As I lay in my bed, trying to fall into a trance and get to Destiny, a knock sounded from the door. Who would be here at this ungodly hour? At first I thought it was Terry. Then I thought the word "ungodly" once again and realize it had to be the one and only Mave. I huffed, aggrivated, as I got out of bed, walking out of my room and to the front door, yanking it open. "Yes?" I said, trying my hardest not to be rude. Trying my hardest. Ri-ight.

"If only words could kill..." Mave snorted, rolled her eyes, and then pushed off the wall. "I need to talk to you... May I come in?" Her stomach twisted into knots, telling herself that if she didn't get this out to him, she would be sick. She put her fingers to her full lips and uttered, "Please, I really really need to talk to you... about that thing."

I was instantly awake. "Yeah, yeah, come in," I said hurriedly, suddenly eager to have her in my apartment. Maybe I was scared. Scared something was watching us, could smell her vampiric blood. "You want coffee?" I offered. "Tea? Anything?" I walked the five paces to the small kitchen and watched her over the counter, her delicate form sitting on the ratty sofa.

"No, no, I'd only need one drink now, and I'd rather not show you my savage side." She chuckled once before the sick feeling came into her stomach again. "Now, can we get to the questioning? I really don't know where to start..." She watched him grab a small bag of Tootsie rolls off of the counter before he sat down beside her, looking as if he wasn't distant toward her anymore.

I got the coffee maker situated as I sucked on a Tootsie Roll and listened to the coffee brew, thinking of where to start. I walked around the counter, over to Mave. "Here," I said, putting my arm in her face. "I know how it's done. Believe me, I've done it before. Then we can get on. I need you to be strong for what we're up against... whatever it is."

"I... I can't," she said, her voice cracking. She pushed his arm away and took a deep breath. "Can you just like... ask me questions before we get off ino a tangent?" She leaned her head, feeling heavier by the moment, back into the soft couch cushion.

I pressed my arm practically to her lips. "Look, just do it. You're practically fainting on my couch. How are you supposed to answer my questions if you're not fully conscious." Now I did press my wrist to her lips. "Drink," I told her.

"No!" Mave answered forcefully, throwing away his arm. She could smell his blood pulsing within him, sweet, rich... but she couldn't come to tell him that she had never actually taken blood from someone living-- again, she preferred blood banks, and stealing from hospitals; less messy, and without having to deal with an Imprint. "Just ask me. I'm fine. I just need to get this out."

I huffed, frustrated with the stubborn vampire. I was offering blood to her; wasn't that, like, polite in vampirism? Whatever, I poured my coffee and mixed in my Hershey's chocolate and caramel creamer. I sipped it, walked out of the kitchen, and sat next to Mave. "Okay, so what's going on?" I said. "Start from the beginning. Tell me everything you know."

She took a deep breath and began, "You see... well, how to put this? It looks bad for me, I know... but... one of my good friends had been getting mysterious phone calls, letting onto her being stalked. They always knew where she was, what she was doing, how she was dressed..." She paused for a look of disgust. "They started giving her a countdown... to her death. They told her that, since she wouldn't give them what they wanted-- sex, no doubt," she added, seeing his expression, "they would murder her in punishment. Well... obviously, I didn't like that. So, about three weeks ago, I began to trace the calls. Of course, it took a long time, a lot of work, but I found the calls to be made from... guess where? The house of the people who were slaughtered. I was out for blood... Uhm, no pun intended. "I wasn't meaning to hurt them, really... not much, because no one could seriously be that involved in wanting to murder someone, especially if their phone lines were that easy to trace. And what had to have happened but my father being on a work trip-- and I couldn't leave Phoenix alone in the house. I mean, really, who would? My best friend lives across the street, and I'd rather meet the freak in his own home, with my sister, in order to protect her, than get there to an empty house and realize that the pervert could be at my own home, doing whatever he pleased to Phoenix. I couldn't let that happen." She caught his look again. "Oh, she's fine now, Father came home before I dropped her off. "Anyway, when we arrived, no one answered the door, especially to a punky girl with a bad attitude and her game face on, so... I kicked down the door. Obviously." Mave laughed as if it were some nonchalant thing to do, then her expression flatlined once more. "When we approached the hall, I heard a bloodcurdling scream behind us. That's when... we saw..." She clenched her mouth shut with her hand, but not before asking quickly, "Where's your bathroom?"

"Right there," I said, pointing to a door by my bedroom. I heard retching sounds, then the toilet flushing. Running water for several seconds, then she came back out. "So, you went to this house to hurt these people - this family, mind you, mohter, father, two children - and found them already being slaughtered? How does this tie into that... what was it, 'spider lady'?"

Mave nodded gravely. "To make a long story short, this tall, lean shadow creature being thing, with multiple limbs, literally ripped apart and dismantled those people-- which explains the blood splatters. Of course, I wanted Phoenix to get to cover, that's why we went down to the basement... only... that thing followed us. In the basement... the little girl was also hiding. It's my fault she died, and I'm really, really sorry." She frowned. "That thing forced us so watch as it... she... held her down and... sucked her dry. Like a spider."

I sat in silence, trying and failing to process this information. I just couldn't gather it all at once. "Can you give me a couple... a while?" I stammered. She nodded and I set my coffee down on the coffee table, walking back to my bedroom and shutting the door. I lay down on my bed and closed my eyes. It was time Destiny and I had our chat.
"Hello, Lukas," Destiny said from across the chamber. "First off, what did you do to Deon?" I demanded, sounding stronger than I felt. I was bluffing. Also known as lying. I try not to lie. But hey, circumstances change. "I had to see if he was worthy," she said, her black lips curving upwards at the corners. "Worthy of what?" "Of being your guardian." This made me spit on the ground. "******** that! I don't need a guardian! I know you've said I'm one of your 'best Watchers' or some bullshit, but I don't need extra-special protection! So you can take your little guard dog off of his leash and let him go, because I don't need him." Destiny's smile widened. "If that is your choosing, then I will release him." She held out her hand next to herself, palm up. A piece of aged paper floated there for a moment, caught fire, and burned to ash, which fell into her palm. She blew the small pieces of debris from her hand and they floated away. "There," she said. "Now, what else seems to be the matter." "I want to know what exactly this thing is that killed that family." Destiny laughed and shook her head. "Lukas Morone, I suggest you leave here now, because it is about to strike again." I panicked. Right away, I just panicked. I woke up in bed with a start and barged out of my room. "We have to go," I told Mave, sliding my shoes on and grabbing my keys. I had a feeling that even though i didn't know where I was going, something would guide me.
((Sorry, Deon, but I didn't like the whole "guardian" schpeel xd ))

"What? Why?" she asked, following him out the door. She got in alongside him in the car as they took off. "Seriously! I want to know why."

"Because there's going to be another attack," I said, putting the car in gear and speeding out of the parking lot. "I doubt you know where it is, but we're going to find it."
