screamer You can write Chinese characters with just Windows XP? SWEET!! Where do you go to use it? Can you see the language bar in the lower right corner of the screen, to the left of the clock and system tray? It should say EN for English. Right click there and choose Settings..., then click the Add... button, and another window will pop up. Choose "Chinese (PRC)," then click the little checkbox next to "Keyboard layout/IME" and choose "Chinese (Simplified) - US Keyboard" (at least, that's what mine is set for), and click OK, and click OK again. This should add CH (Chinese) as an option in the language bar when you click it. So whenever you want to type Chinese characters, switch over to CH and type the pinyin with tones (i.e. ni3hao3 etc.), and it'll try to guess which characters you want, and it's usually pretty accurate, but you can also choose which character you want after typing the pinyin by pressing the left arrow key after the character appears. If you don't have the language bar or East Asian languages support on your computer, I can't help you, though. sweatdrop

Since conversation seems a bit dead, just thought I'd revive it a bit. What does everyone think about traditional and simplified characters? Which ones are prettier, more useful, easier to learn etc?
Personally, I think that trad. are a lot better looking, though not as useful.
With my pitiful knowledge of chinese characters and lacking hardly any real chinese education, I can't really comment on how easy it is to learn either but both seem to have disadvantages and advantages. Simplified is as the name suggests, simplified, but I hear that many of the meanings behind the characters have been removed.
For example it is harder to make a guess as to what an unknown word is as radicals and characters within characters have been cut down.
Of course, the above is probably all biased as my family are from Hong Kong and they use traditional characters there...

I prefer the traditional characters. I think some of the simplified actually look more complicated and traditional are easier to learn for me.

Traditional characters are more aesthetically pleasing, but I prefer simplified because they're easier to write and remember. sweatdrop
In my Chinese classes, we're learning both, but sticking with simplified for explaining things in class, etc. My professor last year said that it's probably easier to learn simplified, because it makes it easier to read traditional characters (for example, there are a lot of traditional characters that consist of the simplified character plus some other stuff around it), whereas it would be more difficult to read simplified if you're used to traditional.

Hermonie Urameshi I prefer the traditional characters. I think some of the simplified actually look more complicated and traditional are easier to learn for me. No doubt partly because the Japanese kanji are traditional, and you already know so many? smile I asked Wenxuan how to write (with correct stroke order) the main part of the words "door" and "gate", and she didn't know how because in simplified, it's soooo different. Looks like this: __ | || || | but also its reverse on the right, next to it. rolleyes
