You can't write swordplay until you've experienced the real thing. The weight of the blade, taking into account the difference between using it with one hand and two, the various angles you can use it from, whether you use right or left handed orientation, your balance...
It goes on and on.

Sunsworn Does that even make sense? Makes perfect sense, really; though the reason I got into fist fighting on Gaia was because I wanted to take a break from the first seven years of sword-play. You could not be more right. I've been a collector of blades for well over a decade now, and I have often used them for comparisons on actions made in RP. That visual, and physical, aide really makes all the difference when you're taking the mechanics of an action into account.

I fenced epee long enough to get a good basis for the more flowery stuff that I hope to unveil as I progress.
An epee is no rapier, true, but it's similar enough that the basic principles still apply.

I'd disagree with Vintrict, but I honestly have been sparring casually for so many years with longsword and sabre and all sorts of carbon steel blunts I've owned that even if I'm no master I know what a sword feels like.
So, I can't objectively say.

Then you got Fierach carrying around a freaking Nodachi. Might as well fight with a popsicle stick.

Sunsworn I guess what I really lust for is the idea of two people who are really geared up about competing, but not so crazy about winning. Does that even make sense? And swords. I lust to do glorious battle with swords. Fists are for gits. I eat punches for lunches. I don't know anything about sword fighting. I know enough to respect a blade though and to fear it. I have rl experience with hand to hand though so it probably tailors my bias. For me, I feel that with armed combat one has to be a lot more careful due to the nature of it. Its harder for me to let go and have fun when blades are involved. though I have seen way too many great sword fights to think that hand to hand is inherently more entertaining.

A sword fight, even amongst masters, shouldn't take as long to reach its end as...say...a fist fight. Even Dithakar can punch someone several times in the face before I expect them to go night-night...
But one sword to the face is pretty much the end of the battle.

A gunfight/duel even shorter than that in general.

The beauty of a swordfight is the same as the enjoyment of, say, a soccer game.
Fistfighting is like basketball. You score over and over and over and it's a blitz to see who outpaces whom. A swordfight is a long, tense setup, with little points here and there, culminating in a final few moments.

A pretty apt description. With CQC, or H2H, you have to bear in mind that not every style is the same; unlike with a blade which has two, primary, means of inflicting its damage. The edge, and the point. I prefer Muay Thai, so my style tends to lean more towards dual-strikes...clinch style grabs...and Up-in-you-face aggression. Then you have Fiend, or Unspeakable, who favor Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; naturally they want to either rush in for a take-down shoot, or wait you out and get a grab. You can be pummeled into submission, choked unconscious, have bones broken...and all of that in extremely dynamic, and ever-changing, ways.

Ha, a gunfight can last just as long, especially if both people have cover. Then it's more of a "who can shoot the most bullets at wall" contest.
Unless you're my character, who will just trick shot you anyway behind cover.

I made such a statement in regards to say a gunfight in this very arena.
