Er, it's basically a more advanced turn. It's smoother, more graceful, and doesn't cut down on speed as much.
The "beginner" turns that you learn when you first start skiing are like
"pizza" turns, where your skis form a kind of wedge. It's ideal for people starting out (or people who don't feel like learning it because Illinois is so flat anyway), because you make turns much slower, so you feel like you have more control. It's also easier on the technical side, but it does require a lot more energy to execute on harder slopes.
[btw, no one calls them "snowplough" turns.
