GASP! i know how to pick my instruments choco!!! xP! :O yes love does hurt ninja I've read those blogs....

I myself hate those who go online for instruments or ask friends >_> its a rip off. Soo whenever I do get a new clarinet, I'll be getting it from RDG woodwind whee whee

anyways...

>_< I feel bad, I haven't practiced in like forever! two weeks to be exact, only like...7 not so efficient hours...I usually practice for 14 hours on average a week and its rather efficient too........ crying arghhh

razz i know how to look for my reeds, my teacher is picky when it comes to me and reeds anyways.

Lesson went well today. Sensei says that my sound has improved greatly with the new mouthpiece and ligature smile I'll be awesome in the wind ensemble/symphonic band tryouts! I'm already getting started on my solo for District S&E.

As for the ongoing debate on reeds...I don't have one fixed preference. I use Rico because they're the only ones ever in stock at the music store mad But I've tried out a lot of different reeds courtesy of WWBW at half price twisted . My favorites were the Vandoren Black Master and Vandoren White Master. They're designed for the German school of playing and they provide an interesting difference in sound. (It also has the benefit of making the BDs and techs walk from the orchestra room to the band room to complement me on my sound. ^_^)

*sigh* even buying from magazines and companies, you won't get the same quality as you would having a professional seek things out for you. Virtually everything I buy, I buy from my teacher at very discounted prices and with absolute gaurantee, using it during lessons before I buy them, and he gets better products than the magazines and stores. They get their instruments and supplies from the distributors, but that takes time, and people on the inside, such as my teacher and many other professionals, they get to pick from every mouthpiece, clarinet, barrel, reed, and so on before anyone else. They also get to try out them the same way you would in a store, except their options are far greater. Just remember that everything the stores carry are leftovers, the best things have already been taken. I'm sorry that many of you don't even have decent music stores around, let alone an excellent teacher you can get things from. I'm still convinced that your Stuart Clark isn't being too great of a teacher for not giving you supplies and such directly. The only thing RIchard send me to ABI for is for reeds or common sheet music (he even sells me books). Btw, the 56 reeds aren't worth the extra money, you can just thin width of the base of the reed of a standard Vandoren to produce the same effect. Another benefit from having an awesome teacher wink Don't get me wrong, Stuart's prolly a great clarinetist, but he's also young, and he still seems to act more like a performer than a teacher. Technique wise, our teachers would probably be a tie, but I know Richard does much more for me per lesson than Stuart ever could. Btw, does he come to your house or what?

actually, at the store I'm hoping to get my next clarinet from [whenever its time to get a new one] lets you pick first, all instruments new, you and a proffessional can try it out, if you don't believe me go to RDG woodwinds, its in L.A so its not a billion hours away...since we sadly live near eacher =_=

actually he acts more like both musician and teacher :Stare: but choco, honestly you can't determine my teacher from what I say, after all I'm an amatuer when it comes explaining technical stuff anyways, I can only do musicality easily. in addition to that, I am UTTERLY absent minded [I almost burnt my house down just a minute ago by merely making tea ^_^] if you want to determine what kind of teacher he is then just get one lesson it wouldn't hurt.

plus, one thing that makes him a good teacher is the fact he's not those strict asses you hold onto you for ten years and never give you off, meaning you never progress, i'm not to be conceited but, he said there is going to be a day where I'm going to be passed onto michelle zukovsky or uhh something gihauld, the fact he knows that makes him a good teacher

yes he does come to my house.

one thing I have to say, never ever offend my teacher in such a way like that, so what if he won't go off giving me books and stuff, MONEY DOESN'T BUY...uh music?!q uhh...::sits down and thinks:: but seriously stare he is a good teacher ~_~ like I said experiment and have one lesson just to see.

Anyway, I marched clarinet for two years before switching to brass....that was two years ago but I still remember much of what it was like hehe.....I think the hardest thing I had during the first part of every band camp was keeping my mouthpiece from knocking against my teeth...hehe...the good ole days....There was one thing that always bugged me when I marched clarinet though...IT WASN'T LOUD ENOUGH! lol.....of course...wood clarinets are like that 3nodding

I have two clarinets, my new wood one for concert band, and my old plastic one for marching. I'm certainly one of the loudest in my section, which is good, because I can usually be relied on to be in time . . . usually. The plastic probably has something to do with that; it's certainly louder and easier to play than the wood one, but of course, it doesn't sound as good.

same here. except im usually louder on my wooden one, even though i try to be loud when im supposed to be.

Tomarrow and the day after we're taking some kind of aptitude test at my school. I have some idea of what I want to be when I grow up, but...I almost have too many options. Surgeon, composer/songwriter, engineer, person-who-sews, chef, writer?, videogame producer.

Oh, have any of you heard of any female composers? All of them that we learn about in music class(the most pointless class that I have ever been forced to suffer through) are all guys (except Hildegard von Bingen, a nun in the mideval era).

I also just found out that the BD who student-taught at my school last year who has been going out with my cousin Erin since christmas proposed to her and she said yes and they're gonna get married this summer.

I'm gonna dress up as Link for Trick or Treat. (I'll keep going until I graduate high school.) I was gonna go in my band uniform, but my BD would kill me if I got anything on it, and I might be candy hunting in our rival school's area, and I don't want to start a fight.

I was sorta thinking like American composers, but at least I know there are some.

You seem to be obsessed with Japanese things. Were you planning to make the first two costumes, or buy them? I'm making mine. Well, not like buying fabric and stuff, but using some of the clothing me and my mom have, buying a plastic sword, and buying an x-large green T shirt and hemming it so it gets skinnier instead of shorter. If I can't find all the materials, I might be Mario or Luigi.

What are you going to Austria for? Some kind of music-related thing? Someday I want to go out of the country and experience other languages and cultures.

I knew I was forgetting to say something in my last post, but I remembered it now. My band and auxilary is going to the Penn State homecoming parade and the 9th grade class is the only class in the jr. high that went to it, so only we know how long and tortureous it is. my BD said he had to pull some strings to get us in there, and we're like the only outside band in it. it's us, the State College high school, the Blue Band, and the Alumini Blue Band. It's really cool cuz our rival junior high isn't going and neither is our high school.

Mr. Martin was talking about jazz band auditions today and he said the people who auditioned would have to play a piece of their choosing, play a couple of scales, and sight-read a piece. I was wondering what the point was of sight reading music, because they have time to practice the music for jazz band and such.

And the aptitude test today was weird. the first 130 questions we had to put how much we liked each thing. 2 delt with music, 5 were about art, 10 were about farming, and I spotted a few about working at a cash register and working at a gas station. They're probably gonna say that I should work at mcdonalds or be a plumber or something. then they had questions on verbal reasoning (analogies), numerical reasoning, patterns, and something speed and accuracy. I apologize if I have become incoherent.

My name's Daemus! I'm an alumnus of Twentynine Palms High School...class of 2003. I was the drum major my senior year and marched tenor sax my junior year, but the rest of high school was dedicated to my clarinet. Two year marching, four years concert, 2 years jazz (on clarinet...which rocked), plus all the honor bands.

I heart my clarinet! It's so fun! ...And it can be used as a torture device, lol. It's pretty surprising how far up the scale it can go. I can play about three octaves, plus a note or two. But that's it.

I'm also going to try out for All-State band. (I live in Rhode Island). I have to play two pieces of music, and memorize a few scales. It's going to be hard.

I've been playing for four years. I'm in eighth grade, and have been playing since fifth grade.

Who else likes using the high notes on their clarinet to torture people? mrgreen

I do! It's quite fun to have the rest of the section (who can't play as high as me) cover their ears and yell at me to stop playing.

God, I hate those so much. When I take them it feels like they are slowly sucking out my brain, making me good for nothing more than the menial labor that the career questions ask. ("Watching for forest fires?" ?! Do they want me to turn out like Ranger Gord?!)
