Lore frowned at that, it was such a strong emotion, it was something he would have done back when he was young. What could have happened.

Lin's eyes lit up, she really did like that book, just because it showed such interesting things. She wondered what other things about the First Age she hadn't seen yet.

"Yes!" she exclaimed with a while smile, "That would be so neat, and Storm and Starr like magic."

"Uh oh!" Starr exclaimed, her white eyes growing wide. "We're not allowed magic while we're here! Mama says we'll have to go home right away!"

"No," Storm shook his head. "That's only if we do magic. That doesn't mean we can't see other people do magic! 'Sides, Mama says the elfs are magic people, and they use magic all the time!"

Earendil laughed at Storm and Starr. "I'm sure it'll be all right," he grinned. "Sir Valdemar's the only one who will be doing magic in there. Though I could show you some later, if you'd like."

He knew Lin liked his magic, and though he was far past the age where he always wanted to show off just for the sake of showing off, he wanted to let these kids get as much enjoyment out of this trip as they could.

Atalya looked solemn as they rounded the corner that led to the main door of the castle, and even the sunlight that streamed in from the enormous windows in the ceiling could not serve to chase the shadows away from her face.

"He has, at last count, at least three children," she replied. Her face darkened. "And all from different women. He shamed not only himself and those women, but the rest of the family."

As if she hadn't already had enough problems.

Lore nearly gapped, but remembered to keep his mouth or rather his jaw closed. Three children? He supposed if they were back in Gaia, and if this person was anyone else but the Queen's grandson, yes he could see it. Gaians, especially some races were sexually active, but this was...

The last time he checked those connected with a royal family couldn't afford that kind of luxury.

"Oh...."

"I still need to learn, maybe I could learn when I get a bit older," Lin looked forward to that, even though she would rather learn the type of magic more similar to what those at the school learn, "But it'll be okay Starr, Storm is right, as long as you don't use magic it's okay."

At least Storm was acutally not bending the truth this time, she had overheard the last time they got caught.

Elnara grew slightly pale, and she tightened her grip on Lore's hand without realizing it. She rather agreed with Lore's sentiment - a simple, soft 'oh' that encompassed everything that she was feeling.

Or nearly.

It had been for a reason similar to that that she had left Sasku, that things had gone so wrong between them. He had been like Riordan - or perhaps she could say that Riordan had now turned out like Sasku. And yet, while Elnara honestly agreed that yes, Riordan had dishonoured himself and the family ... she couldn't, at the same time, refuse to acknowledge him as her family now refused. If she did, how then could she ever speak to ... well, to be fair, a good number of Gaians that she knew?

Still, it was the last thing she would have expected from one to whom honour was everything.

Starr brightened. "Okay, then," she agreed. "Let's go see the book!"

"I should probably warn you," Atalya added in a quiet voice as she led them out of the castle and into the courtyard, "it's best not to mention his name. It would only cause anger and arguments all around."

And they went outside.

The courtyard was not much different than it had been the last time Elnara had been there. The same flowers bloomed in the same vibrant colours, the path was still lined with the same beautiful bushes, and far inside, nearly to the opposite wall, the brook still burbled through, clean and cool and clear.

Sir Valdemar smiled and nodded. "Yes," he agreed softly. "Let's go." He led them from his study and down the hall towards the library. As they went, he wondered which section he should show them this time.

Lore nodded slowly, he could understand that, it was a major taboo, if nothing else the fact he did go that far probalby upsetted a lot of poeple. How odd, he thought to come back here after only a year or so, only to find out how much eveyrone had changed.

Lin watched as things passed watching the guards to see if they were any if she might recongized. She didn't know after all if they changed the guards around every once in a while, or if there were any new guards. She supposed if they starred at her more than usual they were new.

"Do you think your Daddy missed me?" Lin looked up at Earendil, though the twinkle in her eye would tell a person she was not that serious about it.

Elnara smiled and turned her face towards the desert sun as they reached the outdoors. She had missed it, more than she realized - but she was no longer used to it, and she felt herself beginning to sweat, despite her loose, light clothing.

"You know," she murmured, "I don't think I ever saw the courtyard completed ... when I lived here, it hadn't been built yet, and I didn't see it at all when I was here last ..."

Serenity's eyes grew wide and she gazed about the courtyard with awe.

"It's so pretty," she breathed as a colorful butterfly, the likes of which she had never seen before, fluttered past her. She followed it with her eyes to where it lit on a bush, and noticed with surprise that the bush - which she had at first thought was covered with bright flowers - was actually covered with many different colours of butterflies.

"Papa, look!" she exclaimed excitedly, tugging on his hand and pointing. "They're so pretty!"

Idhril clapped her hands and tried to scoot down off of Lore's shoulder. "I want to see!" she squealed.

Even Silvrendir was excited about the pretty butterflies, but he made no sound - only dashed forwards and off the path, darting under the bushes and off into the undergrowth.

"Be careful," Elnara called after him as he disappeared.

Atalya smiled faintly and gave the others some room to look around.

"Luthien should be in here somewhere," she murmured. "It's safe for the children to explore, if they wish. There's nothing to hurt themselves on, nowhere to get lost."

They entered the library, and Sir Valdemar left the others at the door while he went through the shelves to get the book that Lin wanted. It didn't take long - it was closer to the front, and one of the thickest: and he eased it off the shelf carefully and brought it to the desk at the front of the room.

"Well," he smiled, setting it down gently and running his fingers lovingly over the cover, "what would you like to see? There's the creation, both of the land and of the elves; there's our old home, which you already saw, Lin; or there's the later history. Crossing the seas, life with the Valar ... later on the wars and destruction, but I think we'll not look at that."

He looked down at Lin. "Well?" He would let her choose.

Lore smiled as he set the little girl down, "Don't rush, they might fly off," he warned.

He wondered if there was something on the bush that the butterflies liked, though it's quite possible.

"It's very beautiful here."

Lin looked thoughtful for a moment, she tilted her head for a moment and thought.

"The creation," she finally decided.

Though she was far too young to really understand what it all meant, she knew being from a young race that this was something interesting. Seconds were not an old race and she wanted to tell Trisha later.

"It is," Elnara agreed softly, basking in the warmth of the sun. As Idhril ran off, following Silvrendir, she started slowly down the path, reaching for Lore's hand. "It's very deceptive," she couldn't help but comment.

It was so peaceful ... and yet simmering below the beauty was a turmoil that she had the feeling she had only seen the cap of.

Serenity reached into her bag, which she had still slung over her shoulder, and pulled out a thick folder that was almost bursting with loose papers. She licked her thumb and forefinger, and flipped through it until she found a clean sheet, then moved it to the outside of the folder. She used it as a tabletop and plucked a pencil out of her bag, then started to sketch.

Storm was intrigued. "Creation?" he asked. "Of what?"

He wasn't as interested in history as Serenity and Celebor and Idhril were, and so he really hadn't paid any attention when their mother had spoken to them about it. Actually, he had been examining the threads that had been lingering around her hands, wondering if he should dare to try to play with them.
