Emily beamed a thought to Brother.
Well, if you're not coming in, you really need to run. There's someone coming. You've got our scent on you. Run away till you find a crowd of people and then rub against them. Then come back and wait nearby. That will throw them off.
It was dark in the tunnel and the walls were lined with some sort of metal. Despite this, it was rather damp inside, and full of crawly things. Luckily Emily wasn't the squeamish type. It didn't take long until they were in a section of tunnel with a door in the top. There wasn't a handle, just a hinge. With a great shove she managed to push it open, and they were in the dusty shed outside the Outskirts Cafe.
There were a few more thoughts worming towards her. Diverge...Direction..Scent...Telepathy...Shi-
Emily snorted. There was a large stream of swearwords hanging in someone's brain. Clearly they were annoyed. She fumbled around in the gloom of the shed for a door latch, found it, and with a great effort managed to pull the door open.
"Ouch. Fingers hurt." she said, cutting down what could have been a long rant.
((What time of day is it?))

((Midday))

Fitz was looked around the tunnel. "They shouldn't store there food in here." He was under the impression that the squirming things were food. He often ate such things when small mammals were scarce. Brother rolled his eyes. He was a dog. It doesn't matter.

Caligula nodded. "Yes. The Cafe reeks of them. It makes me sick. How could any human want to house those creature?" She forgot once again that she was working with a Gifted.

"That's not their food.." she whispered down to him. "That's called gross. If you- oh, you do. Well, just wait till you taste Outskirts Cafe food. It's not the best, but it's.. well, it is the best."
Cafe... reeks... Creatures (dirty)...
"Come on up! We need to get in!" she whispered down to Fitz. It was a bright day, and outside they were rather conspicuous.

magus clenched his teeth.'Remember the promotion.'He kept thinking to keep from getting angry.'As soon as I get that stupid promotion You can forget about fieldwork.'He thought. He didn't enjoy bringing his own kind in.But it kept them from getting suspicious.

Fitz quit munching on the bug. "Really? What does it taste like? Don't tell me. I don't know the right words, I think."

Caligdula stalked closer to the cafe with Magus in tow.

"It's a lot of things," Emily said hurriedly, and led Fitz quickly to the back door. The people with the disdain in their thoughts were edging closer. Emily rang the silent bell and a woman appeared in the door. It opened. There were no words spoken, just the background noise and hum of the busy cafe. Emily sniffed deeply.
"That, Fitz, is what real food smells like."
The cafe had a small library room where people could read as they ate. It also had walls which blocked any wireless or biological signal. It seemed to any sort of scanner to give out the same readings as an empty room. And this is where they were taken. There weren't many people in there except an old man in the corner wearing a strange hat, a group of primary-school children and a man with a rather pronounced Grin with a captial G. He held out his arms to her.
"Emily! It's you! We thought you'd gone forever!"
"It's been ages, John. It really has. How's Marcie?"
"She's... fine." There was a hint of worry in his voice. She flicked through his mind. Oh. Marcie had recently had a baby.
"That's wonderful! What's her name?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Don't you remember? I'm Emily Jones. You know..."
"Oh. Right." He dropped his voice several decibels. "You really ought to think before you blurt out that sort of thing. One sided conversations are a little weird."
"You're right though. Frankie is a nice name. Oh damn!"
Emily grinned feebly at Fitz.
"You haven't seen this whole compicated business before because you don't tend to keep secrets from me. John here is a chronic truth editor. I am a chronic mind reader. We work things out eventually."
Just then Marcie walked into the room, saw Emily and ran towards her.
"Emily! I've missed you so much. And who's this? He looks like he's been raised by wolves!" Emily coughed and fiddled with her collar.
Erm... he has. she projected to her.
Marcie's face adjusted to an apologetic grin.
"So, what is your name, young fellow?" she said, in the patronising tone of a school teacher who believes children must be on leashes and wear pillows at all times. She deserved exactly the scathing put down which Emily was not horrible enough to say.

Fitz scowled at Marcie. "I was not raised by wolves. I was raised by dogs. I believe though they look the same to humans, it is an entirely different experience. The b***h who raised me called me Fitz." The boy didn't mean b***h in the vulgar way, he meant it in its true way. He was raised by a she-canine and he was taught that she-canines were called bitches. The males were studs, but that didn't even matter. He glanced around the room nervously. He was starting to miss Brother.

Caligdula kicked open the door to the cafe. She ignored everyone inside and simple followed her nose. "There are more. Tons more. It is a regular nest as they call it in Manhattan."

"Act normal or they'll all run."He whispered to Callie. His scanners number went down to zero the second they went in.He sighed."This is going to be harder than I thought. He said looking at the dozens of people in there."How do you want to do this?"He asked Callie as he casually walked to the counter."Can I get a small coffee? No cream please."He said.He had been here quite a few times before he joined the government.'Please just don't act like you know me.'He begged knowing that they could hear him. This could prove to be bad for him Callie just might find out what she wanted to know about him if he wasn't careful.

Caligdula's ruby-red eyes flicked around the cafe. Her nose was not effected by electronic scanners. She could smell them. Unfortunately, the smell was everywhere. She was unable to pinpoint their exact location. She mumbled something about wanting a coffee with a cream as well. She had aways seen this cafe when she prowled, but she never came in. She hadn't been here on business before either. She swept her red bangs out of her eyes as she sipped the coffee. "This is good."

Emily knew that Marcie was only meaning well, bu secretly she cheered for Fitz. She liked Marcie and she was great and everything, but secretly she really annoyed her. Suddenly there was this feeling that all was not well. She looked out of the door slightly. She was right. It wasn't. She caught a woman striding across the cafe. She virtually slammed the door and pressed her back against it. She gulped.
"Fitz! They're here! Damn! Holy sh- Marcie. Go and act as if everything's normal. John. We need somewhere we can't be tracked, heard... or smelt."
John shook his head.
"This isn't a proper refuge. We rely on the fact it's in the outskirts and it isn't crummy. That tends to flick away any suspicion. You cast haze and I'll snoop around. Just act normal."
He pulled out a bottle of room fragrance and sprayed it around.
"You said smelt. I guess I can fix that."
He walked off, carrying a stack of plates precariously in one hand and the spray in the other.
"Mmmm. Tacky air freshener." Emily coughed. "Great. Now we're a little stuck. Do you think we're likely to be found? The walls jam scanners, there's loads of people here, and they haven't seen us. But I don't really think a bottle of spray is going to help us very much."
All in all, it wasn't the best situation a person could be in.
Thank god for coffee.
"Do you want to try a cup of coffee? It's a hot drink. You might have had it."
She stepped boldly and with no movements that would reveal her difference out of the library room. She muttered to one of the waiters that she would like two coffees not too hot with cream and sugar. He nodded his head and flicked his colourful hat. It was the equivalent of an honurable bow for the Outskirts Gifted.

((Um...though I say she smells, it isn't the same as offactory senses. It is a bit different. It has just been called smelling because her nose acts as the receptor.))

Caligdula sniffed the air again...then she chocked. 'Ack. Stupid perfume. Smells worse than Nero's cologne.' She sniffed again. 'Make that 'Superior Roma's' cologne. I know it was them.' She drank her coffee swiftly. She spurted then too. She drank the hot black liquid too fast. She tapped Magus on the shoulder. "Be back Avon. Need to find a water fountain. I refuse to pay for such a common commodity."

Fitz frowned. "Who is here. Is those government people you talked about?" He coughed at the spray. "Why did you do that?" he choked. He was glad as a human he didn't have delicate senses, but the smell was still maddening to his unrefined nose.

"Well, I overheard one of them thinking and it was about smelling and detecting. I think they can smell us. That's why I got him to do that. But it's only a guess." Emily coughed as the cheap perfume stuff clogged he sense of smell. The coffees arrived and she handed one to Fitz.
"Wait for it to cool down a bit. You'll probably hate it, but it gives you energy."

Avon smiled. The cafe's coffee did have a...unique flavor. It took some getting used to but it still tasted good. He sighed once She was out of sight.'Man I can't believe I took her here of all places...oh well it waws bound to be found someday.'He thought to himself. He had the butterflies. He didn't want to get the owners into trouble after all they helped him a bit when he was younger.

Emily sipped her coffee and smiled at the flavour. She had tried guessing how they made it so well but without success. She had suggested cinnamon... woodsmoke... even the possibility of cheese, but that was just stupidity. She connected to Marcie who was walking over to serve a customer.

"You don't seem too happy. What can I do for you?" Marcie produced a chocolate covered biscuit from her impossibly precarious tray. She recognised the general fetures of the man. Could he be Garrick? No... to tall. He wasn't Dean either because he was dead. It had to be Magus, although it was ages since she'd seen him. Emily heard this.
Don't say anything about it! she pojected. Marcie acted totally normal, now used to Emily's annoying habit of using her head to scout around with. Emily shook her head when she returned to normal, clearing her blurred vision.

"Sorry about that, Fitz. Just had to check something out. Try the coffee!"

Fitz sniffed the coffee. He made a very sour face. "I've smelled this before. When that black cat with a white stripe peed on me." His vocabulary was, once again, limited to what dogs knew. He obviously meant that a skunk sprayed him. It wasn't a very pleasant experience for him.

Caligdula stooped over the water fountain near the bathroom. She tried to wash the smell of perfume out of her mouth. The Gifted were starting to aggravate her. They were there. They reeked but she couldn't pin point. If she had the means, she would blow up the cafe right then and there and solve all the trouble. Of course, she would be stuck in the internal debate weather to warn Magus or not.
