Elnara was quiet, thoughtful. She could remember her great-grandmother ... vaguely ... but she couldn't imagine her being wild and reckless. Sure, if one looked at Ulani now, one could still see her adventurous side ... but Regan had not been like that, not from anyone's account of her.
"Magic couldn't help you?" she couldn't help but ask Ulani, thinking of her own gift.

Ulani shook her head. "My Aunt Arwen tried using magic, but the injury was ... not physical ..."
She smiled at Lore. "There were times when I was impatient with Aliya," she admitted. "She was always the most difficult of my children. Terexin ... you didn't know him, but he was the next worst, he actually ran away from us for a while ... though, looking back on it, I suppose I don't blame him. Still, Aliya has always been the most ..."
She trailed off thoughtfully, then shook her head. "No, Terexin was the most reckless," she decided. "Aliya at least has not tried to live in the Human part of the Southland. I don't know how, but Terexin ended up in the major city, Berkner, and ..."
Of course, that had actually ended up being a fortunate turn of events. She laughed.
"Okay, so only Cowan and Adonai were sane," she grinned. "Ruwen wasn't bad, but she had her moments, Terexin was terribly rebellious, Aliya was just reckless."
She paused again, then turned back to Lore. "I'm not sure if you knew about my eldest three children," she commented as if she had surprised herself.

When she had mentioned it and Lore thought about it.... he couldn't recall if Ulani had ever mentioned her other children. He decided after a while in all the time he had know her, she had not.
"No..." Lore's glaze off for a moment before actually looking at her, "I don't think it's ever come up."
And it hadn't occured to him that she had other children, though if he really thought about it (something he was mentally kicking himself over) in all the time Ulani and Ulrich had been alive they must have had other children.

Elnara blushed and coughed awkwardly.
"Sorry," she smiled sheepishly up at Lore. "I should have told you ..."
But it had never occurred to her to tell him.

Ulani laughed. "Well then perhaps I should explain," she smiled, folding her hands comfortably in her lap, "or else you just might end up very confused. I'm not sure if you know how old Ulrich and I are, but we were born during the Second Age and are nearly four thousand years old. When we first married and lived here, we had three children: Cowan, who was killed in the Second War of the Races, our daughter Ruwen, who married and sailed with her husband to Laurëfalas, and Terexin, who stayed here in the valley with his wife and daughter. He was killed a few decades ago by the slavers ... it was only after that that Aliya and Adonai came along. Neither of them have ever known any of their other siblings."
She shrugged. "As far as I know, it doesn't bother them."

"That's okay," Lore patted her hand, "After all it never came up and so there was no reason before to mention it."
Besides it would have never occured to him to ask at any rate.
"I see now though, and now you have grandchildren... and it's just going to get bigger," he smiled at Ulani.
Well as long as they didn't move away that is, one never knew but he was sure the two would never be lonely, Aliya and Adonai with their spouses for sure were here to stay.

Elnara smiled at Lore and set her other hand over his, then stroked the back of his hand softly. Perhaps during this year with just the two of them, they would be discovering more, not only about each other, but about the people around them, than they had ever expected to.
"Do you yourselves miss the eldest three?" she asked Ulani softly, fully aware that it might not be the most sensitive of questions. But she had her own reasons for asking: she was still getting used to Celebor being gone so much, and she could never imagine never being able to see him ever again.

Ulani smiled at the both of them.
"I do miss them," she replied quietly, "every day. Cowan and Terexin are dead, Ruwen is alive and well, but I miss her just as much as the others. She is the one that I know I may never see again, nor hear word of ... as strange as it sounds."
She paused.
"On the other hand," she added, her smile growing brighter again, "with Aliya and Adonai, as well as their families ... it's growing easier. And I do always have Ulrich. Without him I would be lost."
She giggled at Lore's comment. "And I can't see the family getting bigger any time soon," she winked at him. "Not for a few more years anyways, when Adanedhel grows up."

Lore smiled at that, "And the years will pass and you'll see then."
After all he was from Gaia, once they left it could be years before they saw anyone again, at least to the people here. Even though it could be a few weeks for them.

Ulani seemed intent on keeping Lore and Elnara there for as long as she possibly could, but after dinner, when the sun began to set, Elnara apologized for the two of them and said that it was getting very late, and they should be getting back to their house, as they still had much work to do before settling down for the night. Ulani still insisted on giving them a parcel of food (cookies, by the smell of it) before sending them off, and as it turned out, it was very nearly dark by the time Lore and Elnara finally left the house.
Once they were outside, Elnara giggled softly and reached for Lore's hand, the package from Ulani safely beneath her other arm.
"She didn't seem to want to let us go," she smiled as they walked at a leisurely pace. "Do you think she'll be like that the whole year?"

Lore chuckled and had to laugh softly at that, he did admit Ulani did seem to want to keep them around for even longer. Even though he had to admit it was a wonderful trip.
"It's probably just from not seeing us for so long," he replied with a grin, "So not the whole year, but certainly for the first few weeks."

Elnara giggled. "Well, at least she'll give me time to get used to the new kitchen before you're subjected to one of my meals from it," she teased him. "I've gotten so used to Gaia and electricity ... it will be a change, going back to an open flame ..."
She blushed softly and looked away. "Though I'm sure it won't be hard, considering how long I lived like that."

"I'm sure it'll be wonderful," Lore replied putting an arm around her shoulders.
He coughed a bit and blushed because he knew how his cooking skills were.
"At least you cook, I've spent a good amount of my time eating out... and if I made anything it was a sandwich. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a good sum for my apartment seeing as nothing in the kitchen has been used.... except the fridge of course."

Elnara laughed and leaned into his embrace, resting her head on his shoulder.
"I suppose that's one thing about Gaia," she giggled. "You can eat out ... here, if you can't cook, you starve ... everyone can cook, to one degree or another. The only cooking I ever did for anyone else was at the cafe. Mostly only for the children ... though occasionally for you."
As they reached the house, Elnara paused momentarily to admire it once more before reaching for the door handle to let them inside.

"Well it doesn't help I let whatever little cooking skills I had dwindle after taking the library position," Lore chuckled as he stepped inside with her.
He paused for a moment to close the door behind them, to keep the cool night out. Even though it wasn't bad and it wasn't like they would be feeling it yet.
