Gabrielle was no earth bender but she could feel as well the ground trembling. She calmed down, thinking quickly. "Master Dwarf. In my state, we cannot face them in a frontal confrontation as such." The smoke was getting closer, their number and strength was unknown, but she did not want to take the risk.

She knew those hills, they had brought her hope. "We should reach those rocks quickly." she pointed to a rock gathering overhanging over the path. From there they could at least measure the situation before attacking, plus they would have the element of surprise. Before waiting for Grim's agreement, she launched her horse towards the rock. It did not take long to reach them. There she dismounted and attached her horse nearby. Then she climbed to observe the column of demons rushing in the foothills. There was no doubt in their destination: the barrier.

The woman looked at the dwarf. "I think we are going to have some fun." she smirked with pain.

((sorry for taking so long ... sounds like a plan! ))

The dwarf had nearly been yanked from his position when his companion retreated back behind the rocks.

Listening to Gabrielle, he snorted in response.

"Lass, I never've ran from a fight afore, an' I'm not about ta start now."

Stepping out from the cropping of rocks, Grim began drawing a hasty rune on the ground as the rumblings grew louder and louder, distant roars growing closer still.

The rune on the ground quickly resembled a mountain range with a pair of eyes peaking from behind the range.

The first wave of demons were rushing out of the forest edge. Grim stood, twisting his rune staff in an intricate pattern in front of him. He brought the weapon high above his head then slammed the head of it into the ground. The dirt and gravel began to shift beneath him.

The leading demons began to close in, their teeth barred and snarling as they thought of their prey.

Grim remained still.

The fastest of the small pack lunged into the air, prepared to rip out the throat of the dwarf.

Suddenly, Grim's entire body turned to stone and shattered just before the beast struck him down. Before the monster could recover, the stone-form of the dwarf appeared on the rocky hillside.

"By the blood of the Earthmother!"

With that booming shout, spires of the earth shot upwards from beneath the lesser demons, skewering them instantly. They attempted to reach the dwarf that had become one with nature, but the earth blocked their way, pillars ascending to bar their path.

The next wave of lesser minions were crossing the mountainside now, some greater demons following behind them.

While he dealt with the lesser minions, he hoped his companion would be capable of fending off the larger ones at least long enough for him to assist her.

Gabrielle sighed at the dwarf's reaction. She was in no way running from the fight. Not her! How could he believe such a thing from her?! She was putting the situation into their advantage by having an idea of the situation before the fight. She smirked. Master Grim was a dwarf for sure. Stubborn even if that might have cost him his own life.

As the first demons met with Grim, Gabrielle could not help but appreciate the quality of his earth bending. But she was not here as a mere spectator.

Drawing Eosy and Aqual, Gabrielle scanned quickly beneath her. Maybe after all the fact that they split would play in their advantage. Grim seemed to be handling the situation up front with numerous but less powerful demons. The ten more powerful ones constituting the rear guard would be hers then.

But Gabrielle frown a second. Two things disturbed her.
First, despite her result in the Twilight Tournament and the strength she had acquired, she was still wounded and even fragile, especially her left arm.
Second, in the horizon, there was still dust heading there way. The cloud seemed to be moving slower but she had a bad feeling about it, a darker and stronger aura seemed to be coming from it.

Without hesitation Gabrielle jumped on the back of the demon passing beneath her. She was using the winds, to be quick and in movement at any time. Aqual in her left hand had already concentrated water on its blade and pommel. The water was even swirling around Gabrielle's left arm giving it strength and protection as she used it.

The Knight had counted that the effect of surprise would enable her to kill two without effort. Indeed the first one on which she landed, found itself with Eosy deep inside its neck before it even realized that something had landed on its back.

As the first demon collapsed forward, the one directly next to it turned its head to see what was happening. The opportunity was what Gabrielle was hoping for and casting herself to the side her blade vertical towards the sky, she passed beneath the demon's throat slicing it open. A dark blackish liquid poured out of the cut. Some drop hit Gabrielle's clothes which seemed to melt with a strange noise and disgusting smell.

Eight left... she thought to herself, casting a glance towards the horizon.

Gabrielle shouted at the other Knight. "Beware! The big ones have poisonous blood!" she did not add more as two beasts charged her.
Now that the surprise effect was over, she knew that the demons would be more difficult to slay. But to her surprise only two had turned towards her and two had stayed, ready to back up, but the four remaining did not seem to pay any attention to Grim nor Gabrielle.

"They are trying to escape!" she shouted, as she jumped upward using Eosy. A micro-tornado seemed surrounding her right arm and she cast it forward in front of the four rushing demons. It would slow them down, blind them and that was a low energy technique but it would not last. She was just trying to gain time.

Concentrating on the two creatures now beneath her, she separated drops of water which she shaped into tiny arrows. With a lateral movement she casted the arrows towards the beasts' faces. Piercing skin, lips, eyes, whatever was found in their way. Following the arrows, Gabrielle rushed downwards. One of the monster was roaring in pain as its eyes were bleeding. Its uncoordinated movements hit its neighbor. One claw came across other's face, bringing no damage but deviating the attention of the monster for the second Gabrielle needed. Her right hand jabbed Eosy in the monster's skull between the two eyes. She jumped backward in a flip to land before the blinded monster. Avoided the deadly claws, she stooped beneath the monster and sliced its torso and stomach open. Paying attention to avoid any contact with the blood.

The four demons up front roared and slowed down for a minute, but they were soon out of the cloud running. One looked back to the agonizing growls and leaving its three companions, walked back joining the two monsters which had stayed behind and had not wait for their partners to fall to charge the Holy Knight. Six... she thought between two gasps. Every movement was bringing back pain in her left side, but she was not ready to give up any time soon.

"Come 'ere ye bleedin' gits! Let the shocking embrace o' the Highfather take ye!"

As one of the greater demons closed in on him, storm clouds began to gather rapidly overhead. The fiend roared as he slammed his fist into the stone dwarf, shattering his body, only to see him appear a few yards away.

The falling shards of his proxy shot upwards and into the demon, protruding out of its body like knives, sending him crumpling to the ground. The second larger beast rushed him, only to have a piercing stalagmite shoot through its abdomen. Though the attack was not deadly, it began to claw at the large extrusion that stuck out from its back.

A handful of lesser demons heard its cry and uncharacteristically attempted to aid the fiend. Grim's rocky visage cracked as he grinned before making his battlecry.

"Murgoth's mighty hammer! Away with ye!"

A massive lightning bolt soared from the heavens and struck the stone spire that was thrust from the demon's body, electrifying the greater beast to death as well as the little one's attempting to assist it.

The dwarf quickly turned his attention to Gabrielle. She would need some help if the battle persisted. His body shattered once again then appeared near her position.

His stoneskin faded, the earth binding rune having run its course. With one hastily crafted rune, he lifted a massive boulder into the air.

"Lass! Make it wet! Then call for me bolt! Clear the field with the broken boulder! Do it now!"

Gabrielle was struggling with one of the demons which was strangely faster than the others. She had to keep jump side to side to avoid the poisonous claws and blood. She was tiring and she knew it. Using one of her signature technique but in a new way she concentrated on the wounds of her opponent, controlling the water in the blood, transforming the liquid in lethal spikes digging in the flesh, blood vessel and internal organs of the beast which after moments of pain and non-understanding collapse dead.

No time was left to the warrior as Grin called for her water bending. Team work was needed. Jumping back to a higher rock outside of the direct reach of the monsters, she kneed. Catching her breath and concentrating, she clenched her fist on Eosy, gathering water around her and her blade.

"Holy Spirit give me the strength!" she prayed with a low voice.

Once she was surrounded by water, she stood and slashed her blade in the air, casting the water net around the boulder. As the first drops touched the rock, she shouted.

"NOW!"

"By the bloody beard o' the Highfather!"

Grim cried out as he raised his rune staff into the air and slammed it into the earth, drawing it back out and spun it counter clockwise before pointing it towards the levitating boulder that was covered in water.

An arcing line of lightning shot down from the sky and struck the boulder with its full fury, causing it to shatter and break into countless shards. The shards shot in every direction, electrified and flying at blinding speeds.

The dwarf was no longer at his position but had melded with the earth and appeared beside Gabrielle just in time to carve a moderate shielding rune on the ground, which shot up immediately and protected them from the hail of electrified dagger-like rocks.

Demons all around screamed in agony as they fell to their deaths. Even the largest of them fell prey to the deadly combination of earth, water, wind and lightning.

When all went silent, Grim waved away the protective earth and paused for a moment to admire their work.

"Not bad lass, not bad..."

Falling down on his rump, he stared up at her.

"A warband o' that size could'na made it through the barrier without being noticed... I'm gettin' a feelin' deep in ma gut, an' its tellin' me that somethins' not right. Lass, I'd like ye to go to the barrier and see what is going on down there... I'll head to the Holy City on me own. If there's damage that needs fixin' then I'm their man. You figure out what let those beasties get through and try to get back to the city as soon as ya can... I know I can't stop ye from tryin' ta fix the problem yerself, but I'd wish ye'd consider comin' back to the city as soon as ye do find out what's wrong."

He stood up, standing half her height, extending a hand and a welcome smile.

"I guess this be goodbye fer now, lass. 'Til we meet again."

The elements and nature were obviously the allies of the two Holy Knights. Despite what those beasts represented, Gabrielle squeezed her hand on her pommel as the monsters shrieked in agony. She hated taking lives, but that was her duty.
A life for a life.
When she was in the fire of the action, she was feeling it less. But when she was watching death taking over beings, whoever they might have been, she disgusted herself.

Gabrielle nodded at Grim. "I shall go to the Holy Barrier."
She listened patiently letting her eyes lingered on the demons' bodies.

"Thank you Master Dwarf. We shall see again."

She bowed and headed in the direction from which the demons had come from: one of the pillar of the Holy Barrier.
