs, both races always give me at the very least an interesting friendship to get amusement from. And I feel that both races also each win in their own ways, elves being more awesome and pretty, with dwarfs having more personality and humor. They compliment each other for me, so though I do prefer elves, the elves make the world even better for me by helping make dwarfs more awesome too, and the dwarfs actually contribute to how much I like the elves. =D

Oh it SO is. As are most of the songs in that musical.

I like rivalries too, but when things are just TOO contrasted it takes the interest out of it for me. Legolas and Gimli were adorable the way they played off each other, but it was just no contest. And while the friendship they developed sparked fuzzies, it also left the final avenue I could have clung to, bitter enmity. They eventually become unequal friends - so yes while elves and dwarfs still had interesting conflicts, the two of them lost any major appeal for me. I will agree that Gimli does help make me like Legolas more, haha, so he serves a purpose!

Oh the sadness!
I agree that things being too contrasted, or at least having too clear-cut of a winner, does make it less interesting, but I always like to look at all aspects of the characters, and to me, there are just too many favorable qualities in both races for me to dismiss one. Yes, elven qualities are more the type of thing I go for, but I still love other qualities in dwarfs. They're not the same, but still equal to me. Kind of like how with Kaiba and Jounouchi, Kaiba wins in just about everything: Dueling abilities, wealth, intelligence, height, physical abilities, drive... so even though it seems like a clear-cut win for Kaiba no matter how you look at it, Jounouchi still has qualities that Kaiba just doesn't, ones that are really important to me: The ability to make friends, a sense of justice, humor, love and loyalty that can spread to many people, overall happiness... Kaiba may have all of the worldly things, but Jounouchi has all of the things that make the soul complete. They both win in their equal-but-different ways.
Yay for Gimli serving a purpose though! XD

Hahaha, yea, that's not gunna do it for me. Haha. I mean with characters like Kaiba and Jou (or Yuki and Kyo are another favorite for me in this type), yes there is one who always wins. But the other is close. Competition makes sense. I do like that the one character ALWAYS manages to edge out in the end, because I like watching the other character being further frustrated. I'm shallow, in reality I approve of all those nice, loyal, dog like qualities to an extent. Living with someone who didn't have them would be irritating. But the qualities that I of course usually swoon for before going for that whole rounded out personality is talent, intelligence, strength, etc. Yea you should totally judge a person by what's on the inside, and I do...eventually. It's just eventually is usually longer than 3 movies, so in the fictional verse, I just don't have the time to give Gimli the fair shot he probably deserves.

Of course maybe one day I'll read the books...then we'll see.

Ah, so it's more that Legolas and Gimli is a much more clear-cut competition to you than the mentioned anime characters? I see, I see. Heehee, I love those traits though; I tend to like most traits that aren't evil, and even some of those. XD Poor Gimli. *gives him sympathetic huggles*
Aha, oooh, the books... yeah, I tried reading them once. So. Boring.
PostPosted: Thu May 27, 2010 11:12 pm

Whereas I like traits that are powerful, talented, twisted and/or all of the above. xd

Yea, I don't know if I'd get into those, but we (my family) somehow managed to lose Fellowship. We had them all, but we lost that one. And because we "have" it (maybe - it's possible it got lost amongst books that suffered water damage because someone *cough*dad*cough* did not store them intelligently) we don't want to buy it again. But thus, I can't read the rest of the books, because you know, order and all. Even in things where it doesn't matter (and I think in this it does) I'm quite OCD. I read all of Pern in chronological order even though you can really read those books in any order, and they weren't even written chronologically. xd

I read The Hobbit though...so that's good enough right?

Oh, you twisted person, you.
Maybe check it out from a library, then if you get into it you have the other two at home to still read? XD I mean, I totally understand. I always read things chronologically as well. But there's always other means to read books.
Speaking of books, I kept forgetting to tell you that I finished A Lion Among Men quite some time ago. I will admit I warmed up to the story as it went. Like it's still my least favorite, and damn I really didn't care about Brrr's back story, but all of the stuff involving Yackle was pretty interesting, and at least the last fifty pages or so were the intense page-turners that I felt the other books were. Even talked about Liir and Trism, and Nor's finally gonna look for her half brother! <3 But I'm gonna say those last fifty pages just *barely* made it worth suffering through the rest of the book. The deal with the invisible cat really caught me off guard too; I'll give them that.
Yeah, I've read The Hobbit as well. Liked that one way better. Granted, I never did get full-fledged into Lord of the Rings. I think I got about fifty pages into the Fellowship and the adventure hadn't even started yet. I was drooling from all the information they gave about MiddleEarth. It was like how some books of the Old Testament are comprised of listing who's the descendant of who. I tried that back at the beginning of high school, so I may have more patience now. For all I know, getting past all of that droning part could lead into a really amazing book. I mean I already know I like the plot and characters from the movie, so maybe I'll give it another try sometime.

And damn proud ^_~

Yea maybe, but again there are several things ahead of it on the fail list... razz

I kept meaning to ask you about that. That's exactly how I felt, I was so bored during Brr's stuff, but it soon became evident that this wasn't the last book. So it was easier to get through in the hopes that the 4th book will be more interesting. And yes I did enjoy the Yackle stuff, I wish she'd talk more and allow Brr to shut up. I don't see a lot of Brr's back story becoming relevant to the plot. At least most of what I disliked from the other two books I do understand how it connects and is important, so that's my main issue. But yea, the end of Son of a Witch SO made that whole book worth it for me, it was substantially better. Whereas A Lion Among Men was only slightly better so I probably won't ever make it through that book again. There are few cats I dislike, but invisible cat is one of them! EVIL b*****d!! I also dislike my friend Tricia's cat, but that's entirely unrelated.

Yea, perhaps. I mean in theory it's my kind of thing, but in execution I have several issues with LOTR the films, I'm not sure if that would be exacerbated or improved upon by the books. Hopefully I'll find out one day. I know what you mean though. I full on HATED Pride and Prejudice back in HS when I read it (Freshmen year, and it was of my own volition, so it wasn't even the awful essay or whatnot making it unbearable to me). When I had to reread it junior year for a British Lit class - and I almost skipped it, especially after passionately hating Robinson Crusoe. I was pretty sure I could fake my way through the test and just choose a different book for the essay. But I started it - the plan was to skim, and ended up totally in love, unable to put it down. Didn't finish Gulliver's Travels because of it (which was ok, could totally do the test based on reading everything else - including evil boring as frick Robinson - and having watched most of the movie in class), but it was worth it. I absolutely adore that book now. So sometimes it's good to give things a second chance.

Haha.
Yes, and I am so thankful it's not the last book. There just... wasn't enough answered. Oh, but another cookie I will give to ALAM is that it actually seemed to answer more questions than it brought in new ones, unlike the first two books. So things are at least beginning to wrap up. But yeah, the only thing with Brrr I could see potentially being relevant are those spirits he ran into in the woods. And that was at the friggin beginning! And yes, despised that horrible invisible cat! How could he do that to Fiyero and Elphaba?! crying
Yes, though I quite enjoyed Wicked back in Freshmen year of high school, reading it again relatively recently I absolutely loved it. I haven't really attempted to reread any books I exceptionally disliked, but I think I will give Lord of the Rings another try someday.
