Lin new Timaeus though he was only very little the last time she had met him. She wondered what it was like for him to have Halmir as a father. At least she was certain Timaeus probably wasn't scared of much.

"Who is Arahad?"

"I can only hope," Aliya smiled, cuddling her son close.

Adonijah rested his head against Aliya's neck, right up under her chin, as if being there could hide him and keep him safe from the people around him. He stuck one thumb in his mouth and stared out at Kara as if she were some sort of strange creature (which technically she was). Even though he was in his mother's safe embrace, he still looked as if he was thinking about crying.

Ahren beamed at Lin. "Arahad is my little brother," he said warmly. "He'll be two years old soon. I guess he wasn't born yet the last time you were here."

Adan giggled and led the other two downstream. "He's younger than Adonijah, but he's lot less shy," he told Lin. "You haven't see Adonijah yet ... but he's scared of everybody."

Kara laughed softly, "So how did you handle him Feng?"

She had to ask her daughter, since Feng liked playing with Aliya's kids.

"Well.. Aliya did most of the playing?" Feng giggled, "I just want to hug him and cuddle him, but I might accidentally make him cry."

"Nope," Lin shook her head, "I only saw when your Mommy's tummy was big."

She paused to think about what she had been told about Adonijah, but she was use to shy people.

"So, I guess Adonijah will have to get use to me first otherwise he's going to be scared me?"

Adan laughed loudly, and Ahren chuckled.

"Scared?" Adan grinned, his eyes sparkling mischievously. "That's an understatement! I swear, he's terrified of anything that moves, except Mama and Ada. He doesn't even like coming to me or Adwin or Alyse!"

"Well, Alyse tends to frighten him on purpose," Ahren pointed out thoughtfully, "so perhaps that's no surprise on her part ..."

Adan shrugged. "Still."

Aliya giggled and turned Adonijah so that he was facing Feng, Shael and Kara. "Come on, you, there's no reason to be afraid," she cooed to him. "They're Mama's friends! Nice people!"

Adonijah stared at Feng and Kara, then looked back up at Aliya, his expression asking Are they going to eat me?

"I should have brought Toshi," Kara murmured, "Someone smaller than him, I'm sure he would be less likely to be afraid of..."

At least she would assume so, if that wasn't the case she would be a bit worried.

Feng giggled at that, "Yea, Toshiro is the only small one left isn't he? All the others aren't Surprises anymore, unless you plan to have another mother?" she looked at her mother curiously.

"No... not this time," Kara murmured, "I'd hate to say this, but I'm going to have to actually not take in another vase. Nearly twenty children and I haven't even gotten pregnant yet."

"Maybe Yuki will give you grandkids then."

Lin thought about that, "He's worse than Miyu...."

At least Miyu got over it after a while, sure she skittered a lot, but she was getting better.

"Alyse tries to scare him? I don't think that's very helpful."

"It's not," Adan agreed. "But he'll grow out of it someday, that's what Ara-kun says. He says everyone does eventually."

"There's a ford just ahead," Ahren pointed at a place in the river where the bottom was only a few inches below the surface. "We'll fish from there. We usually catch something there."

"Did you bring bait?" Adan asked the older boy as he reached into his own pocket and pulled out a knife and a ball of string.

Ahren nodded and reached for a pouch that was hanging from his waist. "Get the string ready."

Aliya laughed. "Your time will come, Kara," she assured the other woman (was Aliya older than her by now? She must be ...). "Your time will come."

Shael's eyes grew wide. "Speaking of time," she gasped, "Kara, won't Donovan and Celebor be waiting for you by now?"

Kara thought about it, "Yes, they are," she stood up, having had bend over for the little boy's sake, "Though I don't know where Lin is."

Since it would mean Lin would have to find her own escort back.

Lin looked at the string curiously, since she wanted to know how one would go about fishing.

"What do we do with the string?"

Ahren grinned at Lin as Adan worked on unrolling the string.

"We put some bait on the end of the string," he explained, "and wait for the fish to come biting. Then we catch them. Simple."

"Ada won't let me have my own rod and hook," Adan told Lin as he reached for the pouch of bait from Ahren, "so we have to resort to our own imaginations, as Uncle Adonai likes to put it."

"Throwing knives," Ahren chuckled. "Here at the ford, they work wonderfully."

"We tries spearing them once," Adan muttered, taking a worm from the pouch and tying it to the end of the string, "but we missed the fish and got my foot instead. Mama said I wasn't allowed to get it healed by magic, or else I wouldn't learn my lesson, so I couldn't walk for a month, nearly."

"Didn't Lin stay with the boys to help with the swings?" Shael offered, also rising from her seat so that she could escort Kara.

Kara nodded at this, "Yes, she looked like she would enjoy that more."

Being active was something Lin seemed to make a job out of pretty much.

"So I guess, she must be wherever the swings are being set up."

It brought to mind a not so pleasant image, Lin wrinkled her nose at the thought of having an injury like that. Though she would have imagined it would have worked, since she heard of something like that being done

"Throwing knives...." she murmured there was a curious look in her eyes, because of course she never handled real knives and for that matter what were they planning to do knife the fish?

"They're setting up the swings just at the edge of the forest," Aliya offered, nodding twards the door. "Just across the clearing. You should see them as soon as you step outside, they're straight ahead."

Shael moved to open the door. "I'll be back for dinner, Aliya," she smiled as she stepped outside, pausing to wait for Kara.

"Find a rock," Adan told Ahren, looking at the water and trying to peer past the surface. "Hurry up, there's lots of fish here."

He could see the hand-length fish darting about below the surface, and he couldn't wait to catch one.

Ahren found a smallish rock and tied it to the string a few inches up from the worm, then slowly lowered it into the river so that it wouldn't scare the fish away.

"Watch," Adan grinned at Lin. "You'll want to stand back though."

And he and Ahren both inched away from where the worm was wiggling below the water.

"Thank you," Kara waved at them, "See you three later."

She waggled her fingers one last time at Adonijah before heading out the door. Poor little thing, she hoped Feng wouldn't try too hard.
