~:Coming Out of the Closet :~

(Skype RP between Laz, Hazeline and Xiu )

Xiu was worried. The date he had agreed upon with Lazarus was finally here. It was hard trying to convince his guardian to have a weekend breakfast at a café when Hazeline’s default breakfast of choice was buttered toast, sweet tea, scrambled eggs and a good book.

“What’s the occasion, Xiu?” asked Hazeline curiously as they neared the café.

“Well, since it is the housekeeper’s day off, I thought it would be nice to have breakfast outside,” said Xiu as he tried to make light of the subject. “Lazarus helped me with the reservations,”

“Oh?” said Hazeline with surprise but the guardian nevertheless entered the café with her charge.

It was a modest hipster cafe. With bare brick walls decorated with modern artwork and menus written with chalk on blackboard. The tables were made from reclaimed wood for the unique look, and while the steel chairs were not cushioned, they look comfortable enough.

It was a weekend, so the cafe was pretty full. However Lazarus managed to secure a table in a quiet corner of the cafe. He had to come earlier to line up for a seat, because restaurants don't take breakfast reservations, that idea is just silly.

Dressed modestly in a buttoned up white shirt, with sleeves rolled up, the Raevan waited patiently with his eyes at the cafe's front door. Only a quarter was left in his cup of latte when Xiu arrived. Smiling, Lazarus waved for them to come over.

“This place is pretty packed,” observed Hazeline as the duo entered the café. “Is the food good?”

“It has good ratings online,” said Xiu with a smile. “Naturally… I am a poor judge of food,”

Which was true since the Sigel hated anything heavily seasoned or overly complex in taste. “But I hear that the coffee is quite exceptional,”

It was then that Lazarus’s waving caught the Sigel’s eye. Turning to his guardian, Xiu motioned that Hazeline should join the Valsaros. “I requested that Lazarus join us, I hope you do not mind,”

“Odd that you failed to mention that before,” said Hazeline as she gave the Sigel a sceptical look. “I know you have a better memory than that,”

Nevertheless the guardian took her seat opposite Lazarus while Xiu sat between the both of them at the tiny square table. “So Lazarus, I see that you have grown and I have heard about Dr. Kyou’s recovery as well. Congratulations on your growth and it is good to hear that the Doctor is on the road to recovery,” said Hazeline, getting straight to the point although it was clear that Xiu had kept the darker bits of the story from his guardian. Then once the formalities were over, Hazeline leaned back and observed the Fiery Raevan critically. “If all raevans grow up looking as good as you do Lazarus, the Lab should start collaborating with modelling agencies,” said Hazeline by way of making a light conversation.

Which, in Xiu’s opinion, fell rather flat. Nervously the Sigel glanced at his boyfriend.

Lazarus got up and pulled a seat for Hazeline and waited her to be seated before taking his seat once more. He waved for the waitress to bring the menu as he did so.

"Oh thank you." The Raevan replied with a slight blush as she congratulated him. Although the complement that followed felt a little flat, perhaps it was spoken in too formal a tone. "Thanks." He smiled a little awkwardly in return.

"I hope you're a coffee person." Lazarus tries to break the awkwardness with some casual chit chat. "The coffee here is excellent. And they are famous for their dutch baby pancakes as well!" He said as their menus arrive.

“Dutch baby pancakes? What are those?” asked Hazeline as she took the offered menu.

“There are pictures next to the menu items,” offered Xiu helpfully as his guardian scrutinized the food offered.

“Those look huge, Xiu. I don’t think I can manage one on my own,” said Hazeline with a small frown. “Very decadent,”

“It’s meant for sharing I believe. I would be worried if you could finish one on your own,” said Xiu with a soft laugh as he stared fondly at his guardian. Despite the initial awkwardness, the white Sigel was glad to be able to spend time with the two most important presences in his life.

Hazeline smiled and her features softened. “Don’t you doubt me,” warned the guardian in a playful tone. “Or I might just outdo you and Lazarus,”

Turning to Lazarus, Hazeline offered the Raevan a smile. “I like tea and coffee in equal amounts. I see that you have had some coffee already. Would you recommend I try that?”

"Oh the pancakes are not too decadent at all. They are light and fluffy, and you can have them savory as well as sweet." Lazarus chipped in with the conversation as he pointed at the item on the menu. "I believe they put bacon bits into the batter when they're making the pancake." The pancake will be served with berries and whipped cream on top still, which makes it interesting.

"Ah yeah the latte is great here. Or if you prefer something a little stronger, the cappucinno is good too."

"Another latte for me please." Lazarus smiled politely at the waitress as she drops by to place their order. Then glancing again through the menu, Lazarus orders an english breakfast as his main dish. He knew that Xiu couldn't eat much, but perhaps he could poke at the scrambled eggs or grilled mushrooms.

“Oh, that does sound interesting. I look forward to trying it,” said Hazeline as she folded up the menu and handed it back to the waitress. “Make that two lattes,” said Hazeline with a nod after Lazarus had made his order. “What will you have, Xiu?”

“I would like the breakfast tea. No food for me,” said Xiu happily. The atmosphere within the shop was good and the Sigel was already beginning to feed on the innocence of the patrons close by. “This is a change from my usual breakfast spot,”

“The park right? Don’t you ever get bored though?” asked Hazeline curiously.

“Hmm? No, not really. Like how some people can eat rice, pasta or bread for every meal, you could say that it is my staple food. Although Lazarus has mentioned that flames from different sources tastes different,” said Xiu looking at his friend apologetically. “Sorry, I did not know that flames from artificial scented candles tasted that bad,”

Lazarus laughed softly at the comment. "Yeah, natural fire still tastes the best." Red eyes glances at Xiu fondly, remembering the night they had that conversation.

"But nowadays I don't really feed on flames anymore. I eat human food now since it is more fulfilling than feeding on fire. The effectiveness of feeding on fire seemed to had... diminished." He went on to explain the changes of his growth.

However, small talk aside. There is a much more serious topic to touch on today. Glancing at Xiu briefly, who looked a little nervous, he smiled and took the Sigel's hand in his, gripping it tightly. Initially, Lazarus was surprised that Hazeline did not know of their relationship yet. Kyou had known for ages, there was not even the need to explain it to him. They two Raevans had been dating for a couple of years, so it was a little shocking when Xiu confessed that Hazeline still thinks they are just best friends. Today however, that will change. And Xiu had to muster up a great amount of courage to come out to Hazeline. Whatever happens, Lazarus just wants Xiu to know that he will be there for him, as he squeezes the other's hand lightly.

When Lazarus visibly placed his hand over Xiu’s own, the white Sigel took that as a cue to proceed on to more serious matters. Heart thudding loudly, Xiu stared silently at his surprised guardian for a moment or so; as though hoping to summon the courage needed for this endeavour.

“Hazeline, the reason we- Lazarus and I …,” faltered Xiu as he sought the words needed to explain their relationship. Blue eyes stared worriedly at his guardian as Hazeline’s full and astonished attention was focused on the white Raevan.

No...he could not do it. Could not bring himself to...

A reassuring squeeze of the hand brought the white raevan back into focus. He had to do it. It was now or never!

“We are in a relationship!” blurted Xiu quickly as though hoping that having it all out at once would make the situation better.

Hazeline stared. And stared some more. She could not believe her ears. Did Xiu just…admitted to being in a relationship with Lazarus? The guardian’s mind reeled slightly at the thought. How did this happen? Why was she not told earlier?

“How long have the two of you been seeing each other?” asked the guardian faintly.

“Five years since September 7th!” came the prompt reply from a worried Xiu.

“Five years…that was about the time you grew into a Sigel wasn’t it?”

Xiu nodded anxiously.

Hazeline closed her eyes. Five years…that would mean that this relationship was pretty serious as far as relationships go. Had she never notic-

No, now that she came to think about it, there were all of those subtle signs…

The frequent meetings, the gifts, the hanging outs…

And here she had thought that they were close friends.

Hazeline just did not realize that her raevan would be enamoured with another male…

Or perhaps the two raevans did not realize the implications of their affection.

Looking at Lazarus now, the guardian’s voice was guarded. “And you are…serious about this? Really serious?”

Lazarus felt his heart thudding hard like Xiu's as well as the Sigel finally confessed to his guardian, and answered her questions. He was quiet as Xiu spoke, although he was surprised that Xiu remembered the exact date they had gotten together, as red eyes widen slightly at the white Sigel.
He felt something caught in his throat as Hazeline directed a question right at him. He was thankful that the background noise of the chit chat in the cafe drowned out his audible gulp. "Yes, I'm serious." Lazarus answered, he pursed his lips slightly, and his brows were furrowed as he gave her a determined reply.

Hazeline sat back and observed the two Raevans before her. This felt slightly surreal and the guardian wondered briefly if this was indeed a dream.

But no dream of hers had ever been like this.

What should she do? How should she handle such a delicate situation…

Does Xiu know about…the birds and the bees? Granted there was nothing to worry about now but what about…later?

Would this be a proper time to bring it up? Well…if they were serious…

“I might be wrong or maybe…this has never been brought up because well…Xiu at least, still lacks the necessary organs for it but…I mean…when the two of you were freis and sigels…I guess gender does not really matter since…,” said Hazeline, clearly flustered. The young woman wondered if other parents had to go through with this as well or did their kids picked it up as they went along?

“What I mean to say is…just how intimate will this relationship go?”

“Hazeline, I love Lazarus,” said Xiu quietly while a faint trace of a blush came over his features. “Please, is that not enough?”

At her raevan’s plea, Hazeline found herself closing her eyes once again as her thoughts raced within her. Should she? Shouldn’t she?

“Alright,” said Hazeline as she finally made up her mind. “Why don’t we see where this goes from here on out then? You are both matured individuals and I trust that the both of you know how to behave yourselves. Don’t you? ” asked Hazeline, once again looking directly at Lazarus.

After all, it is not a guarantee that this relationship would last. Most puppy love do not. Unless of course, this is not puppy love.

But if it is genuine love, then why not?

Why not indeed…

Lazarus blushed as well. Xiu may not know what Hazeline was talking about when it comes to 'intimacy', but the Valsaros know full well what she meant. "I can promise you that... I won't do anything that Xiu wouldn't want me to do." It was somewhat open ended, but he hoped that she would be happy with that.

He is however, very relieved from Hazeline's responses. Lazarus had came to the meeting expecting the worst. He had after all, attacked Hazeline before. Although when it happened he wasn't in his right mind. He wasn't sure what she think of him still. It was really one of the reasons that Xiu had withheld from telling her about their relationship all this time. Afraid that she would reject them. Plus same sex relationships are still somewhat frowned upon in this society.

Their drinks arrived just then, as the cheery waitress interjected their somewhat private discussion. The three of them waited quietly for her to set their drinks down before she rushed off again to attend to other guests.

The arrival of the drinks could not have come at a better time. Instantly the trio could feel the tension dissipating as the cheery waitress placed their respective drinks on the table. Taking a sip, Hazeline nodded to the two raevans. “I will be keeping an eye on the both of you though,”
Like Lazarus, Xiu felt an intense relief when his guardian gave her consent. It was all good then. The guilt, the fear of being caught red handed…

It was over. Now that his guardian knew and consented to, Xiu felt as though his relationship with Lazarus was…legitimate. Smiling happily the white sigel gave Lazarus’s hand a tight squeeze. “Thank you Hazeline,” said Xiu fervently. “Thank you so much,”

~:Being Proactive:~

It seemed odd that what appeared so obvious now had never occurred to the Sigel before. In fact, Xiu was surprised that up until this moment, he had never even given it much thought. Right up to the point where the seller had asked “You do know what a Pi Yao is, don’t you?”

For a moment the Sigel was stunned. Of course he knew what a Pi Yao was! Hazeline had certainly not kept the origin of his soul from him. Indignant, Xiu was about to tell that merchant so when the merchant continued “It brings lots of luck if you have one in your home. Even better if you buy a pair,”

“Really?” said Xiu, glancing at the squat stone figurine on display with some curiosity. “And how is that different from all the other items in your store?”

“Well…for one thing it brings lots of wealth, on account that it eats gold and can’t poo,”

“It sounds uncomfortable,” said Xiu hazarding an opinion to the enthusiastic seller.

“No, no! That’s a good thing,” the man said with a vigorous nod of his head. “It means that wealth does not come out. Stays in. You see, it’s because it does not have an a**s,”

“Ah…,” said Xiu with morbid fascination. “I am certain…there is much more to a Pi Yao than that…,”

“Yeah, it protects its owner. A good guardian,”

That was more like it. “Tell me more,” said the Raevan encouragingly.

“Maybe I will recall several other facts, if you buy it,” grinned the merchant.

--------------------------------------------

And that was what led the Sigel to do some soul searching on the internet. After all, it simply would not do to let his “wealth come out” as the merchant had so eloquently put it.

Blue eyes scanned the various webpages opened before him. It was as the merchant had claimed. The Pi Yao was a legendary creature noted for its ability to bring luck and wealth to its owner. Several other websites had then went on to explain about the Pi Yao’s protective properties but to what Xiu had come to colloquially refer to as “The Wonderful World of Feng Shui”, that seemed to take on a second fiddle when compared to luck and wealth.

Which begs the question, what is “luck” exactly?

The probability of an event occurring in one’s favour came the almost instantaneous reply in Xiu’s mind.

What is…probability then?

Numbers indicating how likely an event is the occur

Despite himself, Xiu could feel his heart skip a beat. This train of thought…he was onto something!

Barely able to keep his hands steady, the Pi Yao reached for his wallet and extracted a coin.

Two sides.

50/50 chance.

“Heads,” whispered Xiu hoarsely.

And flipped the coin.

--------------------------------------------

“Heads,” murmured Xiu, his voice now barely above a whisper.

How many times has it been?

Three hundred and twenty two times said the part of him that had been counting.

Unbelievable.

He had to test it further.

Slipping out of his seat and stretching, Xiu took a look around the room. What else could he do?

It was then that the Sigel noticed the deck of playing cards lying on the coffee table. Hazeline had got them from her recent flight to a conference but no one in the family played cards. So there they were, still mint in their packet.

Xiu took the cards out and stared at them thoughtfully. How many cards were in a deck then?

Fifty two, minus the Joker. Alright then. This was definitely more interesting than a coin flip experiment. The Sigel began shuffling the cards. He had seen how the professionals on television shuffled cards but Xiu was not going to delude himself into thinking that he could pull that off. Not on his first try at least. Placing the cards face down, Xiu did a quick mental calculation. If one were to disregard the suits, the chances of getting any one number would be 4/52 which would translate to 1/13 or a probability of 0.077.

“Give me a two,” said Xiu as he flipped the first card.

It was a two of spades.

So far so good. Now onto the next card. But now the number of cards in the deck had decreased by one.

“A nine,” said Xiu. So that would mean, a 4/51 chance or a probability of 0.078.

Xiu drew a nine of clubs.

It was time for a different approach.

“I want a King of Hearts,”

A 1/50 chance or a probability of 0.02.

Xiu stared at the King of Hearts thoughtfully before placing him down. A chance of getting any card from the diamond suit. A 13/49 chance or a probability of 0.27.

It was a Jack of Diamonds.

Xiu collapsed back into the sofa feeling suddenly tired now that his initial adrenaline rush was ebbing. But far from being worn out, the Sigel had on a speculative look. Just how far…could he go?

Placing all of the cards back into the deck and giving them a good shuffle, Xiu then extracted two cards, face down.

“Three of clubs followed by a five of spades,”

That would translate to 1/52 x 1/51 = 0.019 x 0.020 = 0.00038. A probability of 0.00038.

Xiu then flipped the two cards over and smiled. Perhaps it was time to try this out in a more realistic situation…

~Short Birthday Snippet Here~

“Happy birthday Xiu!”

“Many happy returns!”

“Happy birthday!”

“Thank you,” replied Xiu with apparent delight. Glancing around the dining table, the Sigel smiled cheerfully. What more could one ask for? Being merry with one’s family on one’s birthday has got to be one of the best feelings in the world. To reciprocate this joyous event, even his rune was pulsing brighter than usual.

“Quick! Make a wish before the candle runs out!” exclaimed Joshua impatiently. “It’s already beginning to drip onto the cake,”

“Oh, right, right!” said Xiu as he leaned over to blow out the candle in the shape of a number seven. “May the coming days be filled with joy and laughter for all,”

“It is hard to believe that you are already seven this year,” said Hazeline with some amazement. “Time sure has flown by,”

"Yes, it has and I am thankful to have spent those seven years with you guys,” said Xiu with a smile.

“Then here’s to another seven-or more happy years!” cheered Joshua as he raised his glass.

With his rune pulsing brightly, the Sigel raised his glass as well to join in the cheer.

KINDA NFSW WARNING

Xiu sat back as the credits to Inception rolled. “Oh wow, that movie had me gripping the edge of the sofa from start to end,” said the Sigel with a chuckle. “Who would have thought that dreams could be so deep?”

Turning to Lazarus who was sitting on the other end of the sofa, Xiu asked “So…do you think that Dominick came out of the dream? I really hope he does. Mostly because the thought of being stuck in limbo …sounds terrifying,”

“It does make you think isn’t it?” Lazarus smiled, his index finger tapping his chin thoughtfully. “I do hope that he is not stuck in limbo. But at the same time, he is happy. So even if he is stuck, at least it is a happy dream? It is kind of bittersweet.” He added as he slid across the sofa towards Xiu. “Don’t you think so?”

Xiu was silent for a moment. While Lazarus had a point, the Sigel was still unsure if he approved of such an escapist route. “But that would mean leaving the people he really cared about behind in reality,” said Xiu. “That doesn’t seem right. He is happy but his happiness might all be a lie,”

Blushing slightly under Lazarus’s intense gaze, Xiu pressed on. “I mean, I want him to be happy but a happiness stemming from an idyllic dream feels…yeah, it is bittersweet I guess,” said Xiu, dropping his hands with a sheepish grin. “I guess I am ambivalent about the ending,”

Now that the movie had ended and the television switched off, full attention could be paid to the raevan beside him. Placing a hand gently over Lazarus’s, Xiu smiled. “Should we watch another movie? Or head out to the tea house across the park?”

“Hmm…” Lazarus considered for a moment as his hand flipped to hold Xiu’s hand instead. Red eyes turned to look at the super bright summer sunlight shining through the window outside. It had been a blazing summer this year, especially the past week. “Nah, I don’t feel like going out.” As comfortable as he is with heat, well, more so than other people anyway, there are times when it is too hot even for him outside. The air conditioned room they are in feels just nice.

Lazarus looked thoughtful for a moment, his eyes seemingly gazing into the distance before he spoke. “It was tragic, what happened with Cobb’s wife in the movie.” His eyes lowered to look at their hand held together. “You can tell that he couldn’t let her go, because she kept haunting his dreams.” Then he lifted his eyes to look at Xiu. “Would you miss me if I was gone?”

. “Yeah, I would,” came the Sigel’s quiet reply as he met Lazarus’s gaze without flinching. “I would miss you very much Lazarus. And it scared me when you were in that coma last year. I have heard…,”

Here the Sigel paused as though struggling with a troubling thought. “I have reasons to believe that not all Raevans make it even if…we are not openly told so but, you know, I really like where we have come so far and I hope we could go on even further. Together,” said Xiu, stumbling awkwardly over his last sentence.

It was frustrating really. In books and movies, conversations like these flowed like water and the rhetorical “Would you miss me if I was gone?” cliché happened often enough.

And yet he had blundered on splendidly. Where was the witty retort? Where was the debonair smile? If anything, the question had caught him off guard and the Sigel had been momentarily horrified that maybe…just maybe, Lazarus was hiding some deep dark secret from him and this was as gentle a way of breaking the bad news. Which was silly…right?

“You aren’t asking me this because something is about to happen, right?” the white raevan asked nervously. Just to be sure.

For a moment, Lazarus just stared wide eyed at Xiu. The white Sigel does have the tendency to overthink and worry too much. The corner of his lips curled up as he smiled at Xiu’s fumble. It was cute and sweet. “No silly.” He chuckled softly as he spoke. “Nothing dire is happening to me or anything. It was just a ‘what if’ question.” He squeezed Xiu’s hand gently, reassuringly.

Still, Xiu’s words were really sweet. “Of course I would miss you. A part of me would be missing too if you were gone, I will never be whole again…” The Valsaros gazes lovingly into the Sigel’s eyes before lifting his hand to his lips and kissing it gently.

Xiu was touched by Lazarus’s words and visibly blushed when Lazarus kissed his hand. Heart fluttering within him, the Sigel then paid Lazarus in kind with a tender kiss to the cheek. “Thank you, Lazarus. That means a lot to me,”

Then as if emboldened by the act, Xiu leaned forward once more but this time it was Lazarus’s lips that received the kiss.

Chuckling softly as he pulled back, Xiu spread his arms in preparation for a hug from the Fiery raevan.

A look of mild surprised dawned on Lazarus’s face when Xiu pecked him on the lips. However, Lazarus will grant more than just a hug. Chuckling softly, the Valsaros leaped forwards on the couch and tackled Xiu down. They landed with Xiu’s head against the couch’s soft armrest.

His laugh quieted as he leans down, shutting his eyes he planted his lips on Xiu’s gently. And not just a peck as well as he kissed Xiu tenderly.

A tackling hug was not quite what the Sigel expected and Xiu felt his head hitting the padded armrest of the couch. But none of it mattered as the Sigel was laughing along with Lazarus. It felt good, being able to scuffle about like that. It was an aspect of growing up he did not do often. Because of the decorum and self-restraint expected of him.

But things soon quietened down and Xiu found himself lying contentedly beneath the fiery raevan; the smoky scent of the other a familiar and comforting one. Wrapping his arms around Lazarus’s strong shoulders and pulling him in for a tight embrace, the Sigel welcomed the tender kisses and returned them with some of his own. Blue eyes gaze dreamily up to the one who had stolen his heart. “I love you, Lazarus,” said Xiu softly. “I truly do,”

Lazarus smiled at the words that he is familiar with, but it always makes his heart soar whenever he heard it. “I love you too.” He replied as he leans down to kiss Xiu again.

When he got up from the kiss however, he noticed how Xiu’s wing was bent in an awkward angle against the couch’s back, and the other hanging off the couch. He didn’t know if it makes Xiu uncomfortable or not, but it sure is uncomfortable to look at. There was something else that was bothering him as well, as he turned around to look at the hallway. Even though it is quite unlikely, he worries that Kyou, even on his crutches, or Jeremy, would walk in on them. That would be quite awkward indeed.

“Do you uh… want to go somewhere more private, and comfortable?” He paused and blushed. “Like my room?” A door in the way would make him feel at ease much better.

Noticing Lazarus’s glance down the hallway, Xiu pushed himself off the sofa to see what was causing the distraction and was hit with the same realization Lazarus had. Anyone could or might have walked in on them and that would have caused much embarrassment to both parties.

So when Lazarus suggested that they moved to somewhere with a little more privacy, the white Sigel was quick to agree. Besides, he had been in Lazarus’s room several times prior to this and was therefore familiar with its surroundings.

“Sure,” chuckled the Sigel as he allowed Lazarus to haul him off the sofa. “I think I may have left my book there during my last visit. Have you seen it? It’s a mystery novel. The Mahogany Room ,”

With his hand holding Xiu’s, he led the Sigel into his room. “Hmm. It should still be where you left it.” Lazarus was not one to tidy his room normally. Maybe once or twice a year of spring cleaning, maybe putting some things away sometimes, but not on a regular basis. Especially with something that doesn’t belong to him, he just leaves them be. So when the owner comes back, they would still be able to find it where they left it. However, his room is still fairly neat.

Gently he closed the door behind him as he lets Xiu wander in. Then going over to his bed, he flopped on it playfully, bouncing a few times as he laughed. “Come on!” Lazarus motioned for Xiu to do the same.

Laughing at Lazarus’s enthusiastic bouncing on the bed, the Sigel did not need to be invited twice to join in. Folding his wings close to his back to avoid hitting Lazarus by accident, Xiu leaped onto the available empty space beside the fiery one and bounced several times. “Gosh, your bed is really springy,” chuckled the Sigel before grabbing a nearby pillow and hitting Lazarus with it. “Gotcha!”

“H-hey!” Lazarus complained and laughed as he was hit by the pillow. Then turning around, he reached for another pillow. “This is war!” His smile was mischievous as he hit Xiu with it.

They tussled for a while, hitting each other with the pillow and laughing merrily as they did so. Until Lazarus suddenly lost balance, and with a loud gasp he toppled over Xiu, falling on top of him. The pillow fell out of his grasp and dropped to the ground next to the bed. “Ow… I’m… sorry?” He laughed as he got up. Suddenly realizing he’s face to face with Xiu underneath him.

If there was one thing that could be learned from today’s pillow escapade, it is that Lazarus could get very enthusiastic about waging a pillow war. Laughing with Lazarus at all the childish fun they were having, Xiu was surprised when Lazarus got to his knees with a huge feather pillow uplifted and ready to strike.

“Hey! Be careful!” warned the Sigel, worried that the impact would shower them with an explosion of feathers. But he needn’t have worried as Lazarus suddenly lost his balance on the springy mattress and toppled…onto him.

“H-hey?” chuckled Xiu good naturedly as they stared face to face. Leaning up, the white Sigel gave the fiery one a playful peck on the cheek.

At first, he was just blushing that they ended up in a compromising position like this. It is too much like a moment in a love drama, kind of cheesy to be honest. However, when Xiu pecked him on the cheek, he realized why situations like this always move the way they do.

Smiling, he stared lovingly into Xiu’s bright blue eyes for a moment before leaning in to kiss Xiu on the lips. The moment felt right, it felt like the right thing to do as he presses his lips to Xiu’s.

The kiss was warm and the embrace that followed was tender. Xiu purred. He could not help himself. Lazarus’s weight and scent above him was reassuring and the fiery one’s gaze as he pulled back from the kiss was captivating. Blushing softly, Xiu raised his hand to caress Lazarus’s cheek gently before tracing the tattoo across Lazarus’s left eye. He had asked about it once and apparently the Valsaros had been born with it. There was another tattoo such as this, Xiu knew. And it traced itself over Lazarus’s hip and southwards towards Lazarus’s recently acquired legs. A brief instance of curiosity crossed Xiu’s mind as he wondered where the tattoo ended. Did it snake its way down the entire length of Lazarus’s legs? Or did it end shortly below…

Xiu felt himself blushing at the thought, his knowledge of the human anatomy hazy as it were. Nevertheless the thought itself was tantalizing in its own right. But the words were stuck in Xiu’s throat. He could not…would not dare to ask Lazarus what lay hidden beneath the fabric of Lazarus’s trousers. That was…inappropriate and most definitely frowned upon. And so the Sigel contented himself with another kiss from Lazarus’s warm lips, his own rune glowing quietly beneath them.

His eyes soften and his smile widen when Xiu caresses his face, knowing exactly what Xiu was touching, as he always does. The white Sigel’s eyes were in the distant for a moment though, quickly followed by a blush.

“What are you thinking?” He chuckled softly as he leans in for another kiss on the other’s lips, brief but sweet. Then he started tracing light kisses along Xiu’s jaw, gently undoing the button on Xiu’s collar as he does so.

This time, Xiu’s blush was even more apparent than before. Like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar, Xiu stared at Lazarus’s amused expression. It was unfair really. Lazarus would know if he was telling a fib; mostly because he had a terrible poker face. And as embarrassing as it was to tell the truth, it was probably better than having the Valsaros calling him out on the white lie and teasing him about it later on.

Not wanting to meet the other’s gaze, Xiu mumbled. “About your other tattoo…,”

By this time, Lazarus had succeeded in unbuttoning his collar and the Sigel was momentarily hopeful that the fiery one would not have heard his reply. Then again…he should not be encouraging such a behaviour from Lazarus, delightful as it was. Xiu’s rune glowed uncertainly. Should he stop the other? Should he let it go on? Both of their guardians knew about their relationship and it was not like he disliked the current sensation that was coursing through him. On the contrary, it was very stimulating. Xiu felt himself purr louder as Lazarus began trailing kisses down his exposed neck and collarbone. He could feel Lazarus’s fingers already working on the next button on his vest and honestly, it…excited him. Perhaps…the next button and then he would halt the other.

Lazarus had heard what Xiu mumbled. Perhaps… perhaps today would be the day he would be able to see the whole thing. Even Lazarus was unsure himself how this would go. He was just driven by instincts, by his feelings, he just wanted this to last a little longer.

Pressing his lips on Xiu’s collarbone, he suckled on it gently, making a hickey. It delighted him so that he is the only one able to taint the white Sigel’s perfect skin the way he did. It was exhilarating. Undoing one more button, and then another, he reaches underneath and touched Xiu’s chest sensually, opening his vest as he did so.

Snaking one of his hand back up Xiu’s shoulder and neck, he hold Xiu’s face tenderly as he leans in to capture Xiu’s lips in a kiss once more, with a little bit more passion and intensity now.

Before he realized it, Lazarus had had all the buttons undone and Xiu could feel Lazarus’s warm hand caressing his skin. Xiu’s spine tingled and his heart raced at the electrifying sensations that were coursing through him. Forget about the two buttons rule. He…would like to see this through. Once that was done, Xiu felt elated. There would be no restrictions, no constant monitoring. He trusted Lazarus and knew that the Valsaros would not hurt him.

Panting softly from the sensation of Lazarus’s touch, Xiu accepted Lazarus’s kiss with equal enthusiasm; parting his lips so that Lazarus’s tongue may enter if it chose to. Slender arms are wrapped around Lazarus’s strong shoulders as the two raevans hugged.

Sensing that Xiu’s lips is parted, Lazarus deepen the kiss enthusiastically. At this point he wasn’t thinking anymore, letting his instincts and desire run the show. It had been way too long since they had gotten intimate, and Lazarus is hungry for it. The gap between them closed as they kissed over and over again, each time their lips touch some of his breath is taken away. Each touch was electrifying, sending thrills along his body.

He didn’t even realized that one of his body parts was reacting, too enthralled by Xiu’s kiss and touch. Until he felt an uncomfortable feeling, then he paused, pulling his face away from Xiu’s with a frown, trying to identify what was wrong. His mind cleared and he realized the uncomfortable feeling was the pressure in his pants.

Red eyes widen with surprise and realization, as it finally dawned on him what was going on.

“Oh s**t!” Lazarus pulled himself away from Xiu immediately, pulling the blanket to cover his crotch. He didn’t want Xiu to see it! It was only fate that Xiu did not have a lower body, and probably did not felt it pressing against him. Lazarus was pretty sure he was just pressing against his own sheets… right?

Even if Xiu had felt anything peculiar, the white Sigel thought nothing of it;- too enthralled was he to be in Lazarus’s embrace. But at Lazarus’s exclamation the reality of the situation came crashing down;- more so when he realized the state he was in and the fact that Lazarus had conveniently draped the only blanket on the bed about his persons. Fearing the worst, the white Sigel glanced wildly towards the door while his hands fumbled about the suddenly-complicated buttons of his vest.

But the door was closed.

And there was no one there.

The feeling of relief that washed over him was insurmountable. Nevertheless, Xiu turned to Lazarus with an accusatory look. “What was that about, Lazarus? You had me really scared!”

When the reply seemed unforthcoming, Xiu became worried. “Is something wrong? You seem to be really red in the face. Are you hurt?”

Lazarus’s mind was total blank as he stared at Xiu, even though his thoughts were concentrated on the tightness in his pants. What should he do? He can’t let Xiu know what is happening! What should be say? Questions and thoughts raced through his head. It felt like a long time had passed, but it was only a full minute. When his eyes focused on Xiu and his concerned questions once again, he can’t help but noticed from a further distance, how tantalizing the Sigel looked. With his clothes in disarray, his cheeks and lips a tint of red, and the hickey he left on his collarbone…

It’s starting to get even more uncomfortable in his pants.

“Uh I uh….” Come on Lazarus think, come up with some excuse to get Xiu away quickly. “I just remembered that I have something urgent to do for Kyou!” He wasn’t sure if this will pass Xiu’s lie detecting skills, but it was all he could come up with on the fly. “Perhaps you should go home for now. I’m… I’m really sorry about this.” This last part he meant though, with all his heart.

Xiu watched as Lazarus practically bolted out of the room, blanket and all. The Sigel was stunned by his boyfriend’s behaviour to say the least. And he was pretty sure that Dr. Kyou had no errands for Lazarus to run. That was the reason they had agreed to an afternoon movie earlier.

Besides the telltale flicker of untruth from Lazarus of course.

Xiu was thoughtful as he took his time to straighten up his clothes and hair. He had seen comedies with people behaving like this. It usually involved a sudden desperate urge to head to the bathroom to do a “Number 2”. Perhaps Lazarus ate something that did not agree with him. He did yell out “Oh s**t” earlier.

That was gross. And a justifiable reason for the white lie.

Xiu nodded and sympathized with Lazarus. He’d visit his friend again when Lazarus was better able to control his bowels.

~:Sword Fighting 101 – Part 1:~

The white sigel found himself floating down Gambino Street towards a familiar building. It had been a while snice he had last visited Vermillion Bakery. It was not that the delicacies on offer there were not good (they were super!) but times had been hard. Not monetarily but psychologically. Dr. Kyou had been in a coma and Lazarus had been run ragged in an attempt to bring his guardian back.

Long story short, the Fiery Raevan was successful although he had paid a heavy price indeed. From what Xiu understood, it was really thanks to Cesc that Lazarus could even be found at all.

Cesc…

Xiu longed to meet the friendly raevan once more. The frei had always seemed to emanate an air of calmness and “everything will be alright” vibe.

But more importantly, Xiu needed to thank him
---
Cesc looked up toward the door as it opened, stationed at his usual place behind the counter at Vermillion. Immediately upon seeing Xiu, the stag's eyes brightened and he smiled. Xiu! It had been too long!

Suddenly, Cesc remembered that it really had been quite long since he'd seen his friend. So long, in fact, that he couldn't recall if Xiu had seen him since his growth--he was bigger now in every aspect than before, looking more a man than a boy. How had he allowed himself to neglect Xiu for so long?

Right--because Xiu would have been busy at the Lab... with Lazarus.

Pushing these thoughts aside, Cesc held up a hand and floated around the counter. "Xiu! So good to see you!"
---

Xiu brightened at the sound of the familiar greeting but there was puzzlement upon his features as well. While familiar, Cesc’s voice sounded different from what he remembered. Looking in the direction of the greeting, Xiu was astonished to see what he saw, for what approached him was no Frei but a Sigel instead.

“Cesc? “exclaimed Xiu with obvious surprise. Apparently the people at the Lab had forgotten to mention this small but rather vital fact about the stag when retelling Lazarus’s rescue. Or perhaps Cesc had grown after the event. He would have to find out.

“You have grown?”

Floating over, Xiu inspected his young friend. “When did this happen? I heard no news about it! But congratulations!”
----

"Last summer, believe it or not!" Cesc laughed, looking down at himself. He tugged at the bottom of his shirt and patted his stomach, smiling a small, self-conscious smile. Xiu's congratulations warmed him and shamed him; pleased for seeing his friend but embarrassed to have let the occasion go by without having marked it with him. "I'm sorry we haven't gotten a chance to talk since then. But then, I imagine..."

He paused, wetting his lips. "I... imagine you've been with Lazarus and the good doctor?"

------
“Last summer? Really?”

Now it was Xiu’s turn to be embarrassed. Had he honestly neglected keeping in touch with the stag for a year? Even if he had been buried under books with Lazarus, that was a poor excuse indeed.

“No, I am the one who should apologize…,” said Xiu with a sheepish look about him.

When Cesc mentioned the Doctor, Xiu nodded. “Yes, I was with Lazarus and Dr. Kyou although much good that did,”

“Lazarus saved his guardian on his own accord but it was really thanks to you that he is even alive right now. So, thank you very much,” said Xiu earnestly although inwardly the Sigel cringed at how quickly the conversation had escalated.

---

" Oh, ah-- no..." Cesc paused there, clearing his throat. Xiu's broaching the topic suddenly reminded Cesc of that unpleasant evening, of how he'd found poor Lazarus. It seemed so long ago, tucked deep in the folds of his brain where he could not easily access it, like the jungle, like Iorek's rage, like Zurine's despair. He covered these memories with good ones-- Kyou's consciousness, Zurine's growth.

"Here, come in--" Cesc said, waving Xiu in. "Can I get you something to try, to drink? We can talk about--that night, if you want, but don't... you don't have to say that. Dr. Kyou and Laz have done so much for everyone else. And you know, I have that, er, finding thing. I was happy to help and give him some blood."

Cesc tried to lighten the mood, smiling again. "I'm glad they're both doing better now. It was a long wait for it, huh?"

---

Xiu nodded in agreement. “I am glad that it is over now,” said Xiu softly, not wanting to thread on ice. It was during that trying period that he had actually harboured thoughts that maybe…maybe it was better to just let the good Doctor pass on. But thankfully it did not have to come to that. Still…to have even pondered it…

When Cesc offered him a drink, the Sigel smiled. “Yes, a drink would be good. What would you suggest?” the Sigel asked, trusting the stag to choose a suitable beverage. Noting several customers about Xiu turned to his friend. “I hope I am not disrupting business?”

----
"We have some fresh-pressed apple cider that we just got in," said Cesc, smiling lightly as he went back into the store, waving Xiu into a nearby two-top table. He looked over at the customers, but the line was moving fairly quickly and Vivi seemed to be taking good care of it. She caught his eye and nodded toward the chair, lifting a hand to waggle her fingers at Xiu in quick hello.

"I think it's fine-- I'm due a break anyway," said Cesc. "I also have some good white teas in, if you'd rather those."

------

Vivi, Cesc’s guardian was as vivacious as always and Xiu returned Vivi’s wave with a friendly one of his own. Everything about the bakery felt warm, friendly and welcoming. Taking a seat, Xiu considered the options offered. “Tea sounds good, actually,” said the Sigel with a smile. “But really, whichever is easier,”

-----
"Just a moment," said Cesc, holding up a finger. He moved behind the counter, smiling briefly at guests, and put together a tea-- scooping the loose-leaf into a reusable sieve, steeping the tea, setting the mug onto a tray with a server of cubed sugar, a small container of honey, and a lemon. At the last moment, he poured another mug a cinnamon-colored liquid from a carafe and then floated with the tray to Xiu's table.

"White tea with pear for you," said Cesc, setting out the mug and saucer for Xiu from the tray, along with the other accoutrements. "I couldn't resist for myself--got some of the cider."

The Sigel slid into the seat opposite Xiu, warming his hands around the mug. Thus settled, he felt more comfortable, at ease to speak.

"So… I take it the doctor and Lazarus are doing well?

-------

“Thank you, it smells wonderful,” replied Xiu as he took in the fragrant aroma of the pear infused with the white tea. With such delicate brew before him, it would be a shame to mar it with sweeteners and the like, natural or not. Cupping the mug and delighting in the warmth it gave, Xiu nodded.

“Yes, they are both doing well. The Doctor has regular sessions with his physiotherapist; to improve the strength of his legs. At present, he is still in crutches though but you would be surprised at how quickly he gets around,” said Xiu with a smile. “Lazarus is fine too but busy helping the Doctor manage the Lab,”

“Lazarus looks different,” added Xiu after a slight pause. “Granted he has legs now but umm…without his wings, he looks smaller. He says he prefers it that way but…,”

Xiu fell silent. He was heading into a rather depressing topic of conversation and he did not want that. “So, I see you may have some news to share yourself?”

---

"I'm happy to hear they're doing well," said Cesc simply. "I don't--know what Lazarus was doing down there, where we found him." He frowned. He didn't want to cause Xiu any grief, but enough time had passed that the stag thought perhaps the news would be accepted without any pain caused from it. After all, Xiu had just said that Lazarus was fine...

"Do you know? Where we found him, or what he was doing there?" he ventured, his voice slow. "It was in a mausoleum, in the graveyard. He was--wingless, when I arrived. But they weren't, ah... with him, either. It was just him, as he is now. I have no idea what he was doing down there, or why he decided to go."

Well, there had been blood, but surely Xiu was aware that the process was not... seamless. Or seemly.

Cesc shook his head. "As for me--we had some... ah, tribulations, as a family." He shrugged, and he smiled a wry smile. "I learned a lot from it. We'll put it at that, ah?"

------
Xiu listened attentively while Cesc recounted the night’s event and the condition in which Lazarus was found. While he had known the gist of the story from Jeremy, it was good to hear it from a second source. Cesc’s description of the scene was a little more graphic than Jeremy’s had been but it helped pieced together what he knew and what he suspected. Perhaps Cesc deserved to know what had happened too…

“Lazarus made a trade,” said Xiu as he glanced down at him mug. “He found a book on demon summoning. We fought about that and yeah… he went ahead and did it anyway. I guess Lazarus bartered his wings for Dr. Kyou’s life,”

At the mention of Cesc’s “tribulations”, the white Sigel nodded. It was clear that the Stag was unwilling to talk about that so perhaps it was for the best to leave it at that. It was shocking to realize that distressing situations seemed to be the catalyst to a raevan’s growth. If that were the case, Xiu was satisfied with his current position in life, thank you very much.

“Speaking of Lazarus, I have recently been told that he is having boxing practices with Zul,” said Xiu, by way of changing the topic. “Probably as an exercise routine since we know that the both of them could just blow up enemies if they had a mind to,”

---------

Cesc paled a little as Xiu explained the reality of Lazarus' situation. He wanted to delve further--didn't Lazarus understand what he was getting himself into?!--but clearly the topic had been explored enough between Xiu and Lazarus that any further comment was unnecessary. Cesc understood the power of love, understood it even better after his own growth trials, but to literally make a deal with a devil...?

Maybe it was for the best. Lazarus himself was a demon, wasn't he? And now they had Dr. Kyou back. The ability to make new Raevans, the insight into their condition: that was all back now, by Lazarus' doing. Who was Cesc to judge? And after the jungle, he knew just how deeply everyone had wanted Dr. Kyou safe.

The stag's color returned as Xiu changed the subject. He nodded, even laughed a short laugh at Xiu's comment. "Yeah, I can't see a lot of reason for that other than general fitness. I actually train a little myself, with Iorek--strength training and combat." He patted his own bicep for show. Indeed, since his growth, the stag was much broader, much stronger, than previous days.

"But, you know, I sometimes think about that stuff," Cesc continued. "I... wasn't a lot of help in the jungle. My powers, they're not particularly offense-based. I can't blow anything up or whatever the case may be with other Sigels." He shrugged. "All I can say now is that I can throw a decent punch, but..."

Well, that wouldn't be a LOT of good versus demons, at least.

--------

Xiu smiled when Cesc patted his bicep as proof of his strength training. The stag did indeed look much more robust than he did as a Frei and Xiu was glad for his friend. “I am afraid I have never done any such trainings myself. Despite…what has happened in the past,”

Xiu shook his head. “Perhaps it is because I keep telling myself what are the chances of such an event occurring again,”

“Now that I have said it, it sounds painfully optimistic and that I am in denial,” said Xiu with a wry chuckle. “But you seem to have something in mind?”

-----
"What is it about us?" Cesc wondered aloud. His thoughts fluttered, alighting on Zurine. She hadn't been asked to perform any feats of strength, but trouble had certainly found her, too... and it had taken every ounce of her to move through and past it. "Why are we constantly finding danger?"

He sighed, shaking his head. "I don't, really. To be honest, I thought you might have something up your sleeve. I don't really know much about your powers, but I know you have that sword that's, ah, bound to you." The stag cracked a grin. "Thought maybe you knew how to use it."
------

" What is it about us? Why are we constantly finding danger?"

That was probably a rhetorical question and one Xiu sometimes found himself asking; usually when he is unable to sleep at night. Cesc’s next question though, was easier to answer.

“Only as far as books and youtube videos can help,” said Xiu sheepishly. “Honestly…in this time and age, I am not even sure if it is legal to own and use a sword,”

“Not that…umm…it remains unused,” mumbled Xiu quickly.

-----------

"Maybe for, uh, mischief, you're right," mused Cesc. He took a drink of his cider, then put the mug back down on the table, drumming his fingers on the ceramic. "But there's people who take lessons and things like that, right? Fencing? That's a sport. You have to have a sword to participate. That and kendo, and others."

He paused, an idea forming in his head. "I guess that is an option, if you ever wanted to learn it properly. I know a girl at Gambino University, I can ask her if there's fencing classes there?"
----------------

The idea of taking sword fighting lessons was intriguing and Xiu found himself nodding to Cesc’s suggestion. “That is certainly an idea. Yes, I would like that very much,”

“Would you be joining though? It might be fun to have a friend to spar with,”

----------
Cesc paused at that with some surprise, his eyebrows lifting. He hadn't particularly thought of sword fighting. He hadn't particularly thought of anything other than just learning how to brawl and putting on some muscle. But it wouldn't be a bad thing to learn something with a deeper fighting advantage. Something in him whispered as much--that it was possible, as much as he loathed the idea, that he could need it.

I should just buy a gun… part of his weary mind groaned.

"Why not?" Cesc smiled. "I don't know if I'll be too good at it, but I'd never mind trying. I can see what evenings I might have off and schedule them around when a class might be. I can ask the girl I know whenever and get back to you."
--------------

Xiu nodded. “Sounds like a plan,”

Now that the talk about sword fighting classes seemed over, the Sigel smiled. “I plan to pay the lab a visit after this, what cakes would you recommend I get for Lazarus and Dr. Kyou?”

---------

It seemed settled. With a smile, Cesc rose, leading his friend over to the display case. "I seem to remember he likes mango, but with that out of season…"

~:Licking Wounds:~

(A response to Fighting Friends from Atma's journal )

The Sigel winced. The pain from the blow that Cesc had delivered (and the Professor had approved) had now receded into a dull but deep throbbing in his jaw. Had Cesc struck out with the pommel any harder, Xiu was certain that he would have been spitting out teeth by now.

This was why he hated fighting. There was always pain accompanying it. Certainly, books, propaganda and movies had made everything seemed so grand and glamorous but the truth of it was that it was probably a cover-up to get stupid young men to enlist for a war their rulers thought fit to incite.

A soft growl emanated from Xiu’s lips. That was starting to sound like self-pity right there. Just because he had lost terribly to the stag and was sent home by the professor to lick his wounds and come back better prepared for the next lesson, he was beginning to whine.

Well, that certainly should not be tolerated. Think back whispered his mind as rationality fought to get a say through the pain and soreness of his body. There was that time when he had to fight to save his guardian’s brother. Then there was that other time when he had to get several teenagers drunk on booze to back away from the rabbit frei LuLu. And let’s not forget the incident in the forest, the one that had nearly killed Dr. Kyou and drove Lazarus to seek the aid of a demon to help his comatose guardian. He had had to fight in all of those situations and he had probably gotten away with it with minimal damage out of sheer luck.

And as someone who had recently realized that “luck” was something manipulatable, the Sigel knew that odds could be greatly improved if skill was a factor for an outcome. That was why he had needed to improve his sword skills. He could not go around relying on just luck and a well-made sword alone. There needs to be effort involved. No one said it was going to be easy. In fact, it was probably going to be otherwise. But he had to endure. If he could not at least have a decent understanding of using his sword, then what was the point of carrying it? No wonder he had been embarrassed and reluctant to elaborate when people commented on his ownership of one. Deep down, he knew that he was not worthy of it. It was almost akin to making a humble fisherman the captain of a massive state-of-the-art shipping vessel or something.

Well, no one said that the humble fisherman couldn’t take classes and learn.

The Sigel’s rune glowed brightly for a moment. He was going to attend Wednesday’s lesson, bruises and bumps be damned.

~:My Duty to Them:~

Sometimes, the world can be an astonishing place. He had all but given up hope but fate saw it fit to send him not one but two students of promising talents. The pink youth, Cesc, had been able to conjure up an astonishing array of weapons with just a thought. All he needed was the feel and look of a real weapon to get him started. It was almost…magical.

The vampire frowned and took another sip of his claret. While of a supernatural persuasion himself, the vampire was not a fan of magic. Magic in battle was almost as bad as these modern guns and pistols. There was no finesse in them. It is close to impossible to acknowledge an opponent from a distance. It felt mass produced.

But he should not jump to conclusions just yet. The pink youth had shown willing and an eagerness to learn. There was potential in him. He need never fear losing his weapon in battle and the enemy will be hard pressed to wrench his weapon from him. He would certainly have to plan Cesc’s training around such an advantage.

“More wine, sir?”

“No, I think not, Igan,” said the vampire as he placed the wineglass onto the tray.

“Something on your mind, sir?”

“As a matter of fact, yes,” said the vampire with a smile. "Two new students have enrolled in my sword fighting classes. They show promise,”

“Very good, sir,”

“One is capable of materializing swords out of thin air,”

“Astonishing,”

“While the other…the other…,”

“Sir?”

The vampire had fallen silent. The more he tried not thinking about it, the more his mind insisted otherwise.

“Tell me Igan, how much do you about swords?”

“Not as much as you, sir,”

“Quite so. Now tell me, how much do you know about soul bound swords?”

“I-I am can’t say, sir,”

“They don’t happen very often,” said the vampire curtly. “And one would hardly expect to encounter any in these modern times. I was positively in awe when I saw the sword drawn out of its scabbard. It is a magnificent example of its kind. It is unfortunate that its wielder isn’t quite up to par yet,”

“Ah…,”

“That is why, Igan, it is my responsibility to see to it that these two boys be the best that they can be. For their sake as well as mine,”

“Yes, sir,”

“Now pass me the claret. My throat yearns for a drink,”

~: Let the Lesson Begin! :~

Prof Estoc: Now as we know, there are several points about bladed weapons that do follow an empirical rule. Heavier weapons strike harder but lighter ones provide better control and speed. And it isn't all about weight as well, boys. It is where the weight is distributed. *holds up a mace and an axe* As you can probably see, these weapons are top heavy and have been used to crumple armour like so many tiny tin cans. Now this...*holds up a French rapier The centre of balance has shifted much closer to the hilt so the user gets a better control of his weapon and it isn't used for bashing opponents senseless. It is for precision stabbing. And now we have something in between. holds out a scimitar model The centre of balance for a blade such as this, is slightly further away from the hilt. demonstrates this by balancing the sword horizontally on his finger* See? It balances better as my finger shifts down the blade. And there is a reason to that. The top of the blade has added heft for higher damage when brought down onto your opponent. The scimitar is a slashing weapon. You do not stab with it. This is how blade designs such as this works. So... some of the circular motions you do see in combatants are done with the intention of building momentum for the cut. But unlike a mace or hammer, you will recover from your strike a lot faster. Thus improving your chances of defending a treat.

Prof. Estoc: Now Cesc, this is where it gets exciting. Or rather, this is where it gets me excited. I have seen what you can do and have pondered over it for some time. Naturally when this came to me, I was...blown over by its possibility. Have you ever considered...manipulating the central balance of your sword as you battle? Shifting the blade from striking power to control as you do battle in real time? That is something which no one is able to do and...that would give you a huge advantage at times.

Prof. Estoc: *laughs drily* That is of course, if you can keep up with the ever changing shift in balance. Just a thought. Keep it in mind when you are practicing. And stop trying to bring your arms as high as possible before trying to slash it down as hard as possibly. Such a "power cut" as that would render you open to so many attacks...You'd need a longer time to change blade direction and recover your balance. Really, all an opponent would have to do to kill you would be to side step that blow and move in afterwards to finish you off.

Prof. Estoc: And as for you, Xiu. I am not even going to pretend that I know the names of the thousand and one fighting styles you see in martial art movies. Nor am I going to tell you about inner peace and the hundred different stances to take. You seem like a bright, logical lad so we will talk logic as well. As I have mentioned, a blade’s design will give an indication of how it should be wielded. Now take note, Xiu. Unlike the scimitars Cesc is using, your sword is a straight sword and is lighter than his. So barring your own physical strength, your cutting power is somewhat reduced. But that should not be a hindrance. Your straight blade is sharpened on both sides and ends in a sharp point. This gives you the versatility to cut using either sides of the blade as well as to thrust deep into your opponent. Needless to say that would also imply that better handling of the weapon is needed. I noticed that your wristwork could do some work, by the way. And finally, practice is still essential. Regardless if your mind is able to envision it or not, if your body can’t react to split second timings, you are still…very dead. I want you boys to train and train and train until…such decisions as these no longer become conscious effort-required thoughts. I want it to be such that they become tacit. Something you know it is the right thing to do but not necessarily able to explain how or why. Hows or whys are not questions one asks in battle. Leave it to the philosophers. Fast reflexes; that is crucial. So… give me 20 hours of practice before we next meet on Monday.

~:Nighttime Training:~

“So this is where you are, Xiu,” said Hazeline as she stood atop the roof the building which served as both house and home to the Lees.

“Oh, Hazeline. I did not expect to see you here,” said Xiu looking up sheepishly from his sword practice. “I thought you should be asleep by now. And it is cold up here,”

“I could say the same to you,” said the guardian with a smile. “What’s with this new level of diligence?”

“We were told to put in at least twenty hours before the next meeting,” said Xiu as he sheathed his sword and floated over to his guardian. “This seemed like the perfect time and place to do it,”

“On the roof of the shop in the middle of the night?”

“It is the least obstructive in terms of timing and location,” said Xiu with a shrug. “My training should not impede the everyday running of the shop but at the same time, I refuse to bested by Cesc,”

“Isn’t he the young frei who helped you get your voice back?”

“Yes, and he has now grown into a strong Sigel,”

There was a moment of silence from both parties before Hazeline spoke “But…?”

“There is…no ‘but’. I am happy for him,”

“And I am a monkey’s uncle. Did something happen?”

“We had a mock battle on the first day. He unanimously won,”

“Ah, okay… … wait, with swords?”

“Yes, he magicked up a scimitar out of light and beat me squarely with it,” said Xiu with some reluctance. “It caught me by surprise. Apparently he had been training a lot while I was with Lazarus in the Lab,”

“But you are good with a sword!”

“Unfortunately not, Hazeline. I was not born with the innate ability to wield a sword,” said Xiu with a chuckle as he faced his guardian. “Did you think I was?”

"Well ah…,” stumbled Hazeline. “You seem to know what to do with it…,”

Xiu laughed. “Most people would; when placed in a situation. But unfortunately I need training and practice to wield a sword efficiently. Plus, a bit of added exercise certainly won’t hurt,”

Hazeline smiled. “No, it won’t. I was always rather worried that you weren’t getting enough fresh air,”

Xiu’s rune glowed slightly as the Sigel wore an amused expression. “I am touched by your concern,”

“Oh, don’t you start,” chuckled Hazeline as she turned to leave her raevan to his training. “There will be hot water in the thermos when you are done. Make yourself something warm and don’t fall sick,”

“Got it, Hazeline. Have a good night,”

    “You too, Xiu,”

~:Care and maintenance:~

Xiu stared at the paraphernalia before him. Perhaps it could be better described as a rag cloth, a clean cloth, some rubbing alcohol, flour and a bottle of linseed oil. The last was something that the Sigel had to purchase from the local hardware store but all in all, this was as economical as it was going to get.

Gently unsheathing his sword and placing it onto the surface of his desk (duly lined with newspaper of course), the Sigel took a moment to run through the process once again. Of all the videos he had found on the internet, this looked the most straightforward and required the least amount of fancy gadgetry. It helped that the video was also made for the care and maintenance of Chinese swords.

Up until that point in time, Xiu had always just given his sword an occasional rub down with a damp cloth. Then again, the sword was not often used and seemed likely to spend its days as a fixture on the wall. That is, until Cesc had come along and the subject of sword fighting lessons had been discussed. Now the sword was practiced with regularly on the roof of the bookstore in the middle of the night. Not that the night held many terrors for the Sigel. Not on this, his street at least.

But there was that one time…

Having been brought up in the city, Xiu was aware that unlike the wilderness described by many an adventure book, the night was never truly dark. Certainly there were shadows but these were the shadows of various hues cast by the overlapping lights of the streetlamps against opaque structures such as post boxes and parked cars. These were familiar shadows. Shadows that denote safety and stability. Shadows that made one feel glad that civilization has come a long way from the terrified cavemen and his weak fire in the unforgiving night.

But sometimes, when the nights were eerily silent and the air was so still that it made one feel breathless, there was darkness within the darkness. From his vantage point on the roof, the Sigel had first noticed this occurrence when he had stopped to take a break from his training. Back then, Xiu recalled the stifling sensation he felt when he had first noticed this…anomaly.

Tap tap tappity tap

It was amazing how the brain could deliver sounds when the ear struggles to capture it. It should not have been possible, at least not from this distance but Xiu heard it in his mind nevertheless. The soft tap-tapping sounds of questing fingers against glass, the silent slinking as it moved from one house to the next.

Xiu found himself unable to look away. The creature was slow but it was also meticulous in its search. The size and intensity of its darkness left no doubt in the Sigel’s mind of its harmful intent.

It was too close for comfort.

Xiu felt his grip tightened over the hilt of his sword and in that same instant, the creature halted and it seemed to the Sigel that it was now looking in his general direction. Then, to the Sigel’s relief, the shadow dissipated, leaving nothing behind.

Backing away from the edge of the roof, the Sigel allowed himself a small nod. No, not today. Not ever. He would not let them near his home. That was his territory. His ward.

For several days afterwards, Xiu kept his eye open during his nightly trainings but that strange creature never showed itself again.

“So the first thing you do…,”

Xiu blinked. He had been lost in his thoughts and hadn’t realized that the video had already started. Picking up the rag cloth, Sigel proceeded to follow the instructions of the video.
