Who are Dir en grey? If one was ever presented with this question, one could not quite come up with the right definition. They are a Japanese rock band comprised of five talented men, but that alone does not do them justice. Perhaps one should start from their birthing and continue onward. In this way, one may be able to paint the correct picture that is Dir en grey.

Dir en grey, in essence, was formed from the remaining shards of La:Sadies. Bassist Kisaki left due to irreconcilable differences, and guitarist Kaoru then proceeded to pull in new bassist Toshiya, which, in Toshiya’s words, was a “kidnapping.” This was the birth of Dir en grey, and their musical careers would soon blossom.

They were formed in 1997, and released their first album, “MISSA”, but it would not be until 1998 when they would really begin to soar, as the release of “I’ll” broke the sales record of indies singles.

In 1999, Dir en grey released “Gauze” under the production of YOSHIKI, and was well received and praised by many. By this point, Dir en grey was at the top of the world, and their initial visual image and dark music had become more polished and sinister than ever.

“Macabre” was their second major album release, once again darker than the aforementioned “Gauze,” and it was proof that Dir en grey was doing fine maturing on their own, for this album was not produced under YOSHIKI’s hand.

“kisou,” released in 2002, continued Dir en grey’s favorite dark, morbid flavor, and musically spiced it up a bit with a rougher feel. Their image which often brought to mind imagery of satanic dolls was beginning to morph into something rougher as well, and this would prove to be a bigger change than they had in mind.

“six Ugly” and then “Vulgar” were released respectively, both albums reaching into a numetal feel being represented by a numetal image. The original Dir en grey expression of all things dark was still very present, but the change in style would throw some of their fan base off balance.

It was the beginning of a struggle not so harsh, but nonetheless existent, even today. Some fans wanted the doll-like image back, wanted to be rid of the numetal musical style. Others, actually a vast majority upon analysis of the Oricon charts, still enjoyed Dir en grey and were forever by them.

Is Dir en grey’s story so far a bad one? Hardly. Dir en grey is hard to sum up in a few short, sweet words because they are butterflies in the world of Japanese rock. They are forever changing, forever stretching, crossing into new boundaries as they grow. They are explorers, and the only thing that remains the same is the dark messages and stories they tell the willing ears of their listeners. That is the beauty of Dir en grey.
