There was a brief glimpse of glossy black feathers and wickedly sharp talons as Emma removed her hand, standing over Ivan like a raptor.
There was rain in the spell as well, but not directed at Ivan.
Outside, thunder crashed and it began to pour.

"Despite what you think," Ivan was regaining control of himself and managing to get back to Zach's feet. "Your spells aren't just hurting me. While it may not be much, my host does feel some of the effects of your magic."
He had taken control while Zach rested from the sudden rush of emotion.
"We're linked," he said. "Me and the bird. So go on, tear my soul from his. See what happens to what's left."

The enchantress flung up a hand, about to scream with a mix of anger and frustration.
Lightning flew from her hand, blazingly bright and hot. The fork of energy stabbed into a wall of the tavern, leaving a rather nasty scorch mark.
Beyond the walls of the Waning Vestal, every tree for a mile in every direction was struck down in a similar manner.

"I figured as much," Ivan smirked and dusted himself off. "That's more like it, Bainbridge. Even though I've presented myself to you, an open opportunity to be rid of me, you still can't do it because of the host. That's what's so great about symbiosis. It's people like you who try so hard to be good that allow us to live. Thank you, Emma of Bainbridge."
He turned and headed for the door to the tavern. When he reached it he turned to give Emma one last remark.
"That last display really told me a lot about you," he said before leaving.

The enchantress vanished a few moments later, enveloped by the fires of her own magic.
She appeared a few moments later on the estate grounds, and she barely noticed that her range extended far enough that it was pouring there as well.
Oh, to be wicked again.
She screamed. It started low and quickly scaled the highest peaks of her range, sending birds into flight and windows close to shattering.
A quick gesture and the castle gates flew open. She closed them behind her and the energy seemed to flow from her slender form.
Emma needed somebody she could cry in front of and not get slapped, and maybe somebody willing to listen to an hour of venting.
She was in luck.

Seven sat in his usual booth scribbling on pieces of paper furiously and placing them into different stacks. He was tired of moping about the Tavern, upset with his condition and loss of his regular blood supply. The bottle blood would suffice, but it was far from enjoyable. Regal's happiness meant more to Seven, and he was sure before long he would find another that would be as willing and loyal as she'd been. Now she was exhibiting some symptoms of Dr. Question's blood. Apparently he'd given her a serum that gave her telekinetic powers. Seven had been tempted to have some, but he declined because it had not been given to him, it wouldn't be right to take what wasn't his. The theme would be Space, and the tavern would be an intergalactic cesspool. Seven had already listed the items he'd need to complete a design for the interior of the tavern, and on a separate list the items for the haunted house labyrinth and clown fun house. Next he just needed a list of contests and prizes. Of course, there would be a costume contest, but he was trying to discern what would be fun for everyone and realized the gap between alive fun and undead fun was very wide. With a shrug and a sip of his drink he slumped into the back of his booth comfortably. This was to be a celebration of the battledome's success, and the Halloween holiday. ★★★★★★★

The storm still raged on outside the tavern walls as Emma swept into the tavern, soaking wet and not caring in the slightest.
The droplets froze as they touched her skin.

Ivan was allowed full control of Zach's body as they entered the tavern under the condition that Zach would be able to take control at any time. The agreement was made.
"What in the nine hells is wrong with you, Bainbridge," Ivan demanded, shaking Zach's wings free of water. He had folded them over his head like an umbrella.

"If you mean the storm, it's out of my hands now."
She had only started it, nature had taken the downpour and ran with it.
The elf had not looked up from the thick tome she was skimming.

"You know what I mean, dammit," Ivan raged. "You're out of control and you know it. Yesterday with the lightning and now you can't even beat me in the arena. I repeat: What's wrong with you?"

She blinked, the very picture of innocence. "Why, I'm sure I haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about."
Neither anger nor sadness laced her tone.
There was more than one way to fight this little battle.

Ivan howled and threw his arms up in anger. He wanted very dearly to strike Emma again, maybe smack some answers out of her. He was sorely tempted to, now that he was sure he could fend off the pain she would undoubtedly send their way after practicing against the goddess.
"You know what I'm talking about," he moved in close to Emma and narrowed his eyes. "Why are you acting so erratically? You're supposed to be calm and collected, not angry and messy."

"I believe you could find that out for yourself. Look closely and you will."
He would find a net of silver-blue fire woven into her aura, visible only to the most careful of magically inclined onlookers. It was holding something at bay, a creeping blackness that threatened to overwhelm her slender frame.
She had taken a spell in battle that was intended to drive her mad. The sorcerer's net around her was holding the worst of it off as he worked on a cure, but some had seeped through.

While Ivan did not possess Wizard Sight like Emma did but he was able to see the darkness around Emma being tampered with. Normally people were submerged in the black. They were born in the dark, lived in it, and would eventually die in it. However, it looked like Emma had been cut off from the darkness around her by something.
"What happened to you," Ivan asked quietly, taking a slow step back so Emma could have her personal space back.

Her internal darkness was exactly where it had always been, but this foreign evil, the spell of madness was what was being held at bay. The net of sorcery around her was the only thing between Emma and insanity.
"Nothing of importance. I may or may not be the slightest bit mentally unstable at the moment."
That is, until the cure was complete.
