Hanuvh motioned for his minions to stay behind and followed Jayara into the basement. He kept a respectful distance and watched. As for the man, he seemed too tired or too drugged to care what was going on around him.

YouTube Soundtrack: Prelude - Globus

Her fingers paused with hesitation before sliding a knife from behind the cuff, the same one used by the mage for the ritual that had torn her apart a year ago. By this point, its handle rested easily in her hand after many a night of practice, the only remaining object from a life she still wanted to hold on to and a memory she was not sure she wanted to keep.

Bindings from the man's legs fell away, allowing him to be propped up and seated against the wall. With as lethargic as the man was, she was certain at this point that she couldn't even ask what family the man had. Though she tried, only mumblings made it past his lips and to her ears.

She considered giving the unfortunate man something more to make him relax, her draught she used to sleep perhaps, but it surely would not work its effects quickly enough for this.

Temporarily, the small, shining blade went tucked into her belt as she unstrung her cloak and removed her coat, tossing both into a careless pile behind her before taking the weapon back in hand, crouching over the grungy stranger.

How do you want this done, Black Swan? Do I just end him? the ranger asked, unsure if her patron would even hear her words or if she would be left to her own judgement.

Soundtrack (Last.fm): Take Me Away - Globus

Immediately black wings fanned out behind the ranger on the floor just before the blade swiped across the man's neck. Even in his state it brought about a garbled gasp, his hands jerking upward. His eyes behind puffy lids rolled back just as the blade then plunged between the ribs in his chest and into a dying heart...

She waited. Watched as he bled out until stillness, uneasy tension and adrenaline the only fuel keeping her going. The memory of the mage's throat tight in her hand, being crushed against the wall, his life running down her wrist - she remembered enjoying that.

This was far from the same.

The basement was filled with wind, rushing past in a great circle and spiraling into the middle. For a moment all light was sucked inward and then it spread back out, as if something had just let out a deep breath. And in the middle was the Black Swan, as large as a person, wings folded, eyes red, and a shuddering human heart bound to its breast. It walked fowards, unfolding one wing and draping the leather skin and feathers around Jay.

He scooped up the man's heart, pulling it out with his beak, and draped it across his own feathered chest. It melted into the swan's body and the heart's beating grew steady and strong once again. Another year.

"My... my lord," Hanuvh said weakly, falling to his knees, "I... I had always hoped... if I may ask..."

He wishes for a blessing. This man has no heirs and fears for the safety of those he has taken into his cult. The striplings. Some he even fathered.... though they do not know it. Would you give him a blessing, my prodigy, despite knowing the lives he has taken in so many years of service?

Disgusted is what Jay thought she should have been in the Swan's presence. Beneath its solid wing she couldn't help but feel somehow relieved, almost comforted by the thought that whatever this being was - he had noticed.

She listened quietly to Hanuvh's pleas behind her and then the Swan's comment before slipping into thought.

She was instantly reminded of Micheal.

The winged ranger had to turn more than just her head to be able to watch the man who was now just seeing for the first time what he'd dedicated possibly a full portion of his life to. She wondered how one could go on like that, serving something unseen with little to no proof it was out there. She had even questioned it with her former mentor's devout following of Narktu which she had been somewhat raised in.

The blade was set on the dead man's chest as she pulled herself to full height, a glance up at the swan first before looking at Hanuvh.

"What is this boon you ask? Just words? Extended life? A child? Something better to protect the others?" Jay asked as she looked on at Hanuvh, almost uncomfortably, in a new way. She was more familiar to making decisions to follow or disregard. Not lead.

Hanuvh looked relieved to be able to address Jay. It was obvious he was in terror - and awe - of the Swan. At least by talking to someone... relatively human... it was easier.

"There have been," he said tentatively, "Other cults. In other cities. And I've seen many fall apart at the turn of leadership, either routed out by the city officials or torn to pieces from within. I will not see what I've built fall apart. I ask... for protection... for my successor. If the Swan... or the Swan's servant, could name the next leader... no one would dare question it."

That was one request she could understand. The old SouthEast camp, Chevelle, had possibly fallen for such a reason, way back when. Lately she'd begun to wonder if there was any truth to the Black Swan version she had been told for years though.

"Do you have a successor in mind?" Jay asked of Hanuvh. "Your years here have given you more insight as to who would be able to hold up in your footsteps."

"I... yes, I think I do." He nodded and then turned his gaze to the Swan and seemed to lose the ability to speak again.

Mortals. The Swan sounded amused. Your games amuse me. Allow me to assist... three feathers. Death - instant - irrevocable - will be contained within them. I will be interested to see how they will be used.

And the Swan pulled three feathers from his wing, letting them drop to the floor between him and Hanuvh. He turned, pulling his wings close and away from the ranger.

Until this time next year, little one. A word of advice - start using your wings more. You may need them. My... enemy... has a champion as well.

And the Swan retreated into the shadows of the basement, the dark areas covering him from sight and although Hanuvh seemed too stunned to notice anything, it felt like the Swan was still watching, apparently still amused enough to stay and see what happened.

The ranger was curious as well about the feathers on the floor, if not the least bit jealous, for there were a few names that she could immediately label with the plumes on the floor.

In due time she supposed. As the Swan said, she had better start getting comfortable with these wings even if all they could do was give flight. That and be her proof to the cults. But how would they be helpful against someone such as Sain and his favored?

Though she remained quiet in voice, her head still wondered about her abilities. When the Swan stepped back into the shadows, Jay stepped forward, bending down to lift the three feathers in her unstained hand, carrying them and holding them out to Hanuvh.

"I believe these are for you."

Trembling, Hanuvh reached out and took them. The first feather touched his palm and instantly dissolved into dust. Hanuvh sucked in a breath, stared at Jay with eyes impossibly large, and collapsed to the floor. The two remaining feathers fluttered to the ground next to him. He did not move.

In the darkness, something chuckled.

Death. Instant. Irrevocable.

The Lord Hanuvh was the first to receive this particular gift from the Swan.

"NO!" Jay shouted, forgetting the feathers and dropping the dagger as she knelt by Hanuvh, her wings flaring out behind her as she cradled the man's head in an arm. He was gone. She knew he was gone. After she had been able to pick up the feathers she'd never thought...

She shot a scowl toward the shadows.

"Why? Why kill the one person that could have told me more about you than any of those other... socialites up there?" she hissed while holding back other choice words, hurt, and confused by this turn of events, trying to ignore that she herself had threatened Hanuvh earlier. "Is this some sort of punishment?"

Maybe there was a god smiling down on Otiian that made him so very late to the happenings of the night. The meeting with the mysterious woman wound up going nowhere but late and he was irritated because of it. He strode into Hanuvh's house briskly and looked around expecting to see people around to mock his tardiness. The house was silent though. Not like a usual ritual night at all. His sharp eyes scanned the stairs before he called out. "Hello?"

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Pardon? I merely imbued those feathers with the essence of death. Perhaps one day you'll be able to hand out little feathers of your own from your wings... but for now, you handed him the feathers. He took them. And no one stopped to think -how- they would be triggered.

I'll give you a little hint. You can touch them because you belong to me. He belonged to this mortal coil and touched death incarnate. I suggest - heh - using kid gloves with the next two.

Now go on! You have a successor to name!

And with a last little chuckle the Swan was gone, for all Jay knew.

Jay opened her mouth to shout something, but there was nothing but an emptiness left behind in the shadows where she once felt the Swan reside. Filling the silence was another voice, one from up the stairs and past the door in the main room.

She looked back down upon Hanuvh's face, eyes still wide open, and shivered.

Slowly her hand crossed over his eyes as she whispered words of passing -ones she hadn't uttered for some time- by those once taught in ways of Narktu's fold.

"I'm... sorry," she said, finally giving in and accepting some of the blame for what had been his fate. "I... may not be the god of the hunt to usher you to the other side, and I may not have been what you expected for a Revenant..." She laid Hanuvh out on the floor in a more presentable fashion and crossed his arms over his chest. "I wish I'd known who you picked."

She shook herself off and then realized she had one more passing to attend, looking up and seeing what had been the first casualty. Quiet chanting followed a second time, though she left the man sitting so as not to lie in the pool of red beside him.

As she walked back toward the stairs to deal with those left behind, she spotted the feathers and dagger on the floor. The dagger she wiped on the sleeve already stained and put it away. The feathers she scooped up in her hand and looked over, twisting them in her fingers, what lights had not gone out playing upon their glossy reflection.

To one of these remaining lights, Jay walked over and lifted the glass cover, holding out both feathers over the fire.

"If I want to kill someone, I want it to be by my own hand. Not by some accident," she said, knowing what chances she could be burning away with the feathers, assuming they would burn at all.
