You're shovel is practical as a tool, but I'm still not convinced that it makes an effective weapon to fall back on.
Lovely makes a good point too, and I'm so not getting banned from her team. But ranged weapons come with the problem of being loud (in the case of guns) and as we all know loud noises just attract more zombies.
Flame throwers are large and cumbersome, and though slow zombies come in great numbers. There's a good chance that by the time you've unleashed some serious napalm on their asses they'll have crowded enough over you to take a bite.
Lastly I'd like to suggest sporting some full body chainmail. I'm not very clear on the actual protective properties of chainmail, but I'm fairly certain that a humanish being won't be able to bite through it so easily.

you'd need some serious muscle or a beer belly to be able to move around in a full suit of chain.

Silly you, fire spreads! Set one on fire and the fire will spread to at least four more, if they all keep crowding closer they doom themselves. Yes they are heavy, that also mean it turns into a good bashing weapon.
Fire cleanses all, except bees, that only makes them stronger.

None of us know how to use swords, and flamethrowers don't exist to the general public. I bet half of you have ever shot a real gun before.
Shovels are useful, dependable and everywhere. They are the best.

I can make my flamethrower! Ok granted I just have a blow torch...
Truth be told I would probably get in my car and head out to the desert with a bunch of water and food to wait out the zombie invasion. Or head down to the docks and get on a boat and go to the ocean. Probably desert though, since then there won't be zombie sharks.

Man what is with you kids and your damned Zombie apocalypse!? While the lot of you are preparing for that, I'll be over here awaiting the rise of the robots.
Though the truth is, the apocalypse will REALLY be the Twilight fans.

I've fired a gun before at a shooting range, it's really fun. It's also not as easy as it looks, recoil is no joke on some of the bigger ones.
Still, they don't stop right away from the fire. Mike has a good point as well, flamethrowers aren't exactly in your local K-Mart. Use Molotov Cocktails, they do the job of burning the hords just fine and have the added bonus of range and availability. A Machete or two, couple handguns, a pack of molotovs, you'll be fine.
Robots don't scare me as much. All we need is a big microwave and big magnets and they'll be toast.

At least you can squish zombie scorpions. Good luck fighting off wave and wave of zombies in the city. I will be quite at home in the desert squishing zombie scorpions with a pair of thick jeans and some big stompin' boots!

You know, they will follow you to the desert eventually. It's not like they're gonna die of dehydration. Besides, your supplies won't last forever and the harsh desert will depleat you of your resources much quicker than you can find them. Your car will be more trouble than its worth in the desert and you'll have to abandone it. All by yourself in that baren land you'll get lost and die of dehydration if the scorpions don't get you in your sleep. A lone desert adventure is suicidal and just a bad idea in general. At least take a convoy with you with vehicles built to traverse the desert sands, though you're supplies will drain even faster from human greed and self preservational instincts. But that's just my opinion.
