"Well... it is possible to ride bareback, Auntie Feng does that," Miyuki murmured, "I don't doubt he would let you ride him, but it's good to practice. I don't know how it would feel to ride Ponydash, but horses aren't so... smooth...."

That was one way of putting it, it can get bumpy if one wasn't use to moving their body along with the horse.

"Besides, it might be good training for him and for you to learn how to ride and how to jump."

And useful if they needed to get out fast was also in the back of her mind though she would like to ignore that thought.

"Maybe I should try it now," Andarien grinned at Ponydash.

"Perhaps it would be better to wait until we're away from the cliff," Aranxia cautioned the boy before he could go too far. "If you fall on the ground, that's one thing - but to fall over the edge of the cliff would surely mean your death."

Andarien pursed his lips. "Yeah ... I guess ..." He put one hand on Ponydash's shoulder and patted it gently. "Soon enough, then," he grinned.

In all honesty, Miyuki would have preferred they waited until there was an adult who knew how to ride with Andarien. Granted, Miyuki knew how to ride, but it was out of practice rather than any formal education. She knew, but probably couldn't tell a person why a horse had to be ridden a particular way or why you'd mount them on one side instead of the other.

She just knew one should.

"Let's keep going then..." she murmrued, because the sooner they were away from the cliff the more comfortable she would be.

It took a while but soon enough they left the cliff - and the city - behind, and before them was the other side of the island. For the most part it was meadow, lightly dusted with some late-season snow, but further east there were trees just before a range of mountains.

"I wonder how much we will be able to see," Aranxia commented, her eyes fixed on the sight ahead of them. "Surely not the half of it in a single day."

"I don't remember how large it looked when we had that roc ride," Miyuki admitted, "But then again you can't tell the terrain from above all that well."

How long it might take them to get from one point to another depended on how rough the terrain was.

"You're right though... even with a full day we won't even see half the island."

"Hey Mi, did you take one of Ada's maps?" Andarien asked brightly. "Maybe we can see if there's something we especially want to see and focus on that! Then we won't just be wandering!"

"There's an idea," Aranxia smiled. She looked to Miyuki. "Did your father give you his map?"

Miyuki didn't have to think about it, she never needed her ada's maps and whenever she did need it often she would ask to borrow it. She never kept one with her, and she completely forgot to ask him for a map when they left.

"Sorry, I didn't think of that,"
she admitted, "So I didn't get a map from him."

"Aw, that sucks," Andarien sighed, kicking at the ground as he walked.

"Why don't we just choose an area from here that we can see?" Aranxia suggested, trying to make Andarien feel better.

Miyuki nodded at that, after all there might be a next time and at least they were getting to explore the island a bit.

"Andarien, why don't you choose an area for us?"
she suggested.

Andarien looked around. He hadn't really done much traveling while old enough to really remember it, aside from desert travel, and to be honest all of it intrigued him. Still, it was cool out, right around freezing temperature, and he thought that maybe it would be a good idea to find somewhere that would be a bit warmer, maybe out of the wind or something.

"Mountains somewhere?" he suggested. He pointed at the nearest one. "There, maybe?"

"That would be a great starting point," his sister agreed.

They could see it clearly, they knew which direction it was at and they could use to mark their progress. So it was a good place to start exploring, even if there was a chance they couldn't climb the mountain once they got there. Of course at this distance it was hard to tell what the mountain was like.

"Lady Rhea mentioned something about caves in the mountains," Aranxia noted as a point of interest. "Do you think we might find one?"

"That would be neat!" Andarien beamed. "What kind of caves?"

"Dragon caves, once upon a time," their cousin replied, a dreamy expression on her face. "Queen Aerin is famous for having killed the last of them, though ... so they should be safe now."

It took Miyuki a moment to remember most dragons were dangerous, that her now aunt was a very, very rare case. Though it had made her curious about dragons and their intelligence. However, if the general belief was that it was unwise to meet a dragon than here it probably was.

"Is there anything special about once lived in dragon caves? Like any reason why a dragon might chose one cave over another?"

That or they made the caves, with dragons of this world one never knew.

Aranxia kept her eyes fixed on the mountains ahead of them and shrugged one shoulder.

"Availability?" she suggested. "I don't know. I never asked. I've never seen a dragon, or a dragon cave."

She turned to Miyuki and smiled. "I guess we'll find out, if we find one."

"I'm gonna try riding now," Andarien announced, putting one hand on Ponydash's shoulder to get him to stop. The Pokemon lowered itself to its knees and allowed Andarien to climb back up onto its back before straightening up again. It was a good thing Andarien wasn't any bigger than he was: if he were any taller, he would almost be too big for Ponydash's back, and as it was his feet dangled only a little above the grass that poked out of the snow.

Miyuki, having never seen or heard of a pony, never realized that the pony in Ponyta, was in reference to the height of the creature. In fact, PonyDash was probably more of a pony than a horse in some ways.

"I wonder how much taller Ponydash will grow when he evolves,"
Miyuki murmured eying Andarien's feet.

Normally she was used to the horses being so much bigger than her, since most were breed for elven use (and six foot was short for an elf). At least, she thought, since Andarien wasn't that far off the ground, it wouldn't be a large fall if something happened.
