Band camp technically started yesterday, but yesterday and today were rookie camp. Full band camp officially starts on Monday.

This year is a whole lot different then I am used to, or the rest of the band. Our old schedule was Monday and Tuesday-Rookie camp 8 am to 3-5 pm, then wednesday-friday fullband 8 am to 9-10 pm, then the following monday and tuesday noon to 9-10 pm.
This year, it is Thrusday and Friday Rookie camp 8 am- noon, monday-friday full band 8:30 am-6pm. Not to mention today, where we had rehearsal 6-9. It was partially band registration, but it was extended into the first music rehearsal of any age group and sectionals.

I'm kind of excited for this year. We have a great show, and a visual tech who isn't in a different state, so he will be on-field with us to add or change stuff, let alone explain how it is suppsoed to go. Not to mention, our show is Beethoven. Epicness right there.
My section has 2 freshies. Unfortunately, it seems as if one has ability sucking powers. You see, the girl is basically horrible. I haven't seen ehr march yet, but I know she has an attitude(not what the already jerky section needs) and she cant play worth crap. The boy is a decent player, at least tone wise. He is apparently an excellent marcher. So, we'll see hwow it goes. We aren't positive either is goign to last.

I just finished the first week of band camp... one word for it, intense. our marching/brass staff member has decided that he wants to treat the band more like how he is treated in his corp (just not the schedule thank goodness). This includes actual cardio workout instead of just running, very picky marching basic along with learning drill, new weird stretches and balance practice, and doing crunches and planks to work our core muscles. I know alot of bands do this stuff already but for us this is like and infinite amount more than we used to do!

Pro: we already look and sound amazing, except percussion... it sad when the rhythm section can't keep rhythm...

Con: I'm afraid he is scaring the freshman they may get this idea that they hate it and I want them to continue advertising it to bring in more freshman but they won't if they don't like it.

anyway I may post again next week... if I survive. sweatdrop

This year I am REALLY... xd for band camp! Band camp for my band starts August 8-12 this involves everyone that is in band and color guard. Also it takes place at my school on the turf football field and band room. This year we are getting about 48 freshmen. So that makes a total of about 100 and something people in band I think with color guard. Anyways this year I am section leader and a squad leader so I have more work to do but I will also have more fun than last year. Especially since it is our second year doing a field show! biggrin

Today was the first day of band camp. I'm gonna die.

First thing we did: A 20 minute non-stop exercise routine involving over 200 pushups, around 100 jumping jacks, multiple across the field relay runs, around 50 situps, and finally 3 laps one of which was in a block running in step.

Then straight into fundamental reviews. We changed a lot this year with our style, so we had to go over little details that had changed, like feet together instead of having a 90 degree angle. (By this point I felt lgihtheaded, like i was going to pass out, and had to sit out for nearly an hour while I recovered. Ugh. I hate sitting out, but they wouldn't let me back in cause I could barely stand!)

After fundamentals, we went into marching stations, one forward, one backward. We went from slightly bent leg style to full straight leg style. I liek it. A lot. It looks great, even if it is a bit harder. And I personally think it is more fun!

Then lunch, then we went inside for music rehearsal.

Summer band started on monday, and lasts all the way until school starts (Aug. 22)
I was pretty excited because i just recently got switched to a new highschool that just opened up in my district (only sophmores and freshmans get to attend until next year) meaning we will be the first people to actually use the band hall. Being a new school, we had the facilities built to our needs; the practice field was built right next to the band hall (which is better than last years where we had to walk about 10min under the scorching texas sun to get to) I don't get burnt, i tan, like crazy. But i got used to it, now, everyone actually embraces their tans. Putting stickers all over their bodies, or wearing obnoxious socks.

We practice outside from 8:30-11:30, lunch, and then from 1:00-4:00 we have sectionals. Later when school starts, we'll be practicing from 3:30-6:00 (yay eek ) I can't wait until we get to start learning our sets! We're doing a show called 'Post Cards' where we play different types of music from all around the world:
1. Rio de Janiero
2. Hong Kong
3. French Riviera
4. The Big Apple
We even get one of those chinese dragons during the second movement!!!!

So far band camp has been amazing. We are working in an air-conditioned collosieum, which has it's pros and cons. For one thing our last day is on the field. >.< I am new to mellos but I am already adjusting to the new people really well. Also I didn't march last year, so I am glad to finally have a spot. Our show is southern (like us) and based on To Kill a Mockingbird, and I'm in love with it 100 percent. It has many french horn things. Counter-melody is my thing, more than melody, something I just learned. The mellophones say that a mellophone is a trumpet's weird-looking cousin. XD;; It kinda is, but I personally like it better.

Today was...interesting.

It was really stormy and humid this morning, cause it stormed hard all night. So, we went into the new gym at our school with ac. Which was nice, except our PT was harder and longer then usual to make up for the lack of heat. And we had to work extra hard or risk going out onto the flooded field.

Well, later on, we did a bit of a teambuilding activity. We usually do a few of these after lunch; various games that involve teamwork or some way of bonding, like Telephone, ghosts int he graveyard, an awkward version of freeze tag, or human knot.
Well, today we waited. instead of doing it after lunch, we did it as a last thing, right before we went home. What we did; students vs Adult staff and DMs in a game of sharks and minnows, with the staff and dms as sharks. We played twice, and second time our student strategy; tackle the sharks and hold them down. The funniest part of this; One of the only students who managed to grab a shark was our sax sl, who managed to grab her twin sister our assistant dm. I had a front row seat to that image, having gotten tagged by the BD. It was hilarious watching the dm struggle. Until she cheated and got our guard coach to come tag the sax sl.

Even though marching band camp doesn't start until mid-August most of the kids (including me) are rushed back from DCI championships, so the all of the drumline except the frosh are super tired and already in peek condition from the whole summer of competitions. The upper classmen are trying to get to know the frosh and the freshmen are trying not to die from the first day, when we get drill. The DCI kids are all still talking about how they thought should have won and then the snares complain about the newbies. The basses complains because they all seem to hate each other and the quads (me! and two others) just chill and make fun of the newbie snares and the frosh.

We all love each other but when there is only a little over 70 you try hard not to get on anyones bad side. Fun times.

Normally our band would go to a camp in Peebles, OH and stay there for a week. It was really fun considering it was in the middle of nowhere. We would sneak into each others dorms late at night and pull pranks and stay up talking til 4 in the morning. Last year a bunch of us dyed our hair different colors on the last day and we got home and our parents FREAKED!!! But unfortunately this year, because of budget cuts our broke a** school couldn't afford to travel to Peebles so we had camp at our HS. It was still pretty fun. we always had an activity at night and they tried to make it as normal as possible. On the plus side we got to go home at night and sleep in our own comfy beds and take showers as long as we want!!! razz

Today was the last day...really bittersweet, being my senior year.

I'm really proud of my band. We went from one of the worst to potentially one of the best. we don't have any drill on the field yet, but I think had we actually received drill, we would have most of the opener done by now. Our drill writer is being forced to rewrite it because he tried to send us the same drill from a couple years ago when our school did the same show, which he wrote the drill for. Our bd threatened not to pay him for any drill sets that look the same or close to, so he is completely redoing it.

Band camp was one of the hardest and one of the best. We have a lot fo high level marchers as our staff, including a perc tech who marched with Santa Clara and someone else, i cant remember who, that marched with academy. It might be the other way around, I forgot. And there might be two from one of those corps. They are all also college age or just above, which I like having younger staff, because they know how far they can push us and how to make it more fun for us. (its also nice having staff, since last year we had our "bd" and our new bd, who served as our trumpet instructor)

I also noticed that this year the band is closer. we are one big family. Last year, we lost that, because our "bd" pitted us against each other. She would single people out and make everyone hate them for stupid reasons. her secret motto seemed to be "our weakest link is your worst enemy."
This year, the staff is stressing encouragement and encouraging friendship. For most of band camp, we were asked to eat lunch as sections. It was an awesome bonding experience, since we got to know our sections better.
During PT, or bonds were definitely shown. Occasionally we would do something like a relay, and if someone was struggling, people who had already gone would cheer them on or even go out and do it again with them to help them finish. It was awesome to see.
Even people who were normally jerks to other people are better this year. Our director is stressing lack of drama. She understands that drama is likely and highly possible, but she is very strict about keeping it to a personal minimum. No attitudes, no talking back, no arguing, etc. She heard someone c**k an attitude towards a staff member and we were sent to standing at attention hell.

And we actually have a woodwind tech! First time in my whole 4 years of high school! Its awesome, and we all really like her. She is sweet and funny but she knows a lot.

And according to one of our staff members, yesterday was a hundred and hell degrees outside.

Our band walks across the street to the crappy middle school "football field", which is basically a giant patch of land with itchy grass, because our football players consider the high school field's grass to be "Their baby" and they don't want us scuffing it up. I mean, our football players can't wear CLEATS on the field, it's so "precious"
Ours actually just ended last week. Ours was Week 1: 8am-4pm. Week2: 8am-9pm. I was sad to see it go by so fast. T^T.
I have notable memories, where the cheap jerks who shipped the dinner to our school had "Mozzarella sticks", which were actually, string cheese and bread. Separate. Eventually people just cut the bread stick open and put the cheese in it.
I'm a freshman, so I'm still getting used to trying and failing epically at the drill. We have our first and second movements down, and 1/3 of our pre-game together.
Our show this year is calle "Fear", with the 1st mvment being about running from your fears, the second being about hiding, and the third being about coming out and conquering them. I'm excited for BOA this Octoberrr. O u O

15 days, eight hours a day in the hot sun, running fundamentals, learning the charts for our new show, memorizing the music, and conditioning. Thanks to all of that hard work, we get a 4 days off before the exhibition. Now the exhibition is two days away and I get hit by a ******** car!!! Broke my goddamn leg.

Well This year I'm a 9th grader which means I move up from concert band into marching band! biggrin I was all excited, until camp started. XD

Ours was for the first two weeks of august from 8 to 4 (with a hour and a half break for lunch) and it was exhausting! XD On the first day I passed out from either the heat or locking my knees during this hindu exercise which is supposed to align your body. I can't remember which but it was an interesting expierence nontheless. So anyways we practice in the parking lot next to the high school football field and the parking lot is set up like a football field with lines and everything. We mostly did fundamentals, memorizing music, conditioning, and stuff like that but on the second week around wedensday we started Drill and got the opener finished during a night practice on monday which means that the band is doing REALLY good this year as the directors said this hasn't happened in a long time. This makes me feel really happy because it means all our hard work is paying off biggrin I'm looking forward to the rest of the year 3nodding

My band camp just ended, it was only 5 days from 9am-2pm a scattered mix of marching and music. Compared to everyone else's band camps, sweatdrop we got the easy one... I think our Band director is trying to slowly build up the camp program trying to get people in band without scarring them away, which is difficult because music has died out in my city and now is slowly comming back.... on the last day (yesterday) we had a water balloon fight smile to bad our BD ran off before we could get him
