"The creature," Lin explained, "The one that Aragost, Aranel and Sir Valdemar went after, was originally a rock troll. Rock trolls despite who their creator was did have the potential for good, and as a result the druids let the one they deemed the most good, or least evil depending on how you look at it, become one of them."

Which obviously wasn't a very good idea at all, though it did bring up a very old conversation about the nature of evil. Born or raised?

"Though that's not the one he met, he met the last one I'm guessing from what Earendil said... probably when he and his sister brought back the fortress and I don't know the details of that story."

"Yes, I believe he was an elf," Earendil nodded. "We'll have to ask Aranel about that when we return home ... yet another thing for our ever growing list," he grinned at Lin. "Still. When he first returned, I know he didn't like to talk about it, but in the years before we left, he would talk about it sometimes, even without being asked. So I'm sure it's all right."

"Well, I'm curious," Rhea laughed. "So I say we ask."

Lin would hope so because she was interested, though the fortress she knew still existed. She wondered if they could visit such a place, or if it would be too dangerous to.

"Well... it can't hurt to ask."

"I wonder if it would be safe to visit," Rhea mused as they approached the walls of the city. "I didn't speak much with Aranel, but he did tell me once about how he and his sister went to the fortress ... really it does sound quite fascinating."

"Maybe we could head there on our tour of the Four Lands," Earendil suggested with a grin. "I have to admit, I've been hoping to see it as well."

Lin had to admit she wasn't opposed to such an idea, she would really like to see the fortress. The books there were probably dust by now, but she was pretty sure it would be more or less intact.

"Well I have to admit it would be interesting to see," Lin replied, "And to see what is left, apparently when it reappeared it remained in the same state it disappeared. So after... what it's been two centuries now? Almost? It should still be more or less intact... I think."

Provided it was made out of stone.

Earendil thought about it. "It can't have been more than a century since they brought it back, I don't think Aranel's more than a hundred and ten years old, even. Can't have been a century yet."

"Which means the fortress would be in excellent condition," Rhea grinned. "I wonder what we'll be able to find in it."

Lin thought about it, she thought it was more than a century or at least a century and a half. At time they first talked about it, it had been almost a century since it was brought back... and it had to be several decades since that fateful conversation with Sir Valdemar.

Lin though didn't argue it, neither way it would be in good condition.

"It depends, I have no clue what they did there, I'm sure there were a lot of writings but how well do papers last without being looked after?"
PostPosted: Mon Feb 01, 2010 8:15 am

"Well," Rhea mused, "I would say that it depends on how well the paper was made in the first place, and how it was stored ... if it was left on the floor, or stacked neatly on a shelf ... whether it was protected inside a book, or what ..."

"There's a good chance that most of it will be at the very least, legible," Earendil assured Lin. "Paper usually lasts at least a few centuries, or so I'm told. And if it's in book form, especially books as important as those ones would have been, they would have taken care to make sure they would be preserved for as long as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some magic protecting them or something."

"Like the fortress itself was protected?" Rhea pointed out. "Didn't work out so well for it."

"Well the threat came from within," Lin amended, "And for all we know if there is any written material it could have been damaged by fire."

Seeing as the creature was literary on fire from what she could remember. She sort of wondered what was even left there now.

"But the main thing is, no one has been there to look after the place in so long, and I don't know how much damage the fortress took when it had been attacked."

"Though we won't know until we talk to Aranel, at the very least," Earendil pointed out. "Besides," he added with a grin as they passed through a triple gate, "I think we're here."

He looked around. The change from one side of the wall to the other was stark? outside the city walls, everything was quiet, and they could see for miles: it could even be imagined that they were alone, save the people they were walking with. On the inside, it was a completely different story. Houses, houses, and more houses, and people milling around, children playing, and further in even more different sounds could be heard.

"Pity we didn't fly over when we first came," Rhea grinned at Lin. "We would at least have an idea what to expect."

Lin had to admit it was surprising to find so much life in the city itself. Looking around her it sounded and looked just as alive as any other city she had been to.

"Yes but that wouldn't have been advisable," Lin murmured wryly.

There was a reason why the first thing they did was send someone to talk to the ruler.

"Though this is amazing..."

Really, it was as if the people lived there without the reality of the war around them, as if they were completely hidden away from it. But surely they had to know about it ... perhaps it was just such a part of their daily life that they could ignore the fact, or perhaps they felt safe with so many walls around them ...

It wasn't long before they had a trail of small children following them from a short distance, pointing and chattering amongst themselves. The adults bowed their head respectfully at Alena as they passed, though once they stood up they also looked curiously at the strangers.

"Would they even know about the people from our lands anymore?" Earendil mused softly, looking around at them almost pityingly.

That was a good question, Lin didn't know how much history would get passed on. At home, history classes were required but she wasn't sure about here where there was no school and tutors were for nobles and royalty it seemed.

"I don't know, I guess it depends on what sort of stories they tell their children."
PostPosted: Mon Feb 01, 2010 5:38 pm

"And how much has been lost over the years," Earendil murmured softly.

He was startled when suddenly a little boy ran up to him and tugged on his tunic.

"Sir," the little fire-haired boy asked, looking up at him with enormous green eyes, "Did you burn yourself or something? You are as black as a burnt log! Even your face is all dark!"

Earendil laughed aloud, and Rhea grabbed his arm and leaned forward to look at the boy more closely. "This is what we are, the Dark Elves," she grinned at him. "Once upon a time, our people lived together, yours and ours!"

Lin giggled at that, she wouldn't have imagined that as an explaination for dark skin. She glanced over at Earendil before looking back at the little boy. He was just adorable asking a question like that.

It made her wonder what the other children thought, she wondered as she noticed only then the small group of children that had been following them.
