Quite suddenly, the quality of the voice changed. Even through the filter, a second, deeper tone was audible. "We know that he is trying to kill us because we saw it. Do not test us, insect." A second later, the connection was terminated.

Lex blinked, even more surprised than before. "We?" Lex thought out loud. He tried to reestablish the connection. "Supergirl? I'm not trying to test you. Right now, you're the only person I actually trust in this whole plan. Besides, I'm not in any hurry to have you try to kill me again..." he added in a quieter tone. "As you put it, I'd like to keep breathing, too."

Lex smiled once again. "TiVo, actually, in case your favorite show is on while you're busy threatening people with your scary voice. And I'm sorry, but I'm pretty sure that nothing short of divine intervention will get the Joker any genuinely entertaining punchlines. He likes his lame ones too much." Luthor shook his head. "You know, Deathstroke actually acted like I didn't have my own share of problems with that damn clown. That freak nearly killed me on that Hell world that Checkmate and the Suicide Squad sent us all to! Out of curiosity, did you heroes have any idea that they had planned that out?"

Lex genuinely laughed aloud when she told him about Wonder Woman's theory. It was a surprising human laugh, not at all sounding like the businesslike, cold-and-calculating Lex Luthor that he normally was. "No fetishes for me, thank you. No, I can work with him because, like we are to each other right now, he is a means to an end. I need someone who can be unpredictable, and doesn't mind getting their hands dirty. Joker fits that bill better than anyone else I can think of. If we can get Deathstroke to set aside his own dislike for the clown, the two of them could potentially come up with some ideas that would rival even the Batman's tenaciousness."

"You'd better hope that Deathstroke is fully on board," she said slowly, "Because Batman knows Joker just as well as Kal-El knows you. Better. Much better. It's almost like... He can get inside his head. He does that with other people, too. Friends, even. All the time. ... But it's never as creepy as when he does it with the clown. Maybe just because he's so... off. No one should be able to get inside a mind like that." She shivered, then paused, thinking. "We need more wild cards. People from the other universes, like that Gossamer woman."
